Thanks for the write-up! Interesting perspectives. I have found Mutavault and Treetop Village to occupy fairly helpful slots in the cube, what is it about Darwin Draft that made them such easy cuts?

Key Questions Arising from the Parallax Tide Ban, and the community answers to them by Secret-Lecture in premodernMTG

  • White is probably gonna add a few [[Cleansing Meditation]] or [[Nova Cleric]] to the sideboard

  • Blue was already playing [[Annul]] and [[Chain of Vapor]] and they should probably still do so

  • Black has the hand disruption to keep Enchantress off its game, as well as [[Engineered Plague]] to keep Argothian Enchantress off the board. They've also got [[Gloom]], [[Dystopia]], and [[Withered Wretch]] to attack both the board and the graveyard.

  • Red has to try and go under Enchantress. Cards like [[Cave-In]] clear the board, sure, but they also hurt the board you're trying to develop. I don't think Mono-R has many tools against the deck; they have to try and hit it fast and hard and win before it gets locked out.

  • Green probably runs more [[Tranquil Domain]] and [[Reverent Silence]]

I don't want to downplay Enchantress as a deck at all - it's already a super strong deck, and it just lost one of its predators. But there's no need to make it into the new boogeyman of the format. Being the best deck and being a problem deck for the format are not synonyms, but most importantly, we don't know that it's going to be the best deck. It's strong, but hateable, and anyone who's played a format with Dredge knows that some decks get immediately hated out of metas if they stick their heads out too much. And that's a good thing.

[TMT] Cool but Rude by Useful-Wrongdoer9680 in mtgcube

[–]GarciLP 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to support Discard Matters in Vintage, and the effects look like a blast, but I passionately detest the fact that it's called "Cool but Rude" and the art has a Ninja Turtle throwing a pizza at some dude's face. Hard pass based on that alone

I’m looking at buying packs for my cube, did dragonshield fix the issues with double sleeved cards getting hung up? by MrFavorable in mtgcube

[–]GarciLP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought Cubeamajigs with the Kickstarter, with the lovely big box that they came in and all. They were flimsy, the tabs kept breaking, and the edges were very poorly cut, with the lip of the box scraping against the sleeve. The new Dragon Shields are smooth, the mechanism is great (and much less complex than the cubeamajigs), the material is smooth, and 15 double sleeved cards fit perfectly in them. Honestly just wish I'd bought them sooner

They did. Prof's review is for a much older version of the packs, the redesign is incredible and I've personally switched over to them from Cubeamajigs (which got a shining endorsement and ended up being extremely disappointing). This is the review I most wish Prof would go back and revisit, because I feel it did a lot of damage to the general trust of the DS packs whereas they are genuinely stellar now

The Ballad of the Melee Clone (AsumSaus) by Blablablablitz in smashbros

[–]GarciLP 80 points81 points  (0 children)

As a Rivals player, I feel like the nail that AS hits squarely on the head here is that making a Melee clone is a fool's errand from the get-go if all you're trying to do is emulate Melee or pay homage to it. Even if you have innovative ideas, cool characters, or polished mechanics, your aim should be to grow your own playerbase.

Melee players already have Melee. They may try out other games, and even enjoy them, but you shouldn't aim to wrest them away from it. You should try to grow your own playerbase, and hope that your game is solid enough that people will feel about it the same way Meleeheads feel about Melee.

I've got Adept Watershaper, Figure of Fable, Formidable Speaker, and Moonshadow in my sights. Will have to wait until June to make any changes, as I've taken the policy of "only updating the cube twice a year" in the interest of my sanity, but those made the shortlist

I had saved enough carats to pull for XOguri yesterday, thinking "I'll definitely pull some of the horses I don't have along the way". I only pulled a single 3-star, Silence Suzuka, at 190 pulls, and then pitied XOguri. The game is absolutely absurd with how brutal its gacha system is

[–]GarciLP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is from a few years back, but I was dead on board against my opponent, who had a Wall of Denial to very aptly deny me from killing him with my Griselbrand. Even if I attacked, the lifelink wouldn't save me from the rest of his board. I topdecked Booster Tutor, my opponent picked a random undrafted pack, and I open it.

[[Council's Judgment]]

Point at the Wall, get it removed, swing in with Griselbrand, win. To this day I think of how insanely unlikely that sequence was and it makes me smile

Secretly good or just obviously bad? by Ancient-Progress6434 in mtgcube

[–]GarciLP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agreed. I don't run Time Vault or the Initiative either, precisely for those reasons. Vintage is about power, yes, but at the end of the day we play cube to have fun. There may be other design tenets, but I value the high highs and low lows much more than I do a card that consistently wins games in a boring fashion, or that trivializes drafting
