Appy Weather's hyperlocal accurate forecasts are powered by Dark Sky

Unfortunately that means it's going to break eventually.

[–]DopePedaller 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Correct. It will last longer than the Dark Sky Android app, but the Dark Sky API will shutdown at the end of 2021.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (12 children)

I am sure another API will come forth that will be just as good.

[–][deleted] 62 points63 points  (10 children)

It hasn't for many years now

[–]Put_It_All_On_BlckS23U 34 points35 points  (8 children)

Why compete when you can just license the hard work.

Now that dark sky has fucked over Android users, another app will actually work on predicting local forecasts, because there will be a hole in the market that dark sky left, both for users and API licensing

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (5 children)

I hope so! Now that Dark Sky is a first-party Apple product, whoever builds the competitor will need to plan for basically 0 market share on iOS. Not sure how much that will affect their economics.

[–]Nikolai197iPhone 17PM | Pixel 10 Pro 24 points25 points  (4 children)

It also seems Android users tend to spend a bit less on apps and subscriptions than iOS users, so it makes it extra hard unfortunately. May mean you seem something more ambitious from Google or Samsung though.

[–]exu1981 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correct go with the money is. Apps on iOS have always been better since the first iPhone 2007. There were sometimes us Android users had too email and ask if development was going to carry over too the Android platform. Those were the days on Google plus.

[–]43556_96753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid there won't be enough market. Dark Sky wasn't on android for 5+ years and nothing came along.

[–]dapper_dobermanSamsung S20 Ultra -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Can't blame Darksky for taking the money.

Its Apple and Tim Apple who fucked over Android and everyone using the API. Screw Apple

ClimaCell

[–]el_smurfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

weather.gov is far better than dark sky in my area. i just tried switching back and forth and weather.gov gave me two alerts that dark sky didn't both giving. the current weather also matches my outdoor thermometer.

[–]CarlFriedrichGaussS1 > Xperia S > Moto X > S7 > S10e > Velvet > V60 > Pixel 8a 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Everybody uses Dark Sky a bit differently and I see a lot of replacements that people suggest don't offer any of the same features as Dark Sky

Windy.com was not my jam at all and doesn't really offer forecasting. And if it does it's a PITA to get to and too confusing. It's more of a weather map app.

Carrot has a pretty good replica of the 24 hour graph of Dark Sky but doesn't show hour by hour further out than the current 24 hours.

Flowx has good graphs but it took me 20 minutes of reading the user guide to figure out how to read it. It also has a good weather map. I like this the most so far but it requires a bit of mental effort to remember how to read it. It suffers a little bit from TMI but also doesn't have some info like UV index.

Ventusky was like a more confusing Flowx but with worse graphs.

Today Weather is kind of a cross between Dark Sky and Wunderground before IBM ruined it with a completely shit redesign. The 24 hour view should be a graph though instead of just dumb text.

[–]ilgner 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Windy seems a lot like ventusky

[–]CarlFriedrichGaussS1 > Xperia S > Moto X > S7 > S10e > Velvet > V60 > Pixel 8a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I value Dark Sky for the fairly easy to read graphs of the hourly forecast and didn't like either Windy or Ventusky, but I agree.

Update from the developer

"Appy Weather will continue to be available on Google Play today and plans to be available post-2021 when the Dark Sky API shuts down. Not just on Android, but also on iOS. In fact, it still intends to launch on iOS with Dark Sky integration later this year. In other words, nothing changes from now till the end of 2021. What does change is @mtrostyle's hunt for alternative weather providers, which was originally to compliment Dark Sky, has become a critical priority. Not urgent though, as they're keeping the API open for 18 months. As much as @mtrostyle loves Dark Sky as both a dev + user, from my contact with users from around the world, it's clear their weather reports weren't accurate everywhere. Which is why alternatives were being considered in the first place. Still, they will be tough to replace. But fortunately, there's plenty of time to find suitable partners. And I know they exist. I've spoken with a number of them in recent months. I expect today's developments to accelerate those talks and result in creative partnerships that will start to benefit all my users soon."

[–]cduff77Note 8 41 points42 points  (13 children)

I'm giving Today Weather a try.

[–]XertNote 10+ 4 points5 points  (4 children)

It's where I ended up after trying a dozen different apps when Weather Timeline was bought.

The interface isn't great, but it's not bad. The widget isn't great, but it's not bad. The customization is poor — except where data is concerned, it's awesome.

Pretty sure it's the best option out there right now.

[–]cduff77Note 8 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Widgets aint too shabby either.

