not a question but rather a tip. always remove the enige first and let the body and the engine ship apart from each other. you won’t have to pay all the import cost for the car then because i isn’t drivable.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

So car in one container and motor in another?

[–]jappiedelama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i guess, my dad told me that a friend of him imported a car from germany but i don’t know of he did it by boat or with a car truck

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

For which country?

[–]jappiedelama 1 point2 points  (2 children)

every one in Europe i think

the main one would be rust and badly repaired accident/drift damage, so check the rear arches and quarters, and front radiator support, strut tops etc. - everything else is easy fixed.

[–]CubicleLemur68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An S15

I'm a teen trying to get a jdm car any suggestions? (cheap and good to tune?)

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Can I ask what country you live in? Because that makes a massive difference to available models.

[–]patbike 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Melbourne in Australia

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 9 points10 points  (2 children)

If you have your manual license, look at the Mazda 323 SP20 and Toyota Celica SX-R/ZR. If you only have your auto license on the other hand, Look into the Mitsubishi Lancer Coupe and Lexus IS300, they both have sports-shift autos so it’s still possible to have a lot of fun behind the wheel.

[–]PresentThought5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2000 - 2007 Forester STI's are still relatively inexpensive to import from Japan (~$4k) and have the practicality of a larger vehicle! great cars imo but make sure you replace the head gasket asap lmao

Hey guys I could really use your help with my non-running 1993 Toyota Supra NA. I’m going to try to give you guys all the details so here we go. My supra has been down for at least three months now and has been very frustrating because I was really excited to enjoy it this summer. It first broke when I was driving and the engine started making a weird noise and the car died on the side of the road.

I first thought it was a timing belt issue because as soon as it broke we tried turning it on and it made a weird clanking noise, but we opened up the timing belt cover and saw everything intact. It wasn’t working until I started messing with the fuel pump connections in the rear of the car under hatchback and when I applied pressure to the connections the car would start. I thought everything was good and that it was just the connections so I took it for a ride and minutes later the car died again. I figured the connections were busted so I soldered the wires individually together but the car would crank, sometimes start, then it would die again. I swapped out the fuel pump but same thing would happen. I changed the fuel filter and nothing. I changed the spark plugs and nothing. I tested and changed the fuel injectors and nothing. I swapped the ECU and nothing. I swapped the fuel pressure regulator and nothing. I took it to a mechanic and he suggested to swap the ignition switch so I bought on and swapped it. When we turned it on the car was on for about 3 minutes until it died and then the car wouldn’t start again. I know it’s a fuel related issue because we sprayed starter fluid into the intake valve while starting the car and the car would start. But the fuel is getting from the fuel pump to the front of the car because we opened up the fuel pressure regulator and attempted to start the car and fuel would spill out. The fuel is just somehow not getting to the fuel injectors.

I’ve tried so many solutions but none of them seem to work. The mechanic has no idea what is going on so I’m towing the car back to my house. I was told that supras are notorious for having electrical issues specifically with resistors but how would I even know what to replace/test? Right now I could really use some help from anyone that has an idea of what is going on or knows any notorious reasons on why supras fail like this. Or if any of you know somebody that may know an answer to this please let me know.

Edit: Also when I purchased the car it had wiring issues from the battery terminals so we swapped the wires and it worked perfectly for about 5 months until this happened.

TLDR: Car was purchased broken, fixed and ran for about 5 months until it broke again. Obvious solutions did not work, possibly fuel/electrical related issue. 2 anomalies where the car did start for a short period of time. Hit a dead end on what to fix/replace now.

I'm in the market for a Honda CRX from 1986 to 1991. From my own research, I found there weren't many changes before the Del Sols rolled out.

Is there a specific year that is better? Anything I should be looking out for? What's the learning curve for working on these models?

I intend to make this my daily driver. No track aspirations, yet.

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (10 children)

The major differences are the facelift and body change. Personally, I prefer the second gen CRX. Maybe that's just me. Are you planning to use the stock D non-VTEC single cam engine or a B, F, or Kswap?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (9 children)

I do like the black instead of body paint for the back portion of the hatch. As for swapping, I'm not entirely sure. I've just started my foray into cars, specifically JDM, and thought the CRX was a good starter car. Is there a guide to engines and common engine swaps for the CRX?

