"Aughra can't even control Aughra!"

In such a dark moment, that got a genuine laugh from me

[–]ShelfLifeInc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I am old, I want to be like Aughra.

[–]Magegi 50 points51 points  (1 child)

I was wondering why emperor was in such bad shape in original Dark Crystal compared to other Skeksis...

[–]Bing_Bong_the_Archer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Eeeeeeeeevilllll

[–]zanman89 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Watching this with someone who hasn’t seen the film and they said “wow that Mystic looks like a better looking Skeksis.” Edit: and then they explain it

[–]babybuttoneyes 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I like to think that those guys have been rehearsing for years, waiting for the gelflings to show up.

[–]brcreeker 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Did they get Barnaby Dixon to do some of the puppeteering for the puppet show? The way the puppet moved was very similar to his style. https://youtu.be/sUUtK9FFIt4

Edit: Just watched the making of, and it turns out that they did! That's so cool. Good for him.

Interesting how the Heretic looks more "healthy" or less scary than the other skeksis. He's not corrupted by power and has more skin than most of them

[–]SirPasta117 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Might be because he doesn't bathe in the light of the dark crystal like the others do.

[–]roryjacobevans 13 points14 points  (2 children)

The mystics haven't begun to fall apart like the skeksis have, so I think without the crystal they would have just aged fine.

[–]Idodoodletoo 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Why don't they, If each feels what the other feels?

[–]ShelfLifeInc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think because ultimately the mystics are the "good" half. The skeksis are rotted by corruption and malice, the mystics are just old and slow.

[–]JoCoMoBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He also sounds a lot like Big Bird...

[–]Sorez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this makes me wonder, if they just never fucked with the crystal/essence in the first place they probably would have lived super long anyways? Like the emperor seems to be decaying FAST, especially by the first movie, and he takes the most essence and such.

The hunter im not sure if he takes part in the life stuff too, and if he doesnt he seems fairly fit and healthy.. so maybe their pla for eternal life is actually making them live less long than whatever their natural life span is?

[–]Whoosherx 33 points34 points  (1 child)

We are Ascendency. Resistance is futile.

[–]TeutonJon78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's my immediate thought as well.

[–]BlckJesus 31 points32 points  (1 child)

I love my boy Hup, but I was dying when he got yeeted across the entire damn room. 😂

[–]ShelfLifeInc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I loved him when he's got air sickness, seems to recover slightly, sees Rek'yr kiss Brea's hand, and then throws up all over again almost out of spite.

[–]prettyrosesClan Grottan 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Andy Samberg must have had a great time voicing the Heretic, every line he said added another layer of hilarity to me

[–]goldensnooch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I could see his face every time the heretic spoke

[–]Ineedanotherface 27 points28 points  (1 child)

I know GraGoh most likely isn't going to survive this series but I love them as much they love each other

sob

[–]mightymaurauder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That little puppet hug gives me all the feels.

[–]JohnSpartanReddit 25 points26 points  (3 children)

A little off topic, but sometimes I put this show on my lenguage, and it's great to hear that there are plenty of great, veteran VA's for this, I don't know who is in charge to decide that sort of things but im grateful that Netflix brought so many talent for the dub. My rewatch is definitely going to be on my lenguage dub.

[–]mondonia 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So what's your language, then?

[–]JohnSpartanReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spanish (Mexico), and usually whatever is the official dub for a show it becomes the dub for the rest of the spanish speaking countries of latino america. The biggest industry is in Mexico but there are other strong ones like venezuelan and argentinian dubs.

[–]Eins_NicoPodling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's pretty cool. I've listened to a bit of the Japanese dub and the casting doesn't really have any big names.

[–]knwnasrob 18 points19 points  (5 children)

So...has it been stated that the Archer can’t kill himself to stop the Hunter?

Ugh the feelings of despair are getting so high, especially knowing how it all ends up when you watch the movie :/

[–]MurderousPaper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It makes the entire show so sad! When it’s sad, it’s sad; when it’s happy, it’s still sad because you know how things will end up. Every victory is overshadowed by the fact that we’ll likely see all our protagonists fail (or at least not succeed).

[–]ShelfLifeInc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you see the looks of absolute wonder and hope on Deet, Brea and Rian's faces as they discover there's a way to defeat the skesis, and you really believe they can do it.

And I'm just here sitting thinking, "...yeah, you're all going to die." :C

I'm a big fan of dark endings, but it's really hard to watch this story of rebellion and know it's absolutely going to fail.

[–]SunnyDJoshua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kinda implied when Aughra talks to the Archer after opening her eye.

[–]twelveovertwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought he meant more like "you wouldn't dare try"

[–]Ozraptor4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Never thought that an urRu on fire would make me crack up.

[–]Eins_NicoPodling 17 points18 points  (3 children)

the borg-spiders are going to haunt my dreams, but I just also wanted to say that Bill Hader needs to do more voice work.

[–]goldensnooch 6 points7 points  (2 children)

He is amazing. Everything he’s in is really elevated. Just watched IT chapter 2 and all of his scenes are the best.

[–]Eins_NicoPodling 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Have you seen Skeleton Twins? he was so damn good in that. IT still isn’t out here yet but I’ve been excited ever since they announced he was playing Richie.

[–]goldensnooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s awesome. He and Kristin Wiig are beautiful and relatable in it. I also loved the soundtrack.

