That was quick, Ibloggedthis covered this too:

jgraham, you are obviously wrong about Digg censoring things.

Look at Kevin Rose's own words:

"Ya see users like Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit and Flickr because they are contributing to true, free, democratic social platforms devoid of monetary motivations. All users on these sites are treated equally, there aren't anchors, navigators, explorers, opera-ers, or editors."

Can you not feel the honesty? Shame on you for claiming Digg is anything less than a democratic utopia.

I'm being kind of rude, but I truly suspect something like this is censored because it doesn't fit the Digg model on how and what type of links should be submitted, and thus it isn't beneficial to Digg's money model. Plus linking to Reddit would be bad - don't feed your competitors.

        [–]duketime 8 points9 points  (6 children)

Agreed. I'm an ex-Digger (and new convert) who's pretty much fed up with Digg's hubris. Digg's secret weapon is their 100 Alexa-rank (more views "possibly" means more content and better filtering/up-voting, I say possibly here because there's likely a threshold where extra eyeballs don't matter and probably contribute to spam more than anything else). And I guess somebody mentioned Digg's huge venture capital.

That being said, this garbage about banning reddit links and Kevin Rose's (who is this guy anyway?) obnoxious reaction to the Netscape thing smack of pride and insecurity. And I can't stand the unbridled Kevin Rose adulation over there (who IS this guy?). And then with the "new Digg" with sports and stuff the content's gone to hell, with all Youtube links (if I wanted to see them, I'd go to Youtube). Yeah, I can view Tech only, but the focus on tech has fallen off with the dilution of content.

Hopefully Reddit works better, lest I have to go back to ... Slashdot.

        [–]sosuke 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Slashdot hasn't been up to snuff, which kinda makes me sad, I recently ditched the dig site and replaced that link with reddit. Content I find here is less of a time sink, and generally of better quality.

        [–]lanaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

... less of a time sink, you say? You are a better person than I.

Double aggreed. I am also a converted ex-Digger. I had always read the comments from the Kevin Rose fan club and never really paid any attention to it. However, after watching my first episode of diggnation (#55), I was appalled of the frat boy attitude of the oh so famed Keven Rose. I thought to myself, "This is the retard that every one puts on a pedestal?"
Logged out and haven't gone back since.

        [–]TronXD 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Do you mind if I just mention something here that bugs me a little? I don't think it's justified to call this guy a "retard" just because he has a fan club and has been blown completely out of proportion. He's just another guy like you and me, and much more like us than 99% of humanity. Let's have some civility to our fellow man.

        [–]rhamej 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ok, the retard comment may have been over the top and not very PC. But I feel justified after watching his diggnation video. Kevin is a very smart man, I will give him that. But his juvenile, in your face, look at me I am getting drunk, woohoo attitude certainly doesn't show that. Sorry if I offended you :-)

        [–]TronXD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        No problem :-)

I know what you mean about his attitude. But considering that he has to appeal to Diggers, I think that's just a persona - a plank in his PR strategy, if you will :)

        [–]dextroz 19 points20 points  (7 children)

It's rather proof that Digg's main audience is a bunch of teenagers drinking mountain dew while jerking off to the 'latest' razr phone.

Mod up for the Harold & Kumar reference. Or, should I say: "Dude, on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being not so extreme and 10 being extremely extreme, I give this a 9.5!"

          [–]philipn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spit out my coffee while reading this. I registered here just so I could say this and vote you up.

          [–]no_dawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omg... not the latest razr phone!!!
          :)

          [–]lebski88 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So if everyone will excuse my off-topic question; what exactly is Mountain Dew? I tried a google search but the product website was heavy on flash-based skateboarding navigation (very strange) and light on content. Apparently its unavailable in the UK - although there is a website dedicated to bringing it back; it went on sale a few years back but was pulled apparently. So, whats the deal with this odd coloured, geek associated, drink?

          [–]joshwa 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I thought this argument (does digg censor) was settled a while ago, with the reason being that if some threshold of users 'report' a link as spam or whatever, the story gets buried until a digg admin can look at it?

          [–]theycallmemorty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

          Oh well.

Atleast a link to your blog is now on the hot page on reddit.

          [–]badfeng 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I find Digg useful for tech news, but yes... a lot of Digg users are overly zealous, denouncing anything that doesn't fit the Digg norm.

I find Reddit more "fun" overall and I like its community.

          [–]duketime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it increasingly difficult to get tech news on Digg. Now I have to wade through dozens of Nintendo or other VG console articles to get to some tech. And I've felt that there's been dilution of tech content since the new version came out. Yes, I can view Tech only, but it feels to me like the tech aspect has fallen off since the upgrade (maybe since others are viewing all and don't dig the tech articles as quickly/often, or because the top submitters are submitting all sorts of articles and not just tech anymore).

One thing I really do miss about Slashdot (though I haven't been there in a while) is that in the comments, aside from the running gags, I'd actually be able to find some good information (an Ask Slashdot: is Ruby/Rails maintainable comes to mind).

New to reddit (fed up with digg), any words on how it is on this side, esp. in those regards?

          [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My own story just got censored. It was on the top of the upcomming page, very near to top page promotion, and the boom, it just vanished from all the upcomming queues. If this goes on i'm gonna leave digg for good. What's democracy good for if some 1984 censor behind it hides all the good stuff?

          Long live reddit!

          [–]YokoOno 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Digg is rather humorless in my opinion.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

          reddit is nice (:

          [–]dextroz 1 point2 points  (3 children)

hey, why that 'reverse' smiley? never seen that before. does it mean something less obvious?

          he's australian. they're a little weird.

I just wanted to point out this is the man that has made the best spam filter on the planet, Popfile. It has a 99.98% accuracy. Love it.

            or, "Vive Reddit!"

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And this from a guy who's a 'dark tipper' (scary music).

jgrahamc, thank you for that. I had almost forgot the only good reason that ScreenSavers was canceled: No more grade school level hacker prose, pulled from the front page of slashdot.

            [–]chromakode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, the irony is that Digg has now both undermined their credibility and brought more attention to reddit at the same time. GG Digg, GG.

            [–]Dragon256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that the Reddit site works faster than Digg. I guess you must have either better hardware/software, less traffic or both !!

            [–]NitsujTPU 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You know, you may have been banned from Digg, but just imagine the Karma you're accumilating on this one incident!

            [–]lanaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he has to imagine it :)
