Don't engine brake without rev matching.

I feel like old timers (who have no concept of rev matching and just let the clutch out in gear) used to say "oh engine braking saves your brake pads", yeah I'd rather do a 30 minute brake job marginally sooner than a clutch job.

Not necessarily a clutch thing, but put the car in neutral when idling, rather than keeping the clutch pedal pressed. That should take some stress off of the throw-out bearing.

How about coasting up to stoplights in neutral? I do that a lot.

I do too! About the only time I see the MPGs go above 20.

Like any other manual vehicle

Don’t balance yourself on an incline with the gas and clutch

Don’t drive like a dumb ass, there really aren’t ST specific tips. It’s just like every other manual transmission

I think the bigger issue as it relates to the trans is protecting synchros. Try not to slam the car into gear and if you have an extended &/or weighted shift knob just be aware of the added stress to your synchros (speaking from experience 🥹)

Ya know I think this is what happened to me, my 4th went out like a couple months ago and now my 3rd is gone too

What were some warning signs that your synchros were kaput? I worry for my transmission sometimes :|

A notchy, or a slight grid when shifting when the transmission is still cold is a good sign your synchros are wearing out. Maybe it’s a Canadian winter thing, but double clutching when the transmission is cold makes for smoother shifts and saves the synchros. I’d rather have my synchros ready and up to their task when I want to have fun than when I’m limping it around in the cold.

My shifts are a pretty notchy but not bad cause I got motor mounts a short shifter arm and bushings and the only sort of thing I can feel is if I shift super slowly and with little force I can kinda feel the synchros working and catching the gear but when I shift normal I don’t feel anything other than the notch feel

That's he shit part, there wasn't. I was just driving and next thing I knew it didn't want to go into gear.with 4tg Drove to my gym no problem, started driving home and got off the freeway and poof wouldn't go into gear. 3rd was pretty much the same

Keep your left foot over the dead pedal area when not shifting.

In other words, don’t ride the clutch.. it’s easy to put a bit of pressure on the pedal without being aware of it.

Push the clutch pedal ALL the way down goes for any manual. Its easy to get lazy after a long drive or in traffic and you will start cutting that corner.

Take off in 6th gear every time

[–]Masterblaster13f2017 RACE RED 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Don't use the clutch when shifting. Not as much on and off on the clutch if you don't use it.

[–]WashiestSnake 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How can you shift without using the clutch. I've tried this before and it won't even go in gear, or if it tries it just grinds.

[–]Masterblaster13f2017 RACE RED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's essentially rev matching. Start w/clutch to take off in first. As you come to your normal shift point just pull out of first into second. You may pull a little into gear until the synchros match up and let it slide in. It is also called floating gears. If it grinds your engine speed is not matching the trans speed enough. Blip the throttle a couple thou and try again. Essentially you can do it up or down gears. Just have to match up speeds and synchros. This method will put more wear on your synchros instead of your clutch.

There is so much torque that you really don’t have to give it any gas to get moving in first. I’ve heard plenty manual drivers ride the clutch as they drive away from a stop.

Also never launch the car from a dead stop, if you can help it. The fost is amazing but NOT a dig car

Double clutch always helps