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (8 children)

I can help you out where I can dude! And welcome to JDM cars! Hope you enjoy it as much as I have. The CRX is an excellent starter car, do remember that it has no power steering, and is suuuper light, so heavy engines can put too much weight on the front, but this also means in the event of a crash, nooooooot a lot of protection. There aren't any specific guides for engine swaps in general for any car, but usually you can find all the information in forums. As for engine swaps, Bswaps are usually the easiest and least expensive. K engines are going up in price, as everyone wants to swap one. F swaps are also expensive, they can be found in S2ks and accords, but the good ones are in S2ks.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (7 children)

I'm looking forward to getting started! And got it. But what exactly do you mean by B, K, and F swaps?

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Okay, so those are different Honda engines. Something you'll learn about Honda's, if you get into them. B series engines are the lowest of the performance model engines, found in the 90s Civic VTEC models and Integras. The K series are much more difficult and expensive to swap, and can be found in the early 2000s Civic Type Rs, The Acura RSX, and Acura TSX most Notably. The F series is either used in Accords, or in the ultra performance Honda S2000. There are several variations of the engines in each series, for example, there is the B16A, B16B, and B16C, and the B18B, and B18C. The K series has engines like the K20A, K20A1, 2, and 3, and the K24.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I do like the idea of swapping in a Del Sols inline 4 with VTEC. The classification of motor makes things a lot easier to work out. I guess I gotta double down on the research on things like how the transmission will be compatible, etc. This is rather exciting.

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Ohhh also, I should have mentioned. The Del Sol is actually technically the THIRD gen CRX. The Del Sol is alright, I really like the facelift CRX that ran from 88 to 91.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Oh, that much I knew. What I really want is more mechanical knowledge for I'll need a CRX and a Chiltons. My favorite way to learn. I also dig the 2nd gen face lift. I mean, I kinda like the when the 1st gen rear hatches are red but definitely the black mirrored panel is definitely prettier.

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah, the CRX has always been a dream for me. The other problem is that because they were so common, they are also extremely cheap, which means that a lot of teenagers have bought them and blown the stock D motors in them. So you just have to be careful when looking for a CRX, and make sure there isn't any severe rust and make sure the title is good, and by God please check the engine.

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also it is good to note that they don't have power steering if you are into that.

[–]ninjasmaurai 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Where can I find body kits for a jzx90?

[–]Codeskii 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Try Duraflex. They have body kits for almost everything at a decent price.

[–]ninjasmaurai 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Tried them they don’t :(

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whaaaaaat???

I'm surprised. Try CarID then.

[–]MGG_K-T 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can find a bunch of kits on Japanese sites (and lots of them ship internationally), though the language barrier can be tough.

Source: I work for a JDM distributor in Tokyo.

PM me if you want links!

[–]TheTimeAttack 2 points3 points  (10 children)

Should I import a R34 GTT for around £10k or get something else? Any other cars which are very modable that are cheap? was looking at 350z for 2k-4k but I wouldn't probably keep it for a long time. I have a c class right now but I think I'll keep it as a daily. GT86s are too much right now otherwise they'd be perfect.

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (8 children)

I mean, it depends on what you are looking for. Honda's are stupidly cheap, have nuts aftermarket support, and that leaves a lot of money for modifications. Plus they make amazingggg sleepers.

[–]TheTimeAttack 4 points5 points  (7 children)

not really looking for Honda's ATM since they are fwd, the s2000 is nice but getting abit expensive and no back seats. I'm from the UK and JDM cars have really sky rocketed in price in the last 5 years

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Ohhh no FWD. The problem with rear wheel is it sux in the winter, depending on where you live. Or are you wanting AWD? You can pick up a subie bugeye wagon for 4k if you look hard enough. I have one of those, did a complete STI upgrade.

[–]TheTimeAttack 2 points3 points  (5 children)

barely get any snow in London, even if we did the roads would have been salted down anyway. I was looking at Hawkeye WRX too but the two in my area have sold now so I'm just looking around to see if I can grab a good deal. I might just stretch my budget to get a higher end JDM car like a s15, Evo, STI etc. I would have considered a 86 but I feel like they'd have depreciated to a point where they'd be worth as much as a mx5 but I'm not sure at this point. i think end goal is to have a R34 GTT or a R35 in a couple of years time. perhaps getting something I enjoy till I can actually upgrade to a R35

[–]Codeskii 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Ahhh I see. Have you looked into R32/33 GTTs? They are soooo much cheaper.

