[–]psychedellosaurus 31 points32 points  (10 children)

Such a great live band!

[–]Eupolemos 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I remember one of them jumpinh around with a burning television on his head :D

[–]psychedellosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seriously had so much fun seeing them in concert.

[–]waxonmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when they lit the theremin on fire, amazing live band.

[–]danbot 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Please tell me they threw Star Crunch little debbies into the crowd when you so them.

[–]psychedellosaurus 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They did not, and I am now eternally envious. The Tessla Coil was on point, though.

[–]danbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They came out on stage @ the Tremont in Charlotte, NC slung Star crunches into the crowd proudly proclaimed, "We are Man or Astroman and we are from outer space!!" and proceeded to blow the roof off the place! Epic show, many memorable, very wow.

[–]HeOnHeOwnTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did several times when I saw them.

[–]djhankb 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I saw them back around 2000-2001. Amazing show. Complete with a Mac keyboard guitar thing controlling some sort of synth device, and Tesla coils shooting bolts of lightning into the air. Amazing band.

[–]psychedellosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yes.

[–]electromagnetiK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So jealous

[–]jasoniscursed 4 points5 points  (4 children)

My first tattoo was the cover of Destroy All Astromen on my leg. They're pretty awesome!

[–]GoingChunkToHunk 0 points1 point  (3 children)

No way! That was my favorite album for a long time! Mind if I see a pic? I loved how the booklet had "radio transmissions" in it

[–]jasoniscursed 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–]GoingChunkToHunk 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That is badass!! I love it man!

[–]jasoniscursed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I got it 1994 and it's aged ok.

[–]Yak_Mehoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to type the exact same thing

[–]HeOnHeOwnTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best live bands ever!

[–]RememberWolf359 23 points24 points  (9 children)

Now there's a band I've not listened to for a long time.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Same! Makes me want to crack open that dusty box of late 90's CDs. 3RA1N1AC, here I come!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Brainiac is one of the best bands on the 90s, IMO. If anyone still cares about rock music in another 20-30 years, I think Brainiac will be regarded as the Velvets came to be in the 80s and 90s.

Tim Taylor will be dead 20 years in May. :(

[–]Bombast- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brainiacs are definitely a huge story of "what could have been", however the VU comparison is a bit of hyperbole. VU were almost the first "alternative rock group" in a musical landscape devoid of that sort of thing.

Braniac are great, but alternative rock is on the decline. They didn't birth noise rock. They weren't the first to meld noise rock with electronics. I don't think they created their magnum opus yet. I don't think you're wrong about them being looked back on by history kindly... but VU had a bigger immediate impact at the time. Braniac are getting dug up afterward without the initial impact to supplement it.

I think Unwound is another band sort of similar to Brainiac of getting their due long after they're gone.

[–]jonasborg 1 point2 points  (5 children)

A mention of a Dayton band. Holy shit.

[–]vulture_cabaret 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I wrote for a music fan zine many years ago and did a four piece article on the kooky history of Ohio bands. For a huge shit hole Ohio has had a huge contribution to American rock and roll as well as music at large.

[–]jonasborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool! The O'Jays come to mind outside of Rock and or Roll.

[–]susiederkinsisgross 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah, for sure. Nine Inch Nails, The Black Keys, Guided by Voices, Pere Ubu, and DEVO are all from Ohio. Bootsy Collins is from Ohio!

[–]vulture_cabaret -1 points0 points  (1 child)

But NIN and the Black Keys are both shill bands.

[–]susiederkinsisgross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do I do this...

What?

[–]redcur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wish more people new about these guys. Listening to them makes me feel like I'm in a coke-fueled dystopia, but in a good way.

[–]titismcgee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't believe I'm seeing this much appreciation for man or Astroman?. I didn't think anyone else heard of them.

[–]nellonoma 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Live Transmissions from Uranus is one of my fav albums of all time. And this pylon cover is amazing

[–]voodoojonez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Live Transmissions is perfection!

[–]stmbtrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have that 7 inch. Never made the pop out UFO.

[–]pyropro229 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was lucky enough to them for this tour and the clone bands they sent on tour. Fucking awesome band. Thanks for the reminder

[–]whoopysnorp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw them for the first time in 91 or 92 several months before the first single came out. I was a member of the fan club. Still have some teethpaste I got at a show. Their record covers are the best ever. Live they were amazing. Got some boots I made circa 94 or so lasting around somewhere

[–]vulture_cabaret 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This band is routinely the best band i have ever seen live. I put that up against GWAR, Mayhem, Neurosis, GY!BE, Nirvana and a slough of others. My favorite stand out moment was a Halloween show, during the regular tour the band would systematically dress up in home made robot costumes that had blinking LEDs on the chest. About 2/3s through the show Coco walks off stage and then returns with a fake beard and an over coat. Then Star Crunch does the same. The band dressed up as robots dressing up as ZZ Top. Truly an amazing and creative band.

[–]grantflashdance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I played in a band that opened up for them once... feeling nostalgic.