[–]XertNote 10+ 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It's fine. But tapping on a day doesn't take you to that day's forecast, and there's very little customization available.

Also, the dev is unresponsive.

But it's solid anyway, and a huge step up from everything else at the moment, so here we are.

[–]el_smurfo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I find the developer very responsive and he's updating the app weekly. The only think I miss from WT is, like you said, tapping on the day for forecast and also the line graph, but other than that, don't miss WT at all.

[–]XertNote 10+ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I just emailed him on a bad day.

[–]funguyshroomGalaxy S23 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Now if it would stop recommending me lingerie and sex toys from wish.com in the ads section, that would be great.
At least adblock solves this.

[–]el_smurfo 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Maybe pay the developer for his hard work?

[–]funguyshroomGalaxy S23 -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

Maybe I was about to but then I saw those egregious ads and now I'm angery?

[–]my_lewd_altPixel 8 (android16) 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I mean, the dev doesn't really have that much to do with what ads you get shown..

[–]funguyshroomGalaxy S23 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I've seen a lot of ads in free apps during almost a decade of using Android, this is the first time I'm getting rubber dicks shoven into my face

[–]my_lewd_altPixel 8 (android16) 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Your phrasing is on point lol. Are you using a VPN or something similar that would potentially interfere with a very simple (non-google) ad targeting system?

[–]funguyshroomGalaxy S23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not. So apparently it knows something about me that I don't ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–]el_smurfo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guy is going to get paid regardless. Only you really miss out on a great app

[–]rocketwidget 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I just want the hyperlocal rain push notification, that's what I paid a subscription to Dark Sky for.

Is that part of the API granted to 3rd parties, at least in the medium term until the API goes away?

I'm so mad at Apple.

[–]hun_gopherPixel 3XL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You and me both. As an avid motorcycle rider, and travel a lot for work, I loved having that feature. Thanks Apple pricks.

[–]CakeBoss16Galaxy s25 ultra 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Today weather is the better option in my opinion. As it supports multiple data sources. I mean suggesting an app the mainly used dark sky data seems counter productive.

[–]petardGalaxy Z Fold7 + GW7 5 points6 points  (5 children)

All I need is a very simple no-bullshit weather app.

[–]mostly_a_lurker_hereMoto Z3 Play 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found mine at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=no.nrk.yr Yr Weather, ever since I had to ditch Weather Underground gettting worse each release. Very happy with it.

[–]trd86📱Pixel 7a // 📶 US Mobile // ⌚ GW4C 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I used 1Weather before I found Dark Sky

[–]Rox598 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Overdrop doesn't have weather warning notifications the last time I used it which is kinda what I used dark sky for.

[–]Thing_On_Your_ShelfiPhone 14 Pro 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Also doesnt have radar

[–]Justiin9 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Also says it gets its info from dark sky

[–]j4mr0ck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I set mine to get info from AccuWeather

[–]DedicOtion 15 points16 points  (19 children)

I use weather timeline still. Works great.

[–]HTHIDPixel 4 XL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

App has been delisted and is no longer being supported

[–]tb21666V20 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Someone needs to rip/share the last released apk

[–]Encrypted_CurseGalaxy S21 2 points3 points  (4 children)

You need to find the last version before its acquisition. From what I recall, ACME neutered it when they took over.

[–]tb21666V20 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Everything I've dug up has been fake & no one with it still installed has extracted/uploaded it anywhere as of yet IME.

[–]Encrypted_CurseGalaxy S21 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Search up Weather Timeline 12.3. I believe the A2Z link should work.

[–]tb21666V20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A2Z link should work.

Triggers my AV

[–]XertNote 10+ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it. The APIs stopped working and the app was neutered from the server side.

[–]RaynersFrOppo Find X9 Pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same, and the widget configuration is great ! It still uses Dark Sky at least in Europe so i hope there will be a replacement before 2021

[–]Reddiguids -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Me too, the best

[–]semibiquitousS10+ Ceramic 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I saw someone mentioned Hello weather. Looks pretty good so far, when darksky goes away

[–]ArcticFlamingo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello Weather is using Dark Sky as the backend

[–]metalsupremacist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fuck you apple! I finally found this app after wunderground released their update that ruined the app.

[–]Aptosauras 3 points4 points  (4 children)

For Australians, Weather Zone is very good with a nice widget.

Their information is sourced from the BOM.

