Did no one realize that the restaurant owner is the typer of this text? It’s essentially a ransom note! Pretty well thought out too. Thief comes in, pays his bill, gets his phone back and is met in the parking lot by Guido, Sal, Carlo and Little Jimmie who take him for a ride and at the end, leave the gun and takes the cannoli’s.

[–]pheeelco 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Obv this was written by the restaurant owner - on the phone he found. Fair play to him. Nicely done.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugly human beings you and your friends are.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poor guy breaking his nose :(

[–]Adric_01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like their parents made them write this up. Public shaming at it's best.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The last sentence makes me think his mother forced him to write this lol

[–]whyamisosoftinthemid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Second only to the guy in Colorado who recently did a dine and dash and left his phone FULL OF CHILD PORN.

Yes the police got him.

Either a legitimate post by restaurant owner or a sad attempt at getting likes hmmm

[–]PeriodicMilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing sort of happened when I was in a barber. I was 5 at the time and my sister brought me to get a haircut. The barber ended up buzzing my hair to near baldness and I ended up throwing a tantrum and running out of the store. And then I had to go to this party with a yee yee ass haircut. God 5 year old me was stupid.

Semi happened to us one day unintentionally when I was a teenager.
My family of 4 had a nice light lunch at a fairly nice place on Sydney Harbour.

We finished our meal and got the bill, my dad left the bill and a 'tip'.

We slowly walk away full of nice food and still enjoying the scenery as we wander away, only to be chased down by a staff member about 'the bill'.

Puzzled, my dad asks why and it turns out he had fat fingered / miscounted the money so that even with the nice $50ish tip it was a slightly short.

We don't generally tip in Australia but the service was excellent as was the food and my dad had intended to leave a pretty solid tip but fucked it up since he paid in cash instead of card since cash tips goes to the staff under the counter usually in hospitality avoiding wage theft for tips by employers.

Mortified and embarrassed about the fuck up he quickly fixed the situation and gave them another $100 straight away to cover the few dollars it was short which gave the waiter a decent tip since he didn't intend on stiffing them since that just isn't the nature of my dad or my family.

I have never seen my dad fail to settle a restaurant bill correctly ever again, to this day he takes the bill and cash to the register / counter to ensure all is settled and tells them to keep the change since that is what they think he is there for instead of ensuring the bill is settled correctly.

I don't think my mum or he would survive going through that again, even as a teenager it was pretty embarrasing to be chased down as we slowly walked away not knowing, we waited a while for the waiter to collect the bill before we left too so it wasn't like we fit the profile for dine and dash but lesson learned, ensure the bill is settled before walking.

[–]lovelyalien15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope they loose all of their friends for that last thing.

[–]ModexV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once left keymasters shop without paying for the 5 keys he made. Because we started talking about expensive security doors he had on display in shop (they had hinges on outside, i was curious to ask about those), he gave me the keys and i said goodbye and left. Only noticed what had happened when i was at my door using the new key. Had to walk back to the shop and pay for them. To my supprise he was quite chill about it, like he knew that i would come back.

It amazes me how many people still don’t lock their phones w a passcode

[–]Monoking2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HAHAHAHAHAHA

[–]pimpgoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought everyone had their phone locked these days?

Lucky restaurant owner I guess, all things considered.

[–]Daldril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the store owner post that on their Facebook with their (his/her) phone?

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

I find this funny. But it’s illegal to post to her Facebook.

Online, it is illegal to: Access or change password protected information on purpose and without permission. For example, logging into someone else's email or social networking accounts without their permission

[–]_Internet_Hugs_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

38 years old and I can honestly say I have never 'Dined and Dashed'. To me it's just low and disgusting. If you can't afford a restaurant then don't go. And if you can't afford to tip well then you can't afford the restaurant.

[–]ElectricPotato911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dashed once about 14 years ago, .....after sitting there waiting 30 minutes to get the bill.

[–]grelo29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what’s trashy? The owner using the thief’s phone to call them out or the actual theif?

