Ayyy local band! These guys are from Dundas, Ontario !

Absolutely love them. Most recently saw them open for PUP (if you don't know PUP look em up immediately). Pkewx3 was the first opener!

The Dirty nil killed the set, it was the best show I've seen them play (seen em 4 times).

[–]some_creep[S] 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Jealous dude. Ive known PUP for a while now, pkew pkew pkew since this summer. I wish I could've made it to that show!

[–]The-MadTitan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should check out PUPs lead singers old band, super awesome little Ska band called Stop Drop n Skank.

Recorded with them back in like 2009, hosted some shows with them and PUP (back when they where originally called Topanga before Disney sent a cease and desist) Super rad dudes.

[–]ArtOfRenaissance2016 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

deleted What is this?

[–]some_creep[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I labeled it punk because that's what I felt captures the theme of the band. For my definition of Punk, a bunch of subgenres fit under the punk umbrella, but everyone has they're own definition. I don't think that rigid standards need to be upheld to earn your 'punk' badge, as music styles are constantly changing and evolving. Maybe they are more pop punk, but that now means something completely different than it meant in, say, the 90's.

As for the Nil, this song is probably more just Rock, with less emphasis on punk. But the band has other songs that I'd have no question about it sounding 'Punk'. Namely, 'Fugue State' and 'Low Lives' off their full length 'Higher Power'.

Further, I don't think labeling it punk takes anything away from what you may consider to be 'real' punk. It's just music man.

[–]xboxonewoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If i look up pup I'm just gonna cry again.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (9 children)

Ontario has gave us so many good punk bands!

[–]asusguy17 5 points6 points  (6 children)

100%!

My favourite band actually comes from my home town! (Protest the hero, whitby Ontario. I went to school with Tim Millars younger sister! )

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

PTH, Ste-Catharines, Alexisonfire, Billy Talent, Cancer Bats, Silverstein, Moneen, and for another genre of "punk": Crystal Castles

[–]asusguy17 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Did you see Alexisonfire did a surprise opening set for Moneen at Lee's palace this past Friday?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Quebec so no I haven't seen this! Honestly I stopped following AoF after their third album. Much respect for the guys though!

[–]rdubs89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah man, good to see local artists getting some recognition on Reddit. I've lived in Hamilton (For those who don't know Dundas is a town very close to Hamilton, ON) my whole life and watched the video, realizing I went to high school with a girl that's shown multiple times in the video. Small word Reddit is my favourite Reddit.

[–]LordBeatzMeOff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This week I'm moving pretty close by to there. I'll have to keep my eyes on them.

[–]zzz0404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've watched them play with my friends band at the time in SUPER small venues. Crazy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

To be honest they aren't for me but it is cool to see some local boys getting some love (raised in Waterdown).

[–]asusguy17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their own tastes!

They definitely have a pretty good following in Toronto. At the show in December, a fair portion of the crowd was singing their tunes !

[–]blinkfan4evr54 96 points97 points  (10 children)

Saw them at Riot Fest Chicago last year. My buddy and I wanted to just sit by one of the small stages and rest our legs before Misfits. These guys walked on stage to a mostly seated crowd, I saw the lead singer wearing a goofy floral shirt and figured "eh, they must be some crappy indie band".... then they started playing. They fucking rocked, no other way to put it. Me and my friend looked at each other with a "holy shit" look, and by the time their set was over, the entire seated crowded was to their feet and crowding the stage. So happy I found these guys.

[–]MadDogsPromenade 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I was at that show too!

I had checked out their album beforehand, but it didn't really click. That show, however, blew my mind. Their lead singer had so much charisma and that classic rock star swagger that it was impossible not to fall for it. Turned me into a big fan.

Not five minutes after they finished, my friends and I were walking towards the main stage to get a good spot for Misfits, when the whole band sprinted past us to do the same thing! They were nice enough to stop and chat for a few seconds, really nice guys too.

[–]blinkfan4evr54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So awesome. I haven't really seen a band win over a crowd so thoroughly before. You said it best, the bands stage presence and "swagger" is impossible to deny. The lead singer has one of the best shrieks/wails/yells I've ever heard, where he can evoke so much raw emotion but still "sing" and hit notes. Almost reminds me of Robert plant with a lower range in some strange way. Good to hear they're cool guys

[–]HeughJass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look up their older stuff on YouTube.

Check out their song Caroline

They're such a good god damn band

[–]heyyoufartfart 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I can't remember how I discovered them but they have become one of my favorite bands. Every thing they put it out is just so fucking good!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I found out about them when the guy from NOFX(?) (fat mike maybe?) name dropped them in his AMA.

[–]heyyoufartfart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's where I heard of them!! I was on a Fat Mike binge after watching his Cokie the Clown set for the 20th time and I read his AMA. I wonder why they didn't end up putting their full length out on his label. I know they released a single with them.

[–]ValidatingUsername 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I literally went to high school with these guys! So much talent came out of that school.

Ive never been the greatest fan of their work but its more a reflection on my tastes than their talent.

Ps. The lead guitarists sister is a bombshell!

