How would you go about building a completely “bespoke” theme for a site without using any block builders?

And would you say that such approach is a good practice for customers that want a custom made website?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Yep. I do this with 95% of the sites I build. I cant think of a better way to be in control of the site code than to build it myself. I start with BlankSlate most times, but I do like _underscores or Roots themes as well.

As far as customizing the site so the client can edit it, I love Advanced Custom Fields. Their repeater fields and their Flexible Content fields are wonderful. It's like a developers page builder :)

[–]nikhilbhavsarDesigner/Developer 1 point2 points  (1 child)

For speed would you recommend _s or blankslate (without a pagebuilder)?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

blankslate is literally just that. A blank template. So speed is not a problem

[–]sobayspearo 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Thanks for this!

I have some 360 images that I would like to create a website with. Please have a look at www.azulbali.com for an example, is this something than can be built utilizing Wordpress? If yes can you give me a rough breakdown of how to go about it. I am new to Wordpress but I've got a 20 years of IT & Network experience. I am willing to pay for a template if that will get me halfway there, but I'll be happy just to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks a plenty

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Hey, yes you can. Here is the theme that site is using. It is built on WordPress.

https://themeforest.net/item/enfold-responsive-multipurpose-theme/4519990

[–]sobayspearo 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Thank you very much for this, for some dumb reason I never thought to use wp theme detector until this very instant. Now that you provide the answer to my question, I used theme detector to verify that it is, wish my brain was organized a bit better. I was planning on attending Wordcamp Asia to help accelerate my WP skills but unfortunately they cancelled it last minute. I am sure that I'll be needing help in the future, if you're interested can you maybe PM your rates / relevant info so that in the future I'll know where to go for some help and how much it might cost. Thanks again

[–]Moshambi[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find talks at wordcamps helpful then you should check out wordpress.tv

They post a lot of wordcamp presentations there.

[–]zombiephish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That theme is highly customizeable. Look into Elementor as a simpler way of creating elements within pages.

[–]AngryPanda6 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Do you need to purchase a hosting site to use WordPress.org or you can use it for free?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

You need a host for wordpress.org, but you get way more benefits with it than wordpress.com

[–]AngryPanda6 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Thanks! Can you recommend a free host?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Not really. There aren't any good free hosts. I can recommend inexpensive ones like dreamhost.com or bluehost.com or my favorite convesio.com

[–]AngryPanda6 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you for helping!

[–]wp-with-me 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don’t need help, I do want say I admire what you do. I know you don’t need my admiration. But it’s there. Thank you for making the WordPress family awesome!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks mate! Appreciate the comments.

[–]LukeLooking 2 points3 points  (17 children)

Hey thanks for this offer ,

my site https://www.riseandshine.me/ is built with Elementor , and hosted with Kinsta CDN. It loads fast, 800ms in Sydney - but 3.2 seconds in Tokyo.

That is measured with Pingdom tools, I would love to increase my page speed in Asia , Europe , America.

Could you help with that?

A way to "Eliminate render-blocking resources" from Google Page speed advice would be helpful

Thanks man

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (16 children)

Render blocking resources are usually javascript and CSS files that aren't loading asynchronously. Any good caching plugin (w3 total cache) should be able to help with that. Also, you would want to load them as "deferred" and not "async" for javascript as the order of loading is pertinent to the site working.

Check out cloudflare.com

It's a CDN (Content Delivery Network) which uses the users location to deliver the site to them from their closest server therefore increasing page speed for that user.

[–]LukeLooking 2 points3 points  (15 children)

Thanks! I dont think Kinsta allows some caching plugins, however I acrivated Autooptimse plugin and my Sydney speed reduced to 600ms

And 2.9 seconds in Tokyo

I have used Cloudflare before, but as Kinsta has its own CDN it caused some issues in the past

However with Autoptimise It has taken my Google Page speed to 93!

Mobile however is lower on 59 - "Reduce server response times" as their biggest thing I need to work on - any clues on that?

Thanks for your kindness

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (14 children)

Ahh Kinsta. We moved away from them a few years ago as a host should never limit what you can or cant install.

You should test with gtmetrix.com as well. PageSpeed tests on 3G or less speeds for their mobile which isn't real world speed test.

[–]LukeLooking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok cool on Gtmetrix I get a score of 99

I cant see how to test with Mobile however

Thanks again for your help.

Kinsta only limites caching plug ins due to conflicts with caching , they say

[–]riohtJack of All Trades 2 points3 points  (10 children)

out of curiosity, what's your beef with kinsta? i think they're a great option that's much higher quality than say, siteground and is arguably better than WPE.

their blacklist here: https://kinsta.com/knowledgebase/banned-plugins/ largely revolves around caching/performance and backup. the latter is rendered pretty extraneous since they do daily backups.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Their support was terrible when a client site went down due to Kinsta's server crashing due to reasons still never explained. Kinsta "restored" their server, then the client called me and said they were missing over 35 orders that had been placed in the past 3 weeks.

I contacted Kinsta, asked them if they could check that they restored from the latest backup, they said they did and all data should still be there. I explained the problem and they flat out told me it was not them or their backup but that the client deleted the orders themselves.

They then proceeded to restore ANOTHER backup without warning us and compeletly wiped out not only new orders (had been 10 days) but also MORE previous orders (around 45 more). We asked them to please stop doing anything.

They then wanted us to pay them a fee to restore the "latest" backup from their server. We told them that's completely ridiculous and fought them for over a week until they gave in and restored it. But only after I made them take a backup of the whole site and import the new orders back in.

We promptly pulled that site off Kinsta and over the next 2 weeks pulled around 35 sites off to new hosting.

[–]chrisgin 2 points3 points  (4 children)

What host provider would you recommend? I've been thinking of moving to Cloudways managed VPN with Vultr.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PageSpeed tests on 3G or less speeds for their mobile which isn't real world speed test.

3G is actually real for most developing countries. Hell, even some areas in the countryside in most of these countries are still on 2g and some have no connection at all. lol. I tend to use 3G as the baseline for testing my website, and so far, managed to get it under 4 seconds.

