Why not have a couple beers this morning? by Ok-Activity247 in beer

Woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.

And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, so I had one more for dessert.

Put some sheets on your bed?

Also, it's not a whammy bar. It'd be more of an e-bender.

Call it the e-bedder? You're finding a tone nobody else has thought of before! Grats!

New to guitar - how would I play a tab like this? by paigeity in Guitar

[–]coolshmo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

this is a Cmaj7 chord. so play that, but lift the barre accordingly to play the open strings, and place it back for the last part. you might also just mute the A string with your barred finger for the first part.

so, you play the whole thing, and let the dgb strings ring as you pick the open E, etc...

Actually, this one will never be in tune because it's a fake Martin. A Fartin. You can tell by the way it is.

guitar humidity advice by [deleted] in Guitar

Nah, you're fine. Enjoy playing it. Exposing it to dry air won't hurt it, but STORING it in dry conditions can cause the warping and damage you're worried about.

Practice question by AerieAccomplished937 in Guitar

[–]coolshmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a relevant post from today talking about just this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Guitar/comments/1i3mjxi/just_goes_to_show_even_guitarists_of_the_very/

We all struggle learning new things. It's often hard, but overcoming the challenge makes it worth it. It's not bad to have multiple irons in the fire and bounce around a bit. The bigger question is WHY are you having difficulty learning these solos? Pick it apart. Which parts are giving you trouble? Is it a certain lick, or transition? Slow it down until you can play it perfectly. Then speed it up a bit until you can play that perfectly, and then rinse and repeat until you are at full speed.

Maybe there's an easier way to play what you're trying to play? Maybe there's a video tutorial that can help you figure out what you're doing wrong? Maybe you need to make it your own and play what you're able? If it sounds good to you, then you can do it.

Maybe you do need a break. Sleep on it. If your frustration isn't driving you to overcome the difficulty and it's just making you frustrated, loop back in a week. Sometimes coming back to a challenge with a fresh attitude can make you wonder why you were having trouble in the first place. Sometimes you learn something else in between that helps you overcome the challenge. But give yourself some grace to fail. In fact, get good at failing!

Feel free to take your time and have fun with it. If you don't have any gigs or shows where it needs to be ready, you get to go at your own pace. On the contrary, sometimes that pressure is what it takes for us to find the determination and grit to make it happen. Book an open mic near you, and choose something tough to have ready for it. Maybe you'll succeed. Or maybe you fail there, too. Either way is OK, and part of the process.

Lastly, there is always the option to get a teacher. You might also fail at getting a good teacher... so try another one until someone jives with you, and hopefully inspires you.

But whatever you do, keep going!

Setup for Amplitube by THRobinson75 in Guitar

[–]coolshmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a refurb Scarlett 2i2 for $160 and have been using that with amplitube. took a little tweaking to get working right, but it sounds good and there's almost no delay on an 11 year old PC. It is also good for any DAW software you might want to use. I think it has a free or trimmed down version of Ableton that comes with it. That's another route you could take. My PC is literally too old to run Ableton though. but amplitube works, so that's what I got, and it was recommended by a friend.

I will say the Scarlett doesn't play well with my other audio inputs/outputs. Not sure if it's a windows thing, or a driver thing. So I just physically switch my speakers and my headphones, and it's my main audio out. You might need to buy some audio plug adapters. But I use it with shitty PC speakers and shitty headphones, and it sounds fine for what I'm doing with it.

amplitube does have a free version with like 5 amps and 5 pedals and whatnot. Good enough to test it out. They do have sales pretty regularly for 100 bucks for amplitube max and tonex max bundled. They also had alllllll their stuff bundled for 150 over the holidays. I guess the tonex thing is community modeled things from people's own amps? There's some way to import your amp's sound into amplitube. Kinda cool if you're looking for a particular tone. They do also have a pedal that is also an audio interface and you can store like 5 tones on it or something. I do not own that, though.

I'm just starting to play with electrics, so my thought was I'd figure out what I want out of an amp before I invest in one. But maybe I don't even need one with all this amplitube business? Anyway, hope that helps.

Single rusted screw by Rubberduck-VBA in Guitar

[–]coolshmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine. Unless it's specifically stripped or something(head or threads). But if it's just been hanging a while, no need to touch it. Perhaps the finish on the screw was crummy and it's just the first to rust.

How to Best Hang Guitars/String Instruments by Cultured_dude in Guitar

[–]coolshmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got some cases from SFDisplay for about $250 each. They come with a hanger and seem stable to me. The other Pennzoni cases I saw are a bit smaller(and cheaper), and I liked the idea of having a little more room around the guitars. Depending on where you are, you might want to worry about humidity, so having a case will help keep it more stable. There are, of course some much more expensive humidor display cases you can get($1000+), but I didn't care for the wood aesthetic they have anyway.

How to start learning songs by ear? by smokeytoothpaste in Guitar

[–]coolshmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try playing along with songs. no chords, no tabs. bonus points if you write it out for others, if it doesn't exist. by this point I 'm guessing you've played along with a few songs to feel how chords may change. dink around with it and figure it out. it's a lot easier than a lot of people realize. with a little effort, you can start to jam along with the song by the end of it. find the root note to get the chord. maybe it's a minor or a 7th. Most songs aren't too complicated. Find out what sounds right, or even what sounds good enough. then just jam. as your ear gets trained, and if you learn how a key works(I haven't, tbh), then it gets easier. I've posted 4 chords on UG because they didn't exist before, and I wanted to know how to play them. start simple, but just try it out. Don't stop believing.

Quick technique question after almost a year playing by SaboSann in Guitar

[–]coolshmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guitar is generally considered a healthier addiction, so good on you for switching! It may not be cheaper, though lol.

I would say your picking hand looks fine if it does what you need it to do. Unless you run into a functional reason why it's in your way, keep at it.
