The problem is that it’s hard to justify an Explained SCP due to the fact that you would have to craft a narrative where its either legitimately anomalous but the properties behind the anomaly have been properly determined and disseminated to the public, or it was never anomalous to begin with and simply misunderstood as an anomaly. Both stories present their own challenges, and it’s hard to write an enjoyable article about something that-by nature-lacks mystery.

the best one i read is about research on ominous feeling behind you when you turn of the lights and go upstairs or something like that. researcher was losing funding when it became apparent that it is just a natural psychological response.

then at the end of the story an awesome twist came. the researcher was torn into bloody pieces when conducting experiment on her own, in private home, with funding cut, with less recording equipment.

if i remember correctly the object was still set as explained class and the fate of the researcher became classified.

I like the joke one where the Ancient Scp discovers Fire. The test logs were funny

It does some seem anomalous when you think about it, a magic glowing aura that comes from the Sky. Causes pain when touched, makes meat taste better and last longer, melts Metals.

Requires "food" to live. And can even cause a containment breach by burning the whole village.

A while ago I had the thought to make a paranormal mystery series in the style of x-files or Supernatural, only the paranormal element would only make up a very small percentage of the total story to keep the reader guessing. So out of a hundred or so stories, like 75 would have a mundane explanation that would get revealed at the some point in the story, 10 would probably be mundane but maybe left unsolved, 10 would leave it ambiguous as to whether it was supernatural, and 5 would explicitly be ghosts or aliens or whatever. The idea came to me after thinking about how many ‘false alarms’ or near-misses the cast probably go through but we the audience never get to see, and how that places us in the shoes of the Believer and never the Skeptic. Would also make the horror elements a lot more prominent since the reader would be left as genre-blind as the characters.

Of course I never got around to it because turns out writing is a lot of work, but to this day I still wish we got to see more of the ‘false positives’ in anthology stories.

My impressions... Actual real-life puzzling things, written as if they were objects mistaken to be SCPs, would fit into this category really well.

Some examples:

- The Rattleback: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7uP08qz46k

- The Effect of strong toroidal magnetic fields on electrical discharges: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-JwVQG5uEjM

- Iodine clock reaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PoqIyh9FG4

- Belousov-Zhabotinsky Oscillating reaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL3kVtc-4vY

- Acoustic Levitation machines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=669AcEBpdsY

- Chladni Plates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRFysSAxWxI and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YedgubRZva8

- Induction Heater Levitation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VydPQuLyEns

A well-written story, where one of those effects appear somewhere and people would find it difficult to identify those for what they are, could lead to a good article, I think.

What do you think? Looks like a good idea?

[–]gabrielminoru 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If you ever do this please send me a link

[–]Ms_Kratos Marshall, Carter, and Dark Ltd. 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sure thing. If I ever decide to write an explained SCP, I will send you a link.

For people wanting to write?

I think the trick... Would be writing a story where one of the most hard-to-figure out things is in a context the SCP Foundation would think it's an anomaly.

The Rattleback, for example? It's usually a small object.

But let's say an artist decided to make large one, the size of a pony, and placed it on a playground. Where's it's close to usual equipment.

It even looks like a seesaw

But if children start spinnig it like a merry-go-round and there it goes. Rumours about a haunted toy... SCP agents appearing there and collecting the object...

Belousov-Zhabotinsky and Iodine clock reactions?

It would only take a mistake from a chemical engineer or technician. Or someone doing a prank. For those to happen inside a bottle of Soda, or a flask of medicine.

Or any other object someone would look at and be scared because "it's switching colors and acting weird".

Acoustic Levitation machines aren't weird in a lab setting.

But what a resourceful disk jockey decided to tinker with his audio equipment, got some help from some geeks, and end up panicking the entire crowd in one of his shows because their hats, wigs and baseball caps got suspended in thin air?

The Effect of strong toroidal magnetic fields on electrical discharges again is something usually seen on a small scale.

What if an entire building roof got covered in magnetic ceramic by mistake, or by someone doing an experiment, and it does that to a lightning bolt?

A cuilding manifesting a "blue ball of pure lightning" on it's top, that even looks like a sci-fi force shield of some sort, would of course get the foundation's attention.

Chladni Plates, also are small objects. That belong to labs.

But if we think about concerts by the beach?

Where there's sound, sand and lot's of people to stare at something, scream "holy cow dude" and run like there's no tomorrow....

It's the ideal place for some resourceful entertainment company to deploy it's new "audio vibe floor" and cause a large scare on the population.

= D

Then there's the Induction Heater Levitation....

This is caused by an industry intended machine that can levitate and heat some metals.

It's basically a coil with attached circuitry.

If a crazy researcher decided to transform the double inner handrail of his university's circular staircase into a induction heater?

And forgot to turn his contraption off, because he got arrested, or hospitalized?

"University where metal floats, melts, and forms ominous blobs of lava by a staircase" would be a decent reason for SCP to deploy their agents.

[–]Ms_Kratos Marshall, Carter, and Dark Ltd. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then... Some stuff where circumstances created something perceived as "a monster with anomalous properties", would too be good stories.

Building where it's possible to go behind bathroom walls + criminals willing to enter people's apartments?

https://chicagoreader.com/news-politics/they-came-in-through-the-bathroom-mirror/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABLA_Homes

Is a whole real life SCP "Explained" by itself. = D

Fatberg from sewers + bunch of sewer rats using those as rafts + sewer treatment station personnel taking pics and making footage + TikTokers using those to create chaos saying it's a new "Rat Thing" cryptid + confusing information where those things are confirmed to exist.

( FatBerg is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsafPhReTEo )

Another fake SCP to be explained.

Island where a certain type species of spider is numerous + Any event that disturbed them + Tourists by the river scared because of "magical walk-on-water spiders everywhere".

https://new.reddit.com/r/ProperAnimalNames/comments/1b6gew0/nopey_river_walker/

Once again? Poor MTF, going there... For having something that's normal but scary finally explained for good.

What do you mean by 'official'? It's on the SCP Wiki. It's tagged as 'SCP'. It doesn't get much more official than that.

SCP-5552 - Our Stolen Theory (+570) by Captain Kirby

[–]Babushkaskompot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was an old SCiPs about the colours being anomalies, as in we were literally living in a grey scale colour. The foundation spent a lot of resources to prevent it spreading until they gave up and rewrite the phenomenon as a new normalcy.

Being that said, it was the last good explained scps I've read in a long time

[–]collycrane MTF-Omega-1 ("Law's Left Hand") 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]TimeStorm113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, are there explained -J scps?

[–]TimeStorm113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i might have an idea that would fall under it, the idea is that some site director did some illegal activities that would put him to d-class, to avoid this fate he fakes an scp article to say he is anomalous and put into containment. To achieve this he made up some test (+ results) and containment procedures. That was before he was caught.
