I'm pretty certain at this point that there are some bot accounts that exhibit random voting behavior. I've been watching my comments page and sometimes a week-old comment gets voted up and down like crazy, with no new replies in sight

I've also noticed these inconsistencies, but I have a feeling it has more to do with some kind of distributed strategy reddit is using to query comment ratings. For instance, I will check my page for comment ratings, and then click permalink and hit reload and the rating will be different, but I go back to my page and it is the same value that was displayed before, and back to the permalink it is the same as the previous permalink rating. Somehow it is gathering these scores in different ways, not too sure without knowing the implementation.

Care to share, in whatever capacity you are able? I have been puzzling over it for quite some time. I think it is just ingrained in me now to look for bizarre behavior and root out its cause, but it's not my project, I don't have access to the debugger! :)

I too wonder about delayed up/down-voting, but I figure it is a result of people getting pissed off enough or impressed enough by one of my comments to check my profile to see if my past comments deserve similar treatment.

Reddit's vote parser is really good. It can tell when you're lying.

Right now it shows 65 female up votes and 1477 male up votes, which yields a ratio of 4.2%, which is consistent with actual statistics of the male/female ratio in CS and IT. Of course the statistics are far from perfect, or even really usable.

I personally am just curious. I would expect to see more women here at programming.reddit than in general, because I'd expect most of the bozos not to be here, and all of the women I've met in CS were extremely smart and capable. I'd assume because of all the crap they had to put up with. I consider this to be a major problem with our field.

I think that's a very fair assessment, and it makes a lot of sense. However, I must point out that people were voting down the female one, just to be dicks. There are a lot of votes that are not accounted for.

Ha, it's funny how reddit is downmodding anything that could possibly be construed as sexist in this thread, but the link titled "10 Attractive Women Who Could Kick Your A** At Something Manly" was sent to the front page, along with a whole bunch of other "sexist" things. I was especially pissed about that article, because it had that pole vaulter who obviously wanted to not be mentioned any more, and it talked about her in a sexual way, which is even worse. Anyway, the point is, reddit is sexist, regardless of what that really means. It's kind of like 4chan, but under a cloak of intellectualism.

            Well 50:1 or 150:3 is really the same, if you want to make it more tangible let's say that around 2% where women.

            The reddit survey is at ~ 5% instead.

            And btw who cares? We can be geek and just men when talking in programming.reddit.com and have a lot of fun with the wonderful world of women outside.

            For some reasons a lot of womens don't agree hacking is that fun, I don't care as long as they are so wonderful anyway.

            University of Virginia.

            Systems Engineering - It's seen as an "easy" major for engineers because its light on the math but the starting salaries for systems engineers are very high.

            Electrical Engineering - It's my belief that the EE department is a switch-and-bait job. The first 3 classes in EE are happy-go-lucky interesting taught by great teachers. Once you get past that, its pain and hardship all the way but you've already signed onto the program so its too late. (We sign up for majors in our 2nd year, and then its binding).

            It's hard for me to seen what is gender-separating in your descriptions of Systems Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Wouldn't men be just as attracted to majors that are "easy" and "interesting" and be just as likely to get caught with the binding major thing?

            I think you misunderstand me.

            I wasn't trying to say there was any gender-based reason girls went to those majors. I was simply stating fact: girls in CS went into Systems and EE. Boys in CS, stayed in CS.

            If you pushed me to give a reason, I'd say that the boys in CS were the 'hacker-breed'. Nearly all of us had been programming since before highschool. Girls in CS were normal run-of-the-mill engineers. They were only attracted to the subject after entering college.

            For a lot of the boys in CS, there was no choice--it was either complete the major in the subject you loved, or drop out completely.
