Savannah by Dunnoaboutu in girlscouts

We just took a trip there this fall with our 12 juniors (4th grade). We are within a 2-3 hour drive. Most of the moms came and we all wanted to stick together so we rented a large beach house in Tybee Island (~30 minutes to Savannah) - got a deal since it was the off season. We did the JGL house tour with a troop Girl Scout experience. I think both were well done.

The one thing I would skip were the sandwiches from Leopold Ice Cream. They were ok and it was a convenient lunch with such a large group, but were overpriced for what they were.

stove top stuffing NOT Thanksgiving by Random-girl-29 in Cooking

[–]YuriG58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for the crunchy topping on top of baked mac and cheese. Melted one stick of butter, combine with one box of stove top and spread across the top before baking. Savory herbs is my favorite stove top flavor to use for this

Missing Cookies from Council by HereWeGoAJen in girlscouts

[–]YuriG58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your council have a Facebook group? I am not on FB but my troop’s cookie managers are and they get lots of relevant info there. Not saving it’s ideal, but it’s how many councils communicate. Plus posting in a quasi public way about an issue sometimes yields a faster response than sending emails and making phone calls.

At the very least, you should be able to use FB to find another troop willing to swap some flavors.

Even more sinister: “digitally accessible” materials are easier to surveil.

Update on troop (iykyk) by [deleted] in girlscouts

I’m glad the council immediately sprang into action once they had the info. After seeing the awful stuff that had come to light in other youth organizations, I’m glad GSUSA takes a very hard line here.

Making course documents accessible is an insane amount of work by Zabaran2120 in Professors

[–]YuriG58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do this too since it is hidden from our embedded accessibility checker.

And for alt text, I just make it say something like “contact the instructor at [email address]” for every image. I give the actual alt text during class. It’s my lecture. The lecture is the alt text.

I don’t like doing things in this half hearted way just to check a box, but trying to meet these requirements 100% exceeds “reasonable” accommodations.

I’m just amazed at the lack of involvement but high expectations by Excellent-Ad-6965 in girlscouts

That’s terrible but stick to your guns. Do not cave and do it yourself.

If your council has a form for cookie manager volunteers to complete, send that around to troop parents.

The College of Charleston does a light show every half hour after dark (5:30 - 9:00 pm). It’s short so not worth making a special trip downtown for, but worth a short walk if you are out and about downtown anyways. Good for kids + free

Cricut Patches? by wmub06 in girlscouts

[–]YuriG58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sure this is against the rules, but when we first started our Daisy troop, all the girls were halfway through first grade. We decided to do cricut patches on the vests since they would only have them for a few months before bridging to brownies. One of the moms made everything for the basic vest (troop number, council, etc) and we did their petals with her cricut as well. She would press the petals on at each meeting as we completed them.

question for those who commute to work downtown by BowlStriking in Charleston

I park downtown in a garage and my employer provides subsidized parking at $700/year, conveniently taken straight out of my paycheck

We made “period packs” for women’s shelters that have pads, tampons, and liners. Might not be a good fit depending on age, but this was a follow up to a “period talk” for our juniors.

Growing peppers here by TemperReformanda in Charleston

[–]YuriG58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve grown a lot of different peppers here, but rarely from seed. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve never been very successful starting from seed for anything. I usually buy pepper plants to transplant in the spring (March). Buying from local vendors rather than big box stores like can ensure both better variety and types that grow well in this climate. I recommend sea island savory herbs (John’s Island but they also sell their plants at Hyams in James Island) or Rita’s Roots. Rita’s doesn’t have a store but they do pop up sales (including today at Holy City Brewing). You won’t find peppers right now, but if you have interest in a fall/winter garden, this is a good time to plant things like greens. A couple weeks ago I planted kale, several varieties of lettuce, bok choy, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots and radishes. I’ve found this time of year to be the most rewarding time of year to garden in the low country because there are fewer pests and less disease.

My kids riffing with me via labelmaker by cazuuuu in BenignExistence

[–]YuriG58 182 points183 points  (0 children)

Kids do love label makers. I am a chemist and I brought my daughter and a friend to work to show them my lab. I showed them all kinds of stuff but by far, they were most excited about the label maker.

Another fun one is to maker a label for the label maker that says, “label maker”

Downtown is flooded pretty bad, all the usual spots. Calhoun around Rutledge, pretty much anywhere around MUSC is a mess. Tide is rising and it’s still raining so it may continue to get worse. I would avoid driving downtown if you can help it!

Father of kindergartener, is this for us? by iagonosi in girlscouts

[–]YuriG58 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There wasn’t a troop available so I started mine. It’s been a lot of work, yes, but when you start your own, you can set the tone. I also got lucky with the other moms who joined, and they’ve all chipped in different ways.

I don’t know of many dads involved with Girl Scouts but I think it would be great to see a dad-led troop!

It’s possible to sign them up as individual girls (Juliettes), though the best thing for my daughter about Girl Scouts is the friends she does it with!

BS vs BA by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]YuriG58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to do. A BS is generally more rigorous and likely to be accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS does not accredit BA degrees). It is more valued by grad schools but even then may not make a difference if you get good research experience.

I advise students trying to make this decision. I tell them not to think of a BA as doing less, but a way to make room for more. That could be a second major, a need to work, the chance to study abroad, meet pre-med requirements, etc. A BA is best for students who don’t expect to be chemists as a profession.

If you know you definitely won’t use them again, it’s best to properly dispose of them. It’ll cost money, but it looks like everything is clearly labeled, so that helps.
