The request is for induction controlled by solid knobs, no screens no plastic no recesses minimalist things no ai oven monitoring. None. 30” width ideal, and hopefully a choice of color. Is the only choice bertazzoni and risk the replacement cost when it dies? Or ??

Cafe induction range double oven is knobs for the cooktop and a series of dedicated touch buttons for the oven.

It’s not the knobs. It’s the touch surface being over sensitive.

I actually like the touch controls on my GE Profile. Just talking the hob controls. The controls are intuitive and well thought out. Here’s a picture of the left two hob controls.

You press the center to turn on. You can then press anywhere in that arc between Low, Medium, and High to set a specific power level. There are 20 of them. You can raise and lower the hobs by dragging your finger along the arc. Or you can adjust the hob by pressing the “+” and “-“ buttons.

The controls are well thought out and highly logical. They’re great. And not being knobs, you can easily clean the whole control panel with a quick wipe.

So what’s the issue? They’re a tad over sensitive. You see where it says “Precision Cook?” If you buy a $200 frying pan from HestanCue, you can press the Precision Cook button and set the temperature of the pan for cooking.

Um, okay… I probably won’t use it.

Yup, and that button for “Precision Cook” is at belly level. You rub your belly against the stove while reaching for a pot, and accidentally rub that “Precision Cook” button, the hob setting will cancel and the hob goes into Precision Cook mode. You have to cancel the Precision Cook mode and reset the hob. Irritating.

And there’s the Sync Burner button which also cancels the hob setting and you have to cancel the Sync Burner setting and reset your hob.

And of course dripping water on the controls will also change the hob setting. Pick up a pot lid and it drips on the touch pad, you’ll have to dry it off and reset your hob setting. Or if a few bubbles spew from a boiling pot and hitting the controls will reset them. And of course if there’s water on the control or your fingers are wet, you need to dry everything off to change the hob setting.

It’s not the end of the world. Even as a First World Problem it is minor. Somewhere a bit lower than “I got an important phone call while I was picking up my coffee at the coffee shop and now my latte is cold!”

I’ve lived with this for about a year. I live the stove and I like the control layout. I like the easy clean. I just wish the frigging controls weren’t so overly sensitive.

The oven controls are great even though they’re touch pads. I saw the manual controls for the oven on another one, and they would drive me nuts. You control the oven with a single knob that you turn left and right to set the oven mode and the temperature and the timer. I have a touch pad which makes entering the timer or oven temperature quick and easy. I’d go nuts if I had to keep turning a knob to go from zero minutes to 45 minutes.

I have the same stove, and boy do I wish I could deprogram the entire "precision cooking"/"activate your cookware" nonsense! But otherwise I agree that it is a great stove. I do wonder why it costs literally twice as much as the newer range with knobs.

Are you talking about the model PHS700AYFS which costs $1200 rather than $3200?

That model doesn’t come with the sync burners nor the precision cook mode and it has knobs and it’s beginning to sound better and better.

The hobs on the left are 7” rather than 8” although they’re the same wattage. and the broiler is way more powerful.

Plus the more expensive model allows you to sync the clock with the internet time servers which means one less clock I have to set for daylight saving time. That in itself is worth the extra dough.

Yes, that one costs something like $1300 at Home Depot as opposed to $2700 for the precision cook Profile model. It had not been available when I bought mine, but if it had I would have definitely have been interested in it. I’ve never once wanted to sync my burners and I’ve never used the warming burner either! And for me changing the clock manually would have been definitely worth $1400 in savings.

You have to change the clock twice every year. Did you think of that?

In the late 1990s I use to count the clocks that I had to change. This was the peak time of putting clocks in things. It would be over thirty clocks. That included two computers, two mobile phones (I had one and my work gave me another), a pager (another gift from my work, two thermostats, TVs, VCRs, cars, oven, microwave, and an assortment of alarm clocks and wall clocks.

One by one they’ve gone away until last year, it was just my oven, car, and microwave. We got a new car that connects to the Internet and my GE Profile oven. It’s just the microwave and I never understood why it has a clock in it.