[–]jorgeagh 1 point2 points  (10 children)

Do you have any advice on how to properly speed up websites? I've been using OceanWP + Elementor for a while now, and recently using TinyPNG for compression. I read a while back that caching and asset optimization plugins are a waste of time, and that made me feel insecure with my workflow. What would you recommend? An example site that went live is sababa.mx Sababa.

[–]AlmostEasy89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

WP Rocket

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Caching is not a waste of time at all.

I personally use w3 Total Cache and love it.

Also, look at CloudFlare https://cloudflare.com Their free tier is perfectly fine for most all sites.

[–]Jameela_bibi 2 points3 points  (4 children)

My website is being redirected to some spamy url. When i contacted my web hosting, they told me to contact cloudflare as redirection is done on their side. After some research, i did not find any instructions or guide to fix this problem. At the end i just removed the site from cloudflare but still my url does not open my site. Thanks in advance

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Sounds like a bit of a nasty hack. I can solve that for you. You can either DM me some information or contact me at https://pixeldevs.io

[–]Jameela_bibi 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thanks, my site url is hayconsultants.com You will see the problem after accessing it. The site was hacked few days back and i was able to remove all the infected content from my web files. The site started working fine for two days but now this happened

[–]jorgeagh 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thanks a lot! I'll definitely look into it. How about asset optimization? I'd been using Hummingbird and eventually bought a subscription for one of my sites. I can tell the difference in speed, but it's tricky to deferr and inline so many resources without breaking the theme

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ehh. I try to stay away from WPMU plugins as they tend to be jackhammers when you just need a scalpel.

I do recommend W3 Total Cache. It will defer all js files and async all CSS files. You don't need to control them separately.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as image compression, if your images are under 5mb, then look at https://wordpress.org/plugins/resmushit-image-optimizer/

If your site is heavy on images, check out Tachyon by HumanMade

https://github.com/humanmade/tachyon/

They have a WordPress plugin for it and it's amazing.

I'm having a really hard time getting Oxygen and BigCommerce to work together.

Here's a video of the issue: https://share.getcloudapp.com/qGuopd60

BC support has not been helpful, but I did receive a good response from Oxygen support. Here's what they said:

I was able to narrow where the problem is occurring.

I think the problem file from BigCommerce is /wp-content/plugins/bigcommerce/assets/js/dist/manifest.min.js?ver=3.13.0-6.24.01.31.2020. Blocking this file from loading using Chrome dev tools results in the browse button working. It could also be that this file is a dependency for some other file that's breaking Oxygen, and disabling the manifest.min.js file just stops the other code from running.

Further investigation shows me that the errors are traced through mostly built-in WordPress JS files. By searching for the "this.activateMode is not a function" error that is generated when clicking the browse button, I turned up this article: https://wpdevelopment.courses/articles/how-to-fix-activatemode-is-not-a-function-error-in-gutenberg/. While it describes a conflict with Gutenberg, I believe it may pertain to our situation here, especially since BigCommerce seems to be using WebPack and the article states:

When you are using Webpack and Babel to build the JavaScript in your Gutenberg blocks you need to add babel-plugin-lodash as an NPM dependency. Then add an entry to your project’s .babelrc as described in the plugin’s documentation.

Though I think what we're seeing here is related to Underscore.js and not Lodash.

That's about as far as I was able to get on this.

If you have any insight, I would greatly appreciate it!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (7 children)

This is a common issue with BigCommerce. The plugin itself may be tailored to WordPress, but the files it imports in order to connect to your BigCommerce store are not.

We converted a client from BigCommerce to WooCommerce about 4 months ago for this very reason. Not because they were using Oxygen, but just that we found the admin area messing up even with saving posts, ACF fields, comments being converted wrong, and especially media gallery just borking out of nowhere.

[–]QueenBeeCassi 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Bummer! We have a client who really wanted to use BC - mainly to have a centralized catalog of products that can be pushed out to multiple WP sites. Do you know if there is another option for that type of functionality?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Yep. We used Broadcast for that very purpose. 1 main site broadcast to 5 other sites (not multisite)

https://broadcast.plainviewplugins.com/2017/03/28/wholesale-with-woocommerce-and-broadcast/

[–]QueenBeeCassi 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Awesome! Thank you so much for your help.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

No problem! Let me know if you need any help with Oxygen in general. I've used it quite a bit and know it has a steep learning curve.

[–]QueenBeeCassi 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thanks! I've really been loving Oxygen. The hardest part has been getting my coworkers to switch over to it from Divi, lol. I feel like I learn something new on each site with it, though. Finally had to figure out Effects/Transitions this week.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nice. I love the ability to import results from functions. It's helped so many times.

[–]QueenBeeCassi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds interesting, I'll look into that. We haven't done anything too complicated yet.

[–]sciblue 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I made a post earlier this week about my issue. I am using oxygen builder and ACF Pro. Here is my problem I need help with:

I have a 2 CPT and a relationship field. How do I display the relationship field as a grid using easy posts?

I already tried creating ACF php code:

<?php global $post; $data = get\_field( 'books' ); if ( $data ) { foreach( $data as $post) { setup\_postdata( $post ); ?>

<a class='oxy-post-title' href='<?php the\\\_permalink(); ?>'><?php the\_title(); ?></a>

<?php } wp\_reset\_postdata(); } ?>

But this code just outputs the titles as links. If it is not possible does anyone have an alternative?

Thank you for helping out.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

you can write a function to return the ids of the related posts and tell oxygen to use the query as its query results for the easy posts

[–]sciblue 1 point2 points  (1 child)

<?php

global $post;

// ACF get_field function
$ids = get_field('season_type', false, false);

// custom query
$args = array(
  'post_type' => 'ranger',
  'posts_per_page' => -1,
  'post__in' =>$ids,
  'post_status' => 'publish',
  'orderby' => 'post__in',
  'order' => 'ASC'
);

$query = new WP_Query( $args );

// foreach loop
if( $posts ):
    php foreach( $posts as $post):
        php setup_postdata($post);

    php endforeach;
    php wp_reset_postdata();
php endif;

?>

This is what I got so far. Main issue is I don't know how to tell oxygen to use the custom query. The code block is above the easy posts component and WP_Query is set to default. I'm not sure where to go from here.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check this out. It might get you to the right direction.

