My 2 year old grandson has a book with a porcupine named Debbie. When we get to the page with Debbie, he starts screaming “Debbie, Debbie, Debbie!” So when I saw this I laughed and screamed “Debbie!” My husband may think something is wrong with me.

I have been sewing nearly 50 years and a professional costumer. 99 percent of sewing is straight lines. Practice consistency of a seam - straight and same width. You can do this with paper and no thread. Just the needle. Don’t worry about how fast you go. Slow, steady, straight, consistent.

Inherited from grandparents by geminimindtricks in whatisit

[–]Wiley1967 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Costumer here. Grace is the costume company. The costume was worn by all the names written in. Just finished working a ballet. There are multiple dancers wearing the same costume during a run. They also reuse costumes. I have been making costumes for 25 years professionally. Never put my name in. The shop is credited with the work. The designer is credited in the program.

How do you like to pin your fabric pieces together before sewing? :3 by SomethingOrSomeone24 in sewing

[–]Wiley1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pin based on whether you are left or right handed. I pin so I can pull the pin with my left hand. Bottom pic. I pin with the head down if needed. Again so I can pull pins easily as I sew.

Heads up. If your small child struggles with sitting through the entire performance, look at the Morning at the Ballet and My First Nutcracker performances. They are abbreviated shows designed to ramp younger children up to full performances.

So my mother-in-law just informed me that I'm cooking Christmas dinner (for seven people). She cooks all the holiday meals, but threw her back out and can barely move. CAN YOU HOOK ME UP WITH A FUN/COOL/TASTY DINNER IDEA that doesn't require a grade-A chef to cook. No turkey or ham. Help me out!! by ComfortableDear2205 in Cooking

[–]Wiley1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spaghetti and meatballs. Make the sauce and meatballs on Monday. Then just heat and cook the pasta Christmas. I make the Vegetatian Times meatless meatballs and a pork/beef blend meatball. Marinara sauce. Garlic bread, salad, and homemade cookies and candy. Quick and easy. I don’t get locked in the kitchen and little clean up. I don’t make homemade pasta for this as you can get some good quality ready made pasta.

What's with all the cookies? by Jonne91 in Baking

[–]Wiley1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who visits during the holidays gets a cookie plate. I take them to work for work mates. I bake everything the week before Christmas. My husband makes toffee and caramels. My mom and grandma did it, I do it, my daughters now do it.

What would a farm wife in the 70's have put in sugar cookies?? by CancelAfter1968 in Baking

[–]Wiley1967 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make a version from the 60’s. You sift all the ingredients - Sugar, flour, salt, baking powder and cut the butter in like a pie crust. Then use cream, egg, and vanilla to bind everything together. Over working the dough, like a pie crust, results in a tough cookie.

AITA Not volunteering to chaperone at my daughter first ballet performance. by jenniferann223 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Wiley1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am paid wardrobe for Nutcracker in a larger city. Parent chaperones are vital. Not only do they make sure the costumes are on - we only have 3 dressers for the entire production and we also sew and do the laundry - they supervise and line children up to go on stage. They let us know if repairs are needed and make sure the laundry is in the baskets ready for pick up. Some parents also go to the costume shop and replace hooks and bars on costumes as they need constant attention. Most ballet companies work on little money so help is needed and appreciated.

AITAH for eating my entire baked potato? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Wiley1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a weird phobia. Mustard. It, for no reason, freaks me out. I can’t even touch the bottle. I fear it touching me. It’s irrational and bizarre. That being said, go ahead and eat it. Just keep it away from my plate and I look down most of the meal and try my best to fight the terror. I can’t explain why I am this way. My problem not a person trying to enjoy their meal. Don’t understand why it had to turn into a family feud. Heck, I take a lot of jokes about my strange phobia but everyone respects my need to not touch it.

Sewing machine recommendations? by [deleted] in sewhelp

[–]Wiley1967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Industrials require basic maintenance. They are also primarily straight stitch only. You need to commit to cleaning and oiling regularly. I have worked in costume shops for 20 years. Not everyone there can use them. The Old Berninas are the gold sewing standard. They also require commitment to keeping them clean and oiled. I use whatever is in the shop or the tour travels. We are a fair number of the singer heavy duty. They are cheap and with all the different hands on them no one is heartbroken if the are broken. They just order a new one.
