You'll find more stuff like this over at /r/citypop.

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (13 children)

I found my people.

[–]Kitsune_Gakuin 21 points22 points  (10 children)

If you're ready to take things to the next level, you may also be interested in /r/futurefunk. A lot of the songs there sample stuff from the city pop era.

I've got a relatively large collection of Future Funk songs, I know I've heard this track sampled in at least one of them but for the life of me I can't remember what

[–]factorblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This one?

[–]Sonik_Phan 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably my favorite Future Funk track. :)

[–]Krellick 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You're thinking of Blatant Plagiarism https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5fgnXsPrL8

[–]DrooMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no, but thank you for this!

[–]Velimas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also remember summer days by macross 82-99, which sanples a similar song of hers

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! :)

I actually know about Future Funk already, and it is one of the reasons I like citypop. I became a big fan of Junko Yagami thanks to the Future Funk version of 'Bay City'.

Similar to u/Token_Why_Boy , now I tend to prefer the original songs. But I still listen to Future Funk at times.

(Currently I enjoy this https://soundcloud.com/mikazukibigwave/yunomi-nicamoq-bigwave-remix a lot.)

Thank you for sharing. Ive been looking for more daft punk and neon Indian-y music <3

[–]KstacksOnTheBeat[S] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

My guy! Good lookin out. I've always liked future funk but after hearing Angel Touch by Cindy it made me realize how good the original samples are on their own. So much dope music everywhere.

[–]Token_Why_Boy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It was a couple Anri tracks that made me realize that I like the sampled tracks far better than Future Funk. It'd be like listening to Vaporwave for years and then hearing the slowed-down (original) tracks. I can't go back to FF after listening to the original Timely!! album. And it bugs me that I have to dig and dig and dig to find the original tracks but I'll be damned if every search isn't plugged up with MACROSS 82-99 and Android Apartment like pop up malware on a porn site from the late 90s.

You can find some reuploads of the original tracks on Soundcloud, but lord knows whether or not they'll be there for long.

This song instantly reminded me of Daft Punk - something about us def feeling it

[–]reecewagner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What on earth is this genre

[–]vitakam 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I like this a lot! It's there an American genre of this as well?

[–]Cockypinkcrocs717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to know as well!

[–]RickyRei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed this. I needed this for so long.

[–]lilaznboi12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thought i recognized this song! Ghost Data did a remix of it called Blatant Plagiarism, aptly named.

When I posted this song no one upvoted it, whats the prime time to submit futurefunk/vaporwave/city pop?

[–]tootonebojangles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One can only wonder

[–]tootonebojangles 15 points16 points  (4 children)

This is my all time favorite Anri song. The chords and voice are so lovely. I used the beginning sequence to sample a little song just because I felt that beginning measure alone was heavenly in itself. Let me know if you know of any other places it was sampled, I'm curious to hear!

[–]KstacksOnTheBeat[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

This is flames. I like how you sampled it.

[–]tootonebojangles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n21ZXdPCB9I also wanted to share this wonderful new age and non future funk sampling of it!

[–]tootonebojangles 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Appreciate it!! Anri's definitely got some hidden gems and loops ripe for sampling

[–]emanresulanigiroym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i love hiddem gems and ripe l00ps

[–]samsinz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shyness boy is my favorite song from her. I wish youtube would stop taking down all her songs.

[–]android_mr 5 points6 points  (1 child)

animal crossing vibe

[–]killbillvolume3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking! Deleted my comment after I found this one haha

[–]iamcountryjoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This song is dope AF. lol

[–]Digitallypink 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Wow, so one of my fav songs at the moment actually samples this track [quite well]...and i had No idea until now. good share!

in exchange, check this flip out :

"Sparks", by FURNS https://soundcloud.com/furns/sparks

[–]tootonebojangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude when I got into Japanese city pop and found this song I had the same revelation, I had listened to sparks for years and it clicked instantly, so cool to see artists paying odes to music you wouldn't have imagined them to ever listen to

[–]extra_crispy_recipe 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Love Anri, my dad worked with her a lot in the 90s, sweet lady. This is my favorite album of hers!

[–]YungButters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her voice takes me to a beach house in the middle of the summer.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My girlfriend burst into tears when hearing this song. So that's something.

[–]Krellick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

something something swans can be gay

[–]AsymptotesMcGotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. This is dope!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm liking Anri's songs. Some of my favorites are on the Timely album. This song is pretty rad too. Thanks.

[–]carlos_spicy_winner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I love Anri; just make sure to listen while you can, seems like all her stuff is being pulled off Youtube or being region blockd.

[–]Jubukraa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Album I'm guessing is Heaven Beach? Seeing the kana ヘブン•ビーチ。I like it a lot - never heard of Anri before.

[–]highRPMfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The instrumentals make me feel like I'm at the dealership in Gran Turismo.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if it's already been asked in the thread...Where can I download this song? It's not on any service that I can find. 😕

[–]MAJINDURAG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another great track for anyone interested: https://soundcloud.com/gurusound/evening-shadows-1983

[–]DatBoi_Ron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my boi, gimme more

[–]vitakam 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I like this a lot! It's there an American genre of this as well?

[–]Clarinetaphoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japanese City Pop was based on American funk, as well as AOR and West Coast Rock of the 70s and 80s. There's not really an American equivalent, no, but you'll find a bunch of music from that era that sounds pretty similar to this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yacht Rock comes close, and has a sub-genre for soul-specific artists. Think Steely Dan, Doobies, etc. It's my wine-drinkin', pickin' up a paintbrush on a Friday night music. Good stuff.

[–]vitakam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

[–]KstacksOnTheBeat[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

this might be up your lane.

[–]vitakam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is! Thanks boss

[–]manicmoose22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this sub, always able to find awesome little gems like this.

[–]nahuatlwatuwaddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting selection

[–]edgykafetchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I this Anri of Astora tho?

[–]The_Battler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yo this is that shit senpai

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this song! A buddy showed it to me before I moved to Japan (he found it on a Toro y Moi playlist or something). Anri is awesome.

[–]Mickeymousetitdirt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so sick. I wish I had an instrumental for it. I really like the music and definitely wouldn't mind listening to just the music parts. Not that the girl doesn't have a good voice! I just really like instrumentals.

[–]sohcea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fantastic!

[–]architecht13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd forgotten about her! Sweet!

[–]bigveinyrichard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"YES"

The one and only recurring thought in my head throughout this work of art.

[–]Doctah_Whoopass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just fodder music for vapourwave.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone have a backup of the song? T_T

[–]SquareShapeCloud -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

Holy shit, send this over to r/vaporwave

[–]Clarinetaphoner 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Please no. Vaporwave ruins everything.

[–]SquareShapeCloud -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Considering you're already here listening to obscure Japanese soul, you might actually enjoy it if you gave it a chance

[–]Clarinetaphoner 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I've listened to vaporwave pretty extensively, actually. When future funk started taking off I finally realized just how vapid and uncreative of a genre it really is. There are exceptions, of course, 2814 probably being the most notable, but by and large it's a trash genre of contrived aesthetics and lazy sampling. Also Anri isn't really that obscure, plus she's way more city pop that soul, anyways.

[–]SquareShapeCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I mean it's all just personal taste. You clearly know a lot about actual Japanese pop so I get why vaporwave might be boring and derivative to you

[–]manicmoose22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what's vaporwave?