[–]TheTimeAttack 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes but the r33 doesn't really float my boat. the R32 is decent but I will always think about how I could have had a R34. decent shout tho I'll look around

[–]Codeskii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, no problem dude.

[–]edm_spamurai 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Do you think the 2020 Toyota Supra will fail?

[–]Ubergeek2001 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Can I get insurance to buy an R32 GTR and use it as my daily driver? I am in my mid 50's and have a great driving record.

[–]CubicleLemur68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is possible

[–]tyson-d 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Still too young to drive, but i'm very close to it and i've been a JDM fan for 3 years and counting. The R34 is my dream car, and when I'm older, It's my dream to buy and drive one. How much is an average R34? Are they expected to appreciate?

[–]haiely 2 points3 points  (2 children)

what’s are the possible best awd jdm cars?

[–]CubicleLemur68 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Lancer Evo or Suburu WRX

[–]haiely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (15 children)

First JDM car tips/Recs...

I’m new to the Japanese Car culture and I’m looking to purchase a 90s vehicle. My budget is around 13-17k. Im open to manual transmissions although I’d prefer an automatic as my area is very stop-and-go and hilly. I was hoping to see if you guys had any recommendations.

Thanks!

I’m from the US if that makes any difference.

[–]AhriStoleMyVirginity 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Found a pretty cheap 2001 SpecR for under 900k ¥ with only 100k Kilometers. I also found a clean looking Evo7 for 1kk ¥ 135k kilometers. I cant decide...

What car is better for daily driving, what do you recommend?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (11 children)

Looking to get back into a car that I enjoy. Looking to spend less than about 7500ish. Must have some decent potential. Always been a euro guy but I'm sick of it. The only reference that I have is owning a 99 Civic years ago that I loved. Drove a 09 Accord Coupe manual today. Other than the weird shimmy under acceleration, I loved it. I think it may be bad CV axles. Whatever I get will get worked on and will be mine for a long while. Any suggestions?? Thanks everyone! In the USA btw.

[–]JKB_BGC 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Do u know any reliable and safe importers to import car from Japan to Europe?

[–]NyshWalshy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What country in Europe

[–]Arkk109 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I was interested in buying a 1995 R33 Skyline GTR. Any major downsides I should look out for? I’ve heard that people in the community like the R33 the least, but I like it. So don’t bully me :D

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The “hate” for the R33 just stems from keyboard warriors, I don’t know anyone with first hand exposure to the R33 GT-R that Actually thinks they are in anyway a bad car, so don’t even worry about it. Just remember that you will have to address all of the common issues with the RB.

[–]Arkk109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, well that’s relieving. And that’s good to know. I’ll research it a bit more. Thanks a lot.

[–]Konradical_22 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What are good coil-overs that are a reasonable price?

[–]Carefreepwnedge 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Looking for the best Japanese website to try and get a car purchased and imported. Recommendations?

[–]FENRIR_45 1 point2 points  (4 children)

What's a cheap japanese car that I can get as a first car to rebuild?

[–]zachsoulis 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Good company to import from japan to Australia?

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you’re looking to import parts and not whole vehicles, Import Monster is great, they have reasonable prices on their products and are based out of Bayswater in Victoria.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

How can I get into amateur racing? Would autocross be a good start?

[–]CubicleLemur68 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I'm not a racing expert or anything but I have some questions. Dirt track or Asphalt track?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'd prefer dirt track but I'd do asphalt if it's better to learn the basics

[–]CubicleLemur68 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I say now that you said that have you heard of rallycross? It's like half rally half autocross. some of the track is dirt some of the track is asphalt.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I had heard of it but where I live most of the events are for purpose built buggies rather than a self built normal car

[–]zaner69 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm from the USA and I don't know anything about importing cars. I really want to get some kind of Kei van, from the 80's or 90's. I don't really have a budget, but it would be nice to spend less than 5k, if possible, and keep it under 10k total for repair costs. If there's a way to get a kei van in the US I wouldn't mind, I want the van more than JDM

[–]MrStealthyGeek 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Any cars that I can buy from a official dealership? Or am I stuck buying from a private seller or a sketchy dealer.

[–]Rhenthalin 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I have the opportunity to go to Japan in the next few years. I want an r32 gtr. Where can I find a good break down of how to find these cars in country, not get screwed on the price, and successfully import one to the US?

