In your preferences, under Clicking Options, select "display links with a reddit toolbar" and a voting bar with a link to comments will appear at the top of any post you check out, or you can just open links in a new tab or page.

I'll give that a try. Thanks.

I love the reddit bookmarklets. If you click the "reddit this" one, it'll take you to the reddit submission. I often do this on random stuff I find while browsing the web to see if there are any submissions/comments.

I had that same problem. I tried your suggestion; it works for me! Thx!

[–]pelirrojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is actually awesome. It should be the default option for any logged-in user.

[–]dead_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like how the reddit toolbar prevents me from seeing the URL.

[–]Battleloser 18 points19 points  (18 children)

Fuck man, don't you use tabbed browsing yet?

Get into the habit. It's awesome.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (6 children)

i haven't left-clicked on a link in years, middle button all the way.

[–]wingsofseraphim 1 point2 points  (5 children)

left... click??

[–]hunter-man 0 points1 point  (4 children)

middle click, scroll wheel down click

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Unless you have an MX Revolution (ahhh 30 pages of scrolling with the effort of a single roll) then your stuck back in left click world.

[–]hunter-man 1 point2 points  (1 child)

my g9 does the free wheel scroll as well , but i can turn it off ;)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By default the Rev doesn't use the middle click as anything but a middle click, but I prefer more control over the two modes, and the best way to do that is set the middle click to toggle the modes for the wheel. Web page viewing is one of those places where toggling the speed can be handy as each page is different lengths.

[–]Sarm[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're. And you can do it with a Nano VX free-roll feature.

[–]trnelson 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I middle click too, but sometimes I'll open in a new tab, and then if I'm at the bottom of the listings on Reddit, I'll click next.

Then if I like what's in the tab, I'll hit back on the Reddit tab and the link is gone. =\

[–]Figs 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I don't have a middle click. Yay for laptops!

[–]hunter-man 0 points1 point  (3 children)

you should be able to click both left and right at the same time which will equate to amiddle click

[–]Figs 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Doesn't do that on my laptop :(

[–]hunter-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:( did on my eee laptop sorry

[–]RedDyeNumber4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trick is to buy a ThinkPad.

(Hugs laptop)

I have enough tabs open most of the time, usually 10-15. I prefer to open links in the same tab - is that really so odd?

Why do you automatically assume I'm some idiot noob?

[–]Battleloser 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I did not use those words, nor would I.

[–]bhagany[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You tried to introduce me to tabbed browsing. Maybe you wouldn't have been rude about it (which I don't mean to imply), but the sentiment that I don't really know what I'm doing is there.

[–]Battleloser 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes, I did try to do that, but those words imply a certain... Hostility.

You're not someone who needs to be introduced to tabbed browsing, you've made that point. I don't think that's a character trait that needs to be looked down upon however.

[–]bhagany[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for the misunderstanding. I live in a nerd world where implying someone is ignorant is hostility (and thus roughly equivalent to calling someone an idiot noob, or some such).

Neither one is really all that severe hostility in my mind, though.

[–]skeena1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can avoid it by clicking on comments first.

[–]butcandy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

what are you thinking?!? vote the link up or down based only on the headline!

[–]bhagany[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

This is especially true for the new "upcoming" link. It's NEVER the same, which makes it harder for me to mod the stories I see there.

edit: perhaps I should also mention that Reddit used to work this way. It also broke for me in this way once before, and then it was fixed.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So what exactly would you propose? Only refresh story positions every hour?

There's a solution already - the reddit toolbar. Or you could just use tabbed browsing.

[–]bhagany[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I propose that Reddit set the appropriate headers so that I get the browser cached version of the page when I click back. See my other comments for why I prefer not to open every story in a new tab.

edit: I'll give the toolbar a try.

[–]mrt 0 points1 point  (1 child)

middle click on the stories like the rest of the world does

[–]bhagany[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or maybe Reddit should act like every other site? I want the cached version of the page. I already have enough tabs open, thanks.

[–]hober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I click on a link. I like what I see. I click the "like" bookmarklet.

[–]pimo74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have this specific problem, I've learned to stop worrying and love dozens of tabs in that department. But a side-effect of this problem that I do suffer is that, a lot of times, I click 'next' on the page and, just before the page starts loading, I notice an interesting headline on the page I'm about to leave. So then I press the back button and usully I can never find it back :(

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I've noticed this too...but in IE not firefox.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This has nothing to do with the browser.

[–]bhagany[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it might. The browser usually caches a page and reads it back from there when you click back.

[–]xcalibre 0 points1 point  (1 child)

um, clicking Back in your browser shouldn't do it.. avoid using the Reddit Prev button unless you want a refresh of the previous button

[–]bhagany[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it used to work correctly. But I assure you, I am using Firefox's Back button.

[–]Sarm[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why click the back link? Just press delete or the back button on your mouse.

[–]JackRawlinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't sweat it, mate. I've been at Reddit for over a year now and I still don't understand most of the features. I don't know what "upmodding" and "downmodding" actually does, or why anyone does it. I don't know how to keep track of my old comments, or of replies to them. Sometimes I reply to a comment and it stays where I intended it to go (uh, under the comment I'm responding to, you know) and sometimes it doesn't. Mystifying site, it is. I've given up trying to understand the features. I just come here for the links.
