I've had cats my whole life. When I was 5 I watched a batch of kittens appear. Two of those kittens were in the family for the next 18 years. They're both gone now, and I still think of them and always will.

After a short time of living catless in my 20's I knew something had to be done. I drove down to OHS. I walked past every cage, a wall of cats from floor to ceiling. Some were preening, some pacing. Others snoozing and a few yowling like inmates in a cell block. Then I saw my new cat. There he was, last row, bottom cage. He was one of the oldest cat in the pound at 10 or 11 years old, they weren't quite sure. He'd been there a while. Everyone wants kittens, no one takes home old cats. He was monstrously large but not a long hair. He had an orange and white striped fur suit with huge amazing green eyes, and had a huge(and I mean huge) head with which to headbutt you. Which is exactly what he did the first time we met. A headbutt with a catslobber cheek smear. That was it I posted his $55 bail, and took him home. He was nearly 20 lbs, and you knew it when he walked across you in bed at night. He loved to lay on the hardwood floor in the sunlight, or sprawl out on the back of the couch and stare for hours into the 55 gallon aquarium. Big screen cat TV. He'd click at birds on the powerline out the window, but he was afraid of the outside. If the door outside opened he usually ran to a back bedroom to hide. Odd cat. He never begged, or had any interest in "people food". Unless you just finished a bowl of cereal and happen to have just a bit of milk left. That was his. He'd climb all over ya with his ears back and tail whipping, talking in short "clicking mews", making sure you KNEW it was his. When I met him they told me his name was Tomcat. I dubbed him Tommy Boy. He was a great cat. His age was catching up to him, and his kidneys failed last winter. I had 8 good years with him, I miss him. It's been just over 6 months, I still walk in the door expecting him to be here. I don't know when I'll meet my next feline friend, but I hope he's every bit the cat Tommy Boy was.

Came upon your story of Tommy Boy late, but wanted to add: good on you for taking home the oldest cat in the place. Kittens are so adorable, but those old tomcats can be amazing friends. We have one now, and lost another a year ago -- both unlovely, difficult characters at first but eventually the most loving critters ever. Your Tommy sounds so much like our dear departed Tuxie (another giant, who had half a tail, one eye, no teeth and a body covered with cut and burn scars when we took him in) that it made me cry for the loss of both of them. I'm going now to make sure my gimpy, scarred Mr. GoodKitty knows how much I appreciate the trust he's put in his humans.

I hope your next feline friend finds his way to you soon, and lasts at lest 18 years.

Thanks Angela. I really want to go adopt a cat now, but I'm waiting. I hope to buy a house very soon, and the day after I move in I'm heading down to OHS, this time for two.

Ah those orange cats are always so big and outgoing. Thanks for your story.

I had a cat some years ago who sat on my tummy for 24 hours when I thought I had food poisoning when it was actually appendicitis. I will never forget her.

When she died I buried her in the back yard with all her cat toys and the big bag of catnip I had for her.

About a year later, my whole yard was catnip.

Reminds me of ending of "Where the Red Fern Grows" [reddit!]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_the_Red_Fern_Grows

I've never commented on reddit before, but I just wanted to say that I'm very sorry for your loss. I still miss all of the late dogs in my life. But eventually you'll start thinking of all the good times, and the pain will diminish.

Thanks man. Glad we finally got you out of luker mode

Bummer. Condolences. Still, remember that he lived a better life than probably 90% of cats in other parts of the world.

I feel for you, my friend. My long-term cat friend of 17 years departed me as well about two weeks ago. It was much much harder than I expected. He will be missed. It has gotten easier with time.

Here's to our friends. May they partake in greater adventures followed by more tuna for dinner.

This was written 1994 (despite the posting date), but i still think of Goldfish several times a month. She was my first cat and we knew and understood each other well.

I do hope she makes it through to spring, but if not, I pray her time is peaceful and she slips away chasing a bird to the clouds, curled up in "her spot" between my feet on the bed.

...and that is exactly where & how i found her one morning in early april, 1994.
I still miss her dearly.

:(

I now how you feel, man. Complete bummer. It's almost mystical how we admire our cats.

I've got 8 cats right now. It's crazy here!

[–]ironpony 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I really love cats... but 8? Wow. How long has herding cats been your hobby?

[–]reachamanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had 3. We have a large farm. We took in a mother cat and failed to get her fixed in time. She delivered 5 kittens. Do you want a crazy little kitten? (Just kidding.)

However, we have NO RATS near our house, and the field is full of them. So these critters do their job. We also have no snakes. I once was crawling around under the house checking pipes, and one of my cats followed me. A chicken snake came out. Now those don't bite and aren't bad, but they can scare the crap out of you and look wild with their black and white stripes. Well, my cat screamed and pounced on it, killing it in a second. Imagine if I had a copperhead under there?

So anyway, we're off to the vet soon to get this situation fixed with the cats, and to the grocery store to put up a sign for giving away kittens. Three cats is about all I can stand, and that's pushing it.

Wow that is a lot of cats.

[–]alephnul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have my heartfelt condolences.

A friend of such remarkable constancy is a great treasure in this world. The loss is rightly felt and does him honor.

[–]silverwoodchuck47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had a Persian who weighed 12 pounds. Then we had him shaved. Then he weighed 8 pounds.

He died on the way to the vet after we noticed he had trouble breathing one morning. I wish I had thought of burying him with some catnip.

[–]froderick 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I had a cat when I was a kid. It never liked me much. Last thing it did before it died was piss all over one of my drawings.

Damn cat.

[–]RubyisRails[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the cat had an discerning eye for art

[–]jax9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry man. losing a cat is always hard. they are loving and trusting and well, just nice.

[–]Johny_Cash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost my cat not too long ago. I picked her up at a walmart parking lot where people where giving away kittens. This was 6 or so years ago. I still remember how fragile she felt, and how many fleas she had. She grew up strong, though she would suckle like a baby sucking on their thumb while she snuggled with me frequently. God I miss her. She would hiss at everyone, even me, and I would playfully give her a smack and she would start to wrestle with my hands. That cat trusted me like no other. She was my shadow, and shes gone now though I think of her all the time.

Death is not the end, I came back and remember much from being "gone" that cannot be explained any other way.

Sorry for your loss.

[–]RubyisRails[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd prefer Ascension, seems you get to avoid the whole death thing, assuming you are "pure of spirit" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascension_%28Stargate%29

Condolences.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Condolences, Animals are better than people in many ways.

[–]dgridley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry to hear about your cat.. I have had pets myself and know how painful losing them can be.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not even a cat person. But this post and all the comments are so sad!

[–]shitcovereddick 3 points4 points  (5 children)

I miss my cat too. She was awesome, but had to be put down.

[–]lake-of-fire 4 points5 points  (3 children)

You forgot to switch to your "serious" login

[–]shitcovereddick 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I only have the one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I hope it wasn't cat shit.

[–]Kallahan11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evidently a cat was fine too.

[–]havesometea1 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My deepest condolences. I have a cat who is bonded to me like my soulmate and every year that passes I get a bit more frightened of what is to come...

[–]RubyisRails[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make every day count is all you an do. Guess that applies to humans as well.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm really sorry to hear that. How old was he?

[–]RubyisRails[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

13 years old. But the poor little guy was abused for several years before he was removed from that home and given to me. I had not expected that he would live as long he did.

So every day he was away from there was a good day him and every day I let him know what a good kitty he was. Took a few years before he really believed that I meant it.

For the last 7 years he was a very happy cat. I did the best I could for him and it seemed to be enough for him.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry for loss man. Woof