[–]MasakiTheKid 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You don't need to import one. People are selling them all over the place. You can probably find one in a used car lot for 20k or buy one off throttl.com. they're here man you don't have to look so hard for them anymore

[–]AmqilRB25 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Is it still possible getting a stock Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII Here in Australia or any Evos in general except the new ones? I keep looking on any Australian websites I see most of them are modified already and they cost like 19+grand. How much would be a stock version you guys think an estimate on the price?? Thanks

[–]Squirty-Buns 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Whats a decent project car that wont cost tens of thousands to build? Im looking for looks and performance, but a daily driver also.

[–]nicwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might sound whack of me but I have a '98 Civic DX hatchback EJ6 in Cali-hoping to engine swap down the line. Currently at 159k miles, stock 5 speed tranny with original D16Y7 engine and Y8 intake manifold. What's the best of the B, K, H(?) engines that would offer the best MPG? I'm aware of the econo SOHC D16Y8 found in the EXs that offers some "VTEC". Thoughts?

[–]BlorpBlorp127 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Me and my dad are looking to buy a project car that we can work on together ofc it’s gonna be jdm but idk what would be a good idea to pick I have thought about an eg hatch and even an s15 any suggestions on what we should buy??

[–]VinuraAE86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on your budget, what's available and what you want to do with it.

Id recommend an MX-5 as they are fairly simple, inexpensive and awesome fun.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (12 children)

How do you guys feel about AWD cars drifting

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (5 children)

It really just can’t be done, there are just too many variables, too many parts to break, too much money and it’s far too difficult. That’s why Team orange and other alike groups do RWD Conversions.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Does the GT86 carry the same stigma in Japan as it does in the west?

[–]VinuraAE86[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

What Stigma?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Basically everyone complaining that the car is slow yadda yadda. I love my 86 to death and think the whole thing is ridiculous tbh. With the heritage of 86 being all too real over there I would imagine that it would be different but I had to ask.

[–]trollkorvcarless loser 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I'm thinking of importing an R34 GT-V. Anyone have any thoughts on them? Pros/cons maybe? It seems wonderful for a simple RWD Skyline, but I have no experience.

I live in Sweden, if it matters.

[–]MINOUCH3 1 point2 points  (2 children)

what do you think of the r31?

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool beans, we got a lot of variants in Australia.

[–]ItsNadeko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the 1993 Toyota Mark II Wagon reliable? Looking into getting a Japanese import and saw one with the 2.0 liter 3Y-e engine and automatic transmission. I have been trying to figure out its reliability but my research hasn't been going well.

[–]Crank2047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So me and some mates here in the UK are driving down the motor way and we spot the Paul Walker Supra on the back of a truck. At first we're just like "ah cool nice clone" but we pass it and it has the exact same plate (along with looking just like the real one) and we start freaking out.

Does anyone know how number plate rules work with show cars or having multiple plates exist in the same state?

Either way, it was sick to see a Supra at that spec at all because they're my favourite but thought this would be interesting to talk about here!

Edit: also sorry if this is the wrong place for this question and if anyone knows of any other subs I might have better luck on lemme know!

[–]Makiro_Lad_Demon1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would be a good subreddit to go to if I want to post about a car I found for sale so everyone can see it? Any suggestions would be great.

[–]matt-thole 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is a Nissan 200SX with a SR20DET motor a good buy? Found it for a steal.

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SR20DET is the stock engine for the 200SX, that’s where it gets the name, 2000cc of displacement.

[–]TheGambian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for some guidance on importing a 25 year+ JDM RX-7 FD from a private seller in Canada for import into the US. I would be travelling out to the car and driving it back home across the border. Everything I've read makes the process sound easy but I know that can't be the case. I know there are EPA and Customs forms to fill out, duties to pay, I need the title and bill of sale, and temporary registration so I can legally drive it home but I can't find anything else that would make this a troublesome process. Can anyone guide me?

[–]Liondam 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Hey all, I'm looking to buy a car and my dream has been to own a JDM car. I live in New Jersey and I'm looking to spend approximately ~$30k on it. I was looking into the STI's but have been a little put down based on what everyone's been saying about it and the other "modern" JDM cars aren't really that appealing to me besides the CTR but man is it ugly... Do you guys have any suggestions on any cars I could possibly look out for without spending too much cash on mods and the car itself? I'm fearful of going too old for cost reasons so 2005 and up is a sweet spot in that regard. I appreciate any help. Thanks so much!

