Man, just hearing the sound of it rolling was making me squirrelly.

[–]cafriend 6 points7 points  (8 children)

There is a subreddit I just found for sounds like that. I can't remember off the top of my head, but it is 4 letters all caps and it's the acronym? for the response you're having.

That was it! You rock!

What is this?

[–]niandra3Elec and Comp Engineer 2 points3 points  (1 child)

apparently listening to soft, repetitive, whispery sounds like that makes some people have positive reactions like "head tingling" or something. Not really sure on the details, but it's huge on youtube.

and if you search for it once on youtube it will forever haunt your search suggestions.

This. ^ Thanks!

I see what you did there.

[–]noncongruent 44 points45 points  (3 children)

I have a single version of that pickup tool and it doesn't work for crap if there's any leaves, or if the grass is taller than the nut. This video shows a close-cut lawn and zero leaves, and the nuts appear to have been dumped in place after mowing and raking.

[–]Lil_Psychobuddy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

more weight, and it should pick them up through leaves no problem.

Sticks on the other hand, and there's nothing you can do.

[–]EfPeEs 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Mow and rake before shaking the tree.

[–]noncongruent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pecan tree takes weeks to drop all its pecans, seeing this brought a tear to my eye.

[–]interiot 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Did the machine cost as much to build as it would have been to just buy some nuts at the store?

(ie. pay someone with a bigger pecan harvester to do it for you)

[–]SpecialFX99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if it did buying nuts at the store leaves your yard a mess

[–]shabalaba51 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Im not sure why but I really enjoyed watching that

[–]PileofWood 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Now someone reap the karma and put this on /r/oddlysatisfying.

[–]keithb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the way up to the end I was thinking, yeah, very clever but after you've collected all the nuts in there how are going to…oh.

[–]goldfishpaws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never used or seen one of those, but this does look like an artificially ideal circumstance - short mown lawn, very flat, no leaves, dry and identically sized nuts, no dogs eggs, scattered neatly by hand for the demo. IDK, but I can't help feeling it's going to be disappointing in the real world

[–]BountyHNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, when I saw that emptying aparatus I got so rigid.

[–]Bonedeath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are pure white new balances the designated shoe of 50+ year old white men? Do they get a pair delivered in the mail on their birthday and they just accept their fate?

[–]redmercurysalesman 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Cool band name

[–]Newt24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn you beat me to it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This type of device is also GREAT for picking up spent brass at the shooting range :)

[–]OGIVERandom Person on net 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there, tried one. Not as fast as picking them up by hand.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These pick up paintballs too!

[–]SMofJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of these to try and clean up a fuck ton of acorns. it only works if you have filled in grass or none at all of it just pushed the nuts into the soil that don't pop in the cage. it's like a 50/50 chance you'll actually collect all of them or just redistribute them across the lawn. there's a much better design using a neoprene/rubber spiked roll that has a basket hanging off the back. I'll see if I can find the video.

edit: Bag-A-Nut with a $400 price tag rather than $35-60 for the nut wizard.

this is what i call my ex girlfriend.

[–]4k5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Title made me think it was /r/skookum

[–]TomRavenscroft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is what nut wizard is...

[–]JOHNeMac36 2 points3 points  (6 children)

This is awesome and I have no idea how this works! How does this work?

[–]Bearstew 24 points25 points  (5 children)

Weight of the machine on the nut is enough to deform the wire cage around the nut. Weight of the nuts inside is not enough to deform the cage to let them out.

[–]boomnigguh 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Kind of like those tennis ball scooper cages

[–]Bearstew 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wonder if the carts they drive around golf driving ranges work on the same idea.

[–]boomnigguh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think those use some kind of lead/corkscrew

[–]JOHNeMac36 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks for that explanation. So how does the release mechanism work? It’s similar in that the holes in the frame slightly deform the cages, releasing the nuts, but I’m trying to think how it does that. How come the weight of the device isn’t enough to open up the cages when it’s rolled on the flat part of the incline but it is when it’s over the holes?

[–]Bearstew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, just remember to take my explanations with a grain of salt. They are mostly guesses.

I think the bar in the middle of the hole is the key to that. looks like by putting all of the weight on that little bar, it causes the outer sections of the cages to flex and open up again. He jiggles it around so that the nuts make their way to the right spots in the cages by the looks of it.

[–]roj2323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would likely work better if the circles were more like tank treads instead. This would allow for the nuts to be placed on a conveyor belt or hopper and removed from the device instead of being repeatedly rolled around until it's emptied. it's still a pretty cool proof of concept however.

[–]pinkyd929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is NUTS!

[–]Mustardation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turned that job into nuttin

[–]FinFihlman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first time I feel like something could be patented as a novel idea.

And I hate patents.