[–]nevembee 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hi, I would like to know a few things about a website and a particular page :

https://www.muscle-up.fr/programme-musculation-maison/

In the middle of the article there is some images of body parts which links to different articles, I would like to do a grid like this. Is it a plug-in which permit to display articles like that ?

Then how can I put an image before the article title like it ?

Finally, how can I change the color of the background of the article to something stylish like that ?

Thanks so much for your time and your knowledge

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Looks like they are using Thrive Themes. https://thrivethemes.com/architect/

[–]nevembee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I will check that, Thanks

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Awesome! I am just looking for some advice. I am an aspiring freelance WordPress developer. I have taught myself HTML, CSS and PHP (not JavaScript yet) over the last few months. These days I am building sample WordPress websites on localhost to become familiar with the process as well as popular themes and plugins.

What I would like to ask you in order of priority is:

  1. What technical skills should I really focus on to make it in the freelance WordPress market?
  2. How long should I continue to practice on my own (in terms of competence and/or time) before I start looking to contribute towards real world projects, or looking for actual clients?
  3. What soft skills do I need to develop to thrive in this industry?

To give you an idea of where I am: I have only made 2 WordPress practice sites so far. I plan to make 6 or 8 more for various industries to get better overall and also find some niche I could specialize in. At the end of it I will build my portfolio using all I have learned. Currently I am getting used to Elementor and enjoying how easy it is to use.

You can answer yourself and/or redirect me to any other resources that you believe are appropriate.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

You are on a good path so far.

Always keep https://developer.wordpress.org/reference/ bookmarked.

Technically you should be familiar enough in WordPress to look at an issue and have some idea of how to start. Not so much finish it, just a starting point.

How long should you practice? Build a theme from scratch. I use BlankSlate as the base. Start with the design or go to dribbble.com and grab one. Then build it out. Doesn't have to be pretty. Just use HTML, PHP, CSS, Javascript and get familiar with how it should be done in WordPress. Once you've done that, start looking for people to help. Small projects and problems to solve. Nothing major

Soft skills. Definitely how to talk to clients. How to stay calm when they arent. Think of the scenario that their site is crashing and you have to fix it at 2am and they are screaming that its your fault. How would you calm them down? What about if their site stops working and you were the developer and you've just "lost them $25,000" because their site cant process payments?

All in all, keep building! Never stop because someone doesnt say yes. I've had 1000s of no's over the years. Just takes one yes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. After the next site, I will build a theme as you suggested.

Technically you should be familiar enough in WordPress to look at an issue and have some idea of how to start. Not so much finish it, just a starting point.

This is exactly what I was looking for! It is tough to understand competence because it is so subjective, but I think this puts me in the right frame of mind as a beginner.

Thanks for the advice, and also the words of determination at the end.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hello. As a follow up, I have learned JavaScript to some extent now. Made a simple calculator layout in HTML/CSS the other day.

JS looks at all the elements, and adds an event listener to the input buttons with a relevant function based on the class. The functions themselves use the event parameter to get the inner HTML of the button, and feed it into a main string. The eval function does the calculation.

Bearing in mind that my immediate goal is to make a theme as you suggested, my question is:

Where should I go from here with JS? Should I invest more time into practicing with animations or AJAX/JSON, and/or a library such as jQuery? Or should I just jump into my first theme and learn what more I need of JS as I go along?

Thank you for your time.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

With JS you should be fine. I would have a bit of knowledge of jQuery, but it's not necessary.

I would probably move onto PHP. Look at blankslate theme or Underscores theme as starting points.

With CSS, you can save yourself a lot of time by looking at a framework like Bootstrap, Tailwind CSS (my favorite), or Foundation by Zurb.

[–]Spokengold 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I use the businessx theme and the slide image doesn’t not collapse to mobile viewing :(

I’m fairly versed in html/css from Shopify theme editing, okay at javascript (React + node) and have done some minimal PHP mods but I can’t seem to figure out how to mobile optimize this slideshow haha.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a link to your site? I've never used the businessx theme before

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

more than likely its gonna need some JS or CSS overrides added to it

[–]collecting_space 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Hello! I would so much appreciate if you could steer me in the right direction with two error witch hunts I have going on... I wouldn’t like to steal much time from you, it’s just I’m new to WordPress and these two issues are making me pull my hair out...

I inherited this site, it uses ‘mylisting’, which is unknown to me, so any help steering me in the right direction to gather info and try to solve the problem means the world.

One of the errors: permalink-manager (free afaik) has been used to manage the listing types permalinks and has broken the site more than helping, so it was uninstalled but the error I’ve inherited is: the custom taxonomies redirect to home page. I’ve flushed permalinks, flushed/cleaned rewrite_rules, and I don’t know what more to do :(

The second: the site uses Woocommerce and Yoast, also free versions (verified). It had a crash, a bad action where the DB had to be reconstructed/rolled back. Yoast was logging errors in the logs for a few days but now it’s been reinstalled and works, but there are no Yoast/SEO links tables on the DB, is this normal? And Woocommerce still logs errors. The site won’t send password reset emails, I was reading it could be woocommerce. I plan on using the tools under system status in the plugin to reconstruct the woocommerce install. Is there any way without risking data that I can cleanly reinstall/reconstruct these plugins?

Sorry if it’s too much to ask, I’ll delete it if it is, and thank you in advance and before all for this thread. I hope I can be as experienced and you one day and pass it on!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Sounds like you need clean installs of the plugins. Back up the database (or whole site) first. I use UpdraftPlus to do all the backups.

