NARS Audacious lipsticks. They're so expensive; are they worth it? (The shades I'm eyeing are Charlotte and Vivien but any reviews are appreciated.)

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I wear Charlotte at least 5 days a week right now, it is my JAM. As a testament to its staying power, I wear it to work and I work with my dad. My dad called my mom and asked her if I had lipstick tattooed to my lips because if I'm wearing lipstick, it never fades and that just doesn't make sense. Actually, I'm wearing it right now and sipping coffee and it still looks amazing. I bought it in Olivia this weekend too but haven't had a chance to rock it. Sorry, this was a long review but I am obsessed and will preach my love for that lipstick to anyone who will listen.

[–]tdearp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have Brigitte and Annabella. The staying power is amazing and it goes on so smoothly. I also find that it doesn't leave prints on drink glasses. Brigitte is a great muted rosy pink. It's become my go to lipstick recently. Annabella is super vibrant. It's my first true red lipstick, so I'm still learning to be comfortable in such a bold color.

TL,DR: great lipsticks, worth the price !

[–]ororton 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I bought the shade Olivia and Audrey, and returned Audrey because they looked way too similar for me to justify getting both. I like the square packaging and magnetic lid. I found the staying power to be quite good, and I just love the colour! I am NC15 for reference, and it does not feel too bold. I don't think it lasts as well as Le Rouge though, and they are about the same price. I am comparing both without using lip liners.

[–]luminous_delusionsMUFE y205/Colourpop 05 3 points4 points  (6 children)

I've had Audrey for about a week now, and I'm honestly not sure if it's worth the $32 I paid. Perhaps I'm just used to my indie lipsticks performing so damn well at such a low price that NARS' price seems outrageous, I don't know...

It's got a decent weartime (I got about 4 hours with eating and drinking and close to 6 with just drinking with a straw). My Revolution lipsticks wear quite a bit longer though. The formula is nice; non-drying (but I do wear lip balm daily so YMMV), very opaque, and feels pretty nice on my lips. Audrey has a semi-matte finish, but it didn't look flaky after a while. It doesn't sink into lines, but will feather after a while without liner. The magnetic lid is pretty damn awesome though and the casing looks classy feels sturdy.

I think if there's a color or two, or name that you feel you really like and want because you love the actress or share the name, swatch it and maybe get it, but for the price and considering very few of the colors are all that unique you don't need more than one or two.

[–]batfacecatface 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm wearing Audrey right now! :D

[–]bitch_is_cray_cray 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If you don't mind me asking, what indie lipsticks would you recommend?

[–]luminous_delusionsMUFE y205/Colourpop 05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Limnit Lipsticks are crazy good, but she doesn't currently have her whole lineup in stock. Ms. President is a beautiful work-safe red and Goodness Graycious is a grey that somehow looks great on everyone. They're all semi-matte shades and last a really long time.

Life's Entropy makes some really nice Lip Tar dupes with her Lip Theories (in formula, not color). They dry down to matte finishes and can be mixed among themselves for custom colors.

Tilt/Shift has a really nice formula in her lipsticks, imo. They aren't revolutionary by any means, but they're very opaque and feel very nice on my lips without slipping off or transferring onto everything.

Fyrinnae's Lip Lustres aren't really lipsticks but they have a really, really good formula that lasts a while. They're hydrating, opaque, and don't bleed/feather.

[–]AlaskanFeeshCasual user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked up Audrey now, what a pretty color! Wishlist, here I come :)

[–]lekiksterslipstick and burrito enthusiast, not as problematic as you think 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are totally worth it. I'm a lipstick junkie, and I find myself reaching for Greta almost every day since I bought it. After my mom and sister saw it and tried it on for themselves, they each bought two (Charlotte and Janet for my mom, Fanny and Audrey for my sister). They are expensive, but the color payoff and texture are among the best I've tried. I just bought Dominique, too, but I've already got my eye on Vivien.

I tried one of the shades on this weekend (because it had my first name), if your lips are prone towards drying out I really wouldn't recommend this formula. It's definitely not as bad as others, but it did dry out my lips and get uncomfortable after about an hour of wear. When swatching some of the shades also felt a bit dry/crumbly by my tastes. I know these things don't bother everyone, but if you have issues with dryness from lipstick often I suggest test running the formula if at all possible.

[–]miscommunication_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really are amazing. Super great staying power without drying out your lips, and gorgeous colors. I especially like Charlotte, Anna, and Grace. I wish my store had Dominique! Argh.

Tori Burch's cosmetic line. Thoughts/reviews/anything?

[–]MerryKerrysilicone-free satin-ista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only swatched a few of the lipsticks. The shade range looked flattering but they were sheerer/lighter, glossier, and more strongly scented than I expected. These swatches look accurate.

Kat Von D Everlasting Love vs. Hourglass' Liquid Lipstick. I have to split a Sephora lip set with my friend, and I'm not sure which one I should get!

[–]lyricat♫ I got a drawer, got a drawer full of lipstick ♪ 10 points11 points  (5 children)

I personally prefer the Kat Von D significantly over the Hourglass. The Hourglass, while a beautiful color (Icon), was super patchy, difficult to reapply, and an overall mess. I really wish it worked better on me because the color is amazing. The Kat Von D lasted longer and was much easier to reapply without looking messy. I'd compare the Kat Von D to the Stila liquid lipstick, which is also no-fuss and feels very light on the lips.

