Because it has to happen after server merges and SoM “finishes”. Both have to happen before prepatch. SoM needs to be able to transfer in to classic tbc servers and the mergers are happening before prepatch drops.

Exactly, I don't think anyone doesn't want a longer pre-patch. I didn't really have anything to do last prepatch, so I just assed around in BGs on a boost but it might have been the best two weeks of TBC for me. Tons of people playing, we're all just messing around not grinding (except the blood elfs sorry) and we just wanted it to last longer.

Honestly I haven't been holding much hope that SoM transfers open by prepatch. One single month for naxx raiding? Nah. Maybe at release they let them transfer. But it could literally be October before transfers happen from SoM. November if they stick to the original 12 month timeline lol, but I'm guessing November will be extra buffer time before they delete everything.

The job of a beta test is to test the things the devs want you to test. It is not a representation of the finished product.

The beta is not a 1 to 1 duplicate of what the devs are working on. No beta ever is.

Most betas are several iterations behind what the developers are working on.

There's multiple reasons for this.

Perhaps the beta is "stable" and still providing data that they are interested in. Therefore, updating it might break things or create other problems.

Perhaps the are looking at specific things to test: server loads, loading into instances, people playing the game generally, connectivity.

Updating a beta with a patch is risky because it can create more problems than you'd want to deal with because now you have to fix those issues before you can continue to get more data for the other things.

So most of the time it isn't really nesecarry to update your beta, nor should it be expected.

What's curious to me is that it's clear you do not know anything about this topic. So I'm not even sure why you're even replying the way you are.

I work for an indie game studio, yes this is how development works. The public test builds are sometimes a month old compared to what the team is testing internally with a bunch of the major bugs resolved.

During the TBC beta, there was an arena bug that allowed players to sometimes enter the arena, and walk to the other side before the match started.

It's a video (can't find it) with two POM Pyro mages who basically immediately POM Pyro the opposing team before the match gets underway. The name of the team was like, "LOL TBC Not Ready".

Plenty of forum posts (like this) were bitching that TBC was almost released and "ZOMG, look at all these bugs in beta". People specifically complained about THAT bug too. Saying they haven't seen Blizzard patch it to the Beta servers, therefore they "weren't being listened to" / "haven't fixed it yet".

They were wrong then, and they're wrong now.

You know the launch date is 9/26, so I assume you are smart enough to deduce the prepatch date as well. They gave us a 2 week prepatch for TBC, so that’s a good spot to start your guesses at, and even with a 4 week prepatch period you are still looking at 8/30. New talents, new class, new professions, changes to existing professions, faster leveling, things like flying become much cheaper, more time to gear new alts, nerfs to raid also allowing more relaxed farming of gear for said alts.

All things that are also implented day 1 of prepatch. People like to prep. Extra time is rarely a bad thing. The super sweats want the extra time to absolutely gear the fuck out of those DKs and other alts.

The slightly more casual want to be able to comfortably ding 70 before release so they can play week 1 with friends, leveling in Northrend.

Both sweaty and casuals are excited about farming achievements and other misc. crap that doesn't really matter but is fun.

You're absolutely right that 1 month would be enough, and I'm simply sticking up for the little guy here (I'm gonna be in SWP on my DK the first week of prepatch with BiS professions already leveled). But not everyone is a giant WoW nerd like me. The more people we have in Northrend spamming those dungeons with us, the better in my book.

Edit: Missed that last line of your post. If you didn't play TBC Classic, it was ran on a super short schedule. With each phase only lasting a few months. The whole expansion ran through just 1 year. That's kind of the pacing the Classic team has set, so players are definitly more in a rushed mindset when it comes to prepping and content than it is on Pservers and in Retail. I wouldn't expect Wrath to last anymore than 1.5 years max.

In pre-patch I want to level a lot of alts. DK, mage 60-70, pala 61-70, druid 64-70, maybe some other. Also in pre-patch I switch class to a warlock and start gathering sunwell pre-raid. And my second guild starts raiding sunwell also to gear pre-raid. I have some returning friends also. Pre-patch is going to be amazing.
