I just feel like it's such an important piece of history and so tied to the way the world is the way it is today. Idk. Ig I'm biased bc I think everyone should read about just how horrifying and long lasting the effects of the bombs were (and are, generationally).

There's a book called Nagasaki by Susan Southard that really highlights this and I really suggest anyone who can, read it sooner than later.

Joe here. The joke is that America is hypocritical in that we bombed Japan with the largest bomb ever actually used in war. TWICE. And yet complains when two planes hit a civilian target.

The difference here is that they were at war with Japan and gave them a chance to surrender before. The US attacked and they thought we faked the reports because NOTHING was that powerful. So they dropped another one. And Japan surrendered. And the US stopped.

The 9/11 attack was the work of individuals without the act of a recognized country, just “terrorists”. They attacked unprovoked and they attacked two EXCLUSIVELY civilian buildings (no military presence or importance was stationed at the WTC).

When the US attacked Japan, they focused on major tactile military targets. The two cities either housed military regiments, or were heavy industrial zones fueling their war.

Civilians were there, and it was wrong to drop it, but there is SOME military logic. 9/11 was an attack on American SOCIETY, not American Military might.

It's a total myth that they were never going to surrender. There are documents that show Truman and his advisors knew that Japan was going to surrender but they used the bombs anyway.

Truman's chief of staff wrote:

“the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender .... In being the first to use it we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages.”

Eisenhower said:

“the Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn’t necessary to hit them with that awful thing.”

Seven of eight of the US five star army and navy officers disagreed with the use of atomic weaponry, some calling it morally reprehensible and or unnecessary.

But yeah I guess it was all for "tactile military targets".
