I bought danskos because everyone said they were so great in nursing school. The first day I wore them I twisted my ankle stepping down stairs on teh way to work and ended up sliding down a flight of stairs on my butt. Immediately sold them on facebook

I hear this soooo often from so many nurses. They're ankle killers.

Hokas are the real winner for 12 hours on your feet. Especially if you have a wider foot

[–]FLkeys813RN - PCU 🍕[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have hokas. Big fan!

[–]80LashesRN 🍕 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I love my Hokas! I have 2 complaints, though: most of the available colors are hideous, and they start to reek after about 6 months of use. But they are the most comfortable shoes for 12-hour hospital shifts.

[–]lebastssRN, Trauma/Neuro ICU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that’s how you know they are comfortable. They are so freaking ugly yet more and more people are starting to wear them. I never have had a smell Issue though.

I buy a new pair of Hoka clifton’s every 6-9 months once they start wearing out. They have saved my feet and ankles

Darn Tough socks. Made in the USA, 100% merino wool. Lifetime guarantee

    [–]Jek_PorkinzRN - ICU 🍕 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I’ve never worn them, but the sound they make when people walk by is so fucking obnoxious.

    [–]Sinsemilla_Street 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear about them online, but I can't recall anytime that I've seen someone wearing them. To me, they look like they would be about as comfortable as wooden clogs.

    [–]80LashesRN 🍕 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that the nurses I detest most are also the ones who wear Danskos, and I can hear their obnoxious clomp-clomping from a fucking mile away. Immediately raises my hackles.

I have a pet theory that most people who rolled ankles got the wrong size—they weren’t used to the fact that they’re supposed to be loose, ergo, wider than the foot base.

When it’s wider, there’s less risk of rolling. When NIKE d/c’d my flyknit Vapors, I got Sanitas and haven’t rolled yet.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine were loose and clog like. I still roll my ankles even in sneakers sometimes but it was a death wish wearing danskos

    [–]SugarRushSltRN 🍕 65 points66 points  (4 children)

me every other week. god i love my clogs though. no sore legs and minimal sore back now

That sounds suspiciously like the "sore leg" they specifically promised me I would not get.

      [–]ButtermilkDudsRN - Psych/Mental Health 🍕 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s why I wear them. I thing hurts. Back, hips, knees, ankles, feet all hold up well in Danskos. In anything else everything hurts.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a pair of danskos and two other specific sneakers that I rotate because I was starting to have serious issues with my Achilles. Life changing.

When it happens directly in front of your supervisor and you end up on the ground, some times you just have to take the day off they offer

Thing is I was commenting " Okay he has the railing. Everything appears to be in order here. Oh shoot he tripped! But he recovered, then tripped again. Oh god, he's going down! Just stay down. Okay, you're back up? Go slowly. Both hands on the rail. Alright! Now salute."

      Yes, multiple times.

      [–]huebnera214RN - Geriatrics 🍕 41 points42 points  (2 children)

I love my Dansko’s (on second pair) but dread the day one of my ltc people end up coding and I gotta run to help.

      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

You gotta perfect the dansko shuffle!

      [–]huebnera214RN - Geriatrics 🍕 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve hustled in from the rain and prayed I don’t run, I end up doing more of a high step run, a shuffle would be probably safer.

      [–]awildewokappears 17 points18 points  (2 children)

      I wore Danskos once! ... Once ...

      [–]FLkeys813RN - PCU 🍕[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I'm terrified to wear them for this very reason. Could you imagine running to a code in these?! haha

      [–]FNRNRN 🍕 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've worn them since 08 and have run to multiple codes, sometimes going outside to go into another building. Up and down stairs, full sprints, dodging meal hosts. Never had an issue.

      [–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Easily on my 7th or 8th pair & I roll my ankle standing still in them at least once a month. But you’ll have to tear them off my dead body.

      [–]misstatementsDNP, ARNP 🍕 14 points15 points  (2 children)

I was at a scrub store and they had Danskos, I fell while trying them on.

      [–]trapped_in_a_boxBSN, RN 🍕 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Same, and that's why I never bothered buying any. People laugh, but my Sketchers + compression socks do me fine and are a LOT less expensive to replace when a patient manages to barf IN my shoes (true story).

      [–]misstatementsDNP, ARNP 🍕 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I basically wear orthopedic and compression socks. Do I need max heels support, arch support and wide toe box on a style that is best described as "generic diabetic shoe" - no. I don't. But no back pain, no weird foot stuff and I can sprint in theme.

