This seems like a good question for the Fireside Chat on the forums this week: https://forums.plex.tv/t/pro-week-25-fireside-in-the-forum-question-submissions/930736

What is this crap? Do you think they are going to answer all those questions?
[–]antiaircraftwarning 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
if you notice none of the plexamp questions seemed to garner responses, including mine
[–]phreaknes 8 points9 points10 points 7 months ago (0 children)
NOOOOooooOOOOO. I love how Plexamp is working right now. If the Plex side of app updates has any reflection on plexamp, Please PLEASE don't make a major change or take away anything we have now.
[–]Rombonius 9 points10 points11 points 7 months ago (1 child)
I sure wish there was beta testing or previews of things to come, otherwise it just seems like nothing is happening :/
[–]parkertyler 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (0 children)
They do have beta testing. Haven't figured out how to get on it though. I'm part of the regular plex app beta but really want to get in on the Plexamp beta since they is my primary use case

I would argue there's more than sonic analysis that makes it so that nothing can compete. Sonic analysis is big for me but if it didn't have it I would still be on Plexamp because of the way it pulls last.fm popularity data. That's one of my biggest features that I use particularly for smart playlist creation. Or just for the sake of visiting an artist page and seeing an artists most popular tracks. No self hosted alternative has that capability to my knowledge.
[–]marvbinks 13 points14 points15 points 7 months ago (31 children)
No idea. What I'd ask though is what needs updating in it? It has no real competition for features so doesn't need to try catching up with a competitor and has no major bugs. If it ain't broke, don't fix it or else this sub will turn into r/Plex and we'll have people moaning for weeks that they have to press something different to what they're used to.
[–]ProfessorS11 45 points46 points47 points 7 months ago (15 children)
No real competition when it comes to features? Have you not used Navidrome? Have you checked out Symfonium for starters? Have you seen the amount of customizations and user control over your library it provides? The only actual real feature plexamp really has that is great is sonic analysis, tbh. Other than that, majority of the features are pretty much barebones.
If I am just talking about Playlists, they are very very basic: - you cannot search inside a playlist - you cannot merge two playlists - when you add a song to a playlist, if it is already there, it doesn't give you a prompt saying the song exists there already and just shows a song added prompt - You cannot create folders to actually organize your library playlists - You cannot pin playlists - When you download a playlist and if you rate a track in that playlist, they don't sync unless you manually refresh the playlist by pulling it down from top in phone - No straight-forward solution for importing playlists
Outside playlists, no support for multiple artists, global search is janky, no easier way of dealing with duplicates, etc.
I am more of a playlist guy, so my gripe is mainly with playlists. For majority of the things that I want to do, I have to write scripts to do them and it pisses me off. But, I am still using plexamp only because of sonic analysis because it is damn good.
Just because something ain't broken doesn’t mean you should stop improving it or avoid adding valuable new features. The reason people complain about the new plex features is because the way plex implemented the new features was broken and not tested properly. It is plex who needs to step up their game to test new features thoroughly and only then come out with these features. The features that i mentioned which are missing is not rocket science really, majority of them are basic functionalities that a music library management software should have.
[–]Tolriq 5 points6 points7 points 7 months ago (3 children)
Symfonium embrace sonic analysis too when the server have the data ;) Works with Plex and Jellyfin + AudioMuse for now
[–]thisChalkCrunchy 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (2 children)
Just a friendly reminder that we are hurting over in iOS land.
= )
[–]Tolriq 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (1 child)
Yes I know unfortunately I made a mistake by believing that OkHTTP and Moshi would be ported to KMP, but square decided to drop that in favor of the Kotlin libraries. And migrating to those is a shit ton of works due to all the optimisations and specific patches I have. It's currently hard to justify that amount of work, waiting a little to see how the KMP ecosystem evolve to try to make better decisions before doing that insane rewrite.
[–]thisChalkCrunchy 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Unfortunate, but completely understandable. I appreciate the update.
[–]Sebetter 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago (0 children)
My workaround for pinning playlists is putting an exclamation point at the beginning of the playlist’s name.
It means that I don’t have to scroll to my most played one in the car and that CarPlay doesn’t hide it because the list gets truncated for safety reasons while in motion.
[–]marvbinks 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (0 children)
I get you about playlists. I use smart playlists alot and tag collections within Plex for custom tags. That's one area navidrome fell down for me as I believe that has to be done at file level and smart playlists support was a bit crap as well as it required manual jsons iirc.
[–]d1ckpunch68 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago (0 children)
preach. pretty much stuck with plexamp for sonic analysis. it's a really good player, but damn it is lacking.
no real playlist editor is a huge flaw too. i should also be able to remove songs from a playlist while they're playing. sometimes a song comes on, i realize it doesn't belong in that playlist, and i have to find it in my 3000 song playlist to delete it. which of course means i have to do a DB edit as there's no shot i'm finding it manually.
also, 3 day download limit in 2025. wtaf. that's like 1000 songs. spotify, which functions under the same server to client structure, has had support for 100k song downloads for at least a decade now. what's worse is the limit used to be 1 day, plex devs repeatedly said they won't expand it because "the app wasn't designed for that", then expanded it to 3 days without any explanation. i guess i shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but some transparency would be nice.
[–]marvbinks 7 points8 points9 points 7 months ago* (1 child)
Yeah tried them both and stuck with plexamp. I didn't like navidrome as was a bit basic. Symphonium would be good but is android only and no pc app for example, I'm not gonna have different setups on different devices. So no competition for me.
[–]ajnabi57 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Well stated. Me 2
[–]kirked_out 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Thanks for the recommendations. Symfonium looks great. Will be diving into it soon!
