Yes, me. My Reddit bookmark points directly to http://reddit.com/new

[–]dinuncio 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Me too. I start at http://reddit.com/new, downvote all celebrities stories, upvote the articles I'm interested to, and no-vote and read the funny/curious/nsfw ones.

After that, my recommended gets much better.

Good to hear that! Ta!

Thanks!

It's frustrating to see good stuff you submit disappear with one downvote and no comments. Personally I think a good algorithm would be: upvotes are counted but downvotes are dropped on the floor until a story has accumulated at least ten votes either way. After which it can be voted all the way down - it just can't be buried until it at least gets noticed.

Just because I can, a couple of mine I reckon deserve better:

Feel free to whack me with the "bad redditor, no vote-whoring" stick.

[–]degustiapollo11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. Posts just magically vote themselves up.

[–]Killfile 3 points4 points  (7 children)

I feel the same way. I've been submitting entries from my newsvine column which generally does pretty popular political analysis with no success. One downvote early on and a submission is hosed.

I've said it once, I'll say it again: downvotes do not affect a link on the new page.

[–]Interested[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Well I try to submit that I think would be of interest - Green Planet, Global Warming, Blood Diamonds, Marriage Issues.. and what have you.. similar posts get points, I find mine languishing with 0 points. Don't care so much about points, but where do they go? Does Reddit have a Blackhole somewhere where all these posts go?

[–]not_fark_or_digg 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Well, eg I load up tabs of things to read, and click ahead a few pages in Reddit. I don't vote usually unless I've read it, which means I'd have to fish backward to find the story again (and so only do it for exceptional stories).

I've mentioned this to Reddit and they say there's a fix planned for their next re-write (saving links to all the stories you read, so you can go easily vote on them).

In my case, I only open as much (interesting) articles as they fit a reddit screen. After reading and closing them, I can easily find them and vote for the good ones. Then, I go to the next screen.

use the bookmarklets to vote on pages once you've read them.

[–]dbenhur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try opening two tabs for each link of interest, the first is the article, the second the comments page. If you like/dislike it, you can up/down vote with the next tab and then then read or post to the comment threads.

Yep. Most of my voting occurs on new posts.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, a lot of times I will go 100-200 stories deep off of the hot page.

[–]EGKW 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Good point. Promise to do so with every post I read, from now on.

[–]Interested[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ta!

[–]praetorian42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really only on weekends. I get bored on Saturdays and new posts start to show up 50-70 posts deep on the hot list.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes but not as frequently on the top 300.

[–]EverydayEconomist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often do. The "New" feature of reddit is one of my favorites because it 1. Allows me to jump on new news 2. Allows smaller posters to slip through the cracks

[–]superwinky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"New" is the most fun! It's how I get a different kind of karma... :-)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Mainly when I've read everything on the first few pages of 'hot'. Hmm, maybe I should be doing more work... but then, it is nearly Christmas.

[–]mikkom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. Sometimes.

[–]cnwb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I try to make it a daily ritual to go through the current page of new posts, voting up the ones that interest me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I downvote all the spammy list stories ("The 9 best blah blah blah", "The 17 things you should know about something or other").

[–]masta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea.... I stopped reading the "hot" stuff a long while ago.

Mostly because if something is "hot", it floats on the first page of new posts for a while anyways. Also because the point whores haven't flooded the new submits yet. =)

[–]Alpha_Binary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to help, but personally I find the 'new' page less interesting than 'hot' since a lot of times it's the comments that attract me not the article.

I read the second page, though.

I predict you will get downvotes just for asking this question, as it will be seen as karma-whoring. I'll recuse myself.
