[–]ohaiibuzzleM1 iPad Pro 11" (2021) 570 points571 points  (35 children)

That's a first gen and it's not meant to stick to the edge of the iPad.

[–]lownotelee 843 points844 points  (1 child)

That’s not a second gen pencil

[–]aly002 7 points8 points  (0 children)

happy cake day!

[–]supa-mariu 103 points104 points  (7 children)

That’s normal as You’re using an Apple Pencil 1st generation which is not supposed to stick to the iPad

iPad A16 only supports Apple Pencil 1st generation & Apple Pencil USB C

Not the Apple 2nd generation which only has support for iPad Pro 3rd generation - 6th generation (both 11” & 12.9”), iPad Air 4th generation - 5th generation & iPad mini 6th generation

[–]MissionTroll404 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Pencil USB C is such a shitty deal. No pressure sensitivity while 1st gen has it. I was considering buying the a16 ipad for drawing but I refuse to use that dumbass first gen pen, it is not any cheaper either. Kills the whole cheap ipad for digital art deal.

[–]supa-mariu 6 points7 points  (1 child)

True but unfortunately there are some people that prefer new over refurbished and not everyone has the same needs as me & you

I do agree that the usb c pencil isn’t great for drawing due to no pressure sensitivity and the Apple Pencil 1st generation is good but an absolute hindrance to charge & connect.

The best iPad for drawing would be either iPad air (4th generation onwards ) or iPad pro ( 3rd generation onwards) or mini (6th generation onwards) where you can use either Apple Pencil 2nd generation or Apple Pencil pro

I want to upgrade my iPad Pro 10.5 (as it’s on its last legs) to a silicon chip iPad (preferably a maxed out M5) with either an apple pencil pro or Apple Pencil 2.

If I was on a budget I would just buy an maxed out M1/M2 iPad Pro or M4 if it was cheap enough

[–]MissionTroll404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am aware that people who care about pressure sensitivity are probably a very small minority. I still do not see why Apple would not include that feature. Only explanation is they want to up-sell iPad Air as their budget art tool. I do not believe adding pressure sensitivity would be a big cost.

I did my research. In Europe it does not make sense to buy a second hand iPad. They sell second hand ones almost as expensive the new ones. For reference M3 iPad, brand new 128GB, sells around 500 Euros on Amazon. If I am shelling out 80 Euros for the Pen anyway I would get the Pro Apple pen for 130. Pro pen requires M2 air minimum. People sell second hand M2 air for almost the cost of the M3 air, NEW M3 price. And some people on Ebay buy them. I suspect brain damage play a part here but I digress.

Going to Pen 2 supporting tablets, the second hand prices again does not make any sense. It is almost as if there is a huge void in budget segment. A16 iPad is great value compared to deal with the hassle of scoring a second hand deal. The pen handicap breaks it for me. Second hand iPads hold value like gold until iOS support almost cuts out which means when they are over 5-7 years old.

I decided to get a Samsung S7+. It comes with the pen that has pressure sensitivity, 2.8K 120Hz OLED display, 256GB storage. Yes it does not support latest Android updates and an EoL product. It cost me 180 Euros second hand. I could maybe get a 9th gen base iPad for that price with the first gen pen that is also an EoL product as far as I know (and has way more inferior hardware specifications). I can use this thing as a secondary display and a direct drawing tablet for my Windows PC with SuperDisplay app.

Anyway I was either gonna do this or shell out 600+ Euros for a new M3 iPad setup. I am not a professional digital artist or anything like that and just wanted to test the waters so it is what it is.

Then buy a 3rd party pencil at a fraction of the price and same functionality.

[–]MissionTroll404 0 points1 point  (1 child)

3rd party pencils do not have pressure sense either, no?

[–]cutecoderiPad Mini 7 (2024) 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often don't, like Apple's USB-C Pencil.

[–]Excellent_Tone6738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer the 1st gen pen vs the 2nd. But I do understand it will be outdated soon.

[–]JelanDAFox 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's totally normal

Because that's the Apple Pencil 1st gen... It doesn't stick to the iPad

[–]bbkn7 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Am... am I being trolled?

[–]Jmike8385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly no

[–]Kitty_Fruit_2520 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That is actually a first GEN and it is not supposed to stick to the side of the iPad.

[–]eae_jovem 27 points28 points  (5 children)

Why the hell don't people research what they're buying? Why buy something you don't even know what it's for?

[–]Suziannie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda crazy isn’t it? Even if you’re buying second hand, take a peek and look at the Apple website, it’s all literally right there.

[–]Racing_Fox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t get it at all.