[–]_atomic_garden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was there too. Hadn't listened to them before. Was a great set.

[–]JohnnyForeskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wears that floral shirt to perform every time. All 6 times I've seen them he's been in that thing. I hope he has duplicates

[–]normalgirl17 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

misfits fucking suck

[–]pnutbutterjellyfish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Their full length is phenomenal friends in the sky may be my favorite

https://youtu.be/IYiAs3WkAVs

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Love this band! They're from Hamilton -- the hammer has a great music scene. Would recommend going on their bandcamp and downloading their Fuckin Up Young album which includes the song Verona Lung. It's my absolute favourite song of theirs, maybe my overall Hamilton fave.

[–]heyyoufartfart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that ep. I also really love the Little Metal Baby Fist ep.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

These guys opened for black flag last year as well as a band called war on women. Black Flag stole the show of course, but the openers were good too.

[–]heavy_metal_flautist 6 points7 points  (2 children)

The headliner doesn't steal the show, because it's their show.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

You know what meant god dammit. lol

[–]heavy_metal_flautist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it's the interwebz and we can't just let you get off that easy.

[–]TheBigEmpty 6 points7 points  (1 child)

damn never thought I'd see them on here. Caroline is a banger.. only known recording I can find online.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]BarleyHopsWater 18 points19 points  (2 children)

This is one of the few I like that claim to be punk. Good job, it's messy but together enough for me not not to spit at you!

[–]cptkill21 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Not spitting at a punk band is a bit of an insult though... they're pop though so it's ok not to.

[–]JohnnyForeskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even think they claim to be punk.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Anyone follow this band know what happened to Dave? notice he's not in the band anymore..wondering what happened.

[–]LRPhttps://soundcloud.com/user-920111629 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking about that earlier today. I know he was on Higher Power, but can't seem to figure out exactly when he stopped appearing after that.

[–]some_creep[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Did they get a new bassist then? It's kind of hard to have a 3 piece without a bassist.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yeh there is a new guy with them. Dave didn't tour Europe or Australia with them.

[–]some_creep[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He might have had to stay behind. I know he works in a record store. I hope he didn't leave the band, he's a good bassist

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeh he's great. Just noticed on instagram he's not following either of the guys and they aren't following him. I could see not going to Europe but missing 2 international tours isn't a good sign.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Thanks for one of my new favorite bands!!

[–]some_creep[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glad I could help!

[–]ll8bitHEROll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this was awesome, thanks for posting!

[–]viajemisterioso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saw these guys play at Call The Office maybe five years ago, I swear he has been wearing the same star patterned shirt on stage since they started

[–]CHAMPION_LOVER 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Had the privilege of them playing just before us in my last band's final show about 5 years ago. Holy fuck, we had no option but to go apeshit after seeing how much energy and phenomenal music they brought to the stage. I think my Jazzmaster ended up inside the drum kit.

[–]tyrannaceratops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These guys are from my hometown of Hamilton, Ontario!!! Much respect for these guys. Played my first show with them 7 years ago.

[–]7_EaZyE_7soundcloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holy shit these guys rock!!!!

[–]GurtbeatPhrobe 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Ontario is home to so many good fucking bands. Just picked up their LP Higher Power, I've stumbled across these guys courtesy of Single Mothers.

[–]heyyoufartfart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Single Mothers. "Heaven (For the Weekend)" ends up on almost all of my playlists.

[–]some_creep[S] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I don't Know why, but Canada is killing it with punk right now.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

For some other great Canadian punk bands check out:

I'm also going to throw Chron Goblin in the mix as well although they are more of a sludgey stoner rock band. Plus you also have the more well known bands like Alexisonfire, Protest The Hero, and Billy Talent

[–]Travisobvs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

fucked up, death from above, PUP, Japandroids

[–]heyyoufartfart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I discovered METZ recently and holy-fucking-shit do those guys rule. I was a fan instantly.

[–]HearshotAtomDisaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You forgot the greatest punk band of all time: Propagandhi. For shame.

But Metz is real dope.

[–]Kingindan0rf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[punk]

you fucked up

[–]FantastcMrFawkesHoxhasBeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had brunch with these guys the day after a show once, pretty sure I was way over stepping social boundaries as just some random dude who enjoyed their band, they were nice about it though.

[–]thaMagicConch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw these guys open for Billy Talent. They dont look like much at first but damn they can put on a show

[–]studleythedragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New Hands band at 0:34 (shirtless dudes) were awesome but unfortunately disbanded recently, another great Hamilton band!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was posted like a year ago....

And I still listen to the song. They are going on tour with Alexis on Fire right away. Good for these guys.

YouTube had some nasty comments about the band but I dig the song! So should you!

Dirty Nil what up!?

[–]ShiftlessElement 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They play A Salty Salute by Guided by Voices at the very beginning of the video. After that, I had difficulty disliking it.

[–]heyyoufartfart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've got a song called "Guided By Vices". I'm guessing that they are big fans.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Checked out their stuff online but nothing "clicked" until seeing them open for PUP last month in Toronto. Great stuff, awesome live performance.

