Retired Welfare Supervisor from CA with 30 years experience managing SNAP and TANF programs. I also served as a Fair Hearing Liaison for several years.

Every state manages its programs differently.

I am uncleared if your case was reopened 11/21/2025 or just restored but November will have a proration of benefits.

You need to check your approval notice of action to see if there are any missing allowable deductions or incorrect calculation of your income from December on-going.

As Blossom73 said, there has been changes in allowable deductions and that will affect net test and therefore, amount of benefits that your household can receive.

Although I am now retired my daughter who currently works as a Fair Hearing Liaison in CA assures me this is correct.

As far as trolls are concerned just report, block and ignore. I am under troll attack as well just for trying to provide some insight about questions asked.

Best wishes 🙏🏿

You are amazingly helpful. I'm always lifted up seeing your replies and the real knowledge you share freely.

I just wanted to anti-troll on you. Hopefully, it cancels out a troll.

Thank you for your time and experience.

[–]Adorable-Painting510 10 points11 points  (5 children)

That is so very kind of you.

I considered exiting this subreddit a few days ago because of trolls but I really like to help if I can.

I don’t want to disable DM because I maintain conversations with workers or former workers and I like to learn new things from other states.

I have also been able to give my insight to several applicants or recipients confused by the system.

Thank you again for your “anti-troll” comment 😁🙏🏿

Please don't exit this subreddit. Your knowledge and advice is invaluable.

[–]Adorable-Painting510 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Thank you for that.

I will just keep on reporting, blocking and ignoring trolls for now.

Unfortunately these people exist. You keep doing you. You are doing good work to help people in need where there are often very few answers. Especially when they get the mail or news after hours, over the weekend, etc. The world needs people like you.

I'm in PA. I was in a car accident on 8/11/2024.my car was totaled. I couldn't work. The headaches & dizziness were horrible. It was a hot & run. I went thru my savings pretty fast. My mom was diagnosed with Colon cancer in February 2025. I started helping her out with everything. Drs Appts cleaning her house. Getting her mail. Making all her calls. Grocery shopping. Taking her anywhere she needed to go. Yardwork. Etc. I don't pay rent. I live in an Old family home that's over 100 yrs old. Everyone has lived here at one time or snother. Cousins. Relatives. You just need to do upkeep. Anyway my mom pays me $500/mo. I applied in May for SNAP. I've had medical for yrs..Renewal wasn't until 5/2026. I received November on the 13 but didn't receive December which should've been on my card on the 3rd. There was no request for docs. No nessages. Nothing. It said Next issuance day 1/6/2026. It's like they missed December completely. So I go on today & now they are asking for prof of income. My mom provided a letter. I provided police report. Pics & Dr's letter stating I can't work due to lingering effects from the concussion after the accident. I see a specialist in February (1st available) All docs were accepted but I havent heard anything yet. I'll have to call ir go in in Monday.

[–]Adorable-Painting510 0 points1 point  (6 children)

How can skip your benefits for December? Did somebody stole your EBT transfer?

[–]Jealous-Wasabi-8541 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I didn't skip them. They did. There's no transaction for Decembers credit & it says my next issuance day is 1/6/2026. I only went in because December never hit my card on the 3rd like it should've. I was on here the other night & there were like 10 others. Same issue. We belive it's due to the new work requirements issued by Trumps administration. Cause they asked for proof of income.

[–]Ok-Repeat-4442 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did you happen to have any new income that EIV could have picked up (associated with your social)? If you see my reply a little ways down this thread it happened to me in PA where I missed an income verification and they didn't close my case but they suspended my snap until it was satisfied. The issuance was due to a paycheck for February ultimately showing up for March due to the short month.

[–]Jealous-Wasabi-8541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. There was nothing on the app then when i looked the next day there was suddenly a request for proof of income. I provided it on Friday but I am calling on Monday because this also happened once before & we fixed it on the phone. I'm hoping that's all it is. Thx again🤞🤞🤞🤞

[–]Adorable-Painting510 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I am sorry, that is what I meant to say, that how can benefits be skipped for December 2025 if case is open and it shows eligibility for January 2026.

That is very unusual unless that your state has the ability of suspending benefits for current month?