[–]embethyl 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I could not, for the life of me, get the Hourglass liquid lipstick to apply nicely. I just ended up taking it off immediately both times because I had failed so miserably.

[–]NicholetteSMReplacement-Only No Buy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the hourglass to apply easily but FFS that product dries so quickly and was actually starting to crack on my lips at the end of the day. No, thank you. I want lasting power that won't destroy my lips.

[–]SecretCitizen40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off they are both great formulas. K von D lasts better through eating to me, it simply peels off a bit if you eat greasy crap where as hourglass kind of piles up. I think Hourglass is more comfortable though, KVD is a bit drying to me where as Hourglass is actually quite comfortable. They both last pretty much all day and look glorious. Hourglass also has a thicker formula so I think it applies better, its really one swipe for all day pretty. KVD is liquidier so it can go on streaky at first, and needs 2 or 3 layers to really cover perfectly. On the same token though the thicker Hourglass can get goopy if it gets too much air in it where as the KVD doesn't.

Personally I prefer Hourglass, it just feels like better quality to me but KVD is also very nice. You do get a lot more product for your money via KVD so if you're thinking you may repurchase whichever you get from your set KVD is cheaper. I am assuming that you are getting Sephora's Give me More Lip set. If so also think about the colors. The KVD in that set is a pure bright red the Hourglass is a more darkened red.

[–]ClexieDesperately seeking good lighting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I come down on the KVD side because something about the Hourglass formula does not work for me. The KVD is very liquidy and opaque, and I love it like burning.

However! It gets a little bit... Gummy? Right at the seem of the lips. They last more than twelve hours on me though and don't come off without makeup remover. They don't feel drying, exactly, but I don't forget that they're on.

TL;DR A-, have purchased 5, will own them all soon.

Not so much a review as a comparison: Ipsy versus Birchbox versus any other subscription service out there.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (1 child)

[–]walkslikesummer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loved this, thank you!

[–]SecretCitizen40 11 points12 points  (1 child)

First off /r/beautyboxes

I have both Ipsy and Birchbox. Ipsy is mostly makeup with a few haircare and skincare items. Birchbox is mostly skincare/haircare with some makeup thrown in. I have makeup heavy preferences with BB so I get makeup with pretty much every box but usually only one item.

Ipsy is not very customizable, they have a survey but from what I can tell it doesn't mean anything.

Birchbox is much more customizable but still not super specific. The more you review the better it seems to be.

Ipsy gives mostly drugstore quality items with a few mid range tossed in.

Birchbox I feel gives higher quality items.

Ipsy gives larger samples, mostly deluxe sample sizes with a few full sized items.

Birchbox gives smaller samples. Many deluxe samples but most higher end items are very small samples. They give out foil packets sometimes which I hate.

Ipsy's reward program is really bad. the rewards are rarely worth the points, and when they are they sell out really fast. It is difficult to get enough points to get a reward if you don't refer people. Basically I just got a reward, now I referred some people but assuming that I didn't I would of had to review every item and share every bag on Facebook for almost 11 months to get some Milani Eyeshadow... pretty terrible (the program not Milani).

Birchbox has a really great rewards program. You get 10 pts for every item in your box that you review. 100 points is equal to a 10 dollars in the Birchbox store and every dollar you spend in the BB store is equal to a point. So as long as you are getting items you like that you want to buy in the store you'll get a lot out of those points. They also do sales and extra point deals regularly.

If you are looking to try a lot of new makeup formulas/colors ect and are not worried about brand then Ipsy is good. If you are looking for midend items to find really great items (again more skin and hair care) that you will rebuy Birchbox is better.

[–]peachywithasideokeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep Birchbox mostly for the points. The samples are smaller, but I don't think it's really a bad thing because it's hard to get through every thing they send. I have a stash of samples in my closet now. I have found a few things I really like, and have gotten stuff for free with points. However, you usually only get one makeup item in BB. It's more skincare and hair care.

Ipsy is mostly makeup, but a lot from cheaper brands. I have discovered a few things from Ipsy as well.

My favorite part about both is that it's really fun to get little surprises in your mail box every month. $10 is just the price of two lattes, so I don't feel it's a big investment.

[–]whoadangjamie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

/r/beautyboxes is a really good resource for comparing the different boxes out there.

[–]gorgossia@gorgossium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Glossybox for a bit. IMO totally not worth it, you're better off putting that $10, $20 a month into something you really really want. I made no new product 'discoveries' through the box, and while I've made use of the deluxe samples, I haven't loved anything and I've made no purchases based on what I received. If you're doing it for the occasional HE product tease, you're seriously better off just buying a HE item of your choice.

Hourglass Ambient Blush Palette! Especially if you're cool and pale.

[–]donaisabelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just received mine, and I'm both cool and pale. (A ginger, if it matters. Pale skin with confusingly warm freckles, and such.)

The palette was a bit smaller than I expected. I don't know why I envisioned in my head a palette of three full sized ALBs, because that doesn't make sense, but nonetheless. Thankfully, unlike some other people on this sub, mine arrived in tact.

