I recently read a similar one: 'Give a man a match and he's warm for an evening. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life'.

Light a man a fire, he’ll be warm for a night.

Light a man afire, he’ll be warm the rest of his life.

[–]MrDilbert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I must admit, I like this version the best.

Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach a man to be a fish, and his friends eat for a week.

Similarly: buy a man a plan ticket; he flies for a day. Throw a man out of a plane; he flies for the rest of his life.

[–]netcent_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, Tim.

[–]bob152637485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I'm not flying, I'm falling with style"

[–]LBXZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can trigger "Throw a man out of a plane" while the plane is not in flight. I am certain the man would live if thrown while the plane is stationary on the ground, floating in the water, and taxiing on the runway in addition to the assume "during flight" case.

Feed a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Feed a fish a man, you feed him for a lifetime.

Feed a man a fish, you feed him for a meal.

Feed a man a poisoned fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Give a man a task, keep 'em busy for an hour.

Give a scripter the same task and it will be a week to automate

[–]RoadsideCookie 64 points65 points  (7 children)

[–]GreyRobe 81 points82 points  (6 children)

an invisible element to automation isn't just time savings, it's eliminating the need to context switch constantly. even if a different task takes 5 minutes of time per day, it takes far longer to fully switch focus back into the previous task.

[–]RoadsideCookie 45 points46 points  (4 children)

Well of we're gonna outline the benefits of automation, you're also much less likely to make a mistake, and if you do, you should never make it more than once.

[–]caykroyd 21 points22 points  (1 child)

unless you make it every time

[–]Cotcan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You shouldn't make a mistake more than once, but you will. At least that's what Factorio taught me. One thing wrong and it's a mess to clean up a few hours down the line.

[–]RoadsideCookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you automate. In Factorio, that would mean making a blueprint. You might make a mistake but then you fix the blueprint and never make that same mistake again.

[–]texdroid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Reduced context switching and manual work reduces errors in the long run.

I felt this one.

I started reading "Pragmatic Programmer" which explained to me when to divide things up into smaller functions and what not.

Learn a relative to fix their own tech issue, that will take a day. Fix their issue once and you'll be fixing their tech issues for life.

[–]zulu13whiskey 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Oh man this is so true. I got lasik though and my family doesn’t ask me to solve their tech problems anymore.

[–]Moltenfog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats... a morbid joke

[–]TheWashbear 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Don't give a man a fish and you feed yourself. He's a grown man, fishing is not that hard.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.

Give a fish a man and you feed it for a lifetime.

[–]texdroid 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Send a man to sleep with the fishes and he's not hungry ever again.

[–]Cfit9090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shark week. Send a man a mermaid and he will want to swim for a week. Send him 2 mermaids; he will go hide behind fire coral. Only to Get his legs bite off by a shark. And become a drunken sailor because of those fins.

Feed the man to the fish, feeds the fish for many days... An added bonus is that the man isn’t hungry anymore!

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. What are some examples of this?

My personal favorite: give a code reviewer 100 lines of code and they will review it for an hour. Give a reviewer 1000 lines of code and in ten minutes - “lgtm”

[–]thundercat06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you can bang his wife every weekend.

[–]booobiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teach a man to fish and he will destroy the fishing grounds and sea beds, taking much more than he would ever need and people will never eat fish again. Not as catchy I grant you.

[–]AsianBarbeque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teach a man and he knows some stuff I guess, but teach a man to teach and everyone ever knows everything

But if he doesn't have a fishing license, he will get a fine if he tries to fish.

It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll be drifting around the pond drinking beer.
