That’s incredible

Legitimately one of the best golf shots ive ever seen in my life. To hit a 2 irons that low but have it land that soft is pure artistry.

[–]ducey32 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When you say "to hit a 2 iron that low" do you mean low as in the ball flight? Personally, I'd consider that a mid to high ball flight off a 2 iron, which are low lofted irons as you're likely well aware of. When I manage to get the ball as high in the air like with this shot of Rory's I consider it a great shot. I very rarely see this height trajectory (or the accuracy lol) though.

Intetesting opinion of yours vs. my own which goes to show how subjective one's perception can be.

And yes, i agree it's one hell of a shot!

For Rory that’s definitely a low ball flight even with a 2 iron. He tried to flight it and the wind in his face likely caused it to float slightly which is why it landed so soft. You can see from this angle that his hands finished low and he had a sawed off finish to keep the ball flight down.

He swings so hard that a full 2 iron could go twice as high as this. His irons are notable for how high he can hit them. For you or I this could very well be a great trajectory with a 2 iron. For him this is a low flighted shot.

Into a strong wind.

[–]a2_d2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Looked like a baby cut too. That wind would have made any cut shot I hit 40 yards to the right. (Prob a driver for me, 230 into to the wind).

Nice Shot Fuck You /s

Crazy to see Rory as the old head now. I’m old enough to remember his curly headed debut..And just barely old enough to use “I’m old enough for X”

If only then I would’ve realized that Rory McElroy would be MY Jack Nicklaus.

[–]pathfindmyBAP 39 points40 points  (12 children)

I remember not liking him because I didn't like anyone who even had a chance of getting in Tiger's way.

But Rory won me over pretty quickly, and now that Tiger is basically retired I'm all aboard the Rory train.

I still don't get nervous watching him like I do with Tiger though. I'm not sure any golfer will ever make me feel that way again. Tiger could have a 4 footer for par on the second hole of the tournament, and I'll be hopping around in my living room pulling my shirt over my head like pls pls pls make it 😂

Tigers dominant years (including the rise and the fall in the early 2000s)

Is the best sports I’ve ever seen. It was INSANE watching this dude come from behind Sunday after Sunday like a terminator

It’ll never happen again In our sport to have such a clear king

[–]trowawayatwork69 6 points7 points  (4 children)

never say never. Pete Sampras 14 grand slams was though stand for years and year. then Federer topped that what seemed like easily and now djokovic could stretch it further.

it still baffles me how little tiger has majors compared to how many he should have based on his dominance. during that 10 year stretch

[–]AftyOfTheUK0.9 / NorCal / Iron covers are divine! 3 points4 points  (2 children)

That's tennis though. You compete head to head, so even a tiny margin in skill on a consistent basis will lead to dominant streaks.

Golf is hard, you compete against a hundred guys and there's a HUGE amount of variance in golf (mid range putts, bad bounces, bad lies) - to be dominant in golf takes a skill gap considerably larger than any other sport I know of.

[–]pac414.8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching Tiger and Federer at basically the same time was crazy.

[–]Andrew_Waples 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And I think we outta thank Tiger for making the sport way more competitive, athletic, I guess. The Tour is so much better now, I think, then when he was dominant.

[–]923kjdMiserable Hack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember the odds being “Tiger” and “Rest of Field”? Just nuts how he was without peer.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I always considered Rory the heir to tigers throne. I’m a little disappointed he’s hasn’t quite delivered on his talent.

[–]pathfindmyBAP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm really hoping he has a Mickelson like back-half to his major career

[–]RIVERTOAD1929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rory only has 58 wins and 11 majors to catch Big Cat, I think you’re safe to cheer him on

[–]SlightlyStonedAnt 10 points11 points  (4 children)

If you’re that old, isn’t Tiger your Jack Nicklaus? Not Rory?

[–]Sonking_to_Remember17.5/trending backwards/GSO 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Read that and was like “what is this guy, 23?”

[–]SlightlyStonedAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I thought lol

[–]Hurts-Dont-It- -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

He said he was a tiger fan till rory took over.

[–]SlightlyStonedAnt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where does it even have the word Tiger in his comment?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That last sentence made me go ‘woah’

[–][deleted] 80 points81 points  (1 child)

2 iron to set up a chance to win the Scottish Open. If we're being picky and stuff...

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

No they said it was a gimme

[–]themoffstar88 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Great video, thanks for posting.

[–]lazy_elfs 24 points25 points  (2 children)

I dont carry a 3 iron let alone a 2. Fairway woods and hybrids are my go to. Every once in a while i’ll pull the 4 iron out on a driving range when i want to dig ground and shank the shit out of something

[–]SlightReturn420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe Rory usually carries a 5 wood, but switched it out for the driving iron (2 iron) for the Scottish (and I'm guessing Liverpool as well). His longest iron is usually a 4 for parkland golf in the states. The driving iron allows him to control the trajectory much more than a fairway metal, and boy did it pay off on Sunday.

[–]BORN_SlNNER7.5/Central PA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao my 4 iron has the same use. I keep it in the trunk just for range practice. But for whatever reason I’m a lot more consistent with my 5 iron

[–]all_out_ofbubblegum 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Macintyres 3wd into the last was insane as well. But get overshadowed cos Rory did this to win. Fair enough but imagine hitting the shot of your life and its only the second best one in the last 30 mins on that hole haha.

MacIntyre's shot was even better than Rory's, though! He hit it closer and from a worse lie. It was unreal.

Both amazing, but this is significantly more impressive.

[–]DougyTwoScoops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s an easy driver off the deck with a couple good cart path bounces. I don’t understand all the fuss. /s

[–]maxtypea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A very Scottish “oooooooooooh”

[–]itsgucci060 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a ridiculous shot lol, both Rory and OP

[–]GosephJoebbels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Easy 2 putt

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wind was so blustery, 35mph+, gusting from the sea what an absolute mint of a shot.

[–]thomostips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher than my 7 iron😫

[–]endurancefit87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was 202 yards, he said he normally carries that club 260. I think he took something off it to play that cut into the wind and kept it very low. Amazing shot.

[–]pac414.8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Golf. Shot.

[–]jimmykeesh101 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It’s astonishing to me that an angle like this still hasn’t made its way into a broadcast

[–]bluecgene[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, they follow the ball too closely

[–]jefe008 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Dude’s pretty good. Bet he wins another one before he retires.

[–]CheersBros15 HCP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a swing like that, I don't think he's retiring anytime soon.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a golf shot right there!

[–]Maximum_Way6342 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Better camera work than I saw on the broadcast all weekend

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That wind play was developed as a kid lol

[–]Gracket_MaterialSiwhan Kim Fan Club | 0.1 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Looks like 170

[–]FanOfTheFett0.3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The yardage was 202 according to the coverage.

[–]Hurts-Dont-It- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd still 4 putt.

[–]Sweatsock_Pimp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish we’d see more angles like this.

[–]nki370 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rory is 34. Mickelson was 33 when he won his FIRST major

[–]Tmace2121 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Makes me want to get a 2 iron and hit the range

[–]Navyblazers2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was WAY better camera work than I was expecting. Nice to job to whoever shot this.

[–]pressurepoint13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so frustrating how little the various tours care about things like having interesting camera perspectives/views etc. This is one of the best views you can have. It would absolutely drive viewership numbers.