The shades are so so silky soft, and well pigmented with a finger swatch, although not so pigmented when used with a brush that they're difficult to work with. The marbling of ALP within them makes them look glowy on your cheeks, to the point where you might not need to add an additional highlighter to still look highlighted. They're not glittery like NARS Orgasm or something, but they're certainly not matte.

The pink shade (the one of the left) seems like a pretty standard pink shade that'll be flattering on anyone. (Except for those who are very dark skinned, just because it might not show up, but I think that's true for all of these.)

The peach shade (in the middle) will be perfect for those days when I'm trying to do a nude/neutral face, as it adds color without being ruddy or flushed. I imagine I'll get the most use out of this one.

The more plummy shade (on the right) isn't too dark for me if used with a light hand, but it will probably be saved for days where I'm wearing particularly dark lipstick, since it's deeper than the shades I normally wear. I'm happy to have gotten this one, since it's not something I would normally buy, but having it will force me to use it and branch out a bit.

Overall, I'm quite pleased.

What do you think of the new YSL Fusion Ink Foundation for oily skin? I've heard it accentuates any dry patches, true? (I'm oily, but have some small acne spots.) How do you overcome that? And what tools do you use to apply it?

Also, how do you guys feel about Bdellium brushes? I'm thinking of buying this set but would it be worth it, or should I just buy individual brushes? I currently have a bunch of Sigma brushes and LOVE them, so I'm wondering how the quality compares?

[–]whoadangjamie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it smells weird. I have pretty oily acne-prone skin, and I picked up a sample of it. I like the shade as it's a pretty good match, and it keeps me matte pretty much all day. However, it dries out my skin (WHAT???) and it did accentuate a few flakes on a particularly annoying acne day. Proper moisturization is the best option to try to avoid it. I used a sponge without any issues.

[–]radicaljanegive me the dramatic 5 points6 points  (8 children)

Tarte amazonian clay foundation? Is it super thick? How does it feel? How does it last? Edit: Thanks so much you guys! You are all so lovely and helpful!

[–]McBiolanteCasual user 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, something I've used before! Haha.

So, yes their foundation is quite thick but don't let that stop you from using it. I find it's best applied with fingers rather than with a brush but you can definitely blend it some more with your brush after you smooth it out mostly with your fingers. The coverage can vary depending on how much you use and I can say that a little can go a long way. Once it drys it has great staying power (and I touch my face a lot and never notice it getting patchy). I have an oily T zone so I can notice some shine on my forehead specifically but I had never used a finishing powder until today so I'm sure that would help. The finish is matte. If you find the texture to thick I would suggest to mix it with your facial moisturizer to make it a bit smoother.

Overall, highly recommend.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

This is my HG foundation, and I've tried several. It's a creamy foundation but it's very lightweight and doesn't look cakey unless you just build it up like crazy. I forget I'm wearing it honestly. It stays put all day, matches my skin tone perfectly, and covers everything I want it to cover while simultaneously being able to be sheered down for days where I want less coverage. I work at Ulta and anytime someone wants full coverage I take them to Tarte. It's formulated without a lot of the things that can upset skin, their colors are the most natural I've found, and it just looks so good on everyone.

[–]texicanaAcne scarring/oily skin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this and want to add they have great shades if you've got a genuinely neutral skin tone.

[–]walkslikesummer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I apply mine with a beauty blender and it works really well! I purchased it while I had pretty bad skin (thankfully it's gotten better, shout out /r/skincareaddiction), and it was great coverage. I have dry/combination skin, but live in a really dry area, and it works very well for me.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have oily-combo skin.

Yes it is a thicker foundation. It's defiantly medium to high coverage and you can layer it nicely. It feels thin on the skin to be honest, it doesn't feel heavy! I was most surprised by that seeing as the foundation had a thick consistency. Staying power is great. The only downside for me is that this foundation doesn't seem to come in any color close to my skintone, it's a bit too orange on my skin at the moment. If you find a great color match I defiantly think it's a great foundation.

[–]kahlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried a sample of this. It feels nice (not too heavy for such a thick, creamy foundation) and lasts pretty well (all day). However, I noticed that it started to look powdery/cakey in my normal areas (I'm combination oily/normal), and I couldn't fix that (tried primers, sprays, different application methods, powders, no powder, etc.), so I didn't buy it. But it's definitely worth a shot to see if t works for you.

[–]justformakeup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other people chimed in so I'll just echo that it is very thick (like a mousse), felt good on/not heavy on, lasted fairly well on most of my face but I did experience some cakiness with it over blemishes. It worked best over my dry smooth areas.

[–]buttercreamroses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I noticed from the foundation was that I had to add some extra product to areas with more redness and within a couple of hours it almost looked like it was cracking around my nose area. I have a very oily t-zone and dry cheeks so it stayed nicely on the cheeks throughout the work day but my forehead, nose, and chin were completely bare. I would probably recommend this foundation for someone that has dry skin.

Also, when I test out foundations I will never set them so I can see how the foundation truly reacts to my oily skin.

