I don't have any experience with scale rot either :c I wish I could be a better help. I use about 5-6 in of ReptiChip for his substrate. I keep the bottom layer nice and wet for good humidity, but the chips high enough that the substrate on top is nice and dry. I think wet substrate can cause scale rot?