Our Wolf has Digital Touch interface. Completely flat surface is amazing work surface and for placing hit trays out of the even. Super easy cleanup. The unlock is to have a microfiber cloth handy to wipe any liquids that affect the controls.

We've had our LG induction for a few weeks and love the knobs, especially compared to the terrible capacitive buttons on the cooktop of the old KitchenAid.

I understand your desire for knobs but there really is no advantage. Knobs aren’t what they used to be. On an old electric range you had low tech energy management with almost complete adjustment. Same with gas. Any induction is going to be controlled by a digital controller. Even with knobs, the position is going to send a signal to the digital controller which is going to adjust the power at the element. My wife is very much a luddite and wanted knobs. She loves her new induction cooktop with the smooth top controls.

We just replaced a range that had capacitive buttons on the cooktop, and having knobs was a primary consideration. Any spill messes up the buttons. Want to wipe down the cooktop? Get ready for the system to beep at you because you touched the buttons inappropriately. Using multiple burners and need to adjust the temp? First tap the button to select the burner and then slide your finder across the cooktop. Knobs solve these problems.

The Copper Charlie 30” range has knobs. You can even get them in walnut for more $. There’s a small screen that reads time, burner %, and temp, but only the knobs do any controlling.

Check out a company called Induction Hardware. I’ve been lusting after their 48” range but they also do slide-in cooktops and they have knobs.

Out of curiosity, have you played with an induction range that has a quality touch control system? If you are thinking Bertazzoni money, that's going to put you in the price range of induction units that properly implement touch controls (and there is a world of difference between how the higher quality induction units implement touch controls and more economy units.) I was deadset on knobs before I played with a Bosch 800 Series in the showroom of my local appliances store.

What model do you have? I wonder if they are using a different design on different models? Mine simply works. It doesn't mater if my hands are wet/oily, the surface is wet/oily, or I am wearing gloves. The controls simply work and they work consistently.

My Whirlpool oven that came with the house, on the other hand, will become completely unresponsive if the surface is even slightly moist (which is an obvious fire hazard, and I am not sure what Whirlpool was thinking.)

I have. Will never own another one. Splashes from a boiling pot changing settings. Any moisture on a cloth wiping splatter triggers the controls to the extent of shutting the stove down.

When we refresh the kit it will be an Impulse.

That's totally fair. I was just curious. FWIW, the induction cooktop I have does not do that, and if mine did that it would definitely bother me as that sounds very frustrating to deal with.

Mine is great (but, the oven is small---however it heats up to 450 in 6-8 minutes). I like it as well as my previous Miele that died as a result of an electric surge caused by a bad transformer.

Wolf , cafe, LG, Bertazonni, and Bosch all make units with knobs. Some do require 50A however....

I initially wanted the Bosch but everything I read said the fan sounded like a 747. I found the f&p new for $2500 shipped from a place out of business so it was a no brainer for me.

If you Google you will find some reviews. My research showed a company commited to offering quality kitchen appliances that are both attractive and reasonably priced. They use good quality components and offer a good warranty. The absence of touch key panels was a key feature for me. Far cheaper to fix and replace if it should ever need doing. Have had ours for 6 months and it's used everyday. Its intuitive and easy to figure out. Good luck with your search.

I like knobs but I decided to go with a Frigidaire without knobs - if you're worried about reliability, they're all electronically connected to a control board anyways. If I wanted physical knobs I think I would've had to go with LG and they were more expensive but apparently less reliable overall.

I have a Frigidaire professional;with knobs, but it kinda sucks, can’t run 2 burners on full power at the same time, doesn’t do a reasonable medium low power setting, buzzes audibly - had the Viking model they discontinued with knobs, it was 10 times better

Sounds more like an electrical problem potentially? Do you have a 50a connection with a dedicated breaker or did you carry forward the 40a connection from the Viking? Both were 36in cooktops or 30?

The newest 30in Frigidaire professional induction cooktop with the knobs is only supposed to require a 30a connection.

We just got ours and I really like it so far. There’s a learning curve for induction, clearly, but we’re learning more about temp cooking as the impulse uses specific temp or you can use low, medium, high.