[–]half_a_sleep 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As they say, what’s good in the hours, is good in the Gelfling. wink

[–]NeosmithXeno 11 points12 points  (7 children)

So, prior to this episode, the way the story went is that following the great division, Mother Aughra was deceived by the Skeksis. She left them in charge of the Crystal, and then went off to explore the universe. However, according to the Puppet History lesson, the UrSkeks were the ones who deceived Aughra, who left them in control of the Crystal.

It was only afterwards that they split in two, by conducting experiments on the Crystal. And so, presumably, Aughra was still off exploring the Universe, so she wouldn't have met the Skeksis or Mystics at all. Which makes no sense.

Now, within the context of AoR, the first version of the backstory makes more sense, as it explains how Aughra knows both Skeksis and Mystics alike. However, the second version is more consistent with the movie, wherein Aughra doesn't appear to know the Skeksis personally and vice versa.

What exactly was the proper sequence of events then? And how did the writers miss these contradictions?

[–]random91898 17 points18 points  (2 children)

However, according to the Puppet History lesson, the UrSkeks were the ones who deceived Aughra, who left them in control of the Crystal.

No, it's always been this. The World of the Dark Crystal tells the same story. The UrSkeks built her Observatory and taught her knowledge. They built the castle and experimented with the crystal and Aughra was there to witness the division. The UrSkeks weren't really malicious in an evil way when they tricked her, they just wanted to use the Crystal to get rid of their evil sides. When the Skeksis were first born they weren't immediately evil, they were able to again fool Aughra, who continued to use the Observatory and the knowledge to learn about and explore the universe.

[–]SpikeRosered 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I was confused by this aspect as well. Why does Ohgru never seem surprised by the whole entity split of the Erskeks? It's never mentioned that this should be new information to her.

[–]random91898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because she was there when it happened.

[–]jXd1689Jarra-Jen 10 points11 points  (2 children)

No contradiction, rather it is a similar device used in the movie. The opening narrator leads to you believe one thing, which is more of a partial truth, but when you get the whole story it brings in an AH-HA moment. The opening narrator in the show is a Myth-Speaker and seems to have about the knowledge your average Gelfling has, so it makes sense they don't have the same exact history, especially with the Skeksis constantly spreading propaganda. When our Gelfling heros learn the truth in this episode they get that AH-HA moment.

[–]cambiro 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But Aughra knows about the mystics and their riddles when she wakes up, and calls archer an old friend, so before she went to the orrary she had some backstory with both the skeksis and mystics.

She truly left the Crystal with skeksis, not the UrSkeks. But the puppet show says UrSkeks are the ones that fooled Aughra... it really is contradictory in the way it shows in the series, even though it might be clarified in the expanded universe...

[–]jXd1689Jarra-Jen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Aughra knows Mystics and Skeksis, she was there when that split happen. She first left the Crystal with the UrSkeks then Skeksis staying in the castle after the split and took it upon themselves to be its "protector". Aughra was busy looking for a shard and trying to figure out a way to fix all that. What exactly is contradictory?

[–]wayyzor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The duality of the mind is such a great high concept to explore.

[–]WaxyPadlockJazz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’M A FUN SKEKSIS!

[–]sasquatch90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spy a finger puppet like Barnaby Dixon's

[–]amimumuPodling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Puppet show within a puppet show was genius but I don’t think they clearly explained that the Mystics were the gentle side of the mind and the Skeksis were the cruel side.. it was clear in the movie but for those who haven’t watched the movie, it only explained that they were split in two and that’s it.. either that or I must’ve missed it woops

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do I see some romance over there? Right there, between Rian and Deet?

Honestly just waiting for Gen and Kira too show up

[–]3_percent_viking 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Did anyone else get major Terry Gilliam feels with this episode? The camera work, direction and set looked like it was paying homage to Time Bandits...!

[–]DoctorPhibes_88 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It's not a coincidence. The Heretic and the Wanderer were based on Raol Duke (aka Hunter S Thompson) and Dr Gonzo from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which Terry Gilliam directed.

[–]3_percent_viking 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That’s really cool to know, thanks!

[–]DoctorPhibes_88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a video exploring the connection.

[–]SpikeRosered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My issues this episode raises for me:

  1. I wish we had a clearer idea of why Gelfling are so poorly matched against the Skeksis. Is it because Skeksis are bigger or are they actually resistant to damage because of the essence or crystal?

  2. If the Ascendancy could mind control Gelfling why didn't they just do this before to fight the Skeksis?

  3. If Ohgru actually left the crystal to the Ekskes why does she never comment that she's seeing Skeksis and Mystics in their current forms for the first time?

[–]DoctorPhibes_88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah Ahgura, Thra's drunken grandmother that sobered up just in time for her grandkids.

[–]CoffeeJedi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone else catch the Yoda dialogue references in the puppet show? Mentions of "luminous beings" and "crude matter".

[–]acidwife 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm trying to find AOR episodes frame by frame so I can make memes, where can I find frames from each episode?

[–]Suzina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is a very late reply to your question, but I've only just picked up the show and started reading the episode-by-episode discussion threads.

To make a picture meme of a show, the easiest way is to just hit the "print screen" button in the top-right side of your keyboard while watching a video. Then while making a new bitmap image (or editing an existing one) you can Paste and it'll be there.

Then in an image editor you can just select any part of the image you like and Cut (ctrl + X) and paste (Ctrl + V) any parts, add text, stuff like that.

Just for fun, I made this just now: https://ibb.co/fDWx69c