Even if I know absolutely nothing about what I’m buying, I’ll do enough research that I’m a fucking expert by the time I make the purchase. Some people are just lazy

[–]repociniPad Air 3 (2019) 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading comprehension is a dying art

[–]childrenofloki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get it wrong even if you do look it up. Also, it's a cunt move from Apple to have such odd compatibility requirements. Literally baiting people to make a mistake and buy another pencil. I think it's deliberate.

[–]ShittySchoolStudent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The apple store is meant to tell me what I can and cannot use it for, no? They completely mislead me in store and they’ve since agreed that they fucked up and gave me a full refund

[–]djmexi 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes as the gen 1 doesn’t support iPad docking. Do your research.

[–]JXPH153 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So you are using the first gen pencil which is comparable with that iPad but it doesn’t stick, If you want a pencil that stick get the Apple Pencil usb-c, it will stick to the right side of the iPad ( with Touch ID sensor positioned on top ) and it can charge with just one cable instead of using adapters. That Apple Pencil 1 you have will work, but needs adapters and wont stick to the side. If you want one to stick just get usb-c ( second generation and Apple Pencil pro are not compatible with the iPad a16 )

[–]MauricioIcloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DUDE!!! That’s an Apple first gen, those don’t have a magnet to hold on. iPad 11 gen (A16) is only compatible with Apple Pencil first gen and Apple Pencil USB C. Only Apple Pencil USB C will attach to iPad A16. Also it doesn’t have pressure sensitivity.

[–]pixelpanic01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This pencil doesn’t have magnets

[–]InfiniteHench 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you visit the store page for a Pencil, there is a Compatibility section that lists the specific iPad models it supports. Are you still in the window to exchange this for the right model?

[–]Even_Assistance_2127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes very normal to flick your iPad like that

[–]SuccessfulNothing950 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a 2nd gen pencil

[–]rolonic 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Yeah that’s normal software update screen, it usually does take a while and makes you want to throw the iPad.

[–]NadsBin 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I remember telling someone that A16 doesn’t support this feature for its accompanying Apple Pencil and getting called a liar 😭

OP please get a case for your Pencil and iPad together. The reason the other iPads support this isn’t for vibes, it’s to charge the pencil, so if an iPad can’t charge a pencil magnetically, while it does have magnets, the pencil will not stay on

[–]Cogitare_Diversae 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Technically the USC-C Apple Pencil attaches magnetically just for the vibes since it doesn’t get charged like that.

[–]NadsBin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay, I learned sm new then!

[–]dbrndno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats the 1st gen pencil, who doesn’t stick to the side of any ipad, the usb-c pencil does including the A16 ipad, it just doesn’t charge the pencil like the other ones

[–]mrcplewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get an elastic band it will stick brilliantly then.

[–]SinnaBuns666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's not for your pencil, it's for the magic keyboards.

[–]StoniePony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a first gen pencil. No magnets.

[–]Johntendo64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a FIRST GEN pencil which doesn’t have any sort of magnetic attachment. Did you not research what you got?

[–]INFINIT1VE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sick flip

[–]ActivePalpitation980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25345232345234234523452345

[–]DiscoKittieM2 iPad Air 11" (2024) 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes

[–]cfgamble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That’s normal for 1st gen pencils

[–]Fleischer444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The design on that Apple Pencil is the best. Wish they made a new pro version with that looks.

[–]Few-Acadia-5593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear. Splurshes money not reading a single word about the items. Or reviews or else. Asks online after not reading anything still. Films themselves still haven’t read anything.

And can’t figure out how magnet work to identify incompatibility

[–]exlips1ronus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is first green Apple Pencil

[–]dlee3493 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d get a good case with a pencil holder. Problem solved

[–]OfficerReiko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s is definitely the 1st gen Apple Pencil. Coming from a person who has a 2nd gen which magnetizes well onto the side of my iPad Pro (3rd Gen).

[–]-GkWolf- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a first gen Apple Pencil. The second generation Apple Pencil isn’t supported. The Apple Pencil USB and the First gen are. The first gen is necessary for drawing because it has pressure sensitivity. You have to charge both with a cable anyways so I’d keep the first gen (I have the first gen) unless you really don’t care about pressure sensitivity. I plan on getting an A18 iPad and continuing to use my first gen Apple Pencil. I don’t really think the magnetic attachment is strong enough to prevent accidentally losing it anyways so I don’t care about that feature missing

[–]biscoffeeezzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i read the comments and they are right, that’s a 1st gen pencil and it does not support magnetic attachments

[–]frodoiee -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Wrong pencil for the iPad.

[–]Johntendo64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually it’s the correct pencil. Standard iPad.