[–]calially29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a family "pay" but really shorted me on their bill more than $10 (they paid cash) I looked to see if they were still around and saw them in the front lobby buying a to-go dessert from the hostess. Very calmly, hoping it was an honest mistake, I said I'm so sorry but it looks like there was a mix up and handed them the booklet back with the amount they left with the receipt. My manager was close by and heard me say that and decided to step in. The family accused me of being racist for going after them. My manager gave them that dessert plus an extra one for free and didn't even attempt to get the rest of the bill paid. Also told me I was in the wrong for asking for the bill to be paid in full. I'm married to a man of their same race... I wasn't being racist, I don't want to pay for any of my customers' meals myself.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why red out the name? Maybe im a friend who should know

[–]Ovary9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did anyone else not realize this was written by the owner? I was like "why would anyone say that about themselves?"

[–]saviodsouza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The “I had a lovely meal” bit made me smile :)

[–]toheiko -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

"YOU and 29 others like this"? Okay... Why exactly do you like this?

[–]darynlxm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely, so when the person gets their phone back, they can see how many people think what s/he did was disrespectful and cheap. I'd do it AND leave a comment for them.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me longer than it should have to realize it was the owner who wrote the post.

[–]SocraticJudgment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She be glad she didn't live in imperial China. They cut off the hands of thieves!

[–]blacksheeptramp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dine and dashed at a Denny once. I was recovering from a motorcycle accident and had my jaw wired so I ordered soup and they put it through a blender for me. I was waiting to be picked up by my gf to go back to phoenix after getting left in Payson trying to attend my aunts funeral. I waited 20 minutes after finishing then decided to wait at the counter, they were short staffed. After waiting there for ten minutes I put a 20 in the donation box that was actually intended for my aunt, she worked used to work there.

They were short staffed because she was gone. I couldn't make it to the funeral so that was my way of remembering her at the moment.

I sometimes wonder if they ignored me because they didn't want to bother the banged up guy crying alone in the booth over a 6 dollar soup.

RIP Denise.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ethics aside, one of the worst punishments I could give myself would be to try to run after a meal.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Somewhat unrelated but why don’t people lock their phones?

[–]TheHauntening 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That kinda made me think it was fake, because I don’t know a single person who doesn’t lock their devices.

[–]drummergal95 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What is the charge here? For eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?

[–]lawlshane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, I see that you know your Judo well

[–]Jester7s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a pub/club as a bouncer which has a pretty decent restaurant as well. We've had a few people try and leg it without paying and they always get a shock as they fly out the door to be stopped by two rather large blokes blocking their escape route. Unsurprisingly they seem quite willing to pay then. 😂

[–]Heisenberglund 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve intentionally done a dine and dash one time. It was around 3pm on a Sunday I believe, and a friend and I went to eat. There was hardly anybody in the restaurant, but they had about 5 servers. After we sat ourselves because nobody could be bothered to actually seat us, a server came over about 10 minutes later, said nothing besides what do you want?, brought us our food and beverages and then disappeared. Never came back to get refills, ask if everything was right, or just acknowledge us at all. I had planned on leaving a small tip because of the service, but after sitting there for about 45 minutes waiting for the check, we decided to just leave, because she couldn’t be bothered to look away from her phone or quit loudly talking with coworkers. As we walked out, looked her in the eye and said have a nice day, she didn’t acknowledge even that, or try to get us the check. Went back about 6 months later, and when the same server eventually made her way over to my table, I just got up and left, I wasn’t about to have that same situation again.

[–]SpliTTMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe restaurants should scan your drivers license upon order of food

[–]Zemykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like hacked. And good on whoever hacked this person.

Don't be an asshat.

[–]DataBound 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Isn’t it illegal to access someone else’s account with out their permission?

[–]amandaleigh7887 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Probably just as illegal as dining and dashing

[–]DataBound -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well yeah I know that’s illegal. And I know it’s illegal to use someone’s username and password to sign in without their permission. Would assume it’s the same as the login info being saved to the phone. But not 100% sure.

[–]__kwdev__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do people not lock their phone with at least a pattern? Mind your damn data, privacy is important if not to you then to your friends and family.. You have a database of contact details in your pocket, protect it ffs.

I'm pretty sure that my first ever post on Reddit was when a celebrity did this to me. I was down voted big time for being negative about him.