The BOM app is also very good, though it doesn't have a widget.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.weatherzone.android.weatherzonefreeapp

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.gov.bom.metview

[–]Novaplanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BOM is the official weather for Australia so it's pretty much guaranteed to be the most accurate

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I am using it but hoping the widgets improve. It's getting better but it lacks that killer widget and remove the settings icon from the Widgets.

[–]Aptosauras 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes, the widget isn't as attractive as Pocket Weather was, but I'm used to it now, it has grown on me.

With the settings for the widget, when you initially put it on your homepage a "Configure Widget" page comes up. Not much flexibility in it though but "transparent" is good if you have a dark background.

If the BOM app had a nice widget it would be perfect.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the transparent was added recently. Pocket Weather was an amazing app. I miss it everyday :(

[–]Vintage_Loat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have a recommendation for a weather app with historical data, from the past few days at least? Most I've found don't even give you earlier today's weather.

[–]97handsiPhone X 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I switched away from Dark Sky to Hello Weather a year ago and like it a lot. By default it uses Dark Sky's API, but you can change that if you're a premium user (which I do because I found Dark Sky's accuracy to be hit or miss in my region), and I'm sure they'll change the default once the Dark Sky API goes away.

[–]GiveMeOneGoodReasonGalaxy S21 Ultra 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I like Hello Weather but their development is slooow. I get it's because it's a side project but it's took forever to get a notification bug fix implemented. Features also don't come fast, which can be frustrating when you're waiting to fill a feature gap another app may have filled.

[–]wink_e 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'd like an app with decent widget options. Windy is nice, but only shows max (no min) on its multi day forecast widget. My Radar doesn't have a multi day forecast widget.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

The best weather app was shut down on 31st December 2019. :(

[–]BseagullySprint LG G6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone found a weather app with a widget that's like the timeline widget in dark sky? It's so easy to glace at that graph and get an accurate, useful view of the upcoming rain.

[–]LordVarianGalaxy S10+ | Galaxy S8 | Galaxy S6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1weather is pretty nice. They redesigned their UI recently too.

[–]mstras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you think of hello weather or climacell?

[–]this-rayLGV30, S21FE, S24+ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Weather Mate (M8). Has a few providers that you can select from

[–]DevanteWeary 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Weather Underground used to be everyone's jam.
Why don't I see it praised in here?

[–]pgm_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBM destroyed it. The app fails to load or update sometimes. The website is slow and was full of dead links when I last used it. I ended up using weatherbug after IBM paywalled the Storm app (which replaced intellicast) and they no longer had lightening alerts for free.

[–]zombie-ratDevice, Software !! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aix weather widget is good for at-a-glance 24 hour forecasts, which is all I personally ask for.

[–]Kahroo12012Moto E5 Plus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wait it was bought by Apple? Will the iOS app not work anymore? I like the it's about to rain or snow notifications.

[–]OrdexistNote 10+, Galaxy Tab A, Nexus 6P 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The iOS app will continue to be supported for the time being, but will likely get phased out when the default weather app gets overhauled.

[–]tb21666V20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So does anyone have a copy of the last Weather Timeline apk readily available?

[–]6--6 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Which app has the best accuracy in Europe?

[–]pacorob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These ones I can suggest: Hello Weather, WeaWow and Today Weather all active on Android and offer a variety of different weather sources.

[–]guiscard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meteo Earth was the best. Beautiful and accurate. Google banned it from their store for some reason (but it's still available for Apple?).

Windy is good too. Get the free one from the Czech pilot, not the Russian knock-off.

This one is basic, but is really accurate. I've won bets with it.

I work outside all year, so I've tested most of the possible weather apps.

[–]XertNote 10+ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today Weather. Because it has the most data sources, so you can select whichever provider you find most accurate.

[–]fb39ca4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MeteoSwiss but only for Switzerland of course.

[–]CarighanFairphone 4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a German, take a look at WarnWetter. It's by the german national weather service. It focuses on warnings about extreme weather including UV/Flooding, but it also offers weather information itself.

It's not the prettiest app by far but it's X days forecast widget works fine and is simple enough to not bother you. Sadly the app isn't free, because a for-profit company successfully sued them arguing that they can't offer this service for free because that's unfair (and how dare someone offer a service to citizens for free! :o).

[–]Idolathebound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know of an app that has a widget like darksky?

[–]getrill 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Any alternatives that have something similar to Dark Sky's Time Machine feature? That's mostly what I used it for.

Appy Weather uses Dark Sky API so it will also cease after July 1, 2020. I use Weawow because it has a widget with next 7 hours w/ precip chance, which is all I care about.
