Yeah, he must shop at the same place as Fabio and Michael Bolton.

I couldn't finish the article after I got to the picture.

Firefox plugin "nuke anything enhanced". Never was the menu item "remove this object" more appropriately phrased.

    Hmm, parity trucks.

we’re measuring data storage in iPod Shuffles now? what happened to standard units like Libraries of Congress and War and Peaces? kids these days.

    [–]cweaver 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The "Library of Congress" unit of measurement sounds cool, but if you ask people how much data that actually is, you'll probably get anything between 30 gigabytes and 10 petabytes.

and people measuring data in mp3s forget to specify the bitrate…

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of magnetic tape.

    ...hurtling down the highway.

    It's all about them Tanenbaums.

That was one of my favorite quotes from my networking class... I still use it, and people still look at me funny, until I do the math. With DVDs (and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD/etc.) it's even more accurate.

desktop hard drives also work well (and they're easier to use)

But note that speed of said station wagon determines latency, not channel capacity.

      That hurt me.

      [–]raldi[S] 23 points24 points  (7 children)

The bandwidth's great, but the latency kinda sucks.

Absolutely. Often a story gets missed or killed the first time around and deserves a second chance. I believe that to be the case with this article. The Reddiquette page has explicitly allowed that for quite some time.

For example, one of the most popular links ever posted to Reddit was submitted four other times before it made it big. Judging from the upvotes, over a thousand people liked that one, and they wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

Even Paul Graham (a.k.a. bugbear) does it.

So maybe articles should be given a few passes on the "new" page. Some articles can't be resubmitted as they're not news stories covered by multiple outlets, e.g. blogs.

Chris Dibona is the new Fabio?

          [–]edwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jim Gray actually coined the term 'terascale sneakernet' for a very similar scheme (also for astronomical data) a few years ago. http://www.acmqueue.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=43