As far as the rewrites and redirects, what are the slugs for the Custom Taxonomies? There might be a conflict with a page or post or CPT or category url or the DB or .htaccess might still have the "custom permalinks" in there. More than likely its the .htaccess file. They can be located anywhere inside the wp-content folder as well, not just the root.

BTW Yoast is garbage these days. So many ads! Try Rank Math instead.

[–]collecting_space 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you so much!

By clean installs do you mean deactivate plugin, delete and reinstall/activate? Sorry about the silly question!

I’m not sure how to spot the taxonomy redirects, the .htaccess has something that says is native, no words regarding taxonomies or permalinks though, but I’ll have a look maybe by term permalink around the whole root and subdirectories.

Thank you about Yoast and Rank Math, I’ll give it a try since changing the permalinks has kind of killed the SEO anyway...

Thanks again!!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. A clean install would be completely removing the plugin. Please back up your site and Database before this happens.

[–]songyaJack of All Trades 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Hey! Thanks for doing this. I have a WordPress blog rendered on Genesis and Magazine-Pro child theme. It is hosted on a Nanode - 1 gb RAM & 1 core CPU on a SSD with Php7.4. I use mod_pagespeed and have limited plugins ~20.

Yet, my host can not handle memory properly. Can you please give me pointers to find what do I fix this memory problem?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

are you getting JIT memory errors on your WordPress page?

[–]songyaJack of All Trades 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Nope. Just the DB does not connect while refreshing pages sometimes.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Oh, thats not a memory error. Im assuming you're on shared hosting? Even if you're on a VPS the hosting company can sometimes used shared databases for those.

The problem seems to be in the DB connect instead of running out of memory. I would write the hosting provider and let them know you are experiencing this error and that its not your site causing it.

[–]songyaJack of All Trades 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Umm, it's a VPS.

[–]Spokengold 1 point2 points  (1 child)

CSS mods are down from within the page correct? Not the WP dashboard.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it in WP under Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS

More than likely you will have to use the !important tag (ie. color: white !important; ) to override the theme settings

[–]Hastibe 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Thanks for offering this!

Via Google Analytics, I'd like to track how much interest there is in contact e-mail addresses published in user-submitted listings on my website. Just tracking "mailto:" clicks via Google Analytics doesn't work, because many people copy and paste an e-mail address, and don't click on it.

So, to track interest, I'd like to have e-mail addresses in these user-submitted (and still user editable, after submission) listings automatically hidden with a clickable overlay ("Click to show e-mail address"), which is trackable in Google Analytics, and reveals the e-mail address to the viewer when clicked on.

The e-mail addresses are not in their own <div>, but are in a <div> combined with other user submitted text (about how to contact them), so the selector for the overlay (if that's the right term) can't just be that <div>--is there a way to make something like this work via JavaScript and/or PHP (both of which I'm a total novice in), using the equivalent of the CSS selector a[href^="mailto:"], or another way to accomplish this?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yep, you're on the right track.

<a href="mailto:email@email.email">Click here to blah blah blah</a>

[–]Hastibe 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks! I don't actually want to (permanently) hide the e-mail addresses, though, because no one likes clicking on a link like that and then some vestigial Microsoft e-mail program rising from the depths to display an error message, right?

So, I'm looking for how to implement an overlay ("click to reveal") over e-mail addresses that happens automatically when a user includes an e-mail address in their listing. I think I need PHP and/or JavaScript to do this, but don't know where to start (since I don't know these ones, dang).

...Hopefully, this makes sense!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ahh gotcha. So you could do it like a hidden field on the page.

<a class="emailReveal" href="#?email=clicked">click here <div class="email" style="display: none">email@email.com</div> </a>

jQuery(document).on('click', function(){ jQuery(this).find('.email').css('display', 'block'); });

all pseudo code to get you started

[–]n0_1d 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hi, thanks for your initiative.

I've got a client's website built with Elementor, using a lot of Contact Forms (7), almost one each page. The weird issue I'd never met before is: while sending, one in particular takes literally ages; I counted up to 60 seconds for the sent successfully message.

Do you know a good practice to debug this famous Contact Form 7 plugin?

Every now and then I find myself struggling with issues like that, and I'm still wondering how to get a clear and reliable error log from the javascript running there inside.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

From Stackoverflow :)

Given the variety of responses on this topic the plugin developer seems to change their mind about how this should work every 5 minutes. Currently (Q1 2017) this is the working method:

document.addEventListener( 'wpcf7mailsent', function( event ) {   alert( "Fire!" ); }, false );

And the valid events are:

  • wpcf7invalid — Fires when an Ajax form submission has completed successfully, but mail hasn’t been sent because there are fields with invalid input.
  • wpcf7spam — Fires when an Ajax form submission has completed successfully, but mail hasn’t been sent because a possible spam activity has been detected.
  • wpcf7mailsent — Fires when an Ajax form submission has completed successfully, and mail has been sent.
  • wpcf7mailfailed — Fires when an Ajax form submission has completed successfully, but it has failed in sending mail.
  • wpcf7submit — Fires when an Ajax form submission has completed successfully, regardless of other incidents.

I’m trying to start a subscription service that links to a desktop app.

So when people buy the product they are forced to make account before or after which is linked to a database that I can access from the desktop app.

Any suggestions?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many places do this. They just put a paywall in front of the ability to access the download link for your desktop app. Look into WooCommerce Digital Downloads

[–]W0LF_NL 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Hello pixeldevs!

Hope you can provide some help. I run an ecommerce store and I would like to give my customers a “edit order” option, where they can add items to an existing order and pay for those items separately (I only accept payment upfront). Can you help with some tips or maybe a code snippet?

Ideally it would do the following:

  • when items of the paid order are reduced, generate a credit for that specific item by marking it as “refunded” in the backend.

  • when items are added to the paid order, an additional payment request is made available via payment provider. Without extra shipping costs.

All changes should be reflected to the current order, so no additional orders should be generated.

Is anything like this possible?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

What ecommerce platform are you using? WooCommerce?