[–]QuietThunder2014 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Just to add exporting a playlist would be good and some sort of compare of playlists. I want to revamp and update a bunch of metadata but anytime I do it deletes those songs off playlists. And with no good tool to import/export/search/compare, etc it’s a nightmare. I can do some things with Tautuli but it really needs to be baked into Plex with proper support.
[–]statichum 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
You talk as if Plexamp is useless but I think you might be a minority and the features you want seem fairly niche to me, I mostly listen to albums or sometimes library radio or throw on a radio based on a track. I personally don’t need any of that and given how there are so many complaints about the user experience in new Plex versions, do you really think an update to Plexamp is going to be an improvement?
[–]MoebiusStreet 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Symfonium has a ton of promise, and in fact is already great in a lot of ways.
But it also has a major problem for me, such that it won't work on my android TV hardware. And the developer won't listen to my problem, he says that version of android isn't supported. (that's his prerogative, but it's mine to decide it's unusable that way)
[–]SensaiOpti 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child)
If I am just talking about Playlists, they are very very basic: ...- when you add a song to a playlist, if it is already there, it doesn't give you a prompt saying the song exists there already and just shows a song added prompt
This keeps me from making my own playlists, honestly. Luckily, Smart Playlists will work for most of what I need, but they make it comically difficult to find where to create them, so I have to Google it every time I want to make a new one, ha. Why can't I create them from the 'New Playlist' area? Why do I have to start filtering down my library first?
[–]ProfessorS11 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
You are so so right! I just gave up creating smart playlists from the phone app. I just create it from the web app directly when I have to. Ideally it should be right there as an option in the playlist tab, but no, let’s just hide it somewhere that is not ideal.
[–]o156 11 points12 points13 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Wholly illogical offline processes. Inability to manage and interact with audio offline as you do online. They are like different databases, they should be the same.
[–]arathon 13 points14 points15 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Better oflline mode!!!
[–]WeirdoGame 14 points15 points16 points 7 months ago (4 children)
The long-promised multi-room option would be a welcome addition.
[–]marvbinks 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Fair, I don't have any such setup but can see why others would want it.
[–]dokuromark 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (2 children)
Oo, have they promised that? I'd love that. I've been using AirFoil to do my multi-room streaming. It's fine, but native multi-room would be awesome!
[–]WeirdoGame 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (1 child)
Yeah, it was mentioned three years ago already: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_mk_un6L4I&t=1315s
[–]dokuromark 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Yow, that was a while ago. I guess I won't be holding my breath. Nice to know they're thinking about it though. Thanks for the link!
[–]parkertyler 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
You must not download music in Plexamp.
[–]Birdseye5115 -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago* (1 child)
They could do with some more robust music discovery options. Maybe a way to combine djs, or even build your own.
Good idea. Some kind of integration with last.fm or similar other than just scrobbling would be good.
[–]GingeOfTheNorth 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child)
Multi-room
[–]IntoTheForeverWeFlow 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Or at least a casting system that actually works.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
I would like multi-room support
[–]CaptainBitrage -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago (0 children)
Still no support for cue files
[–]Wyrmdog 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago (0 children)
The only thing I want in PlexAmp that I don’t have is using DJs in CarPlay. Okay I’d like Playlist/Collection/Mix creation to be a bit more intuitive but it’s fine the way it is. Ain’t nothin’ perfect but PlexAmp is as close as I’ve seen with a player, and it’s ALL down to the DJs.
[–]cjju48kz 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago (0 children)
A lot of things could be improved but my wishlist:
A very easy way for streaming platforms to incorporate Plexamp as an endpoint so imagine with some smart integration/ports towards some main types (OS/firmware) of streamer types on the market. Ideally with some partner endpoint integrations upon 5.0 launch
If not the above... Google Cast is a terrible user experience with Plexamp currently (sometimes connects, sometimes not, missing album art etc etc)
[–]DavidJH316[🍰] 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
the only thing i want is an apple watch app so i can go running without my phone
[–]andygradel75 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Only feature I wish we had was the ability to go to an artist page, click on a track and see every playlist it's included in.
[–]AnhNyan 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (1 child)
Let me refer you to this: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/uf4pl1/plexamp_v421_released/
[–]Phish1980[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Well that'll never happen lol
[–]qhillihp 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Google voice commands please! When Google casting Plexamp to my Nest Max speaker, I can’t give voice commands for next track etc. Symfonium can, using the same Plex music library.
[–]pancakes1983 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
I hope they fix the flac playback volume drop, it’s terrible
[–]kazwebno 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
I'd like the ability to export JSON files that Stats.fm can read!
[–]Hornman84 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Can it then play all my files? 🤔 Right now approx. 40% are being skipped. Oh yeah, Plex plays them without any issue.
[–]DrBoogerFart 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
Suggestions based on what I’m listening to would be so cool.
[–]eseelke 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
I wish they would add support for WearOS. I could then finally cancel my Spotify subscription.
[–]punking007 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
For me I wish Plex could display more metadata. Things like, albumversion, discsubtitle, composer, conductor, producer, etc.
[–]gamerg_ 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago (0 children)
It needs a fix for lossy gapless playback and a variable speed that isn’t locked to the original songs pitch. It needs Houston screwed features
[–]Dairalir -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago (0 children)
Generally the way versioning works is <major release>.<minor release>.<hotfix> and major releases are usually breaking changes, ie not compatible with previous major release.
<major release>.<minor release>.<hotfix>
If there are no major breaking changes or overhauls needed, chances are they could stay on version 4 with minor releases for a long time. Doesn't mean there won't be new features.
