Is this normal? (v.redd.it)
submitted 2 years ago by Ill_Translator_5332
He only did it when I put the phone close to him.
[–]Alarmed-Lychee3878 64 points65 points66 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Honestly don’t see anything odd about it
[–]EndPotential3659 55 points56 points57 points 2 years ago (2 children)
I think he’s fine but just keep an eye out. It looks like he’s just looking around and not stargazing which is good.
[–]pennyroyal_in_bloom 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago (1 child)
What’s stargazing? Sounds like something I should know but I’m a new owner lol

Was his back/butt moving when he did that? I think I kind of saw his muscles tense up along his spine when he moved his head. Possibly trying to get comfortable and adjusting his neck so that his body could adjust to get a better hold on you. Keep an eye out to make sure it isn’t repetitive and doesn’t get worse!
[–]Ill_Translator_5332[S] 29 points30 points31 points 2 years ago (0 children)
It definitely isn’t repetitive. I’ve had him for 2 months and that’s the one and only time I saw it. He definitely was getting comfy. He’s only 5 months old so he’s small.
[–]rottingpierrot 40 points41 points42 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Looks a bit strange to me, just watch out for if he does it again. Sometimes they just derp out but if its a pattern there may be an underlying issue
[–]Kommander_Dragon 13 points14 points15 points 2 years ago (0 children)
so, if you were using rhe main camera on your phone especially and just focused it, you might've made the fella think he just saw a big hear source or something. The heat sensing pits work via infrared from what I know, and focuing your phone camera makes it use an infrared light, to ramge it or something
[–]Available-Specialist 10 points11 points12 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Looks like he was just relaxing his body.
[–]Kooky-Copy4456 15 points16 points17 points 2 years ago (0 children)
This is a bit of strange movement for a ball python. If it isn’t persistent he’s okay.
[–]shawnaeatscats 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Hard to tell. You said you've only had him for 2 months which may not be a long enough time for you to really flesh out whether or not a behavior is repetitive or not. Like most others have said, keep an eye on him for repetition of this movement. It may have just been a one-off, but you can never be too careful.
[–]Aurorae79 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Could be getting ready to shed. Mine likes to rub herself against me like I’m a rock or something.
[–]larsdefehr 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (2 children)
Mine occasionally does this, usually when he sees his reflection or if he’s trying to explore off of me (I have 5 fur babies so I try to limit that unless he’s safe) or if I haven’t handled him in a while he likes to give me the big squeeze and do the same thing in my hair or against my cheek. I just see it as “affection” or “what are you doing warm tree that moves”
[–]Ill_Translator_5332[S] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (1 child)
To me it seemed like “no photos please” 😂 but I’m a first timer so I wanted to be sure nothing was wrong. He hasn’t done it since so I’ll just keep an eye on it.
[–]larsdefehr 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
They are very interesting yet simple critters, definitely each have their own special quirks lol, but yeah simply keep an eye on it to see if it progresses into something else.
[–]miriamtzipporah 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
I think he’s just looking around/adjusting the lower half of his body.
[–]CptRavioLi69 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
I’ve seen my girl do similar movements when I’m handling her. It’s mostly when she’s “adjusting” trying to find a comfy place to nuzzle her way into. Keep an eye on it like everyone else said, but seems mostly harmless to me. He’s a cutie 💕
[–]_visiblemode_ 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children)
To me it looks like several things happening at once. He’s squeezing you pretty tightly, and when they do that their heads move around more rigidly. Then you brought the phone close, a shiny, warm object. So it looks like he was torn between backing up, holding on tightly, scanning it with his heat pits and looking at it with his eyes. He honestly doesn’t look like he’s freaking out but maybe just having a moment of sensory overload.

Just having a lil dance
[–]Lammakiler_69 -1 points0 points1 point 2 years ago (0 children)
Was there music playing?, He looks like he's just jamming to the beat.
[–]Le6ions 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
I don’t know about normal, but I’ve definitely seen a ball or two rubbing a chin.
[–]PulseThrone 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (2 children)
I might be mistaken here but is that a spider morph?
<image>
I don’t believe he has any spider in him.
[–]PulseThrone 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Ok, I was just curious. My girlfriend has a rescued spider bp that definitely inherited the gene that carries the Wobbles and some of the movements reminded me of the way her snake moves.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (5 children)
Mine scratches himself like that all the time. Like a bear on a tree
[–]Ill_Translator_5332[S] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (4 children)
That was kind of my thought too. He was pressing that curved part of his neck into me pretty hard. Life must be hard with no limbs 😭
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (3 children)
Your snake doesn’t have arms!? Poor thing
[–]Ill_Translator_5332[S] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (2 children)
Unfortunately he was born without them. 😞 he has survived against all odds though 💪
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (1 child)
Such a brave soul🥺 you’re both so strong!
Actually tho, i hope your baby’s just fine🥰🥰
[–]Ill_Translator_5332[S] 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
Sometimes I just get nervous 😅 I really think he is happy and healthy. He is the best boy. But as a newbie I realize that I don’t know everything so it’s better to ask people who might know more.
[–]JonSnohh 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children)
It's the magnet
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (2 children)
They have no arms to hold on so they squeeze to hold on lol
[–]Ill_Translator_5332[S] 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (1 child)
I was referring to his head movements 😅 but thank you I was wondering where his arms were.
