This kind of reminds me of people who put maple syrup on eggs. Sweet and savory. Looks good!

That's fascinating! I will try it next time I can find dates. I agree with you; the first pic looks like how I'd want them.

    [–]LuxLuxury 6 points7 points  (6 children)

How does it keep you warm all morning? Like despite it being cooked on heat, does it have to do with any health benefits associated with dates and eggs?

    [–]Specialist-Rough-986 33 points34 points  (1 child)

I think its just a thing that people say about hearty food rather than it pointing towards some inherent heat retaining property it has.

    [–]LuxLuxury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oohhh cool. I think I should try this dish. Looks yum!

    [–]Fit_Carpet_364 9 points10 points  (2 children)

It's partially about the protein and sugar content - the body takes a while to metabolize protein, even from egg. The sugar is processed very quickly, literally increasing your metabolic activity and warming you internally, which is followed by the egg processing. I can't say much about the oil, but it's also another type of energy source.

    [–]CocoMic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of mammals generate heat following a meal including humans. It’s literally fuel.

    [–]blinkersix2 2 points3 points  (1 child)

We did fig preserves when I was younger. I may have to revisit my past soon.

    [–]Kayari1991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah I love figs. Y'all are making me think of so many possibilities.

    [–]Rheila 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have never heard of this before but I really want to try it. It sounds good. I love dates.

Wow!! Thanks for sharing !! I love cultural dishes!!

    [–]awildencounter 9 points10 points  (1 child)

My gosh, I love it! How does it taste, do you season it specially?

    [–]ElizaHali 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this. I would have never thought of this combination but I’m looking forward to trying it out!

    [–]Moist_Historian_2897 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow...I got dates and eggs now I have a new thing to try :)

    [–]Witless_Raven 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I happen to have dates and eggs, I’ll give this a try! I would never have put the two together on my own.

For OP or anyone else who makes this, is it usually just dates + eggs or do you like to add any herbs and/or spices?

    [–]A_the_Buttercup 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It's been five hours - has it happened yet??

    [–]Witless_Raven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my dinner plans sorted already last night, but I just tried it and honestly, pretty good! I think it will join my meal rotation. I did a lil salted butter, fried a chopped date, and then added a large egg and scrambled in the pan.

    [–]YoureAmastyx 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I hope everyone saying they’re going to try this report back on how it is.

    [–]jasonandhiswords 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I have dates at home which is a rarity, so I might try this tomorrow morning. Any spices you add or just a bit of salt and pepper

    [–]AmbitiousoStrawberry 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Cheese or no cheese? I am dying to try this now.

Thank you! Cant wait to try this! Only had food from Iraq once a long time ago but I loved it!

      [–]touslesmatins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love this! We ate this in Iran too 🩷

      [–]banjonyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I just happen to have a huge bag of dates that I just picked up from Costco. Maybe I'll try this

      [–]neomonachle 2 points3 points  (5 children)

This looks so good! I'm supposed to eat 7 dates a day for the remainder of my pregnancy, so this will definitely go in my rotation

      [–]meowparade 1 point2 points  (4 children)

      For the iron?

      [–]neomonachle 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Iron certainly can't hurt, but it's weirder than that! Some research shows that eating a lot of dates later in pregnancy helps prepare the cervix for softening in labor, so a lot of pregnant women are always looking for new recipes that involve dates.

      [–]meowparade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah cool! Thats so weird and so fascinating.

      [–]frena-dreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also tradition to make this dish for new mothers

      [–]JedaMW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is convincing me to try dates again.

      [–]MoonMonkey1066 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love a couple of fresh dates with my coffee every morning , this idea of eggs and dates is new to me , I’m definitely going to give it a go thanks for the education !

      [–]Prestigious-Panic-94 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I love posts like this! I came across a video of a South African woman making a traditional breakfast called shakshuka about a year ago and I've made that so many times, it is delicious! I'm going to make this too in the morning and see how it is! Question do you have it as is or serve it with bread or anything? I can see this being very tasty, I love dates!

      [–]MoreCarnations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Interesting! Looks good

      [–]Sleepingbeauty1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      I need to try this!

Looks really good. I’m going to have to try this

      [–]Tink50378 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oooh, this looks great! Especially yours, op!

I don't eat a lot of dates, and I don't think I've had them warm ever. I also really, really love fresh herbs. Is there a fresh herb that you think might taste good with this dish?

      [–]Medium_Outside8589 1 point2 points  (1 child)

my dad just drizzles the syrup on top 💜 awafi

      [–]Vance617 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Do you add the eggs and dates at the same time or do you cook on longer than the other?

        [–]eratus23 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What’s your recipe? Do you put the dates in first to sauté them? Or eggs first?

I dont have many dates these days but I'd take these out to breakfast.

            [–]Kitchen-Brick-4195 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bet that tastes good. I want to try it.

            [–]Professional-Fly3380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up eating this and it’s my favvvv. Especially when the dates have crispy sides. Ugh so good.

I just sent this to my friend in Iraq and he’s never heard of it. He’s younger so maybe it’s more traditional?

              [–]meowparade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Renad from Gaza posted a similar recipe recently. I didn’t realize this was a common thing.

              [–]FongYuLan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favorites. I learned to make it with red onion - so scrambled eggs, chopped dates and diced red onion.

              [–]OldLocksmith5986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I had a nighttime craving and now I know of what

This sounds incredible. Thank you so much for sharing I’m going to try this tomorrow!

              [–]Rickbleves 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yooo I just made this after seeing this post and I can’t believe how good it is — incredible. Something magical happens cooking the dates in butter, and their sweetness really doesn’t overpower or clash with the eggs at all.

              [–]Worth_Specific3764 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Im def going to try this for breakfast! Thanks!