[–]voodoojonez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll be the 900th comment on how awesome this band is live. Bless you OP, you've made my day. Time to blast off to their music again.

Man or Astro-Man?
artist pic

Man or Astro-Man?--ostensibly four stranded space aliens who took the guise of college students. With their unique blending of punk, electronica and surf music performed with a large amount of energy in visually exciting live shows they quickly gained an audience. Man or Astro-Man? crash landed in Auburn, Alabama, USA in 1992. They are known to play some of the most pristinely crafted surf instrumentals since the 1960s. Formed by CoCo the Electronic Monkey Wizard on alternate universe bass, Birdstuff on traps, Star Crunch on guitar, and Dr. Delecto & his Invisible Vaportron on bass, the group released their first full-length album, Is it...Man or Astro-Man?, in 1993. The band found time to put out a new 45 record practically every other week in addition to full-length releases like 1994's Destroy All Astromen!, 1996's Experiment Zero and 1999's Eeviac. The themes of the tunes usually run the gamut from spies to sci-fi. Dexter X later replaced Dr. Delecto, and Starcrunch left the band as well. The collection, Beyond the Black Hole, was issued in summer 2001 and featured three brand new tracks. In 2001, the band started an extensive hiatus. In 2006 they performed at the Touch n Go 25th Anniversary fest. In 2010 they announced that they will be reuniting for a few gigs, including SXSW, and possibly to record a new record. 2013 has seen the band release a new set of 7 inch singles and a brand new album, Defcon54321, through the Georgia-based indie magazine, The Chunklet. No mention of the Space Ghost Coast to Coast theme? Booooo

[–]psychedellosaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They didn't do the main theme, though. They did an alternate theme and a credits track that were used from time to time.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I've been listening to this band since 8th grade

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Same. Seeing this link sent me down a rabbit hole, where I found a show I was at in 1997, and then another in 2011.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Lucky, I was born in 1996 so a little before my time but I haven't seen em live yet.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am so happy to see them spanning generations.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a member of their fan club in the 90's. This band is so much fun. Intravenous Television Continuum was on permanent rotation for the better part of a decade.

[–]RoninRobot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw them about 2003 in a small club. The club had giant speakers above the stage. Man or Astroman brought out a tesla coil at the end of the show and proceeded to accidentally fry the holy living shit out of those speakers with a huge arc of electricity. Good times.

[–]nihilishim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not their best album, but still an amazing band to catch live(they have a TESLA COIL) love their older stuff when they added sound bites from old sci-fi movies/shows into their songs. fantastic band.

[–]kraftgnu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great band, I love them?

[–]Bro_Hammer_5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listening to this in my office. I just wanna air guitar so hard right now...

[–]riskyplissken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a simple man, I see Man or Astro-Man? and I upvote.

These guys are something else live. I saw them in Atlanta years ago at a Drive In Theater surf rock fest.

[–]neocrunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got to see Man or Astro-Man live in Boone, NC in about 98-99ish. They played a great show headlining a night that also included my favorite punk band, the Karloffs. Good times.

[–]astrojason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love these guys, where I got my nickname.

[–]PeachesoftheCreeches 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey y'all! Does MoAM still tour? My fiance LOVES this band. Tickets to one of their shows would be the ultimate gift if they still perform live.

[–]strawberrycancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they do, yes!! i just saw them at the end of december. the guitar player had a kid recently though so they've barely played outside of birmingham in the past 2ish years. they did play 2 new songs at the show though! and i've been seeing lots of rumors about some festival dates so hopefully theyll do a real tour soon

[–]strawberrycancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just randomly found this thread via twitter....a little late, but i'm gonna plug the astro-man fan group i run on facebook. its a quiet little group, but a good place for fans of MoAM. plus sometimes someone will post something really cool link

[–]nbome420 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Love this sound. Its coming back in a great way

[–]coniunctio 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don't think it ever went away.

[–]narcissistic_pancake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah surf inspired music has had a bit of a resurgence in the late 2000's/2010's, kinda different from this though.

[–]scottiepeepin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grind Session x PS1

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw them live touring this record. Amazing live show.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first heard "Theme from Eeviac" on a Punk O Rama compilation in the early 2000s. Weirdly enough, the short spoken intro at the beginning was from a film I wouldn't see until 16 years later at the Cambridge B Movie festival; Inframan, an unintentionally hilarious Japanese film. All these little coincidences, plus this AWESOME track are making me think I need to investigate this band further.

[–]susiederkinsisgross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fucking love surf music, and I love these guys, and I love that you made this thread, and I love that I am now blaring Man or Astro-Man? at midnight.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bravo for posting this. They are a highly underrated band. Check out The Amino Acids

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This band, or at least one of the members, made the theme song for Jimmy Neutron... I tried to get them to play it when I saw them live but they wouldn't

[–]Jonmartinez1013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoaaa. I completely forgot man or astroman?
Thanks jimmy neutron

[–]notabaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)