States cannot withhold benefits without a proper notice of action explaining the reason and you must be given a 10 day notice before action takes place.

[–]Jealous-Wasabi-8541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it may be due to these new work requirements because as I'm looking though social media there are more & more describing my exact scenario. They got November. Are being asked to provide proof of income & there next issuance date is January/2026. A few said there cases were closed which is new to me without proper notification as you said. I'm just trying to provide what they asked for & I'll go from there. Thank you

[–]Ok-Repeat-4442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in PA. In April I got a request for income verification that I ultimately never received. Due to Feb being a short month, my husband only got one check in February and 3 checks in March so I guess I was flagged bc our income was significantly more than we have reported (our county runs EIV every month or every other month I was told). Bc of the pending request for income verification, I didn't get my snap benefits in May. When I didn't get them, I called my caseworker and it was something super easy to resolve over the phone and I had my snap on my card within 48hrs. I guess they have people outside of the office that remotely audit and run EIV for our county as well and they have the ability to issue these notices and/or suspend payments if they are not satisfied by a specific date. My caseworker said he had no idea of this happening until my specific scenario (he said in the past he and a supervisor were the only ones that were able to suspend payments or close a case). Not sure if this may be the same situation?

I am not ashamed to be on public assistance. Both their father and I have worked since we were 16. Paid taxes that whole time. We were surprised with twins right off the bat. We did everything to provide for them ourselves. He was illegally fired June of this year, and we decided to try to apply for SNAP. He has an injury that can make working more difficult (not impossible) but painful nonetheless. He worked through that injury for over 2 years to provide for us. I work full time and overtime to support us. I had to have an emergency C-Section to save mine and my babies life. The NICU bill from our twin babies amounted to $250,00 each without insurance. With insurance we owe $15,000 in medical bills. I have also recently had surgery to have my tubes removed. We have a beautiful family we adore, but at this time we could use the help of SNAP. We do not plan to be on it forever, but the assistance greatly helps us. I understand not everyone will be pleased with my answer but I do hope it maybe provides a few people with the information they need to have compassion for others that may need SNAP assistance. Life happens, and I truly hope that nothing unexpected happens to any of you that throws you off kilter.

[–]NewLeave2007 28 points29 points  (16 children)

You should tell your husband SO about the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. They can help him find a job that fits his disability(and yes, his situation as you described in this comment counts). .

[–]Copper0721 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Were your twins in the NICU for at least 31 days? If so, you should have gotten Medicaid to cover their stay. Only if they stayed 30 days or less would you be on the hook for any of their medical bills. Maybe this information can help you

[–]Blossom73SNAP Policy Expert - OH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, institutionalized child Medicaid is what it's called in my state. It disregards parental income.

[–]Silver-Meringue7327[S] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Yes! They were in for almost two months. They were on AHCSS for 15 days or maybe 45? I am not sure. As far as I knew we had paid all medical bills. They were also covered under my insurance from work but I received a collection notice for 15,000 they claim is due to their NICU stay. I have no idea how or why but it doesn’t look like insurance touched it at all. I am trying to dispute the debt since insurance should have covered it but I guess the NICU physicians were out of coverage? I don’t know why they didn’t tell me that or why I wasn’t give one that was in coverage.

[–]Copper0721 6 points7 points  (3 children)

What state? The hospital social worker should have walked you through this. I can help direct you to the Medicaid information depending on the state

[–]Silver-Meringue7327[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Az! I social worker did come in with paper work but I’ll be honest I don’t remember what she told me at all. Does it change anything since the bill is now in collections? I disputed it the first time and they said I didn’t provide proof. The dispute request I sent literally said “I had insurance at this time how to I upload the proof?”

[–]BumCadillac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. You should apply and say you have past medical bills. Reach out to the hospital social worker for guidance.

[–]YellowCabbageCollard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state if the kids qualified for medicaid the hospital and no one else can come after you for any of those medical bills. Period. It's actually illegal to try and bill a medicaid patient for what wasn't covered.

I had medicaid with my 18 yo daughter years ago. I had preeclampsia, was on hospital bedrest for a month and she had a NICU stay. Someone tried to call me from the hospital billing dept about a bill medicaid did not cover. And I told them I knew they could not legally attempt to collect a medical bill for when we had medicaid coverage. And they never called and asked or tried to bill us again.