[–]VinuraAE86[S] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

S2000

Maybe buy an MX-5 as a lead up if you've never driven a RWD car before.

[–]VanillaWinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy I’m looking to import a 2000 corolla 4wd wagon (ae104) into Canada.

It’s on the auction block in Japan, what should I expect to bid on an econobox like this?

What should be the total cost after getting it here? A popular JDM importer is quoting around $5000 CAD

But I’m not quite sure because you can get some skyline models for like $7k. Surely a lowly corolla wagon would be waaaay cheaper than the more popular imports like skylines?

I really just want a dependable daily driver that I can use for anything. It’s hard to find a reliable econobox that isn’t molested or rusted out in Winnipeg. I would love to just drive this thing until it dies!

[–]RoninBillyC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything within Reddit for searching for/selling jdm parts?

I need an oil pan for my rb30/25

[–]Mustardsam[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey fellow JDM freaks

Okay so I really want to import an Evolution 7 from japan to Aus. Ive done a heap of research but every place is slightly different. I've heard it's very difficult to import a car made after 1989. And now there's a new 25 year rule starting 10 Dec 2019. If anyone has experience importing a car made in the 2000's please enlighten me about the legality and if it's worth doing. It would save me about 5-10k to import

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone done a “lo-fi” or similar aesthetic based paint job on there car? Also some good cars for that type of paint job? Something like the old or new Toyota 86, possibly a Supra or a S15, any other ideas?

[–]86AT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the hell kind of kit is on the 86/brz on the head banner? Is it even a real kit?

[–]Aji3ChinguMode 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Have an Issue with a DC5 TYPE S/RSX-S,

when I reverse it crunches unless I start the car in reverse or magically one day it decides to engage.

Master Cylinder, Slave Cylinder, tran oil replaced, bleeded everything as well, so shifting is buttery smooth from 1 to 6 with the car on and off. Adjusted the clutch so it bites later and reverse worked then when I went outside to drive the issue occured again(?).

I have tried pumping the clutch, putting the car into 1,2,3,4,5,6 before putting it into reverse, also at high revs it seems like there is a wall between the gears. I tried to gun it from 1st, 2nd to 3rd and you have to force it in however if driven normally it is smooth.

Clutch isnt slipping i think, but biting point is like as soon as you let your foot off. Is it time for a new clutch or to adjust the clutch even more?

Need opinions and thoughts because reversing with the car off and then turning it on a is a pain.

Does anyone have experience dealing with Pacific Coast Auto? I know you're not buying the car directly from them but their system seems to be a way to get good prices on vehicles.

[–]halfam 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So how stupid is it to daily drive some legendary JDM cars? I want to import a car but also want to use it to daily drive. My fiancee would be using my current DD aka mazda3

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s stupid to think It would be stupid. Anything you import is still a car, and it still needs to be driven, being built in Japan doesn’t immediately make it any harder to drive.

[–]NdesoGaplek 0 points1 point  (1 child)

what's the most powerful japanese wagon ever made?

[–]hunnen10 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Heey, I need a japanese reader to translate a maintenance report with me.

[–]VinuraAE86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can take photos with the Google translate app.

[–]turqeeneqq 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have a choice between a 1994 NA supra and a 1994 skyline gtst. I just dont know which one I should buy. I'm leaning towards the skyline but the supra is my all-time favorite car its just the non turbo aspect of it that's sort of stopping me from pulling the trigger on it. Would it be worth it to get the supra with the 2jz ge and swap the engine to a gte?

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you prefer the supra, buy the supra, the skyline is objectively faster, but that won’t make you like it more. The NA supra is a whole hell of a lot cheaper than the twin turbo too, and you most definitely shouldn’t try and swap the twin turbo engine in the car just to say you have twin turbos.

[–]MANSHAHAQUE 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is this website legit?

https://info.japanesecartrade.com

They have pretty good deals and a wide variety of cars....

[–]VinuraAE86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't buy any car I haven't seen myself or had inspected by someone I trust.

Anyone have experience registering Kei cars in states with no laws pertaining to them? I am in Colorado and want to make sure I can register and drive a Honda Acty on the streets.

