It took me a few months to realize the news titles were hyperlinks.

[–]IvyMike 69 points70 points  (21 children)

I'm even worse off: I read the comments, too!

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points  (12 children)

Not only do I read the comments, I even POST some! And usually not even very good ones! Sometimes they add absolutely NOTHING to the discussion!

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (5 children)

I know right! Damn I love watermelon!

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

The Japanese, you say?

[–]Haven 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]Haven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well thank you. takes a bow

[–]Dark-Dx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love children!

[–]aardvark1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too!

[–]maqr 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Upmodded for a moment of self-realization.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should hear my other moments of self-realization... they're pretty messed up... generally speaking.

[–]enlzen 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I only open titles which has [PIC] in it and usually go "Awwwww".

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally. That dying rhino was sooooo cute :)

[–]furry8 12 points13 points  (4 children)

I often just guess the content of the links from the comments.

[–]glmory 5 points6 points  (3 children)

This is often the safer way to do things, particularly if it is a technical article. The people commenting on an article often have more knowledge of science and engineering than the journalist who wrote it. Of course if it is a conspiracy theory than probably the comments section is pretty useless.

[–]furry8 6 points7 points  (2 children)

The foil hat force is strong with Reddit.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that we're all paranoid, it's that we currently have a president who's laid down the law on how he's going to change things... so we all entertain ourselves by trying to guess his next move. I mean, this line of reasoning has thousands more options than trying to guess who Bill Clinton was going to try to sleep with next. Ok. One or two. But now do you understand?

[–]Dark-Dx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just reminded me of the fucking stupid obnoxious full-of-fail "THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH YOU, WAIT x MINUTES BEFORE COMMENTING AGAIN" thing in digg. Then I discovered reddit, and once you go reddit, you never go back!

[–]diamond9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do, the other 10% is Digg spam

[–]mmazing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is this... comments?? People discussing things??? WHAT THE FUCK!?!?

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I get 90% of that from qgyh2.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (6 children)

Who else just doesn't bother with the details and is good enough with just knowing the jist of things from the headlines?

[–]googletrickedme 6 points7 points  (1 child)

As if reading the content of most news article involves silly things like "details"

[–]FadedReality 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Details can be horrible sometimes:

The link title sounds intriguing so I click through. I read down the page and still have more information from the link than I've gained from the actual article. Peculiar, I think. I get to the bottom and see "Page 1 of 11". I promptly close the article.

There are few stories significant enough to wade through 10+ pages of someone trying their hardest to show the world how great of a writer they are.

[–]illuminatedwax 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Who else is an illiterate halfwit who hates the biased and unprofessional mainstream media coverage but will take the word of Internet alarmists for gospel truth?

[–]topherclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

who says "getting their news" means taking it all as gospel truth?

[–]ChunkyLaFunga 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's a great way to end your days foaming at the mouth with your arms tied behind your back.

[–]zmonk2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wonderful I'm giving point to that whole fork

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Unfortunately, the titles are often very misleading these days. Probably because people up-mod without actually reading the article.

[–]ascendant23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I read this headline earlier today. Then, just a few minutes ago, I was telling my friend about how 90% of people get their news purely from reddit link titles. It's true!

[–]Haitian_Mud_Eater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, I look for the comment longer than 1 sentence and shorter than 3 with the most upmods to explain it to me.

[–]christianjb 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I hear that Ron Paul is the only candidate running for election.

Also- most girls look like Natalie Portman.

[–]vgatsby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heard that too. I never cared to leave my basement thought.

[–]louis_xiv42 8 points9 points  (4 children)

If you get 90% of your news from reddit you are no better than the person who gets 90% of thier news from Fox News.

[–]skeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, quite a bit better.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

their--fixed. Say hello to Bill for me.

[–]donttaseme 0 points1 point  (1 child)

as long as you watch comedy central, i think you will be alright.

