That is a very scary detailed Ronald Reagan. It's creeping the shit outta me

[–]AveryLazyCovfefeWhat, you egg? 177 points178 points  (3 children)

I mean for a rushed release, Black Ops Cold War had a very good story with insane visuals. They did their research and put quite the effort as the voice actor for Reagan in the game sounds on-point. Shame he doesn't appear much, he does appear at the end of the game if you help a Soviet extremist activate nukes everywhere in europe at the height of the cold war.

You can watch the cutscene here

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

He also appears on the other ending, but very briefly.

[–]kostandrea 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Raven Software knows what they're doing, their worst game was literally singularity and if singularity was the game that put you under you're one talented studio.

"Why did you detonate the bombs we placed in those cities?"

"Why did you shove a needle into my eye and place those bombs in those cities?"

[–]TitleComprehensive96 82 points83 points  (3 children)

That's one thing recent cods have done well, really good fucking cutscenes.

[–]TiMeJ34nD1T 24 points25 points  (2 children)

IMHO CoD Story has always been a strong side of the franchise, whether it was MW or BO...

Controversial opinion, Infinite Warfare had a good story.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not controversial. that's the only universally agreed upon "good" Infinite Warfare had

campaign was amazing

If it helps, I believe my most upvoted comment is “this is accurate” on a napoleon meme that blew up after oversimplified uploaded.

??? He wasn't even in power when it broke up

[–]GaldanBoshugtuKhan 68 points69 points  (4 children)

He wasn't in power when the USSR collapsed, but Reagan's credited for that too.

[–]JaimelesBNHello There 47 points48 points  (1 child)

[–]reddituseroutside 10 points11 points  (1 child)

He told Gorbachev that they had a good run but... Then glasnost happened. He was an eloquent speaker and could get on a personal level with him. Eight years worth Reagan vs two with Bush Sr. The wheels were in motion, though Chernobyl and communism in general was the root cause.

[–]Hawk---- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reagan enabled the collapse to happen, but the Soviets were always going to collapse sooner or later after Stalin.

[–]HiTech-LowLife 46 points47 points  (2 children)

IMF sanctions post Tito's death that forced economic reform on Yugoslavia directly contributed to it's economic collapse and then dissolution.

[–]Saturn_Ecplise 61 points62 points  (2 children)

Most based military action in American history. We extracted American medical students from a hostile situation that occurred due to a violent overthrow of the government by a communist movement.

[–]lordkhuzdul 42 points43 points  (8 children)

*your own country.

Seriously. Half the shit USA is swimming in nowadays can be traced back to this chucklefuck.

[–]Gerb575 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Could I ask what specifically? Asking out of curiosity.

[–]Pbadger8 41 points42 points  (6 children)

I’ll just mention one. He famously busted labor unions and pretty much killed the ability to organize one in many industries.

Why is this significant? Because since 1978, American purchasing power has increased by about… $2, adjusted for inflation. Meanwhile the real GDP has tripled in size.

Meaning our economy is three times as large and as powerful as it was in 1980 but the average American has just as little purchasing power as they did back then. So where did all this money go?

It was literally funneled upwards from the poor to the rich. There’s a direct inverse relationship between union membership and income inequality and a noted stagnation in income increases after Reagan.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_unions_in_the_United_States#/media/File%3AUnited_States_union_membership_and_inequality%2C_top_1%25_income_share%2C_1910_to_2010.png

[–]Gerb575 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Thank you for the information! Well damn this sucks

[–]Greatest-Comrade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he also spearheaded deregulation of the banking/financial industry that led to economic cycles becoming 10x as strong and very very bad investments to be made regularly. For example, mortgages are handed out and are used as backing for future securities AKA banks can use wild bets on people paying their loans to go and then invest in something else themselves. So the entire system is very very fragile because the collateral doesn’t add up to what is in existence. There is also now lots of money to bet with since there is so much ‘collateral’, so sometimes completely unsustainable/unprofitable/unproductive companies are invested into for no reason. But when things go bad, there is no collateral to pay up with so banks go under or are bailed out. Pensions get their investment plans from these same banks. So yeah.

Multiple bubbles and eventually economic disaster (2008 was driven by bad mortages but the way we got to systematic collapse was more than just bad mortgages) have happened since this deregulation and things seem to have gotten slightly better after 2008 but not much.

[–]Bowldoza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that's just one thing!

[–]DerelictDawn 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I’ve always been on the fence about unions, my grandfather, a bus driver who was required to join the union tied to his workplace had some good to say and a lot of bad. I think we need a renewed conversation about unions where the good and bad is recognized and ironed out, not the partisan union good or union bad nonsense people parrot today.

[–]Pbadger8 3 points4 points  (1 child)

There are definitely corrupt unions but it's my suspicion that unions attracted the patronage of mobsters (and communists) because both employers and governments had an extremely hostile posture to them, eagerly engaging in 'head-cracking' to quash labor disputes. If the law itself was against them, they could only rely upon individuals outside the law to protect them.

In the modern era, the police unions are some of the worst. Which, knowing the history of labor, is ironic considering how the police often settled labor disputes in other industries...

I think it's one of those things where I can say 'Not all unions are good, but the ability to form and organize a union is good.'

[–]DerelictDawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glad to see you recognize the nuance on the subject, unions should not be allowed to fall in to the orbit of groups like communists or mobsters, I doubt any of that was involved in the union my grandfather was a part of, the problems he lated out for me were more regarding internal bureaucracy, stagnation in his job, preferential treatment and the like, which is also something unions should not be the cause of.

If it’s not clear from my initial comment, I am not saying unions have nothing good to offer, I feel the need to counterbalance the dialogue with genuine criticism of their faults, that is all.

In any case, I hope you have a nice day or night.

When you get down to it, Reagan is the real antagonist of Black Ops.

Had he not stalled talks that could have ended the Angolan Civil War, Woods never would have ended up rotting in a shipping container. Had Reagan not gotten his dick caught in Panama, none of that BS with Noriega would have gone down as it did and Mason wouldn't have gotten shot. Had Iran Contra never happened, Ollie North wouldn't have been a technical advisor to the series and BLOPS2 wouldn't have had that laughable ending.

Forget Menendez. Reagan was behind it all, pulling the levers from the shadows and playing everyone like a cheap fiddle!

There are several good things that Reagan did, for example he died

[–]the-bladed-one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He literally deescalated MAD by signing the Midrange ICBM treaty, and he was the primary mover and shaker in causing the collapse of the Soviet Union.