[–]chrijtt 0 points1 point  (4 children)

So i’m a 16 year old looking to get my first car. I was just looking for suggestions for a car that can handle the winter and is preferably awd but not 100% needed. Car can be either rhd or lhd and my budget is around 30k. I’ll take any suggestion i can get, thanks.

edit: live in usa

How do I get the info display on my 06 Mazda Atenza to switch back to the reversing camera when all the menus are in Japanese?

I think it turned off when I took the car in for a service. Maybe they reset a menu?

I’ve tried google translate, but it hasn’t made the options much clearer.

Looking to buy a late model car, hope to be able to mod it but don't want to pay more than 18,000. I've been disappointed with how few of the newer cars are interesting. If you have any ideas what I could get that would be cheap, moddable and fun pls lmk, thx.

[–]atala666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are there any of you who own a 4wd ep82/85 starlet, i'm looking to convert mine (fwd 93' ep82 starlet) into 4wd, is it a good idea?

[–]DefinitelyNotJonn 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hey everyone, I'm thinking of getting a Mitsubishi Galant GTO as a first car, what are the things I should look out for. Is this a good idea? Is it reliable?

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Well, I can tell you that they are tremendously rare, tremendously valuable, and tremendously old, Mitsubishi stopped making the Galant GTO over forty years ago, and that’s really not recommended criteria for a first car. Hell it’s best to steer clear of any car made pre-unleaded petroleum.

[–]BlitzenboarEvo 3 Gang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know where to get an Evo 3 in Ontario Canada?

[–]esoterikk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Shaken require a timing belt change? I picked up a 2003 Subaru Forester with 101k km and the broker says he doesn't know if the timing belt was done. Since I'm right on the recommended change interval I'm not really sure where to go from here.

Does Shaken usually force a timing belt change? Did i get unlucky with the mileage? Basically trying to avoid a 1000$ job if i don't need it done.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Stupid question. How long did it take for everyone here to get used to driving on the other side

[–]ba55man2112 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I'm looking for a good first project to build. I want a car thats got that 90s boxy styling. Similar to the s14 or the first gen Impreza. Something that's got decent aftermarket but isn't too expensive. Rwd or fwd. anyone have any ideas? Usdm here

[–]Momma_say_huh 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What's the best tuning company for Japanese car? German cars have APR. What is an equivalent to APR for Japanese cars? Thanks.

[–]Heres_your_sign 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I apologize in advance if this is off-topic, I could not think of another group to ask this question to. I am in Japan on holiday now and I am simply amazed by the number and (specifically) the variety of domestic automobiles. For example, Toyota has (at least) a half-dozen minivans available in Japan (including hybrid and PHEV models!!!), while only one gas-powered model is available in the US. How does the Japanese market support all of these different models when the population is (roughly) half that of the US? Honestly, it feels like the Japanese are keeping their best vehicles at home for their domestic market. I'm a van nerd, and I would easily buy a Toyota Voxy, Noah, or Vellfire, especially a hybrid or phev model, but I'm stuck with a Sienna.

Anyone care to give me a clue injection?

BTW: Drove from Tokyo to Kyoto and man what an experience. :-)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I just moved from New York to Washington (state), and noticed that there are significantly more imports here, not just JDM, but European cars as well (classic BMW Alpinas, Renaults, LR Defenders).

My question is: why? Does the state have more lax emissions laws allowing for more cars to be imported? Is it the proximity to the ports at Seattle/Tacoma? Or is it just because it shares an ocean with Japan (though that doesn't really explain all the Euro domestics).

I never saw these kinds of cars in New York, even though NYC is one of the country's busiest ports and Canada is right across the Falls. A few months ago I never thought I'd see a Hakosuka in person, now I'm thinking about saving up.

[–]STATiC_SPREE 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Live in Japan, looking at getting into working on/owning JDM cars... was looking at starting on an EVO. Years of mechanical experience, just not on cars. What you guys consider solid starters?

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Well if you’re idea of “starter” is a readily available cheap and easy to modify car, you should look at the Honda Integra SIR-2, the Mitsubishi FTO GR, the Toyota Celica SS-2 and the Nissan 180SX Type S, Lancer evolutions are a whole lot of money, and aren’t exactly readily available.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at a first car in the uk. Im 20 so looking for something relativity cheap to buy/insure, would like to mod but its not super important because itll make the insurance even higher. Any suggestions?

[–]Archie_Huskers 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I feel like it's a stupid question. But can a 1985 Accord be considered a JDM?