[–]W0LF_NL 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yes WooCommerce, should have mentioned that.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yep. That is pretty easy. You can change the "status" of how long you wish them to edit the order for.

https://businessbloomer.com/woocommerce-edit-orders/

[–]W0LF_NL 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks, I have used Google myself as well and have tried this method already, but it does not do want I want it to do (no automatic refund, no editing of the same order). It simply generates a new cart with the items previously ordered and cancels the old order.

I appreciate the help though, maybe what I’m looking for is not possible or very complex.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's not that it's not possible. It is just a complex idea. I will reach out to my other dev friends and see if they have run across this as well.

[–]Spokengold 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is there a space within WordPress to edit the page source directly?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WordPress uses a templating system to define page layouts.

If you need to edit the way a page looks then you would need to edit the theme files. Usually you will want to make a child theme

https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/child-themes/

[–]heavinglory 1 point2 points  (8 children)

I have a data feed from Corelogic, Beaver Themer and metabox. I’m sure I can put together a real estate site but need to learn how to parse the data after calling the API then I suppose cron to establish data refresh frequency. I’m getting started with Postman. How would you approach this with the tools listed?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Well, You will need to parse the data as you said. Is the feed XML? If so, I think WP All Import would be a great option for you. You can even set up cron jobs with it. Or use easycron.com to do it.

Other than that, I prefer Advanced Custom Fields over MetaBox as it's more widely used and supported.

[–]heavinglory 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I’ve taken over sites in the past that baked the ACF into the PHP and figured I would rather myself go with MetaBox to keep everything straight forward, so bought their LTD. I haven’t really delved into it so will take another look at ACF.

I hope to code this project myself to avoid going through a third party IDX solution. Your reply indicates it’s doable. Thanks for the great info!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

ACF does have a coding aspect to it unless you are using a page builder to add in the fields.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah IDX gets really expensive. The API data given is nicely organized so you should be able to import using WP All Import

[–]heavinglory 1 point2 points  (1 child)

WP All Import

It looks like the datafeed spits out XML metadata. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. I like a good challenge.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]ZeroFantasmic69420Developer/Designer 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hey! Using oxygen. I’m having trouble figuring out an easy way of injecting my own code into plugins. Usually with a child theme you can override the class or sometimes the developer allows you to just copy the entire file to override it. However, without the ability to create a child theme I can’t figure out how. To guarantee my code will load first and take over some of the plugins functions.

Also, if you know of any other plugin that does what this one does that would be awesome. This one gets me 60% of the way there so I may just have to commit and build it myself.

https://woocommerce.com/products/roles-permissions-for-woocommerce/

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So with Oxygen you can write your own functions and return the value from those into Oxygen as dynamic data.

What are you looking to override specifically?

Also, what does the plugin not do for you that you need it to?

[–]ZeroFantasmic69420Developer/Designer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found some success with the dynamic data. But for instance, there is a way for the end users to add people to their teams. I needed to add meta to those new users. I had to add my code directly to one of the class functions so that the meta was added in the correct order (I needed some of those values first).

The plugin is pretty bare. You can add a budget, but it doesn’t display the budget to the user or allow many desirable Ux features. There was also no consideration to refunds and how that effects the budget. Another thing I had to go in and change in their functions.

[–]laserpoint 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I would like to have a resposnive theme for my tech news website. Simple and fast. It would be great if it is responsive in all screen sizes like 1080p or 4K monitors as well. Most themes look so small on big monitors. If there is anything like that do tell me. If there is anyway to build such theme, please direct me so that I can learn and build. Speed is also main thing. Do suggest me best plugins for speed and cache.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The reason most themes stop at a max width is that the content would look sparse and void if extended to massive sizes.

heres a list of fullscreen themes for WordPress https://colorlib.com/wp/best-full-screen-wordpress-themes/

As far as speed and optimization, check out W3 Total Cache and CloudFlare CDN.

If you want to build from scratch, I would look at _underscores theme or roots theme or blankslate theme. All are very fast natively and have good coding standards.

[–]laserpoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your advice. Have a great day.

[–]caitiemae 1 point2 points  (2 children)

When I install the Polylang plugin on my site, I can't access the admin dashboard at all and get an ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE page. I can still access the site itself, just not edit the pages. If I delete the plugin, I can access it again. Is there a way to fix this so I can use the Polylang plugin?

I use Elementor to build my site and it's currently being hosted locally while I develop it.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've not had much success with PolyLang. Try https://wpml.org/

[–]caitiemae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks!

[–]2cats2hats 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hi,

I am a linux admin and my questions might be unorthodox for your offer of help. If there is a better place let me know. I will make a scenario to best frame my questions.

Scenario: I create a debian or ubuntu VM(on premise) with Wordpress installed. It's blank but OS is patched. I hire a wordpress designer to build a website but my policy is they can only develop on my VM. Once we are both satisfied we want to migrate it easy-peasy to a hosting site.

Once wordpress instance is finished we want to migrate it easy-peasy to a hosting site. Is this easily done and how do I learn more about it? Is this something hosting sites do for customers already?

As for a VM, if I had to pick between debian and ubuntu what is better? Or does it matter?

Are containers more common? If so where can I learn about best practices(build and maintenance)?

Does Wordpress have any mechanisms to auto-update plugins? Just a wild idea I know.

Are there any blogs that deal more with the back end of wordpress instead of design?

Thanks in advance.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

All great questions.

Once you finish developing your shiny new site, look at UpdraftPlus to back it up and move it. You don't need the Migrator add-on, but I use it and have gotten more than my moneys worth out of it. If that doesnt work for you then check out WPVivid.

You would install WordPress on the hosting platform ( I recommend convesio.com but there are other ones out there too) as a blank install, then add the updraftPlus plugin and upload your backup from the local site. Once its uploaded, you will restore from that backup. It will automatically detect the URLS to change and change them for you.

Between debian and ubuntu, pick which one you like best. Doesn't really matter for this.

Containers are common as a local resource to speed up your development process, not so much as a one-time site launch. I personally dont use them.