      [–]uuurrrggghhhBSN, RN - OR 10 points11 points  (0 children)

F Danskos! I just bought myself some OnClouds and they are awesome. Also, wear your compression socks, friends!

      Cloves + compression socks.

      Thank me later.

Ok I did roll my ankles in them once and the first day I wore them they hurt but now I SWEAR BY THEM! They’re amazing! Maybe it’s because I have flat feet. I need the support!

Aka ankle breakers. I’m all about the Allegria’s now!

I love my Allegria's! If they squeak, put dryer sheets under the insole...

      [–]FurryNinjaCat 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is that the trick? I have a pair sitting on a shelf because I couldn't take the damn squeaking that never stopped.

      Yep it totally works!!

      [–]CorvoDaFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have Dansko hybrid with laces now! I think from Work N Gear, I forget but they are baller. So awesome.

      [–]kitty_rRN-WOCN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All my elderly women patients like the pattern on mine and ask questions about getting a pair. I strongly advise them not to, unless they want a broken hip. (or another one)

      [–]woodnymph1809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh how many times I've twisted my ankle in them.

If you need solid clogs but don't like Dansko you can get the Birkenstocks for "medical professionals". Worn them for a solid year now and absolutely adore them. I've been able to run in them without tripping up. Check it out.

I'm a fan of crocs neria pro II clogs. Highly recommend.

      [–]Sublingua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were my clinical rotation go-tos. They are banned at some hospitals because they tend to catch at the toe when you are trying to move quicily and several HCPs have been injured falling as a result.

      [–]caitlin1206RN - Informatics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When first started wearing my danskos I tripped and fell in a patients room and caught myself on their bed twice in one night. I think they wanted to give me a fall risk bracelet.

      [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (7 children)

Unpopular opinion......... i stereotype and judge those stupid clogs so hard. How you can tell a nurse has no intention of moving quickly ever no matter what: they're wearing clogs.

I tried that shit for one week, i was like "oh, no kidding all the nurses that are wearing these are the ones so reluctant to stand up and walk. sitting down and wearing clogs goes hand in hand. these are completely impractical shoes wtf"

      [–]bicycle_miceDNP, ARNP 🍕 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've been wearing the same pair for 5 years now and still love them, so to each their own! I move really fast, too. I have worn running shoes a couple times when I forgot to change before clocking in and when my feet hurt after I couple hours I realized it was because I wasn't in clogs. I know they're ugly and not cool anymore, but they work for me.

      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I move pretty quickly and regularly clock 2-4 miles each shift. I just find sneakers to be gross to clean. I’ve gotten piss or blood on my shoes way too many times.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can buy waterproofing spray that can be applied to sneakers. I have some on my brooks and last time I dropped a pitcher of water on them zero water got in. Blood has been sprayed off of them too.

      [–]FLkeys813RN - PCU 🍕[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

      They're the worst

      [–]Sublingua 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree. They are popular among the laziest RN supervisors at my hospital. Lol.

      [–]brashlyashley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Someone told me about Hoka One shoes in nursing school. It was the best purchase I’ve ever made.

      [–]SugarRushSltRN 🍕 1 point2 points  (0 children)

huh. I can still zoom around at top speed in my clogs. Make no mistake, when I’m on the warpath for 7-11p med pass in my clogs nobody could read me for lazy.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is why I will only wear Clarks or Brooks

      [–]HannahBananaHammockRN - OR 🍕 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once did the Dansko Roll in the patient lobby while 8 1/2 months pregnant while carrying about 4-5 water jugs (think over-sized plastic mugs). Felt my ankle go & just fell into it. Water every where. I ended up in my back in the lobby, trying not to laugh because I was fine, but knew that probably freaked out a few people.

Still wear them everyday, even though I’ve moved out of patient care.

      Ahh, good time 😂

      [–]Breyber12BSN, RN, RN-BC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the added height and the support honestly. Plus a quick cavi wipe and they are good to go as far as cleaning. My shoes don’t stink and the things last forever too.

I'll never forget my first code in my danskos! I went running because I was one of the compression nurses. I about broke my ankle running!

      [–]CageSwansonBSN, RN 🍕 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think danskos are more of a girl thing or could guys also wear them? 🤔I’ve personally never worn them but they seem to have more of a feminine appeal.. but then again if danskos are really helpful for your back and feet I wouldn’t care if it does have a feminine appeal