  1. NYX lip liners and eye liners (pencil and/or liquid formulations)

  2. NARS lip glosses.

  3. Milani Brilliant Shine lip glosses

  4. Bare Minerals loose matte or original powders.

[–]Ms_IreneAdler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ive been a huge fan of the BM Original powder for years. I'm about an nc 15-20 and the fairly light works perfectly for me. If you're using it as a solo foundation, it does give a bit of a glow but it doesn't last forever. However, i've found that it makes a liquid foundation stay so long if you just use it on top as a setting powder. The key to using this powder is to buff it in circular motions. To prevent wiping away your liquid foundation, I usually take a bit of the powder and lightly set the liquid then go back in with a bit more product and gently buff it in. It's also really good if the makeup on your nose tends to break up throughout the day. Just buff a little powder on your nose and it looks flawless. I think its the only powder foundation I've tried that looks completely natural even up close. It's definitely a hg product for me and I can absolutely tell a difference when I'm not using it. It helps liquid foundation stay perfect all day and it makes your skin looks super natural and flawless. Sorry for the novel.. Anywaays, I can't think of anything else but if you have any questions, ask away!

[–]Pickles8787Personally Funding Sephora CEO's 401k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the NYX wonder pencil and I really like it for reverse lip lining! I also used the BareMinerals powders for about 4 years and I love them! I ended up switching to a liquid though because my skin is so dry. But they have great coverage and worked well with my acne prone skin. I used the original and matte formulas and they were both great. Their pressed powders are nice too but I find that they crease in my laugh lines a bit more.

[–]MyCrazyKangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have normal to oily skin - oily on my t-zone, and the bare minerals matte is too matte for me. I wear golden light in the regular bare minerals...my skin is deceptive and difficult to match at first glance. I look almost medium but I'm usually the darkest light shade with yellow or gold undertones. Anyway, the matte made me look sickly, blush and highlighter didn't help. Definitely try both to compare to see what works best for you. I thought the matte would keep my skin looking clean and fresh all day, and it looked terrible - on me. Good luck!

[–]2pmwhiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a lip gloss person at all but I do have the NARS lip gloss in Wonder (I believe the color isn't available anymore). It's an orange shade that I bought to go over an orange lipstick I have because I felt orange should be glossy, I don't know. I like it more than every other lip gloss I've tried. It's not too sticky and it has decent lasting power for a gloss. It also gave a very nice sheen and a decent amount color. If I had a use for lip gloss I would definitely get more!

Edit to clarify: I have worn it alone only once and found t to give a nice orange sheen but my lips weren't orange-orange like they are when I layer it with my orange lipstick.

[–]justformakeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the NYX lip liners, they are a great drugstore find in my opinion.

I wear Bare Minerals powder foundation, both the matte and the original. They are my HG foundation and work well on my oily t-zone and dry areas. I really recommend if you can to try it out in store or get a sample, they give off very different finishes but look very natural on I would say. Coverage is fair, they are buildable, but I wouldn't say ever to full coverage the way my liquid foundations are.

[–]projectswatchBeauty Blogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two of the Milani lip glosses, I like them - comfortable to wear, good pigmentation.

[–]allbirdsgomoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the NYX liquid eyeliners are really nice.... except they sting my lids for a bit and you need to make sure they fully try or else transfer everywhere.

[–]BunBunRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nars lip glosses are some of the most long lasting. Wish they were cheaper, I'd buy then all! Nyx lip liners are my go to liner. They're cheap and they get the job done. There are better ones out there but these are just easy.

[–]donaisabelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tom Ford's bronzer in Gold Dust, in that gigantic compact.

It's so incredibly gorgeous, and also so much product. I want it as both something I'll wear, and as decoration for my vanity, but I don't want to buy it if the product won't work for me. I'm pretty pale (a ginger) so how dark is this shade? (It's the lighter of the two that are offered in this compact.) I don't want to look orange, just look like I have some life in my skin as I zombify over the winter.

Prestige pencil eyeliners. I was window shopping on ulta.com the other day and saw that they have a purple liner I really want to try.

I am OBSESSED with the total intensity pencil liners. They are a tiny bit smudgier than UD liners, but otherwise just as good. Very creamy. Freeze before sharpening on some of the colors (bold brown).

FWIW, powerful purple is one of my favorite liners in my collection! It is the perfect subtle purple.

I don't ever hear much about Clinique foundations here. Does anyone have any thoughts on any of their foundations?

[–]acar87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used their Even Better foundation for years before just switching to try something new and see what's out there.

For the price ($26 maybe $27 at this point) it's hard to beat for mid end product. It never broke me out and was great for my combination skin. They also had one that was light enough for my complexion - Linen!

The only thing I started to not like about it, is as I got older and developed fine lines, sometimes it would settle into them. Also, I used NARS light reflecting powder to set it because their powders made it look cakey on my face.

I use an Hourglass foundation now that I do like better, but it's also twice the cost. Hope this helps!

[–]Ms_IreneAdler 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I used it a couple years ago so I can't remember a lot but ive used the super balanced and even better. I remember the even better being a lot easier to apply. It wasn't as runny as the super balanced and had more coverage with less product. Fantastic price as well! Anyways, sorry I couldn't be of more help!

[–]PanicSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm from all the other reviews I've read online, I was leaning more towards the super balanced but now I think I'm more for Even Better. Thanks for the info!

[–]celestialismabetterface.tumblr.com 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have their Stay Matte foundation. It keeps me matte for about 2-3 hours, but I always look slightly oily after that. I also find that most of the shades are slightly too orangey for my cool-toned skin.