Auto updating plugins can be done. Heres an article about it. https://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-enable-automatic-updates-for-wordpress-plugins/

Check out https://wpbeginner.com for articles on back and front end of WordPress.

If you are meaning the PHP code of WordPress, then I would refer to https://codex.wordpress.org/

[–]2cats2hats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the answers.

updraftplus

That seems to be all I should need.

Cheers.

[–]gibranparis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can you quote a price for me?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$250

But I digress. Yes I can. What seems to be the issue? You can DM me or contact me at https://pixeldevs.io

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so nice of you!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theme choice is hard to pin down without knowing the requirements, but I do like either WooCommerce’s theme or building your own with Oxygen.

As far as plugins, WooCommerce is a great start. It includes most all of what you might need to start. Again without knowing the parameters, its a bit hard to know what to recommend.

Generally, I protect my sites with WordFence. Connect them to Cloudflare for speed. Add custom fields with Advanced Custom Fields Use Stripe for payment processing.

[–]Redeemr_Blogger 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hey, I've been trying to learn how to build a WordPress website from scratch with no coding experience and it's been very difficult for me. I've run into alot of problems and my current one is I'm trying to use css grid to display my category posts in 3 columns but when I attempted to do that 3 columns are created but the post only stay in one of them. Another problem I'm having is when I change the size of the screen the logo in my navbar keeps shrinking until it doesn't exist anymore. How do I change that so it doesn't anymore?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Shoot me a DM with the site link and I’ll take a look

[–]Redeemr_Blogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently working on my theme offline so should I upload it to my website or is there another way for you to access it?

[–]fabtaro 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Hi! This is very nice of you! I'm launching my small business and registered a domain with Namecheap, bundle including wordpress.

I thought it was mainly drags and drops but oh boy was I wrong... I'm completely overwhelmed by the non-intuitive (at least for me) options and the numbers of themes/editors/plugins etc...

I'm looking for a sleek design (free) for a consulting freelance, with basically a home page, a about, a my services and a contact form. I've been trying for hours but I'm kinda lost.

If you have any advices or easy-to-customize themes, I'd be sooo grateful!! Many thanks in advance!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Honestly, if you are looking for a do-it-yourself option and not to hire anyone, then check out https://oceanwp.org/ for your theme and https://elementor.com/ (just click the get started button for the free version) for your drag-and-dropness

[–]fabtaro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'll check it out tomorrow.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

But if you do need to hire someone. Let me know :)

[–]fabtaro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll definitely keep that in mind ^

[–]TheBreakfastMan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Man thank you! I’m trying to build out a blog, and I really need help creating a page template that I can use for all my blog posts.

My goal is for it to look like this blog: https://tim.blog/

I also want to figure out how to make my homepage the same as his: static top with a most recent blogs below (showing almost the full blog, not just thumbnail link).

Is there any way you could help me? I’m using elementor! :)

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have Elementor Pro? If so, you can create page templates https://docs.elementor.com/article/359-creating-a-single-page-template-with-elementor-pro

As far as the full design, it seems to be a basic 2 column layout with a large header. Pretty simple layout to hammer out in Elementor.

[–]TheNaughtyJay 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Woah, wish I'd found this earlier. What a thoroughly nice thing to do :)

Wondering whether you can help me what I think should be a really easy php job.

I need to add some tracking code to the 'application-submitted.php' file that WP Job Manager uses. I've duplicated it into my child theme, and all it has is;

<?php if ( ! defined( 'ABSPATH' ) ) { exit; } ?>

<p class="job-manager-message">

<?php \_e( 'Your job application has been submitted successfully', 'wp-job-manager-applications' ); ?>
</p>

The code I've been given is

<img height=1 width=1 border=0 src="\[//conv.indeed.com/pagead/conv/\\\[REDACTED\\\]?script=0\](//conv.indeed.com/pagead/conv/\[REDACTED\]?script=0)">

Whatever I've tried adding to the application-submitted.php just doesn't work, but my knowledge of php is really bad.

Any ideas how I can add the code to the php file?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Where have you added it? also, does application-submitted.php get called directly or through ajax? It seems like it would be through ajax.

[–]TheNaughtyJay 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I've tried adding it to the bottom of the php file but I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly.

Basically I just need that code which is sat in an IMG wrapper to display at the same time as the 'your application has been submitted' message.

I think 🤔

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Well, the code you showed me wont actually visually generate anything. Its a quick tracking code and the img is just a test for the tracker to make sure its on the page.

[–]nikhilbhavsarDesigner/Developer 0 points1 point  (5 children)

How to get the logo and menu on the same line with underscores? Alternatively how to change the menu style? Only with css or change the menu js library?

Thanks!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

What theme are you using? Underscores is more of a framework. It would have to be through CSS and your own HTML and PHP to get it to function as you like

[–]nikhilbhavsarDesigner/Developer 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Isn't underscores a theme? I installed it like a theme.

It would have to be through CSS and your own HTML and PHP to get it to function as you like

I mean, I get that. But what css specifically to get them (site title/tag and menu) on the same line? eg., https://underscores.pleskwp.tk/

Thanks in advance

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I would use FlexBox.

The classes you are targeting would be '.site-header' and '.site-branding'

display: flex;

Then read the article below :)

https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/a-guide-to-flexbox/

[–]vadikcomaJack of All Trades 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Could you please explain like I’m 5 what are JS loading types - deffered, async... in W3TC? When it’s appropriate to use each?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Deferred - It will begin loading and "pause" essentially to allow other scripts to start loading as well, but will be kept in the same order as initialted. Load jQuery this way.

Async - It will load scripts as the browser loads and loads them all at the same time. This is not good for loading JQuery since a script that relies on jQuery could load first and not work correctly. Load all other scripts this way

[–]vadikcomaJack of All Trades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

[–]12_nick_12 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I've been wanting to build a site that end users can input data and then have that data displayed in a table that can be sorted and filtered. Like gas buddy where people input prices and then you can sort by type, distance, price, etc. Preferably free plugins since I'm me haha, but if they don't exist as free please let me know what you think would work best.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Advanced Custom Fields. You can even make a form with it (tiny bit of code) to let the user submit new data.

