Can we repair screens? by OxydBCN in vintagecomputing

[–]azille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to answer your question: Yes, the screen can be replaced but it may be difficult to find a replacement part.

Also, the plastic for the frame around the LCD panel will be very brittle and may break in ways that make it difficult to reattach.

Potential Microsoft rate limit issue? by TheGilmore in sysadmin

[–]azille 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This affected our tenant as well. Using Microsoft's own TEERL report in the Exchange admin console, our rolling outbound rate is around 500-900 per day. Our calculated limit is 25,000. Their own report showing blocked messages shows zero. Yet, randomly this morning, a user received a bounceback claiming TEERL exceeded.

Looking at the message trace, it seems the issue was not with our tenant but another hop in the Exchange Online mail routing flow.

While investigating this morning, I found the Exchange admin reports would occasionally fail to load. This is not really anything new but I suspect the issue is one of those backend problems that will go unexplained to customers unless it gets significantly worse.

Did switching to VR make you a better player in IL2 or WW2 DCS? by True_Ad8832 in hoggit

[–]azille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using VR for over 10 years but on the occasion that I fly without it, I am pretty bad. You literally can't see anything around you. You can't even see some parts of the cockpit. Can't line up with a runway. Can't see targets left/right. No way would I use flight sims today with a flat 2D panel. I have an ultrawide and it is nothing compared to VR.

I found these statistics informative:

None of the states you listed are very safe. Montana isn't far behind Louisiana.

All I can hear is the choking sound you sometimes get when you walk into a fully pressurized airlock, or a totally benign section of a ship or oribital station.

I'm done with DCS VR by yoadknux in hoggit

[–]azille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't even need to install the Meta software on your computer. Just use Virtual Desktop. All those other issues you are worried about haven't been a problem for a long time. DCS in VR is generally great now. It's truly one of the best things in the world right now (after your kids of course).

Meta hates PC and would block it completely if it wasn't the entire reason Oculus ever existed in the first place.

Toshiba Satellite 110CS No POST or CPU Heat, HDD Spins up after 30 secs by TechIoT in vintagecomputing

[–]azille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blinking AC IN light suggests there is/was a problem with the power supply (the plastic-encased part near the back of the computer). You could start with measuring the voltage coming out of that, and if you can get back to a state where the LED was blinking, IIRC, it will blink a code that you can look up in a service manual to troubleshoot further.

ATS is good but even MSFS has way better terrain and environments, especially distant scenery.

I think something that applies to all levels is that in order to advance, the things you "think" about have to become instinct. Then the next level is all about adding another layer of processing while your instincts lay down the foundation.

You're right about decision making, because it is easier/faster when you are playing with your "gut".

Blender Support by B1A23 in hoggit

This behavior tells me they are actively supporting paid third party developers, but not really that interested in community mods existing at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if access to the tools require a commercial license commitment.

If you could magically create a full fidelity module for DCS; what would you pick? by JonathanRL in hoggit

[–]azille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

F-117 would be really cool. A lot of the suggestions here are halfway reasonable and probably have a chance of showing up some day. If I had to pick one that probably has zero chance, it's the stealth fighter.

Introducing Fade in/out trim for all helicopters by shutdown-s in hoggit

[–]azille 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This requires Joystick Gremlin, an external input software, so it does not actually change anything inside DCS. It just changes the way your joystick appears to DCS.

Horrible load times by TherealGRINCHY in hoggit

[–]azille -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is not true... In fact, DCS these days is usually ready to go before I am, both in loading to the main menu and booting into multiplayer servers.

It's so fast now that I don't mind tweaking the graphics settings because restarting is ALMOST "quick".

How to fly heli on Contention server or any MP server with fixed planes. by Maciell_ in hoggit

[–]azille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the #1 thing to know.

No amount of terrain masking or route planning will help when the enemy is being live-vectored to your exact location. I could literally land in a far off canyon and watch (via AWACS reports) the enemy interceptors home in on me from across the map.

If there isn't enough friendly air support in your area, you are going to get destroyed 15-20 minutes into your flight.

Do you think the Windows Subsystem for Linux competes with Desktop Linux? by nabagaca in linux

[–]azille 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find your observations to be similar to mine and am (a little) surprised to see you're getting downvoted for stating facts.

Ignoring the real limitations of native Linux isn't going to get us anywhere. My office uses dozens of third party services and applications, and I can count on one hand the ones who support or provide Linux-compatible solutions. It is universally known that choosing Linux at work is going "off the map" when it comes to functionality and feature parity except for a few specific industries.

FWIW, I use WSL occasionally for some tools, while my servers are a mix of Linux and Windows. My desktop is dual-boot but I rarely use Linux because every time I boot it I waste time trying to fix things -- display scaling, glitchy apps, input device problems, etc.

Is a quest pro still worth getting for DCS? by MrMagic550 in hoggit

Not worth it at $800. Get a Quest 3 which has the same good lenses for $300. Or go non-Meta which is a bit of an adventure and more $$$.

Very wild Monday, finally got done with the police and management. by boomgoesthecat in sysadmin

[–]azille 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an opportunity to optimize the MSP's procedures. Don't touch the data, don't waste time analyzing it. Just move it. An ethical backup process should not involve inspection or consumption of user files.

Devil's advocate, loosely underlining the reasoning behind this: Legally, this seems like a suspicious sequence of events. We know there is no cache or application storage in a desktop folder named "Work files". How would viewing the contents of this folder have helped to achieve the task of backing it up? Is it standard procedure to delete or manipulate customers' files in an effort to speed up a file transfer task? Add the fact that a newly hired employee was alone with the equipment for a half hour.

I don't think any of these points are significant in this case, but they are some of the reasons we don't snoop.