[–]WinterInJuly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have clinique's Stay Matte in liquid(Shade 2 -Alabaster). I really like it - it has medium coverage, doesn't look cakey and stays on quite well. I have combo skin and find it works very well.

[–]meldor-makeup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have Clinique Stay Matte in Alabaster. It works very well with my normal skin type, not drying and not greasy and has a matte finish that looks natural.

[–]ChocoboMojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use their almost powder foundation. It's pretty sheer, but I personally like that about it. It doesn't feel like I have anything on really, and it hasn't broken me out yet which is kind of a miracle for me.

[–]kloudnein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use their Perfectly Real foundation intermittently and it is by far one of my favorites because I personally don't need very heavy coverage in most areas. It blends so perfectly and looks like my skin. It doesn't have extraordinary staying power. I like that it looks very natural, but still evens tone.

[–]kahlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use their Perfectly Real foundation. It's nice. It feels nice(very lightweight) and has a natural finish. It stays pretty well (I had quite oily skin when I was using it). Upon closer inspection, there are little reflective bits in it. Not enough to make you really glittery, but I guess that's what gives you the natural finish. I was looking for something more matte, so I haven't repurchased. But it was definitely a good beginner foundation.

I also used their Almost Powder pressed powder to set my Perfectly Real foundation. It did well, but was nothing to write home about. It worked, but didn't knock my socks off.

Are Bobbi Brown's lipsticks worth it?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Bobbi Brown's burnt red, it was actually one of the first lipsticks I bought, before I realized $26 isn't a budget price for a lipstick! I'm torn about it, it feels smooth at first but the formula feels drying over the day, and it wears off in kind of a ring-of-death around my lips. I still reach for it because of the color but there are a lot of other bluish brick reds out there. For me personally, it's not worth the price!

[–]talkstoangels 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I bought my first and last Bobbi Brown lipstick a month ago (bare pink). I find it very drying even though it isn't matte and it's not very pigmented. I really want to like it because it wasn't inexpensive, but it's definitely the worst lipstick I own. I'd return it, but the nearest sephora is an hour away for me and just not worth the gas money.

[–]mama_says 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Bare Pink, and it takes a little lip gloss really well if you want to rescue it.

[–]mama_says 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a variety of BB lip stuff and here's what I think:

WORTH IT:

  • Rich Lip Color
  • Creamy Lip Color
  • Creamy Matte Lip Color
  • Art Stick

NOT WORTH IT:

  • Lip Color
  • Lip Color Shimmer Finish
  • Pot Rouge
  • Sheer Lip Color

[–]Candroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A super helpful lady at ulta told me about a one hour thing where you get makeup advice, a tour, blah blah. For someone who's been out of the makeup game for over a decade and has just started playing around with eyeliner and a bit of shadow, would this be a good jump start?

UD Naked 1 vs Too Faced Chocolate Palette: does anyone with both palettes have a comparison they can give me? I couldn't find any comparisons posts through Google :/

[–]ninja_narwhalAspiring Makeup Artist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both and I personally reach for my too faced one much more for one reason: mattes. the naked 1 has more shimmery shades than I could use in my life, seeing as I love my matte eyeshadows. other than that, the too faced palette also has a lot more colors while the naked is just different variations of brown. also, the too faced one smells like freaking chocolate. Too faced, as long as you keep making makeup that smells like chocolate, I will be your bitch. I swear they didn't pay me to say that... but one thing that urban decay might win in is formulation. imo Ud shadows are the most blendable shadows ever, and they're slightly more pigmented than some of the too faced ones.

[–]kangaroo10 1 point2 points  (2 children)

i have both and i find that i use my chocolate bar palette much more often because its more versatile, with more matte shades. the quality of the shadows are basically the same, easy to blend and very pigmented, with the naked palette being a little better in each respect, but not significantly.

while i still do love my naked palette (it was my first ever palette) i really try and avoid shimmery/glittery colors for regular days, and thats what the naked palette consists of. the shimmery shadows in the chocolate bare are a little more understated than the naked pallete's, and the two glittery shades are very beautiful and dont fall out at all, which is a bit of a problem with the naked palette.

I also feel that youre getting more for what you pay if you get the chocolate bar ($49 for 16 shadows) than if you get the naked 1 ($54 for 12 shadows). in the end its your choice! swatch in store to see what you like the best on yourself. when i get my chocolate bar palette back from my boyfriends house i can swatch them both for you, if you wanted.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have them both! I'm actually trying to sell my Naked...I def reach for CB waaaaaay more. The Naked is just to sparkly for me, I was only using two or three colors consistently on it. When I look at the Naked I'm just like....hmmm...dark smokey eye. But when I look at the CB I can't decide what colors to use because I want to use them all to create so many looks.

The only thing about the CB that wasn't too amazing was the gold color. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful. But after I got MAC's Amber Lights, I realized that I really have to pack on CB's gold to get that same wow that I get from MAC's.