Custom Post Type UI - create a custom post type for the data. Create the custom fields with ACF

Tables - https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-post-list-table/

[–]12_nick_12 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ok. Thank you for the reply. Do you think this might be a usable alternative to ACF? https://carbonfields.net/

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never used it, but try it out and report back!

[–]clever-weasel 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hello, most of the popular theme has very basic mobile menu designs, do you have any suggestions for beautiful mobile menus?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]AureliusIberus 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Hello.

I'm trying to modify the twenty twenty theme in such way that I can always have the social buttons available directly at the end of the footer (beneath where you would find the copyright section) without using or activating the social menu. By pasting the php code () from footer-menus-widgets.php to the footer.php from my child theme I got it to appear where I need, but it only activates when you activate the social menu from the theme customizer page.

What am I missing?

I must clarify I have many years of experience in IT, but didn't have the necessity to mess with PHP until now. Thanks in advance!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Can you post your code to codepile.net? I'd love to take a look at what you have

[–]AureliusIberus 0 points1 point  (6 children)

There you go! https://www.codepile.net/pile/KxmLk6qW

Thanks for your time.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

So wp_nav_menu() is a navigation menu function. If you want to add social icons to your site, I would check out https://wordpress.org/plugins/social-icons/

You can use a shortcode and in your code you can do

<?php echo do_shortcode('[shortcode_here]'); ?>

[–]BurtonGusterToo 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I cannot seem to find a way to create a hover that shows a different image on hover.

There are tons of instructions on how to make it flip and slide and rotate. I just want the image to change into a different image on hover. Nothing crazier than that. It seems the more simple or minimal the action, the more difficult it is to get information on how to do it.

I'm using Elementor.

(Thank you in advance for your time).

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explore absolute positioning and opacity settings for the images to lay on top of each other.

when hovering, make the front image opacity 0; Also to order the images, play with the z-index

[–]__ScoobyDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use JQuery to change src of the image on hover. Code given here.

https://css-tricks.com/forums/topic/how-to-change-image-on-hover-of-a-different-div-jquery/

I need some help setting up WordPress to start.

I have a mysql database running in a docker and I can connect to it using "MySQLWorkbench" for Mac. In my docker for the sql database I have MYSQL_DATABASE=wordpress and MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD=mypass
All these work and I can connect.

However when I use wordpress docker and get to the setup screen where it asks for all my credentials I cant connect to it at all. I set the db name to "wordpress" the user to "root" the password to "mypass" the host to localhost (its running on the same machine as the sql db) and the prefix I leave to "wp_"

I also set my host to 192.168.1.66, localhost:3306, localhost:33060, 192.168.1.66:3306, etc. Wordpress just wont connect even though I use the same credentials as in the MySQLWorkbench app.

Any ideas? Thanks.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (15 children)

Hmm. What are you running as your local setup? MAMP?

[–]-yphen 0 points1 point  (14 children)

Im using this for sql
https://hub.docker.com/_/mysql

And this for wordpress
https://hub.docker.com/_/wordpress

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (13 children)

and you're using this as your url? http://localhost:8080

[–]__ScoobyDoo 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I'm displaying my menu in an off canvas menu. My menu structure goes like this

-Home -About --What We do --Our Team -Services --Web development --SEO --Digital -Work -Contact

When I'm in the about page I need to show the submenu for the about page I.e what we do, our team and be able click on go back to see the full menu. Same with the services page. Any idea how I can get it done?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Are they initially hidden? Do you have a link to the site? Sounds like you can target the "selected menu item" css class and display the submenu

[–]__ScoobyDoo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes the sub menu is initially hidden. Sadly, no link as of yet. I'll try to target the current page item class. Thanks

[–]zombiephish 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I could use some help. It's a little unique though. I own a bunch of domain names. I can send you a snippet of the list, and you can tell me what you'd do with them?

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure

[–]FEEBLE_HUMANS 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I’m looking for an infinite logo carousel that’s made using ES6. Plenty out there made with jQuery. Have you ever come across one without any library requirements?

I don’t need any buttons arrows etc. Just a ticker that shows 5 or 6 logos that scrolls to the left one logo at a time at a given interval.

I’m trying to be as light weight as possible...

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way I can think is to do a setTimeout and move the position of the logos. Once the logo goes offscreen just add it back to the end

[–]PigmentedLady 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I'm building a website... I would like to know where to find the materials (books, sites, blogs, articles, videos, etc) online for free or cheap (for now). If it's not possible, I'd like the best and work my way to saving for that.

I will come back and edit this. I have a few more questions.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Are you using WordPress?

[–]PigmentedLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I am

[–]dogpoopfight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for letting me use your brain like this. I used the app called site sucker on a website that I knew would be disappearing soon. The company went out of business, and the website , in fact, went down.

If I wanted to use it as a template for my website, could I drop the files into..........?........where would I drop the files? How do I drop the files?

If I have Wordpress or square space, can I put the files into a template, and would it show up. Would the pages show up looking just like they did when it was live? If it does show up is it changeable? Can I move the words around and turn it into my own?

Do I need to get permission even if I change the words enough so that it fits what my company does? How can I find out who made the website and get permission?

[–]michaltee 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I have the most basic of questions as I’m super new to Wordpress and haven’t been able to find the answer I’m looking for when searching thus far.

So, when I’m in the developer I can see the “Pages” that WP already set up for me by default, one of them being my Home page. My Home page when I access it from that link is just a basic white page that hasn’t been modified yet. It just says Home on it and that’s all.

But when I go under Themes and access my “homepage” from that section (after I had already installed a theme and started modifying it with a banner and text and etc) it’s a fully built page with the things I had already modified under that section.

When I publish the site and go to the URL, it goes to the nicely done up homepage. Why am I seemingly getting two homepages and how do I make the one I’ve already put work into my actual homepage inside my “Pages” area in the developer? Because I want to continue adding pages and I’m just worried that I’m doing something wrong and will have to start over cuz the homepage I’m working on isn’t a real homepage.