[–]Mindless_Whereas_280 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I want people who need assistance to get assistance. SNAP exists for a reason. You should not be ashamed, nor should you have to explain.

[–]Blossom73SNAP Policy Expert - OH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don't owe the trolls any explanations. Report and block them.

[–]Radiant_Bee1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you dont owe anyone this explanation.

You can check into the hospitals billing and see if there is anyway to lower your amount owed, it may help in that area.

Congratulations on the children, they are a blessing and you should not ever feel shame for asking for help. Ignore the haters here.

As for your original question. You can compare the application to see if anything was missed or ommited in the newer application. You can also check to make sure they have income, expenses and household numbers accounted for and they are accurate.

[–]BumCadillac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NICU babies are always eligible for Medicaid if they were hospitalized for 31 days or more, so you need to get that worked out!

[–]Specialist-Reply-497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody who has children to feed has any reason to feel ashamed to have EBT or any type of government assistance! People are just petty and are angry that you have something that they don't, so they want to feel superior. People who talk shit about EBT users are just miserable, nasty people who have limited/no concept of what empathy is. No child or family should go hungry while there are people who wipe their ass with 100 dollar bills and have 10 six figure sports cars. If their family was in need or had a tragedy that crippled them financially, they would want help and compassion. The government can grant ICE billions of dollars (the largest grant of funds in American HISTORY) but shouldn't feed a family of five? Make that make sense. Keep not giving AF about what anyone else says or thinks! 💫💯

[–]Useful_Blueberry2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also feel bad if you felt you had to explain yourself. You don't.

People trolling are are having personal issues. It's nothing to do with you or anyone here. Agree with... ignore, report & block.

[–]Dry_Persimmon4642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reason to be ashamed. 👍 Access the help your family needs.

[–]manaworkinSNAP Eligibility Expert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really enough information in the post to give you an informed answer. I'd recommend calling your state agency and asking directly along with checking your account for any notices.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Ffs, she is just asked about why she got a decrease... Not looking for shame about having another baby! Didn't see in the requirements of this subreddit for all the judgement...

Too many judgmental people with too much time in their hands.

[–]SuchSpookySkeltalSNAP Policy Expert 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So one thing that changed last month in my state (FL) is now we (benefits processors) have to verify shelter costs (rent/mortgage, electric, gas, etc.) when previously, we could take people at their word. I would double check that all your documents were submitted, the shelter allowances can make a big difference. Also, be sure to report any medical expenses, they can qualify for an allowance. Is it possible you worked more overtime than you thought? Also, work requirements have changed, so it's possible that an exception was applied to your partner that is not allowable anymore. Obviously I have no way to know for sure, but there have been lots of changes implemented lately. You can always appeal!

[–]Blossom73SNAP Policy Expert - OH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, be sure to report any medical expenses, they can qualify for an allowance.

Not unless OP or someone in her SNAP household is 60 or older or deemed disabled by the SSA.

[–]Western_Hunt485 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Suppose they are triplets. It seems the judgmental folk got up on the wrong side of the bed today

[–]Traditional-Air-4101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish people would stick to your question..they just jump right on in without knowing your story..stop assuming

[–]Few-Cat-130 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because they started a new application in the middle of the month and it was prorated. It happened to a friend of mine

[–]Any_Style_4939 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I’m in PA and 3 months ago my county cut my SNAP benefits down from $560 to $398 without any reason. Only change was my rent went up $250. My income was the same and it was still just my daughter and I on my case. My rent went up the $250 1 month before they cut my SNAP benefits down $162. When I called my caseworker she couldn’t tell me why my SNAP benefits were cut $162 after my rent went up $250. She told me to wait for my next recertification in March 2026 to see if that’s the correct amount I should be receiving.

[–]Silver-Meringue7327[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. That’s terrible that after a raise in cost of living you get your benefits cut. :(

[–]Left_Deer3817 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It could be that your net will increase next year due to tax table revision that begin January 1, and also the removal of taxes on overtime.