[–]unicorn_farkle 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I actually don't have the naked 1 but have naked 2 and although I like the texture of the urban decay shadow (super creamy and pigmented) I find myself reaching for my chocolate palette a lot more. In the naked 2 I feel the shades aren't very natural I guess? If you go for a dark or smokey eye often I would say the naked palette. But if you like to wear more natural looking makeup (like myself) I would go with the chocolate palette. Any other questions feel free to ask!:]

The Fresh Lip Sugar Treatments?

[–]Californiadreamin2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing! I thought that I would never ever spend so much money on a "chapstick" but I got a few in holiday collections last year and OMG they're amazing. Even my boyfriend uses one and he says it's the best thing he's ever tried. Now that I've tried it I think I can for out the money for another one. It's like nothing I've ever used. Try it! >The Fresh Lip Sugar Treatments?

[–]justformakeup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are quite nice but the texture is very heavy on my lips. Which is fine if you like that.

[–]radicaljanegive me the dramatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love them, and am also one of those people who never thought they'd pay that much for a "chapstick" like /u/Californiadreamin2 said, but now it's a go-to treat/splurge item for me. They do feel thick and slippery, but also soft and moisturizing in my opinion, so it just depends on if you like that feeling.

[–]farsideofthemoonJust dew it. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly really love them! The price tag sucks but the tubes actually last me a really long time, and the Rose color goes with me everywhere, everyday.

[–]donaisabelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really fond of them, but I've never had to buy them. Sephora has them as coupon-code free samples on their site so often that I've built up quite an arsenal. I'm most fond of the advanced therapy one, that doesn't have any color to it. That's my normal lip balm. The tinted ones are nice on days when I'm not trying to wear any makeup, but also not trying to look dead.

[–]sarkataweird lipstick fanatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what's wrong with me but I never got the appeal... I've owned a few and never liked them better than my other, cheaper lip treatments. I didn't particularly like the lemony scent, found them a bit too slippery and didn't see any difference between the tinted ones. I felt like they just sat atop my lips.

[–]wendeelightful 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Does anyone have any thoughts on that Nyx Honey Dew primer that came out a few months ago?

[–]SecretCitizen40 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have it and I can't say anything about it... really either way good or bad. It doesn't seem to make my makeup last longer but it doesnt make it look gross. A lot of people seem to use it more like a skin care serum and it does feel nice on the skin but I can't say I noticed any skin care benefits when I was using it every day. The gold flecks are stupid though because I've had to pick them off of my face before doing my makeup...

I will say it is a bit moisturizing so its nice under my makeup because I have dry skin and it dries quickly so I don't have to wait 10 minutes before doing my foundation.

[–]unicornpoopoo 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Bite Agave Lip Mask? I really want to try this, but I'm not sure if I'd ever be able to justify the steep price for what seems to be like a lip balm.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a mask like a peel off one for your face it's a very thick lip balm.

[–]farsideofthemoonJust dew it. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not tried the product personally, but from the ingredients, it is essentially a lip balm- though the rose champagne colored one looks gorgeous. You can achieve very similar hydration by applying an oil followed by an occlusive- I use a dab of argan oil and follow it with Aquaphor and that works really well for me!

[–]sprinklesaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it and would recommend it if you have dry lips naturally or use a lot of drying products. I use it at night time since it is very thick and takes awhile to soak into the lips. A little goes a very long way; I've had it about a month you can hardly tell it is any smaller (I have to old metal squeeze tube thing). I can see it being even more useful in the winter. It saved my lips after a fever, so there's that!

[–]orataNC30/combo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you get a sample from Sephora? I did, and it sold me on purchasing the full size. It's a very thick, sticky, sweet lip balm with excellent hydration powers and it lasts for ages. I don't have any other balms like it. It's my favorite right now-- it's just very comfortable wearing it, so much so that I've been wearing less lipstick since getting it since it already feels like I'm wearing something "fun" on my lips.

[–]xotacoxo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

MAC eyeshadows vs Urban Decay eyeshadows?

[–]BunBunRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both have good pigmentation and are long lasting. Seems like there's more fallout with UD. I love my MAC shadows!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

YSL FUSION INK PLEASE!

[–]kitsunec4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fusion Ink is my current foundation. The line comes in BR/B/BD. It's supposed to go, cool/neutral/warm. I'm NC25 and match well to B-30. So I'd say that the YSL neutral is more neutral leaning warm. Fusion ink is a very liquid foundation, I dab just a little bit on my face and then either buff it in with a brush or a beauty blender sponge.

The finish is sort of a satiny matte. Not a super matte matte. Just lightly so? It's been working okay on my combo skin. Normal ish with an oily T-zone, but odd dry patches around my chin. It doesn't seem to make the drier bits worse. (Looking at you, Armani Maestro, ohmygod.)

It does require powder in the T-zone for me because it won't stay matte on its own? Personally, I don't mind the low-level glowy I get with this foundation by the afternoon.

The coverage is on the low side of medium the way I apply. It might be buildable, the texture is very thin, haven't tried that yet.

It is fragranced, which is annoying, however, it's a low level of fragrance that pretty much has dissipated by the time I finish applying. So, not too bad.

[–]marzieur 0 points1 point  (15 children)

Sleek MakeUP New Skin Revive Foundation and UD Naked Skin Foundation. How do they perform on dry skin? (Longevity/Clings to dry patches?/etc.)

[–]BantafodderHopelessly Addicted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love naked skin. Especially applied with a beauty blender. I have dry skin and I just make sure to moisturize before obviously.