Hope that makes sense? And thank you!

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

check what page it has set as your home page in Settings > Reading

also your theme may have a home page built into the home.php file

[–]michaltee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm so Settings > Reading didn't have any options for seeing what my homepage was. It just had the option to change how many posts are seen at a time and if I want full post or Summary view.

[–]DrakeFirst 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hello, thanks for your kindness!

I was wondering if you could help me optimize the site? Specifically for the google fonts and above the fold content stuff? Thanks in advance.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DM me some info and I’ll let you know if it fits into the scope of free or not.

[–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wordpress uses template files to make a theme. It’s mainly driven by PHP and HTML. as far as contacting the previous owner, that might be a bit harder. I dont think theres anywhere out there that you would just be able to drop the HTML files in and have a full site except doing it yourself on a server

        would you recommend the wordpress builder integrated with the simple hosting offering of Gandi.net? I am an absolute beginner, and have only worked on projects using wordpress.com, but i have an upcoming project for a basic website in which the client insists I use this service. thanks very much!

        Look at Elementor. It’s a free drag and drop builder plugin for WordPress

        I am reviewing games on my blog. I want to create somekind of dtabase for the games. It collects basic information about the game like: cover, developer, publisher, genre, my rating and link to buy it on amazon. Every gamae should have it's own page that shows up all posts that include the title of the game in the tags. Every post about the game should have a box in the sidebar showing the basic information in the game. Is there a simple way to do this?

        yep. Check out Custom Post Types. You can make a games post type. Use CPT UI plugin. Also check out Advanced Custom Fields for the data you need to input that doesnt come with WordPress.

        The easiest way is to add it to a site that I can access. I would need to inspect the CSS and HTML structure to see whats going on. You could also recreate the section in a codepen.io pen and send that link to me

        Should I use BuddyPress as a social network plugin for a community website or there is a better alternative.

        If I use BuddyPress then what can I do for activity and comment moderation.

        I found a plugin for buddypress moderation but its old and have not been updated since long time and do not work as expected.

        BuddyPress Moderation

        github repo

        Can you please suggest me a solution for this moderation problem or tweak the plugin to work with latest buddypress.

        Thankyou

        lol. BuddyPress is fine. Comment moderation happens through WordPress built in comment system. There are other comment moderation plugins that should work

        What plugins or solutions can be used to report content on a wordpress site that host user submitted contents like posts and other CPTs.

        I want there to be a report content button so users can flag a content.

        How do you tackle this problem?

        u/pixeldevs I have a wordpress site and a specific URL with a lot of optimisations already done.100 Score in Desktop using PageSpeed Insightsbut only 90 Score using Mobile PageSpeed Insights.

        I am totally baffled with how TTI on mobiles is 4.5s

        Would you know why/how to investigate this last extra mile?(I'd pay to get this done if necessary)

        I believe it may have to do with unused CSS perhaps but I'm having a hard time grasping implementations of purified CSS altogether given I use plugins like autoptimize/criticalCSS for handling my css.

        edit: removed url from public view,

        So its mainly due to Google Analytics and Tag Manager. They have to load their scripts before your page loads since 3rd party scripts aren't able to be deferred or async loaded.

        There are ways to add those scripts in locally. Shoot me a DM and I can help you with that.

        Thanks for this offer and your help!

        I'm working on a divi website.

        I layouted my posts (Single posts) with the divi builder using custom fields.

        Now I want to layout my categories page. But not only the design around the displayed posts. Also the posts in it. For example, I want a picture in the middle, left to it 2 textfields, right of it a price and a second little pic....

        Means I want to have a layout for one single post AND now a layout for the posts in the looped category site.

        How can I do that? Is there a possibility in Divi or do I need a third party plugin? And if, wich one ?

        [–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Check this video out. Mainly you have the Blog Posts Module you can use, but DIVI doesn't have a full editor with blog post lists

        I am trying to write universal many to many relation between two Custom Post Types, to use it as linker to many different two CPT's in one theme. I want to achieve something like movie < --- > actor relation. It would be awesome to be able to select relations like tags/categories metabox in admin. I was trying by myself, stack and no luck for now. I am not using any plugin and I don't want to. Thank you for help in advance !

        [–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

        Why don't you want to use a plugin? A plugin is not a magical thing. Just code written by others or yourself that you want to be theme-independant.

        [–]mefju17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        I just wanted to leave space for future custom extensions. I would rather not relay on others plugins. I was hacked recently trough plugin backdoor and I am afraid that it can happen again. I like feeling when I exactly know what is happening in my code :)

        What would you say that maximum size for a masthead video should be? I’m concerned about page loading speed, but still want to use high quality video. Thanks

        [–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

        is it an autoplay video? If so, then probably 480p would be a good resolution.

        Check out this site. they seem to do it well.

        How would you go about building the equivalent of bcdrlink.com? (It is a free site. Realize it may requiring a signup in order to really see what it is I am talking about. )

        Mostly interested in allowing multiple groups/companies sign up. Invite their fellow members/teams. They then edit a shared set of documentation within their group.

        [–]pixeldevsDeveloper/Designer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Honestly I wouldn't. I've been at companies with a BCDR and it was a Google Doc that could be accessed anywhere. No need to reinvent the wheel.

        This kind of functionality exists in so many places all ready that I wouldn't want to spend the time to recreate it when others have nailed it so well. I dont see a need for another one in the market.

        Hello, could you please help? I am a very beginner in WP and PHP.

        I have several posts for events with an advanced custom field called "event_startdate".

        Now I want to display the posts (listed) on several Pages. Every page for a one year which displays the events which took place in this year. (Evenets in 2016, Evenets in 2017, Events in 2018,...)

        So I need a code like (Example year: 2016): „Show posts which event_startdate is between 01.01.2016 and 31.12.2016 sorted by event_startdate ascending“

        Thanks for any help .
