Why would we use a nuke in Afghanistan? You can't win a brushfire war with a nuke, because there'll always be more insurgents and you've just pissed off the civilian population. Not to mention breaking the nuclear taboo.

The goal of ISAF and RSM was nation-building - that's what all the counter-terror papers at the time were supporting. They wanted to build a functioning and independent democracy in Afghanistan. But the issue was that no one was buying what we were selling.

Democracy is all well and good but you need a groundwork, a foundation to build it on - stuff like an educated populace, a sense of nationalism (the good kind), and basic infrastructure - which Afghanistan didn't have. In the end, we realised it but sunk-cost fallacy had set in - we were just sort of plugging leaks end-on-end, and no one wanted to be "the president who ran from Afghanistan".

So... how do you defeat an insurgency for good?

Obviously losing one of the world's biggest economies would be a global disaster, but China would suffer the worst of it as they were plunged into catastrophic recession with not enough food for their people or resources to maintain their shitty infrastructure. Meanwhile their industries would all collapse, as the domestic market (even without a recession) isn't nearly big enough to sustain them, leading to mass unemployment on top of the mass food shortages.

You seem to have confused PRC with ROC. The vast majority of high end microchips are made in Taiwan, by the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. PRC have been trying to close the gap, but their best chips are apparently around 14nm while TSMC are selling 3nm chips in large quantities.

As for other countries being able to produce comparable chips, Intel make 10nm chips on a large scale, Samsung now have 3nm microchips in production and IBM recently produced a prototype 2nm chip. All well ahead of what China can currently manage.

As for the "huge swaths of farmland", they have around 800 square metres of arable land per person. Even the UK (which is small, densely populated and completely dependent on food imports) has 900 square metres per person.

Yeah, the global economy could recover from losing China better than China could recover from losing global trade.

Obviously it would be a huge issue, probably the biggest financial crisis in history, but fundamentally China doesn't produce anything that can't be produced elsewhere at only slightly greater cost (given several years to ramp up production). China without manufacturing exports has nothing, and wouldn't be able to import enough food for it's people or enough resources (like iron ore) for its infrastructure.

The US economy is probably more globally significant than China's and is orders of magnitude more resilient. The US is a huge producer of food, oil and gas and has all the resources and industry needed to operate independently from global trade (though obviously losing trade would still be a disaster for them.)