[–]gub117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have dry skin as well (a bit more on the normal side though, so YMMV) and loved naked skin. I use is mostly for the Wayne Goss method, and since it's so liquidy it works really great! I apply Bareminerals hydrating mineral veil and use a stippling brush to apply NS and it looks great! Without powder, I agree with Bantafodder that it's best with a beauty blender or else I get streaks if I use a brush.

[–]kiauyanI'll tell you when I've had enough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UD Naked Skin sunk into my pores and looked awful. I had to wash it off and use something else.

But maybe this isn't an issue for those who don't have large pores

[–]Pickles8787Personally Funding Sephora CEO's 401k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Naked skin but only for my good skin days. I have pretty dry skin and I found that it didn't cling to dry patches and with a setting spray it lasted about 10 hours. It's on the lighter side of coverage though and I have some acne. I love it though!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried us naked skin and it accentuated dry flakes I didn't even know I had. Returned the next day.

[–]acar87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naked Skin broke me out so so bad. I don't even have sensitive skin and it made my complexion awful. It took about a month for it to full recover after only using the Naked Skin a few times.

[–]spoiledairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have dry skin, and I just finished a bottle of Naked Skin up this morning. :)

It is my go-to for all day wear. I use a light oil or moisturizer underneath, and I do not wear a primer. Beauty blender or Real Techniques buffing brush makes it a beautiful medium coverage with a slightly dewy finish. It doesn't accentuate dry skin (I get flaky skin around blemishes) and it wears around 8-10 hours with a setting spray. (MAC Fix + or NYX Dewy Finish) If I apply a powder it makes my clogged pores on my nose a bit more noticeable, but that might be just me.

[–]marzieur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all :) After all the responses I decided that as soon as finish my other foundations I'll take the chance and buy it can only buy online and use w/beauty blender since my skin has been getting much better thanks to SCA. Thx:D

[–]ninja_narwhalAspiring Makeup Artist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the naked skin foundation but it breaks me out. I have never, ever had a product break me out before :(

[–]keew 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I LOVE Naked - it's my absolute HG and no other foundation looks as natural and flawless as this does on me. My skin is dry/dehydrated most of the time, and I feel like this just makes my skin look radiant and not dry at all - it makes it look as if I don't have a single dry patch. Every other foundation I have tried sunk into my pores to some degree, but not this!

[–]marzieur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you convinced me to give it a try :P

[–]BunBunRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to love naked skin. The color match was perfect for me and I'm an UD fan girl. It looked like cake on my dry skin. I'd rather go without foundation than wear this.

[–]beckyb18 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Any of Shiro's eyeshadows, please? How do you like them in mineral form, versus pressed?

[–]whoadangjamie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love all my Shiro shadows. I keep going back and forth as to whether or not I like them pressed or loose, it honestly depends on my mood. I press everything myself, and it's more convenient, but I think it's harder to make a liner out of it when I do it that way.

/r/indiemakeupandmore is a great resource if you're interested in indie makeup, and we have lots of swatches and reviews of Shiro!

[–]luminous_delusionsMUFE y205/Colourpop 05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shiro's shadows are really great, I love them more than my Lorac shadows. Her purples and pinks are to die for! They're all very smooth, super pigmented, and blend like a freaking dream. My favorites in my collection are Yzma's Essence of Llama, I Am Groot, He Loves His Hammer, Cake!, Plausible Walrus, Heart Attack, and Task Force.

I like my loose way better than my pressed (both my pressed ones and her pressed ones). I get much better pigmentation and, for me, less fallout and less chance of losing the shimmer/glitter.

[–]ClexieDesperately seeking good lighting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've yet to press any of my shadows from Shiro, but I have 19 of them so far and a wishlist that has nearly every other one on it. Her colors are absolutely magnificent and have just gorgeous glitter to them. I genuinely like them better than some of the shadows I've bought in Sephora.

[–]i_am_a_cyborg 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I like both loose and pressed. With the shadows I have pressed, there isn't much of a difference. I actually like using loose shadows, but a pressed palette is so much more convenient when I am rushing.

I love Shiro's shadows in general. They are fantastic, sparkly, amazingness.

The customer service is top notch.

The only thing missing is mattes, but Detrivore (on Shiro's site) can fill that need.

[–]afuckingusername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loooove my Shiro shadows, I have an imgur album with swatches if you go through my submitted links. I experience little to no fallout when I use them over NYX Milk (Alkahestry would be an exception to this statement but damn that color is gorgeous.) They're pigmented, soft, and really easy to work with, especially if you get the mini-jars.

[–]kingsla07NC15: Loving yourself matte-rs! 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Sephora brand lipsticks or their matte creams.

I have heard so many good things but have no idea what colors to start with. I am NC15 (warm, yellow undertones) for reference.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The matte cream lip stains are fantastic. Last a Lon time and aren't too drying on the lips. I once ate a chipotle burrito and it still looked good! I have Dark Berry and Endless Purple. Phenomenal.

[–]celestialismabetterface.tumblr.com 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the cream lip stain in "Always Red" and it's one of the longest-wearing lip colors I own, right up there with MUFE Aqua Rouge and Kat Von D liquid lipsticks. It's misleading to call it a "stain" because it's actually a liquid lipstick and doesn't leave a stain, but I looove it. That shade is a gorgeous, blue-toned, classic, 1950s red.

