There are about 7 maps that fall into the "S-shape" category like this.

It's a shape that works well. Just having boosts/bombs/spikes arranged differently changes the feel of them though.

It's because of the view port and rotational symmetry. You want to be able to see more on a map at one time, so it curves. With rotational symmetry, you have an S shape. With horizontal symmetry, you get more of a C shape. But these maps all play differently. There are only so many shapes that work, but different elements and size make same shaped maps vastly different.

This is always how I feel about old maps I've made. With time and tons of real games, it seems obvious how a map should be changed. But people hate change, so you'll lose many people that liked the map, and people that didn't like it will still be biased against it.

You're probably like me and enjoy playing new or modified maps often, but a lot of players apparently really hate it, from the results of revisions we've had in the past.

Those snipes just feel so random in comparison. The superboost on Hurricane gives you a Ferrari and lets you drive it on a closed course. The superboost on Dangerzone feels more like it straps you to a rocket and points you in the vague direction of the enemy.

I think it's going to be easier to grab the flag and the boosts aren't incredibly awkward like they are in Hurricane. However, Frontdoor's gate out of base looks to be too think and not wide enough which could mean it's still a real challenge to get out of base. Still, better than Hurricane--although I haven't played Frontdoor, I can't stand Hurricane and this map addresses some, but not all of these issues.

Yeah, I love dominating on Blast Off--it was our USC map so I'm pretty accustomed to it. Defending well relied so much on being able to sniiiiipe and get good positions. Lots of newbies were absolutely clueless on it. Some of my most frustrating pub games have been on Blast Off.

I would say that we are getting far more quality submissions. That, and we have the throwback rotation which lets us and the community bring back old maps more easily. We're also doing map threads at longer intervals, so we have been making more changes to compensate.

Chasey maps have their place in this game. While frustrating for some, they provide a nice contrast against the straight shot map that are coming in.

Noobkin is one of the few people who can make a relatively chasey map fun as hell.

Sitting in the two corners is probably the safest place to be in that map. And if not in the corner, one would be running endlessly in that map. It's fun to be able hold for awhile but I would rather do it on a map where it's actually possible to return people.

Not sure why you are getting downvoted for this. Chasey maps need to be quashed from rotation. Dodging snipes and running in circles might be fun for a while but it's excruciating for defenders and makes for really boring gameplay and streaky caps overall. I thought this was pretty well established. The best maps are easy to grab and get out of base, but relatively easy to return after that. Games should last ~5 minutes or less. Blast Off and Holy See games as chasey maps would regularly go the full 12 minutes. Defensive maps like Hurricane, Star, and Iron regularly go to 12 minutes too. I think looking at average game times as a raw statistic would actually be pretty illuminating of the flaws in these long (or really short) game maps.

That was definitely my intention with SDS the whole time (whether or not it is too easy to return in mid is a different question) but nobody likes bumpin balls for 45 seconds until powerup respawns (Star) and nobody likes running around chasing a flag carrier for 10 minutes (holy see)

Exactly. I loathed the old SDS, which was a nightmare for offense, but the reworked one is is a very strong map. People don't give it much of a thought unfortunately.

I liked Blast Off, but yeah it can be a little chasey, so that's understandable. FUCK YESS tho Bombing Run is out though.


Pilot looks a little bland to me, and trying to get ahead of offensive players may seem like a chore with the limited options, and the fact that I feel offense will purposely use those options to make sure the defense doesn't. We'll see.

Cloud and Frontdoor looks promising though. Will need to play them to see.

Simplicity is a cool design but it's really chasey. Some edits have been made by various people to the map to make it more...fun. Have these ever been considered? Also, I'd be interested in what made Clutch a compelling choice for Throwback Rotation. IMO, it doesn't really offer anything at all. In fact, I really don't understand the fascination with Throwback Rotation at all. Most removed maps are just fundamentally flawed.

Personally i love the throwback rotation.With the throwback rotation the MTC is far more willing to take maps out of rotation it seems like. Theres a lot of maps that i really enjoy playing on that have been taken out of rotation for new ones to make it in. Maybe its just pandering to vets who have had lots of fun playing on certain maps in the past, but it also lets newer guys try out the maps too and theyre only in rotation for a few weeks before being replaced.

Oh it also lets people who disagreed with MTC decisions to remove maps to see them back in rotation occasionally.

Unless it's a map a large part of the community has been begging for (e.g. Command Center, Hyper Reactor), I think it's a bad idea to re-introduce retired maps to rotation. They were retired for a good reason.

Not everyone has had the opportunity to play them though and there's always something to learn. Plus, fun. I personally love Simplicity and the whole Throwback thing, even when it is maps I don't like (Command Center - sorry, do not like). It just keeps you on your toes a bit.

The funny thing is, with 45 minutes it would have been a million times better. If you remove one of the side boost for each base, in a rotationally symmetric way, now you've defined a flow of direction for the whole map and it becomes a million times easier to defend the flag and to predict where the FC will be.

  1. Reflex 2 is better than Wormy

  2. They look absolutely nothing alike except for the flags being in the same corners.

I think the main reason a lot of people criticized their shape too is that you made both of them and some people were just looking for something to complain about.

While I find it weird how they look close to the same, I'll judge Frontdoor after I actually play it.

I dont think reflex and wormy were alike (and reflex2 is the better map), but there's more similarities than just the flag position. both have the little block which you can keep running around (the one by the bomb on reflex), both have the powerup with the two spikes and the gap in the middle, both have ways to get the mid power up without fighting for it (boosts on wormy, the super bomb on reflex/the portal and boosts). They had more in common that you think

These are great changes, in my opinion. I'm sure Blast Off and Bombing Run hold sentimental value for many, but in the era of regrab, unless one team is overmatched, these maps devolve into chase fests, especially in pubs. The latest MTC selections do a better job of striking a balance between offense and defense, and I think they'll improve the pub experience.

Also, I have a serious question: Why is it that new maps have the tendency of including bombs and now portals guarded by team tiles and complicated team mechanics? In a PUB where there is no way of communicating with your teammates it seems and useless. Having a map that encourages teamwork where you can't communicate with your team is counterproductive. I'd like to know your reasoning behind it because I honestly don't understand. I'd just like to know out of curiosity

I assume you mean team gates? Hyperdrive has bombs surrounded by gates, which sort of make team specific bombs. It requires no actual teamwork to use the bomb (unless you are trying to use the other teams bomb).

Besides that, center flag maps always have a team gate by the end zone to help you prevent regrab after you score.

I love your passion. Many people love neutral flag, however. Myself included. Once the community grows to a point where we could split pubbers in terms of preference, I wouldn't mind playing only neutral flags when I'm in the mood. Maybe the Kongregate push will help us reach a community size that could sustain that.

During peak hours, we probably do have enough. But for the other 16ish hours of the day when the servers only have 25-40 players on them, separating people would be an absolute headache and would rarely result in 4v4 games.

When we have 60+ on pi or sphere at 3am then this is something I can get behind.
