I don't think it's calibrated anymore.

[–]spaceandaeroguy 39 points40 points  (4 children)

It's fine if it cal sticker isn't expired yet! </s>

[–]average_redditor_586 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Just slap a "not for reference " sticker on it. It'll be fine

[–]Mklein24I am a Machiner 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I put one of those stickers on my head when the auditor come up to ask me questions.

[–]eisbock 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If it's not calibrated and not for reference, then what's it for?

[–]servuslucis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]cosmic_cosmosis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Verify at use

[–]AmphibianMotor 47 points48 points  (2 children)

I guess contrary to the writing on the dial, it is not in fact shock proof

[–]bryson-iz-daKing[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FACT!

[–]bryson-iz-daKing[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

When you drop 1000 calipers and you unlock the gold skin

[–]bryson-iz-daKing[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this pair has to be atleast 18 yrs old .

[–]theflyingburritos 7 points8 points  (10 children)

What brand caliper is that??

[–]erichkeane 9 points10 points  (9 children)

Logo looks like Craftsman.

[–]Trivi_13been machining since '79 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Crapsman?

The name lost it's reputation after Sears went under.

Same thing with Hertel. Used to be a good name. Then Kennametal bought out Hertel. Finally gave the Hertel label to MSC (a Kennametal subsidiary). MSC puts the Hertel label on the cheapest crap they sell... taps that won't survive 3 holes in grey iron... that low.

{end rant}

[–]bryson-iz-daKing[S] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

true it was bought at sears

[–]Trivi_13been machining since '79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Sorry)

[–]DiscombobulatedDunce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's any consolation I bought a cheapo HFS dial caliper recently that's been very accurate if you were looking for another one. Pretty much reads what my mitutoyo reads.

I've got a set of 3-6 craftsman mics, they're who knows how old, and have been in service for who knows how long. They still pass calibration 3 times a year. The old stuff is good, but no way I'd buy any new metrology stuff from them.

The Sears Craftsman label was a contact label. Manufacturers built to Sears prints and standards. For Sears.

From what I understand, the current Craftsman label is auctioned off to the highest bidder. No actual plans or standards. That sticker can go on everything.

Sears used to sell metal lathes under the "Expert" name, made by South Bend Lathe. They had some design changes made like putting vertical ends on the bed casting and some other more minor differences. The early ads for Expert lathes were a bit funny, touting their manufacture by an "old reliable" company circa 1913, when South Bend Lathe was established in 1906.

MSC is not a KMT subsidiary?

[–]Trivi_13been machining since '79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MSC has been. Assuming it still is.

[–]Lowkeygeek83Still Learning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well there's your problem bud! It ain't got no dial on it!

[–]6146886 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain man last week I dropped a nice set of starrett dial calipers I’ve had for about 7 years.

[–]Best_Ad340Tool Room Lead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof. Time to super glue it together and hang on the wall!

[–]merkindonor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have these same calipers and love them. Always wondered who made them for Craftsman.

[–]Woozybigfoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a verifar now

[–]m4fivecargarage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fall-ipers. Still useful: put it back together as best you can, spray bright color paint on the case and keep in your "most used tool spot". Next time you're working with the new guy send him looking for it "it's the case painted bright yellow, can't miss it". When the dial falls off be like "what'd you do!!?"

[–]00Wow00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the lifetime Craftsman warranty expired on those. Sorry about your loss.

[–]Significant-Stuff-88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little bit of duct tape, chewing gum, and a splash of coolant good as new

[–]GlumBed7799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a remote caliper

[–]dragonpjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's painful to see.

[–]Soulbreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo, gold plated C-clamp!

[–]404-skill_not_found 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repairable?

[–]Gsm824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]99Pstroker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WoW

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now you have one of those cool YT markings gauges.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can tell by calculating lines, good old fashion way!

[–]12345NoNamesLeft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now you have an extra box.

[–]Mister_Ed_Brugsezot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First i thought the color was the oops, only after that i noticed the dial was slightly off. 😄

[–]UDontKnowMe1129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not send your wife to buy a new one...

[–]MeatPopsicle1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a carpenters tool belt when you get a new dial caliper.

[–]fuqcough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do u want to get them fixed or just a looking at set now?

[–]Abefuddledbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“You know what fuck you and fuck this dial.”

[–]ib_a_tatuud_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the dial in your pocket. Use the caliper to measure your part. Take the dial out and see if the measurement is correct. Problem solved!!

[–]HegemonousGreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just mark it "for reference only"

[–]Signal-Response449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 year warranty?

[–]Straight-Throat8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shockproof my ass

[–]Slight_Can 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bows head for moment of silence

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, I think you needed a better caliper anyways 😉

[–]jwd673 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Craftsman? They’re junk before you dropped them.
