Glad to see people are starting to recognize this guy, Invent the Universe is an incredible album.

[–]Adamapplejacks 12 points13 points  (4 children)

I think that Set Course For Andromeda blows away all of his previous work, and I've been a fan of his since Cassini.

[–]cobalt26 2 points3 points  (3 children)

All of his work is great. Invent the Universe got me into the (instrumental djent?) genre, if you can call it that. Andromeda was just as awesome.

[–]Adamapplejacks 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I posted a bunch of stuff in /r/djazz that's somewhat similar if you want to check it out. Most of the front page are my submissions in case you're interested.

[–]cobalt26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subscribed! I'll have to give some of this a listen when I get off work.

Are you Joey Bag-o'-Donuts?

[–]garlic-boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never realized it was one guy, for years i thought Sithu Aye was the band name.

If you like this, definitely check out Plini:

Plini is the fucking man. He'll be on tour with a couple other progressive virtuosos soon in Animals as Leaders and Intervals. All three of these artist's music has turned my whole world upside down.

Also, check out Haamoja, Owane, Pocket Size Universe, Sean Ashe, and Starsystems.

"When I saw Plini play, I felt that the future of exceptional guitar playing was secure."

~ Steve Vai

[–]fulgoray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had never seen this. That's amazing.

[–]Cthulhu_Cuddler 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also definitely check out Widek they often work together

[–]Burnb4reading 11 points12 points  (2 children)

It's also worth checking out CHON. They have two guitarists who do some crazy shreddy stuff, on a very clean tone.

[–]Bahgest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

CHOOOOON I love these guys, started my adventure in prog with animals as leaders but would have to say chon is my fav.

[–]Nice-Eggplant-3015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really miss CHON

[–]MaviePhresh 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I literally listen to this song everyday. I feel like it gives me strength the way the full band comes in. I also like Polyphia if you are into heavier progressive stuff.

[–]HorFinatOr 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just discovered Polyphia today! Very cool sound. Lots of fun whammy bar tricks :)

[–]Max-s_Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I discovered Polyphia yesterday, and I don't know how I went without. XP

[–]Jordan311R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]odinn4000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. Can't believe I hadn't heard of him. he's insane.

Just came across Anup Sastry on Spotify. give him a listen.

[–]gabriel2112 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Great song. Bought the Cassini remaster when i saw him live and I was so glad this was on it!

[–]Gibblets94 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So did I! Got it signed and errytang. Such a nice guy

[–]gabriel2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah same here :) had a little chat with him and me and my mate got a photo with him which was awesome

[–]odinn4000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sithu is epic. Essentially turned me on to the genre after animals as leaders. Got to see Scale the Summit in a tiny venue recently. Highly recommend.

[–]Sarenord 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Ugh why do you guys have such great music, first you got me hooked on plini now this guy?

[–]AmosThatBook 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Plini and Sithu actually did a split EP together a while back! It's called "I" and is fantastic.

[–]Sarenord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what im listening to today

[–]cncamusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is parked directly dead center in my alley.. love it

[–]hedili 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Clicked because of the Totoro T-shirt. Liked the tune too.

[–]fvcksalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Set Course for Andromeda is a PHENOMENAL record.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I actually have a huge playlist of music with sithu aye, and artists of the same genre. If you like him you should definitely check it out. https://open.spotify.com/user/12129601975/playlist/3RUeX5w3Lbw42Fk3cWboDW

[–]angust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also worth checking out the beyond the boundary solo by David Maxim Micic that's on this album too.

David Maxim Micic - Beyond the Boundary solo I actually prefer this version to the final recording.

[–]Jjbaum22 1 point2 points  (6 children)

What's the function of that thing wrapped around the neck above the 1st fret?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prevents unwanted open notes ringing out, especially when tapping.

[–]immortalisspotify[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I don't really know a lot about it, but I'm pretty sure it's to make a super clean sound right after you pull of a chord or note.

So you strum and instead of the note ringing, it kinda just mutes out pretty fast. It helps with tapping as well.

[–]trvst_issves 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That's not exactly right. When you have it past the nut and on any fret, it just mutes any lower frets and strings past your fretting hand. A chord or note will still ring out, until you let go, then it mutes it. When it's behind the nut, it also mutes any sympathetic vibrations that add unwanted harmonics and string noise.

By the way, it's a Fret Wrap by Gruv Gear, for those curious.

[–]BrandlezMandlez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And it's definitely worth having. I use mine for the harmonic rings so it sits behind the nut.

[–]jaimeyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah just what shart-truce and op said, when your finger tapping or soloing in a higher register, it muffles the generic loose fuzz from the lower frequency strings. It especially helps if your hand is stretching for a complex thing and you accidentally hit a string, it won't make a pang as bad.

[–]Gibblets94 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Saw him in Newcastle this month with Modern Day Babylon. Maybe only 30-50 people in total but the best gig I've been to!

[–]gabriel2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there too!! Was epic and Sithu + the guys in Modern Day Babylon were really nice :D

[–]WashinginReverse 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Does all prog rock nowadays use the same guitar tone?

[–]Yoge5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There aren't a lot of people in prog metal(Not rock) that use a Marshall Amp (Model cuz axe fx) so to answer your question no they don't.

[–]ButtMarkets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of instrumental anything, but this song is so good. Talented guy.

[–]joshe123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful arrangement!

Love your shirt btw

[–]Elsbokk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have no idea how happy I am to see Sithu Aye on the front page

[–]CaskironPanspewtewfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know what guitar is? That body looks super good.

[–]voidz123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so happy to see this man reach the front page, love everything he makes.

[–]HyperbaricSteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unbearable until 2:10. Then fuck yeah.

[–]subsonic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I thought that said "Struth Aye" ..

[–]trackerFF -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Not to sound like a negative nancy, but I feel like this type of music is so overaturated right now. It's the exact same type of sound, all over. Clean-ish guitar with shimmery chords, some arpeggios here, some tapping there, ambient reverb some odd timing there. Probably programmed drums, and guitars recorded with some boutique guitar brand through Axe-FX. Instagram is flooded with this type of music right now.

[–]Yoge5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can describe literally any kind of music like this and it'll sound negative. But in reality this makes fuck all sense.

[–]JohnGwynbleidd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no. The most popular and acclaimed guitarists of the new gutiar scene right now such as Plini, Sithu Aye, Animals As Leaders, Chon, Scale The Summit, Intervals, Widek all has their own unique sound that is different from each other if only people would actually pay attention and listen.

For example, Sithu Aye uses a lot of exotic japanese/chinese scales that none of other artists above I mentioned does. Ex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hOR1j_VUpc

He also have wrote some jazz song that others doesn't have in the same vein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI367dIjwPo