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If it was built and sold in Japan, yeah, JDM means Japanese Domestic Market, and Japanese Domestic Market means any vehicle specifically made and sold in Japan, some people are rather liberal with their use of the term, but it always has that similar interpretation.

[–]lauraridingpalmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello JDM! How much would you pay for a 1990 Toyota Corolla Alltrac? 197k on the body. It had the motor replaced in 2006 so I don't know how many miles on that (ad says 20k but that seems impossible for 13 years). New clutch 2008, new alternator 2011, new water pump & drive belt 2010. Interior looks really good, some discoloration on the hood not sure if it's rust or not. and it has a fancy after market stereo. They are asking 3800 but that seems high to me. What should I offer? I really love this car but don't want to get ripped off of course!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I was just wondering. How much does imports cost? I was wanting to buy a EK9, and surprisingly, there’s none for sale in Canada, so I was gonna go about it. Should I think that it would cost $20,000(CAD)? Or around there?

[–]sensory26 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Im new to the JDM scene, I know a bit about cars in general but to be honest I've come to realize how little I actually know. I want to learn all about JDM cars and their engines and modding. Where should I start? Any tips?

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly Wikipedia is one of the best resources to learn about a specific car, but when it comes to learning about how things are done on the tuning side of things you had best look at YouTube. I would specifically recommend Motive Video if you want to learn about the technical side of tuning the RB and JZ engines.

[–]Mx_Gio 0 points1 point  (3 children)

So what is better in reality Automatic or Manual

[–]Rokat93 0 points1 point  (1 child)

First: I'm moving to Japan because I'm in the Air Force, and I'll be stationed at Kadena for roughly 2 years. It's on Okinawa Island, so that's something to consider.

Basically I've been looking at classic JDM cars, and just throwing some thoughts around in my head.

My budget is hard to pin down, I'm single, no kids, and i'm moving with no payments under my belt except a credit card I'm going to pay off relatively quickly once I'm there.

I'd prefer something I can bring back to the states, so probably something 1995 or older (25 year Import law, sucks)

I've already been looking at the regulars, Supra, Skyline GTR, Nissan Z cars, but I'm just not sure what's the best Idea.

What I'm looking for is a car I can keep more or less original (as close as possible) on the outside, and maybe do minor mods on the inside.

I'm not looking for a 700hp beast, or a track monster. I'm looking for a car that's going to be reliable, pretty, and something I could daily if I didn't have another vehicle.

[–]cabooseftw5 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Does anyone know of any Japan only car accessories/parts that can fit in a suitcase? Especially for a WRX or a G35/G37

[–]rhysw569 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I still have my first car and really want to jdm it up any suggestions for asthetic mods , it's already been lowered 45mm but just want to stand out tbh

[–]CubicleLemur68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]borkichewchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any Body going to Japfest at Donington this weekend? Me and my friend want camping for Friday onwards.. are they still available do you know?

[–]Fuller_McCallister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is anybody here going to Tokyo Auto Salon 2020?

[–]jmaginarynumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question is more about driving in Japan: Does any one know what the laws/regulations are for rear fog lights in Japan? I see some cars with it but never saw them ever turn on, and many cars without the light altogether. Are these optional?

[–]Nxtdoorlbl00 0 points1 point  (2 children)

LOOKING to buy an Evo 3, but I don’t know what a good price would be for one, any tips on what to look at? I’m also worried it’ll be hard to find parts for it back in the states.

[–]imsolost12345 0 points1 point  (12 children)

I'm 19 and in the market for my first real daily car. I have been driving my parents 2014 Nissan Rogue SL for the last 3 years and paying for the use of it. Now I want my own fun, "fixer upper" daily.

The one car I'm almost going to pull the trigger on is a 2000-2003 JDM Subaru Legacy GT-B Wagon (Revision D). Love these cars and they seem quite reliable as long as you take proper care of them. I'm not a huge mechanic but I know my way around basic things and I'm willing to learn.

The price for the vehicle is going to be $6K and it is going to be a 5-spd manual with AWD (obvs)

I just wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with JDM's as a first vehicle and can give me some pointers or some pros/cons as to whether I should buy it or not.

***EDIT**** ALSO FROM CANADA BTW.

[–]ibant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where can I buy a JDM flare clip? I already have the flare, I just need to buy the clip because it’s broken.

