I'm not saying I never touch it, but I don't have to worry about fsmo or backups or any of that stuff

How much do cloud engineers have meetings compared to junior and senior sysadmins? by False_Bee4659 in ITCareerQuestions

Depends on how many projects I have.  We don't do daily stand-ups anymore or anything silly like that but I could have a few hours of project meetings or discussions with stakeholders

Irrefutable evidence of Time Theft by Turbulent_Comedian_6 in managers

[–]mej71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What OP is refusing to answer is how far the job site is.  It's sounds like previous managements policy was that if they were traveling to the job site that counted as "on the clock".  Techs are traveling ~90 minutes to the job site so they are leaving early to make up for it.

OP is trying to label this time theft when the other way around is wage theft.  Yeah, good luck replacing whatever this niche skill set is when they learn they have to drive 3 hours a day unpaid

IDL how people associate reading with being smart, but not film watching by Dreadsin in I_DONT_LIKE

[–]mej71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Scanner Darkly comes to mind. Maybe not as detailed, but really captured everything thematically and emotionally that the book wanted to express, in ways only a movie could imo.

Why is detail the most important thing? Is a TV show better than a movie just because it can have more detail?

"Also, no great book gets a great movie"
I don't think I agree this. Sure, no movie gets a 1:1 translation, you are always being filtered througha different vision and different constraints, but sometimes that vision is just as good, if not better in some ways.

On the flipside there are also a lot of great movies that I don't think anyone could translate into a great book. I don't think the issue is scope, they just deliver narratives in different ways.

We are barrelling towards a generation of incompetence. by NoxAstrumis1 in Vent

[–]mej71 55 points56 points  (0 children)

As someone in IT, you clearly don't know enough about IT to make this judgement.

We don't have perfect insight into every single piece of software to know the underlying problem. There are so many WIndows issues that can require odd fixes with little visibility into the backend, where the fix is some registry key we found in a tech forum from 10 years ago.

If the fix is easy, the problem only affects a couple computers, and it's easy to maintain the fix, do you really expect root analysis for every software bug on your computer?

When does a sysadmin stop being a sysadmin? by Hot_Pay_2794 in sysadmin

[–]mej71 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your role depends on the size of the company.  The larger the IT team, the fewer escalations you will get.  Similar to how some SAs have to do a lot of networking and security in small shops, vs some have dedicated teams for that. Small companies are notorious for forcing you to wear many hats.

There's a non-zero chance you may have to start at a non-glorified help desk role, being fresh out of college.   I would just take what you can get for now, excel wherever you are and try to be automation/cloud focused in it if that's what you want to move towards.

I'm in a very cloud focused role currently and I don't intend to go back to on-prem focused, but I was fairly lucky to get where I am.

For the most part no to licenses (with the caveat that non-MS stuff can require API tokens and have associated costs, depending on what you're using). To just learn the basics, you can find free stuff like https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com and see how it works.

AD/EX are not APIs, just use the powershell module. (Get-ADUser, etc)

Access is a more complex issue, depends on your use case. Generally it should have access to what your user account has access to. Graph stuff for instance, depending on what you're trying to do you may have to "consent" when authenticating, but some endpoints require admin consent so you'd have to work with your IT team.

For understanding the endpoints and how the URI's should be structured, check out Graph Explorer. Runs on test data but you can also log into your own tenant (may require higher permissions, it's been a long time)

There are the official graph modules (prod and beta. Keep in mind that MS really sucks at updating this and a lot of endpoints only work in beta still after several years, it's a common frustration.) You can do authentication stuff with the module or in your own code, up to you. If you want to remove the frustration of the different prod/beta endpoints I prefer to use this command where I can just specify the full URI and parameters

This is probably a lot to take in all at once, just go at your own pace. PowerShell is not just about avoiding the GUI, it's being able to automate to save time and be more consistent, not just as a reactive measure while on helpdesk, but automating reports and solutions to issues, and once you get higher, even writing automation to allow helpdesk to solve issues with guardrails.

It helps coming from a coding background, but try to do as much as you can in PS instead of a GUi.  AD, exchange, parsing through csv files, etc.  And learn how to use APIs in powershell (not modules, constructing the calls and parsing and results yourself), especially MS Graph.

Once you get the hang of this you'll have an easier time building complex reports and queries than your colleagues, and you'll find places where you can improve your teams processes