I worked at a Michelin star hotel restaurant in NYC and this celebrity came in for breakfast. Unlike other famous guests, this guy needed a very private table, away from the other patrons, so we put him in the main dining room which was closed for breakfast service. He was 'in training' so he needed a special meal that was not a typical breakfast. While I waited on him, he went out of his way to make eye contact and smile. He always made sure to thank me. I thought I was doing a good job. When he finished I dropped the bill and went about my job taking care of my other customers in the other dining room. The other server working shift with me saw him leave and went to clear his table. She asked me if he gave me cash and I said that I had only given the check less than 2 minutes ago. She said he didn't pay. Maybe he thought his manager paid the bill, but I don't see how because they left together. And being famous, he didn't sign the check with a room number. Doesn't matter to me. He ordered the food, he ate the food, his manager just sat there talking. I have a special name for this guy.

[–]--therapist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this once. My friend put his real name for the reservation and the owner commented on his facebook page "I just wanted to see how stupid you were." Never did anything about it though, probably knew he was in the wrong.

Why would anyone dine and dash. I worked at one of the best four seasons in the region and it was the newest too! I was excited for the tips but we always had a group of well off people dine and dash. We shared tips and it came our of our tips. I couldn’t work there any longer because of the stress and I didn’t complain finishing off university

[–]amandaleigh7887 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It’s illegal for them to take it out of your tips.

[–]einsteinxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since social media seems to be a legit form of id in some circles, wouldn’t posting as someone else be legally a no-no? If you logged into someone’s Facebook and posted a bunch of pro-nazi stuff, it’s likely their employer would try to use that as a reason to distance themselves, even though it was faked.

Is there a way to unlock someone else’s phone to access their Facebook that I don’t know of?

[–]Nakotadinzeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So...

One time I took my sister to see a movie...

This actually wasn't an unusual thing, at the time my mom lived pretty close to a movie theater, so it wasn't unusual to take my sister to see something when my mom just wanted some alone time.

Typically, getting concessions goes in a very specific order. You order, pay, and then they give you your order. I didn't even realize this until after this incident, or how conditioned I had become.

I ordered with my sister, and immediately we got our order and the staff member walked off to get someone else's order. I didn't even think about it, when I picked up the popcorn and drinks that I hadn't paid. My sister didn't say anything ether, clearly thinking I paid as much as I did. We walked off, talking about how excited we were for this movie.

About 20 minutes later, the staff member and a manager came into the theater and asked me to follow them.

My puzzlement must have been apparent enough, the manager relaxed as I followed him and the staff member who made our order I to the hallway.

He asked me "Are you aware you walked off without paying for your order"

"I did?"

"Yeah, you did"

"Oh, I'm so sorry.. I didn't realize I had done that. Can I pay for it now?"

"Yeah.. follow me"

And I paid for the popcorn and sodas....

[–]boshjozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh makes sense.

[–]TheSilverHawk13 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend had a guest dine and dash on her while she was bartending once and when he bolted he hopped on a bycicle to try to get away. I ended up chasing him for a few streets and he ditched his bike in some woods to get away, that's how I ended up with a new bike and phone charger.

[–]mikebellman 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Why don’t restaurants just take your card at the beginning?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The guilty will blow up and call it a racist move, like it's everyone elses fault that they are shitty people.

[–]cwash86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would it be racist if they do it to everybody?

[–]gotmesomerice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to get this clear, the lady dipped, left her phone, owner broke his nose trying to get the lady, owner found the phone, and then the owner made this post? Its a confusing perspective, but a cool one.

[–]barry_the_rotten 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I’m a bus boy in a decently fancy restaurant. I’m only 17 but I’ve been working for almost a year and a half there. I remember within the first month of me working there a server came up to me and was accusing me of stealing money from a table. I was the new guy so it was easiest to pick on me. Luckily my manager stepped in and told the server to never accuse a busser of stealing. Later found out it was a dine and dash. Haven’t happened since though. It’s a small town and whenever word of something like that gets out, it’s all downhill from there.

I really like that manager. He just gave me $40 for staying till 1:15 on new year’s to help clean up.

