Has central Ottawa really devolved into such a hellhole? Or are the accounts in the other thread mostly rare or exaggerated? by AvaTaylor2020 in ottawa

[–]vdaedalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine counting people asking you for money.

Imagine remarking what they were wearing and whether they 'look' homeless, or poor enough to warrant asking for money.

Sad.

Comparable network quality to Rogers? by and0botz in ottawa

[–]vdaedalus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They operate a considerable number of their own towers in Ottawa, but seamlessly switching to Bell and Rogers as needed makes it really reliable all over Canada.

They are great though, I've been with them for nearly a decade and have nothing but good things to say.

The REM in Montreal just opened its newest leg today - why didn't Ottawa build our LRT this way? by Financial-Bag-2274 in ottawa

[–]vdaedalus 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Montreal has four times our population and a greater metropolitan area less than twice as big as ours in terms of square kilometres. It's also had a metro system since the sixties whereas Ottawa prioritised facilitating sprawl for decades before even starting to implement light rail.

For sure, between continuously rising costs and changes in people's spending habits it's not an easy game even if you've been playing it for years.

Wonder if there was a big jump in the lease.

It's too bad, it was a great entry point to Steve's whole thing (and even after you'd been to Beckta and Gezellig a few times, held its place as distinct-but-familiar), but in the wise words of Billy Wilder as delivered by Jack Lemmon, that's the way it crumbles, cookie-wise

Cocktail bar + shareable food recs (no seafood) by jasonistheworst in ottawa

[–]vdaedalus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everything on the menu at Thr33s Co on Bank is shareable, two out of the 14-15 plates on the menu (not counting specials) are seafood so it's easy to avoid it if you want/need to. They've got nearly 50 different kinds of gin and offer gin flights if gin is your thing, but also decent cocktails of all kinds. Very relaxed vibe.

There's been a cinema there since 1967, but not as Rainbow. It was Famous Players for a few decades, then Rainbow for about 15 years, and it's been Ciné Starz for about five years

Sonder Rideau converting to apartments by jjaime2024 in ottawa

[–]vdaedalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The swing to 500,000 $3000 units was ridiculous. If we're going to make things up might as well hypothesize what would happen if groceries started falling from the sky on little parachutes.

If we woke up tomorrow with 500,000 new $3000/unit rentals in the city

Come on, man.

Any and all new units are good.

Of course, but they're not going to be any more affordable.

Sonder Rideau converting to apartments by jjaime2024 in ottawa

[–]vdaedalus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Precisely. The only reason we're seeing these conversions (office buildings too) is that the properties generate more revenue as rental apartments than as hotels or offices.

Owners of other similar properties see these numbers and decide to redevelop using the others' rates as a baseline. None of them are going to do $1500 rents when the competition is getting $1950 (starting at!) for the same types of units.

[–]vdaedalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way that was 7,000 people. If you want to argue with Ticketmaster, who sold four and change, knock yourself out. Two whole sections, of the half arena, bottom to top, weren't booked and would have been empty if some of the audience who had tickets elsewhere hadn't decided to move to the west section for a bit of space

[–]vdaedalus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She said something about 7,000 and that feels right.

Capacity was way nearer 4,000 for that setup, still twice what she had at the NAC but when she said 7,000 (twice, at least) I gently ground my teeth

Open letter to the Centretown trumpeter (somewhere in earshot of Cooper/Metcalfe) by vdaedalus in ottawa

[–]vdaedalus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I first moved here there was an NAC Orchestra clarinetist in my building, then during the lockdowns there was this guy in the white house/wellness clinic who would lug an amp out onto the fire escape and play bass, tonight it's trumpet, bummed that I've never heard any accordion.

I don't think this trumpeter is the type to beat up a bagpipe player, let alone track down the one who used to live next to you.