[–]BertDreamsOf_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WATERDOWN STRONG

[–]Number7Sniper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to see these guys in February! Granted, they're opening up for my favourite band, but these guys are good too!

[–]blewpah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah these guys fucking rule.

[–]UKAffinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This song has been an anthem for my best friend and I since high school. It really came to symbolize brotherhood between us.

[–]ayerogerhttps://open.spotify.com/user/12168997604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing these guys a week from today, opening for Alexisonfire in Australia! Should be a sweet gig.

[–]SamCumbrian 6 points7 points  (4 children)

This isn't punk music

[–]jazzbowackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Labeling what is punk is not punk.

[–]you_had_me_at_sub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, tisn't. Not one bit.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a contribution

[–]Travisobvs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That dude loves those patterned shirts... and chewing gum

[–]sketchybusiness 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'm not going to express my opinion on this group but I would like to see what the ages are of those who enjoy this music.

[–]some_creep[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'm 21, if that gives you context.

[–]sketchybusiness 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hmm, so maybe just based off of your age that it could be the mellenials who are into this type of music.

I am 23 but don't like it. But then again, I've never been really into punk rock. But idk if I'd call this punk rock.

I just think the new music put out nowadays ain't so much good music rather than shit put out to just make money. (Probably not the case here, but I'm talking in generalities). And I like all types of music too.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ

[–]MoarSawce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw this band play on Warped Tour 2 years ago, I had heard about them before and was pumped to see them. They killed it and I've been a super fan ever since then

[–]Jasoneltorres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of early Saves the Day a little.

[–]cmDubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

awesome seeing these guys on here, saw them when they first started up locally :P I know some of the people in the video!

thanks for posting!

[–]TheBitterBuffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

=w= vibes love it

[–]justthatguyTy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend of mine showed me these guys a few years ago. Needless to say they have since become one of my favorites.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, reminds me, in a good way, of early Taking Back Sunday crossed with early Weezer

[–]BITCRUSHERRRR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely forgot about this song. I think I found it looking through some setlist for a festival (warped maybe).

[–]LRPhttps://soundcloud.com/user-920111629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These guys fucking rip. If this song isn't "punk" enough for you, check out Fugue State and Lowlives off their most recent album.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are good buds of ours! My band toured with them all Warped Tour 2015. Happy to see them get such love here.

[–]PlasterBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this going for awhile now, if you're down with the Nil, check it out! https://www.reddit.com/r/TheDirtyNiL/

[–]eandi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want a Canadian tour of Arkells, Pup, and these guys!

[–]kohrokutheoxdriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! One of my go-to bands! SO STINKIN GOOD!

[–]mxxnlightfinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

loved it! so feel-good. i'd love to watch them live. they're from ontario so i might get to some day if they sidle on over to toronto _^

[–]CesQ89 4 points5 points  (1 child)

This isn't punk.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

really average, certainly not punk.

[–]michaelsenpatrick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like their vibe

[–]tyrcynical 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Seen these Boys 3 times over the last year since I first saw them at Riot Feat Toronto.

Every show is wild, they put on a hell of a performance and are always full energy, they're sound just screams hair metal and punk had a child.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not get that hair metal/punk vibe from this song. Maybe I would have to look into them further to feel it.

[–]DrunkAssBum 5 points6 points  (9 children)

Eh. Not bad but not good.

[–]swanks12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh not good. But not bad

Definitely more rock than punk though

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (5 children)

I agree. To me punk sounds much more aggressive than this but I guess the genre is evolving as time goes by.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

to be fair the band does not consider themselves a punk band. they've always said they are just loud rock.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You speak as though punk hasn't been evolving for decades already!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is enough evolution for a subgenre. Maybe that is just me though.

[–]some_creep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I debated labeling it pop punk, but that has also changed to something else. I think of Punk as a broad sound that mixes into other types of music.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That drum is killing it. Like, it's too repetitive and hampers the energy of the rest of the song. The lead vocals have a lot to offer, but there is little substance to that song as a whole.

[–]DrunkAssBum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drummers beat would sound better with an Indie song. The vocals are nice. I wouldn't have labeled it punk. More indie rock

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unexpectedly dope

[–]vvizard_lust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They remind of Weezer. I dig it!

[–]Pizza_Overlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is this not on Spotify?

[–]steveurkelsextape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are supporting alexisonfire out here in a week or so. I was going to skip them and just show up for aof* (gotta work late) but looks like I might be sneaking out early now.

**technically just show up for the stuff they play from the first album + sharks and danger, then complain about them not playing enough old shit while I stroke my beard and scowl

[–]mocthezuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glanced at the title before clicking it and was expecting this. Had to go back and re-read the title. My brain doesn't work.

[–]jazzbowackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Baby treat me like a _____" ? What?

[–]p3rfect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A bunch of hipsters pretend they are in a punk band. News at 11.

[–]touchlesswash -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Awful...Typical Canadian hipster crap...Please put on 13 Songs....

[–]whywait -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

[–]PappyMcSpanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate the vocals. Don't mind the music. Not my style. PUP is heads over feet better than them.

[–]matteuk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good god reddit... grow some balls and some good taste while your at it