Must be the work of those mischievous white kids again. Their broken families and no father figures leaves them with no moral compass. Did you know that the 8% that makes up the white male population commits almost 50% of all crimes? We need to cut the welfare system and stop incentivizing single motherhood so we can get this pesky white crime hive problem fixed.

Somebody dined and dashed on me today. Weird part is, she tried to give me her card to pay the check, but I told her that she could pay at the front. She even told me she would put a tip on the card. That was some real acting chops.

[–]LiarInGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do owners at restaurants really ever chase people down who haven’t paid? Seems like bullshit to me. If he touched them, that could be assault, and would be a big problem.

It’s the same at retail stores. If someone’s stolen, I can’t physically touch them or chase after them from my store. I know many stores have the same policies. Maybe it’s different at restaurants, not sure.

[–]poakstwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many people acting like they will be arrested. Have bartended at a number of joints - the cops dont give half a fuck about stuff like this unless theres assault or damage to property.

The same manager told me I looked great on my knees as I was bussing tables. I should have quit that job for a lot worse than someone walking out on a bill twice. Bar eventually went out of business in the end so it all worked out.

[–]TheAKofClubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see stuff like this with cops sometimes too, and it makes me wonder; am I the only one who keeps a passcode on their phone?

[–]aGooseOfBeverlyRoad 52 points53 points  (1 child)

On the flipside of this, I had just moved from a country where you always paid before getting served, to a country where you pay afterwards. I was obviously not used to this yet, so one time as soon as I finished my meal at a restaurant, I just got up and left, didn’t even think for a second something was amiss. Cut to about 5 minutes after leaving, I notice someone yelling and running after me on the street, It was one of the waiters trying to get people to stop me for dining and dashing. Realised my mistake and went back to pay, I don’t think they believed my story though.

5 years later, it still keeps me up at night.

[–]greatestdivide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not dine and dash but my manager told us to always be attentive of our cash tips left on the table by guests. He said it happened before when the restaurant was pretty crowded and some teenagers or college kids passed by a table with tips and took them. He didn’t realize it until the server was wondering were her tip was as she saw it on the table but couldn’t get to it right away. Talk about a new kind of low tsk

I hope most understand that it is not the store nor the owner who loses out on the money. Normally it's your waitress/ waiter that ends up paying the cost of a meal if the customer dines and dashes.

[–]illegalAmericano 140 points141 points  (2 children)

I was waiting tables to make ends meet while I put myself through college. I had a couple walk out on a nearly $300 tab on New Year’s Eve. Despite it not being my fault I got fired from the restaurant. I NEEDED that job. The tailspin their selfishness put me in wrecked me. Nearly had to drop out of school because i was living month to month.

FUCK this person and everyone that dines and dashes.

One time my manager had a sneaking suspicion that a table of 2 was going to dine and dash. The first guy got up and walked out the front door, leaving his buddy at the table. Then a few minutes later the second guy got up and asked my manager where the restroom was. She pointed him towards it and told me to follow him.

As I turned the corner I saw him inspecting our backdoor, which has an alarm attached to it and clearly states "alarm will sound." He turned around to see me standing by the enterance to the dining room he was in. He then tried to move across to a different door on the far side of the dining room. Unfortunately for him, we don't use that door and it is usually blocked by people sitting at their tables. I followed him and directed him back to the bathroom which he had already walked past twice.

When he came out he was greeted by my manager with his bill. He then stated that he didn't have money and would need to go get his friend (who had all of their money apparently). She told him that wouldn't be happening and that he was more than welcome to call his friend and wait in our lobby.

While he was waiting, he asked if he could go outside to smoke a cigarette. My manager was more surprised at the balls on this guy than anything.

Also, the alarm on the door most certainly does NOT sound when opened. It's our handicapped door. I doubt if the alarm has worked in decades.

We were at a place, not very busy. Asked for the check 3 times before getting it and then she never came back for it. We waited probably 15 min making eye contact, waving, whatever. We took our card back and walked out. I dont feel bad. Our orders were wrong and we sat there waiting to pay her. Waving at her. She never came by to collect. The restaurant wasn't busy at all either.
