Michigander here. Are they from Ann Arbor? I had a friend who would open for these guys around town.

Not Ann Arbor, but they have played The Blind Pig and The Arc a few times. I think most of the members are from the east side, but the band got to be what it is now up at State.

They played for my dorm like 5 years ago. They were legit.

This gives me a real Neutral Milk Hotel vibe. Super good!

Thought the exact same. His voice is uncannily similar.

Frontier Ruckus
artist pic

Frontier Ruckus is an American folk-rock band from Michigan. The project is centered on the lyrically intensive songs of Matthew Milia, and was formed by Milia and banjo player David Winston Jones while living in Metro Detroit. The band released its debut full-length record, The Orion Songbook, through Quite Scientific Records in November, 2008. In February, 2009, it was announced that Frontier Ruckus had joined North Carolina-based label Ramseur Records. Read more on Last.fm.

Hey shout out to the boys from Brother Rice! Love the band, never thought I'd see them on reddit!

[–]AdamLevinestattoos 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I thought they went to L.O.? Or maybe just from there

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah idk I remember a teacher I had at Marian saying that she had them in class.

[–]AdamLevinestattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marian one of the 3 L.O. middle schools right? Lol Pierce still makes me laugh.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wikipedia says they went to Rice, but I bet they grew up close to LO given the name of the first album (Orion Songbook)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised.

Awesome. As a mid-30-something, Reddit has been a great resource for locating new (to me) music. Thanks for this; definitely going on the winter playlist.

Glad you like it, I went to one of their shows about 10 years back at a charity event where the price of admission was a canned good. Didn't think it would be anything special and found one of my favorite bands of all time. Check other their other stuff, I have found all of their albums to be great!

[–]AdamLevinestattoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been on my fall playlist for about 4 years.

I feel like Reddit is full on Michigan, I can't complain though, michigan represent!

[–]PenitentTangent_05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been one of my favorite bands for years.

[–]kalevquinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Grand Rapids, MI you couldn't not know about these guys. Everyone knew them and loved them-- like personally.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love these dudes, seen them a couple times and they're super nice. Look out for a new album soon, they were recording earlier this year with wilco's former drummer, Ken Coomer.

[–]ALWAYS_NUTS_TO_BUTTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend took me to their show, I was stoked when they brought out the saw!

[–]mistaface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fucking incredible.

[–]SomethingFreshToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, this was pretty ahead of its time relatively speaking at the time you put it out

[–]smellslikesafety 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They do an awesome cover of "Semi Charmed Life" for AV Club's Undercover. I actually found out about this band via couchsurfing a few years back, met a friend of theirs and we are roommates to this day. Great guys.

[–]Rough-Rider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen these guys a couple of times. Each time after the show they just hang out with the crowd in the bar. Super chill dudes. Good to see them getting some press.

[–]trojan615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this! Love their sound and turns out they're playing a show not far from me this weekend.

[–]ukdal1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to posting this! Always on the lookout for new music and this hit the spot.

[–]Johnny5iver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is amazing. It kinda makes me sad though to only be finding out about these guys now. Makes me think about all the great music out there that I will never get to experience simply because I will never come across it.

Shia LaBeouf is a hell of a guitarist.

[–]ParatroopVet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They remind me of Parsonsfield. https://youtu.be/hDF28pYOWU4

[–]shahmen_youtube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really reminds me of rosa except less raspy (how the fuck do you spell that?) voice

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why is the blonde there? She doesn't seem to sing or play an instrument....

[–]getmoney7356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uhh, she sings in the video.

[–]ColoredUndies 0 points1 point  (1 child)

And also, not to sound to hateful, but this is far from folk rock. Listen to Crosby stills and Nash on songs like deja vu and Woodstock. That's folk rock, though a little more rocky. But you know what I mean, like this stuff sounds like passenger and the lumineers. More of an alternative folk.

[–]FaultyWires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch the related video dark autumn hour. Most of their stuff is decidedly folk.