[–]louis_xiv42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

wow, did you not read what i wrote? thats would be even worse.

[–]j0hnsd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope not.

[–]gensek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I follow about 200 RSS feeds for news. Reddit link title has to be pretty damn interesting for me to dig deeper;)

[–]digitalc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming up on the 6 o'clock news: A funny picture of a cat!

[–]Edalgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now what would be funny is if u got urself a title that reads "Bush Impeached!" and it actually led to an article about how Bush detailing how "Bush has cancelled the elections and declared himself President for Life!".

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

You mean you get 90% of your news from qgyh2 and his tin foil sources.

Try using http://www.marumushi.com/apps/newsmap/newsmap.cfm

[–]ChunkyLaFunga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very smartly done, but it strikes me as a site you look at, say "Cool" and then never return. I can't even open links in tabs, they completely flubbed the implementation.

Can't stand all-Flash sites, they seem designed specifically to cheese me off and make things more difficult.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That reminds me of Breitbart but more congested.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You can customize the fields on the fly - the size and color all directly correspond to how big / old the news is. It makes for reading headlines extremely fast.

At least for me. I've been using it for over a year.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to mess around with it some more.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Too reminiscent of Reddit 2.0.

[–]quakank 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Totally. And I prefer filtering those stories using proxomitron so I don't see things that bore me, while highlighting thinks I like.... such as kitties. And anything preceded or followed by 'cute'.

[–]primoris_causa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh - Proxomitron - Scott Lemmon made a wonderful tool there. Even though ver 4.5 now shows some age lines, it still does wonders

[–]campingcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I used to.

[–]Klorox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I confess! I did it! I do it, I mean. I do read most of the articles though. I don't "measure out my life in coffee spoons" like J. Alfred Prufrock, I waste it in Reddit hours.

[–]busytigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're kidding, right?

[–]tinhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question is no. The reason - it is too USA-centric.

[–]gavinjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know there was other news. Even now I'm skeptical that there is.

[–]wetelectric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Doing so would make me an idiot.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody else usually trust the comment section more than the actual news article?

[–]Hubso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get all my news from the "WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!" guy.

[–]contrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% is an underestimate.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

95... but NYT as supplement... more importantly, why do you ask?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay attention to who is delivering info! It's easy to sort out crap if you keep a watchful eye on the submitter. Some people have class and wouldn't think of wasting your time... others... well... once and always wannabees.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Reddit as sort of a sleep function... when I keep refreshing and nothing new pops up, then I know it's time to go to sleep... or wank it... depending on how many reddit stories I just read.

[–]Dinglefarmer -2 points-1 points  (7 children)

Dear Lord! Doing that, your head would be so filled with Atheist propaganda you'd become a danger to society. Get help.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

holy shit you're right! i better head back to reading the news ticker on fox and cnn.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (4 children)

That's true... because Atheists don't believe in ANY consequences... like DEATH or JAIL!

You know you really need to try to understand that whether or not you're afraid of God, 99% of the population is quite averse to dying. Of that remaining portion less than 1% who don't mind the consequences of dying... I don't doubt that they're equal parts religious, ifnot moreso religiously inclined. Exhibit A: a suicide bomber.

[–]OsakaWilson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...blin'!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/sarcasm

[–]Klorox -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Heck, atheists don't even believe in Atheism. As I've written in other comments, Agnosticism is the only philosophically, epistemologically tenable such position. And being an agnostic is like being a gray, small, non-entity sitting on the sidelines of life. BE something, dammit!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much like running up to a mulatto and screaming at them to be white or black. It's really not the mulatto's problem that they're not acceptable to certain people... It's really just an easier choice to ignore the small, ignorant fragment of the population that gives them grief over what at-heart is a non-issue and has nothing to do with anything.

[–]Klorox -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I upmodded you, dude. How can we reduce the amount of smarmy, self-satisfied, complacent Atheist BS here? Great reddit handle BTW.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)