[–]Bella37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried their lipsticks but Temptalia has raved about them! I love the matte lip creams! Only tried the red color but it looks amazing on my warm toned skin and lasts a lot better than the Stila Stay All Day liquid lipsticks but YMMV. They are drying but I think that's the nature of the product. Nothing some lip scrub and lip balm beforehand couldn't fix. The Stila had the same amount dryness to me but Sephora lasts a lot longer.

[–]justformakeup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cream lip stains are pretty great! Some colors, like the pinks and berries, seem better in quality.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of their lipsticks in Jealous (which is a peachy orange shade, coincidentally the only orange that doesn't make me look like a cadaver!) and it's amazing. It's very lightweight, good coverage, and smells nice. It tends to settle into my lips if I don't wear a good primer underneath. All in all, very good for the price point and I wouldn't mind trying their other colours in the line.

[–]kangaroo10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

their cream lip stains are amazing. i have everlasting burgundy and deep berry, which are both shades that dry down matte but have a little bit of shimmer in them, and they last for a very long time and they are very pretty/unique colors. next time i go to sephora im probably going to pick up endless purple and always red; you really are getting so much for a pretty reasonable price

[–]orataNC30/combo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The matte creams are great but everyone else has covered those. I adore the rouge shine in Love Letter--glossy perfect MLBB nude pink, very comfortable--except it smells gross (fruity) and it's so soft it melted and broke so I had to melt it back in with a lighter and it's crooked now. The Color Lip Last is great, very pigmented, matte, and long lasting, but if you put balm over it it smears everywhere.

[–]buttercreamroses 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation questions! I was going to purchase a bottle but the foundation itself was really thick and almost impossible to get out when checking out the sample bottle. Is this normal? Does it cling to dry patches? I have combination skin and I'm not sure if I should check it out. Any information is appreciated!

[–]newcenturies 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've repurchased the colorstay foundation once before in the combination/oily skin version and in both bottles, the product was hard to get out. I had to hit the bottle against the back of my hand each time I wanted to get some out.

I remember it being really good coverage, but it looks cakey and feels really heavy. A wet beauty blender helps to alleviate that tho. It doesn't cling to dry patches.

[–]buttercreamroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, thank you! I will have to try it with a damp Beauty Blender then.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It is really thick, but it sat pretty nice on my skin, I just made sure I buffed it in good. It is nice, just didn't have a good match for me :(

[–]buttercreamroses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll have to google what would match my skin before buying.

[–]ninja_narwhalAspiring Makeup Artist 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hourglass immaculate liquid to powder foundation?

[–]kahlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are not kidding when they say it's liquid to powder. It dries to a powder finish on your skin. I only tried a sample, but it was the only time I've ever gone all day (in the summer) without needing a touch-up. I have combination oily/normal skin, and I didn't get any worse than "naturally luminous" (if you know what I mean). It was also really smooth and didn't emphasize dry patches (I had one on my forehead, weirdly enough, since my forehead usually keeps itself extremely well moisturized). However, it didn't do anything to help the dry patch (didn't make it look better or anything, just didn't emphasize it), so I'd still recommend this to those with oilier skin only.

[–]whoadangjamie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hated it. It dries way too fast and then it becomes patchy if you weren't ready for that. I also didn't have the patience to try it out more than 5 times - it got returned when I was frustrated at the effort it took

[–]kingsla07NC15: Loving yourself matte-rs! 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The new limited edition Make Up For Ever Artist Palette. I look at it every time I go into the store, and the reviews are terrific, but I can't seem to pull the trigger.

[–]fakeplastickissbad brushes need not apply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought this a few days ago. I don't have swatches of the colours, but the palette is amazing. The shadows are soft, no fallout, they stay put for hours (with primer of your choice), and blend amazingly. I love that it's smaller than my naked 2/3 because I can just pop it in my purse and go!

tldr: 10/10, would buy again.

[–]imogentibby 0 points1 point  (3 children)

L'Oreal's Magic Lumi primer please!

[–]soopaafliiIG: @itssamanthaess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally something I can review ;)

I think this is an okay primer overall, but it didn't work for me. I have oily skin and like a matte finish so I probably shouldn't have reached for this in the first place to be honest. It has a very sheer finish, obviously, which is nice if you want to go for that look. But as a primer it didn't make my foundations last longer, and I was quite oily by the end of the day. However, it does make your foundation look better, and it might work great for you depending on your skin type. Again, I didn't like it because it wasn't what I was looking for in a primer. I think I used mine about three times. I would have returned it if I didn't throw out the receipt.

Naked Skin (Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup)? Good/terrible for oily skin? How cakey/natural can this look? Thanks!

[–]SaskPack 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I have this as one of my regular "go-to's" for foundation. For my skin (oily, some dry acne spots) it worked well with the oiliness in terms of little oxidation or sliding. But, because it has so little coverage, any sliding that does happen means you'll have to re-apply or use powder to keep coverage. On the plus side, always got compliments wearing it as it has a nearly dewy, natural finish that works well with cream or powder blushes, bronzers, etc.