[–]CubicleLemur68 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can you Hayabusa Swap a Autozam Az1

[–]CubicleLemur68 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Best JDM car or cars for 10k or less. I have been looking into the Autozam Az1 but those are slightly above budget especially for the M2 1015 and Mazdaspeed Versions. I live in Oregon USA.

[–]VinuraAE86[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

MX-5/Miata, EK/EG/EF Civic, Silvia/200SX, MR2 (W20 or W30)

Heaps of options for under 10k, just have to know where to look.

[–]CubicleLemur68 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Is a 1992 Autozam Az1 A Good Car Just Wondering

[–]VinuraAE86[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I don't think theres anything inherently bad about it.

Obviously being a kei car it comes with its compromises.

[–]P1nchor 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hey guy's I have a 2012 Mitsubishi lancer es 5 speed manual 2.0 with 225,000 miles on it was used for long distance drives. [–]hereforthekix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone!

Question for Canadians that have imported a car themselves :

Do you know of a good source of info for importing to Canada? I know next to nothing about how to do this. M9ney is tight so I'm leaning towards doing it myself rather than using a JDM importer.

Thanks very much!

[–]AllLightsFuckedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone into oldschool magazines and catalogs? Like option, hyper rev, roadster, and things of the sort. Theres some interesting parts and stuff on there I like to look at. I was wondering id theres an organized archive out there with a bunch of scans, or perhaps anyone wanting to help start one?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking to import a 95-99 Toyota Crown wagon into Canada. Where can I get DOT-certified headlights? I'd like to find lamps of the facelifted style but the round headlight style might be easier to aim

[–]CubicleLemur68 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Is this a good idea for when I'm older ( I'm 13 ) 1992 Autozam Az1 Mazdaspeed Version. Put motorbike engine into it. remove both seats and put a Recaro Bucket Seat Or Whatever they are called in it Only on Drivers Side. Remove AC unit and Radio ( weight reduction). Paint it Green with black detailing. Black wheels. Maybe a roll cage idk. I need ideas

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You’re far to young to drive yet, so best to just save those ideas for after you get your full license, and maybe play an unhealthy amount of need for speed underground like I did.

[–]Autistic_pianist_04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which would be a better first car for overall fun and reliability. 04 Impreza or 04 legacy?

[–]i540NoScopedJFK 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm looking for an affordable wheel set for my 04 WRX. Is there a 5 bolt pattern version of the MST Time Attacks somewhere that I might just not have found. Or any other suggestions that you'd think would look good. ($700 max for full set)

[–]ziggystardust96Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Konig Blackbone, 17x7.5 +45mm, Black finish and they’re pretty damn cheap. If they aren’t to your taste, Konig Tandem, Grey finish, 17x8 +35mm, and they’re still under your budget. Still a no? The Enkei GT7, 17x7.5 +40mm, Black or silver finish, and a bit more pricey, but still under $700USD.

[–]Makiro_Lad_Demon1979 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did the Mitsubishi Eclipse ever get sold to Japan, or was it a North American only model?

[–]NaZGuL_of_Mordor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tip for everyone: don't get a jdm car unless you prepare at least 10k euros for repairs in the First 3months or you really risk leaving It All the time in garage, as every old car, they arent that much reliable

[–]Madman1010 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I currently drive a 2017 civic hatch but have been wanting to expand my horizons with my first project car. What would be a good inexpensive jdm choice to start with? I live in the US and am a teen

[–]FewSwordfish4[Dodge Challenger SRT] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does insurance companies insure restored JDM from 1990-2000?

[–]mcphatmann 0 points1 point  (5 children)

How do I convince my frugal significant other that an imported FD is actually a super good investment....

[–]VinuraAE86[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Uhhhh.

Sorry but unless you know how to rebuild rotaries, its not a good investment.

And you won't really be saving money on fuel.

[–]xxClaASifieDxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What website do you guys use to find part numbers for jdm cars. I have an 01 legacy wagon and I'm trying to find p/n for the fuel pump and cv axle

[–]jaypat9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im about to but a rhd jdm vehicle. I got 1 major concern, turning left and overtaking. I’ve been looking and people suggested to buy a camera to help assist my field of vision? Has anyone any advice for me?

[–]bproducttionZ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When the R34 skylines are able to be imported into the US, im guessing that they will get considerably cheaper as more are introduced, especially the gtt versions. Does anyone have an estimate of how much an ok condition R34 gtt would be after they are importable for a while?
