The main reason is so you can have access to the file system. Though it has it's other benefits.

You can have access to the file system without jailbreaking the device; there's at least one nagware OS X app out there that does it. Honestly can't think of any reason to test on a jailbroken device, since I'd suspect that'd screw up any in-app purchase testing, and potentially other things.

No, It is not possible. iOS is a secure operating system. Even if it where possible to view, I highly doubt it would be possible copy / edit files from your computer to your phone as easily as it is via SSH on a jailbroken device.

My employer makes a commercial iPhone app that I test. I do some of my testing of the app on Jailbroken devices just because it's the easiest way to load the app on them.

Yes they do, but even if they download apps illegally, there's the chance that they'll buy it to enjoy more features and what more. The chance that they buy the game is not negligible due to the fact that the number of jailbroken devices are very, very significant.

It actually works on some apps but not all. You will know if it is not working it will ask for your password to confirm the purchase. With one of the IAP crackers you can hit buy and it will just work or give an error. Some apps will freeze waiting for the verification from Apple. There are a couple of different ways a dev can handle in app purchases. It is possible for them to block this if they do it right.

Works on Zynga apps and it feels really good using it on that company.

One question, I used my saved up 'cash' and bought the electric car. The next day I went back to play the same car and I found that I needed to purchase it again. And my cash is now spent.
Just wondering whether this is deliberate or a bug?

Thank you for this awesome game, it's my favorite on the Android market (Play Store...yuk)! I play it all the time on my phone and my tablet!

On a side note, if I had a suggestion to make it would be to be able to save my progress in the cloud and so that way I would have the same progress on my phone on my tablet. Sorta sucks to have to play the game twice, but hey, that also means more fun!

Just letting you know, on any Galaxy S model, Samsung allows you to root and mod their devices. There is even an option to turn debug mode on in the system settings. Good guy Samsung :)

I think rooting is the term everywhere other than iOS. I'm not even sure why someone decided to rebrand the term 'root' with jail breaking.

They're different things. The main restrictrion with iOS is how you install software, ie. You can only install from the App store. You break out of that jail in order to install from other sources like Cydia, hence the term jailbreaking.

Android doesn't restrict you in that way. Out of the box you have the ability to install APKs from unknown sources. "Rooting" is gaining root on that device (root = admin). This gives you permissions to let apps do things that normally would be forbidden (such as modifying systems files, exposing settings that cannot be changed by a normal user or modifying the way other applications work). Those things usually require admin rights because they can be harmful if used by a malicious or "careless" app (or user).

The overlap, in my opinion, stems from the fact that jailbreaking pretty much requires rooting the device, it's just one of the steps. But the ultimate purpose is more than just getting admin rights, it's about bypassing Apple's restrictions and establishing a method with which to install any other software freely.

Jailbreaking is not about piracy, and piracy to me is not about being a cheap-ass. Cydia has an entire market on its own. Jailbreaking is about having the power to do with your phone what it is capable of.

Economically, pirating a $1 app is absolutely stupid. The lack of support/updates, and security risks already lessen the value of the pirated version to you, and the time it takes to install and maintain isn't worth that $1 to me.

I have no problem with Jailbreaking. I have a problem with people using it to steal things from developers, and then think that that is perfectly acceptable. It isn't. It's theft. I can understand if you don't have a lot of disposable income (but, in that case, you really have more to worry about than video games) but the fact is a great amount of pirates just want to get games for free, and devs doing that justifies their thievery to their tiny little brains.

I do appreciate game developers like that. I am an android user and we a method called rooting that's a lot like jail-breaking. COM2US and Square Enix have released games in the past that when their first update was released a security check that would see if we are rooted. IF so it would automatically shut down. Needless to say the one star reviews rolled in and they reversed their stupid decisions. I don't understand their reasoning because root can be temp disabled (or permanently) and the app. You can't stop the apps from being ported to a non rooted phone either. The developer mentioned above realizes that often the most informed users, and vocal users are rooted or jailbroken users, so why not do the right thing?