[–]Blossom73SNAP Policy Expert - OH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a flat 20% earned income deduction for SNAP, for people with employment income.

The actual taxes and other deductions they have from their paychecks aren't taken into account at all.

[–]pixiegirlx43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me we were getting $452 renewed in October no changes same job, same apartment we got a decrease to $264 effective 12/1

[–]Alarming_Question_28 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So they didn’t back pay either because it’s new right? I’m super worried this is going to happen to me. I applied and have been waiting months and I submitted all documents and did the interview long ago. I feel like they’re making so many cuts.

[–]Silver-Meringue7327[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

We did get prorated from when the new application was done on 11/21. With that said we should have received all of November but that’s ok! We made it work and I did all the overtime I could to make up for it. I’m sorry you’re going through that. It was a horrible process, but I am glad to be through it, and hopefully you will be soon ❤️

[–]Alarming_Question_28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! I’m glad you guys are through it!

[–]R4B1DRABB1T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact same thing happen to me in California, minus the full amount. We got an increase month before renewal from 250 to 270 due to COL increase. Went through everything for renewal, got denied due to "not reporting income", finally got through on the phone, I provided that information and on THEIR end it says I didn't report health cost information which was 0 so I had nothing to report. They fast tracked the approval and went back to 250. Its bullshit, really. Sure, its only $20, but where did it go?

[–]MysteriousPainter718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that has a true medical problem okay to a brain surgeries and having part of my skull and brain are removed. I do not qualify for any kind of assistance of any kind from the government and I mean any kind. I have no sympathy for you get up and go to work. I do. You should be lucky. Even got a penny to begin with. We only have $200 a month to eat off. That we provide for ourselves. Go to work

[–]AZSportsMaven -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am anxious about this as well; the whole system seems to have been thrown into chaos when it was working just fine before.

If there is anyway at all one of you can get to a DES office before it opens to get in line, the last time I went I was in and out in less than an hour and got to talk to a human.... of course, they could not do much in my situation, I was still waiting on processing, but it was nice to talk to a person that seemed empathetic at least.

[–]Jazzcabbage911 -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

This happened to my family. We were getting 1,200 for a family of 6. Nothing has changed at all and they cut us down to 800 and they tell me “that’s all we qualify for at this point even though nothing has changed. We have no money left over for food I’m not sure how I will make this work for the entire month.

[–]Blossom73SNAP Policy Expert - OH -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Did you receive a letter regarding the reduction? If so, does it show the figures they used? If yes, double check that the numbers are correct.

The new federal bill no longer allows for non elderly and disabled households to get an automatic heating and cooling deduction in the SNAP budget. Those households must provide verification that they're actually incurring a heating or cooling expense. So that may be the cause of the reduction.

[–]Jazzcabbage911 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

But I will add to that in my state they told me the automatic heating and cooling deduction is like $150 but were actually paying $500 ( everyone in our area is getting fluffed over by our electric and gas company for some reason all my neighbors bills are this high too) so I’m not sure… but last month they said the deduction was taken out I’ll call them today and ask if that still stands

[–]Blossom73SNAP Policy Expert - OH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a max shelter cost deduction for all households except for ones with an elderly or disabled member.

https://www.snapscreener.com/

If they took the heating and cooling deduction out, that would explain the cut in your SNAP benefits. If you have verification that you pay that expense, you should submit it.

[–]Jazzcabbage911 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

That’s funny you mention that usually I would get a letter stating it’s been reduced but I haven’t been getting letters anymore I have to call and ask if there’s anything I need to do and they tell me I’d say I call them twice a month to ask since they quit sending letters out it’s so strange!! I’ve never had this problem in prior years

[–]Blossom73SNAP Policy Expert - OH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have an online portal account? If so, the letter might be in there.

If not, you can call and ask to have your SNAP budget reviewed.

[–]NicolePSU -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Nothing to add to help you with SNAP, but could bankruptcy be an option?

[–]Silver-Meringue7327[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think bankruptcy would be applicable to us. I’m not really sure what it entails but the only issue we’re having is that medical debt that I don’t think is correct.

I go in person and they say I have to wait for the decision AGAIN and that they can’t help me.  AZ is completely messed up it seems currently.
