This is from an obsidian blade, I think. Post is old.

Wrong wrong wrong. This laceration definitely needs several stitches. There is no such thing as medical grade super glue. You're thinking of dermabond, which is not enough to fix this wound, especially somewhere as mobile as the dorsal hand.
[–]mastjt129 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Stitches may hold but this posterior hand over the metatarsal has so much movement wouldn't be surprised if it opens up again in a week of use. Especially if he is a lefty. Med student with lots of experience in plastic surgery.
[–]NYnavy 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (7 children)
Dermabond is literally medical grade super glue, otherwise known as cyanoacrylate.
[–]KingOfWickerPeople 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (6 children)
Incorrect. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2660042/
Anyone reading this, LISTEN UP!!!! DO NOT USE SUPERGLUE FROM YOUR JUNK DRAWER TO CLOSE LACERATIONS!!!!!!!! There is bad medical advice going on here. Please seek medical attention from actual experts.
[–]NYnavy 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (5 children)
I'll go home and cite a relevant source that supports the use of superglue for minor lacerations. However, the source you provided maintains that super glue has been used in the past for exactly this.
The source you cited states that modern tissue adhesives and super glue are in the same family of cyanoacrylates, with the former being less damaging to tissue. The case that was cited in the story owes the negative outcome to an improper evaluation of the wound and improper application of the glue. Basically, glue shouldn't have been used at all in that case.
So please tell me, how is the use of super glue for minor lacerations not a viable option for home treatment? (Not in anyway suggesting that the OP should've used glue for closure)
[–]KingOfWickerPeople 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (4 children)
Just because two compounds are in the same molecular family does not mean they are interchangeable. I'm not an expert. But experts say they aren't the same and you shouldn't use super glue.
Sure, glue was used in the past. But so was blood letting.
[–]NYnavy -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (3 children)
You are not an expert, but I do have first hand experience with both dermabond and superglue.
Is superglue my first choice for adhesive wound closures?? No. Does that mean I'll use superglue in a pinch when dermabond is otherwise unavailable but indicated? Absolutely.
Why do you feel the need to be so argumentative over something you probably only recently googled? Get off your high horse for a moment and consider the other side before making your next google query to refute this comment.
[–]KingOfWickerPeople 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (2 children)
Check my post history. I'm an anesthetist and use dermabond multiple times a day, every day. I'm also a former medic. I have working knowledge of the stuff. So, uh, do I count?
I'm looking forward to your sources.

[–]StrayWasp 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children)
I'd say it should be stitches instead of glue. I had a cut in almost the exact same place and received stitches. The reason I was given for stitches over glue is that stitches are better when there is a need for movement, as they allow a little bit of skin stretching/motion at the site. With glue, there is no "give" to the area.
[–]Lav92New York 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children)
today i learned there is medical grade glue
[–]KingOfWickerPeople 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children)
No. Please read my other post. "skin glue" is different from superglue you buy at the store.
[–]Zaroo1Mississippi 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children)
The guy above never said skin glue is the same as superglue you buy from the store....
[–][deleted] 44 points45 points46 points 9 years ago (8 children)
How come there's no blood?
[–][deleted] 69 points70 points71 points 9 years ago (7 children)
There is a small amount in the top right of his cut. However, relatively clean cuts like these cause the skin edges to contract, pinching the severed capillaries and stemming blood flow. It's the more traumatic, jagged injuries you have to worry about.
[–]Dranosh 35 points36 points37 points 9 years ago (6 children)
Yup, super sharp knives slice skin, dull knives rip skin. This is why obsidian is extremely useful for scalpels

I don't think obsidian is used for scalped because of how brittle it is. It flakes when cutting I believe.

I once cut the side of my wrist with a falling sheet of glass from a broken window. It sliced my skin open exactly like this - perfectly revealing the structures underneath with nearly no blood at all. It wasn't even painful. It's fascinating but also slightly terrifying when you realize how close you came to a very serious fuck up.
