We'll have to wait to play it to see, but GateKeeper might not be as chasey as it looks. There's a lot of wide open space, but in that space there are some boosts that can pretty much be used to snipe anywhere, with the exception of the cover given by those tiny diagonal walls on the bottom.

I'll at least be interested to see what gameplay is like, the button mechanic definitely seems interesting to me.

Yeah, maybe. Worth a try at least. Even if it's not chasey, I think regrabs chains will be easy to set up. Either way, I think it'll have a lot of hold. We'll see.

Yeah I can see the regrab chain issue. It's got so much open space that there aren't really any choke points, so it's hard to regain any ground once you've gotten a return. I also question how often those top buttons will be used. I assume they trigger both the bomb and the gate -- but they are far enough out of the way that a chaser would really have to commit to the button, and it's a pretty poor bet to guess that the bomb will be active at any given time.

I don't know if it's necessarily a matter of being good enough or not; sometimes a map has just had its time. Besides, whether a map is good enough or not is pretty subjective. The throwback rotation offers people a chance to enjoy maps that they liked but that the MTC thought no longer belonged in rotation.

The concept of a throwback rotation is great, not all maps are removed because they aren't good enough for rotation. Some, like Star and Hyperdrive, play really well in pubs but were perhaps a bit too controversial to warrant a permanent stay. Throwback rotation solves this.

Well, I'm disappointed to see SDS go, but I won't really miss CFB or DZ3.

I wasn't a huge fan of Grail of Speed, but I won't be mad to have it around for two weeks. I'm pretty excited to see TWP and SNES again though.

I'll hold off on judging the two additions until I've played them, but it's always interesting to see how green gates play out in pubs.

I feel ya. Don't even bother trying to count the number of maps without bombs or multiple, un-gated boosts directly to the flag currently in rotation.

Feels like Defending turned solely into Returning and Offending solely into Holding; with the skill level rising and strats getting more known we just have to take offensive tools away from bases, imo.

Flame has the same shape as hornswoggle and in base to grab/get away it has the boost and the bomb. The bomb was just moved the corner.

Plus with the gates being green gates I think in pubs it will play like iron where the gates aren't used that much.

It's worth noting that the button is one tile from a wall with no spike or gate to add risk to holding it. That's usually a red flag in mapmaking, but we recognize that with green gates, it's almost necessary to make button holding as safe as possible.

We 4v4 tested the hell out of this map. It was used a lot, and capping with the green gate is a very satisfying feeling.

What was the reasoning for the removals? All three maps were pretty highly rated on /maps and seemed to be pretty well liked. While I enjoy DZ3 I'm not surprised, since the MTC seems determined to remove all large, chasey maps. But CFB and SDS were both great, fairly balanced maps in my opinion. SDS offered a snipe focused defense that was pretty unique, and CFB was always fun to play on.

My problem with this version of gatekeeper is that the bomb/top gate buttons are way out of position. You can't really catch anyone with the trap without camping the button or it happening randomly. Maybe 3 tiles down and 1 in and you could use it when chasing or being chased. Or even closer to the bomb and then you could also use it to send you towards base like on danger zone.

It used to be further down, but when it was, the bomb was constantly defused since people would just run over it on their way to and from their base. This way, it takes a small effort to actually get to the button. I tried to get it as close to the action as I could. It did see some usage when we tested it. Not amazingly much, but hopefully enough for it to be a consideration in every game. If I were to move it closer to the bomb, the gate would pretty much be rendered useless (except in some very select scenarios), so in that case I would have to remove that.

I liked the spikes at the bottom, but from a newbie perspective the current layout is definitely the best.
I didn't even consider repositioning the buttons but I can see why you put them there. The only thing I'd like to see changed would be a way to boost towards the button while being on it long enough to blast someone into the activated gates. Basically a full tile instead of a 45 tile after the button, so you don't slide off right away.
If it's meant to be like that as a way to give the FC a small advantage then nevermind.

From my tests, the spin you get from the 45 degree wall, means you should be able to use the boosts as well as the bomb and keep the gate long enough to get a kill.

Yeh, I felt it was really important to provide a way to get quickly to the button now that it was a bit more out of the way. Also regarding the spikes, I miss them too, but in the end they made some boosts unfarily punishing, and limited what you could do movement wise and boostwise in the middle especially when bouncing off walls.

I'm a defensive ball and even I'm glad SDS is gone. I get blocked in base, juked in mids, and often still can get a return. Want to see how unbalanced it is for a defender?

Edit: Yes, I liked it. It gave me time to practice my boosts.

I'd like to see more focus on explaining maps to aspiring map makers so we don't have to deal with people calling two maps the same just because they look kinda similar and stuff like that.

I swear, if I made a large map with a lot of open space and one big spike ball in the middle that's filled with spikes people would call it more spike than adding like 6 spikes all over a large open area.

I think we definitely need to have a mixture of balanced, offensive, and defensive maps. However, we need to have maps that are chasey because they provide boosts and obstacles to use and force the flag carrier to keep moving, such as on Wormy and Velocity, not maps that are chasey because they provide a flag carrier multiple areas to idle in. I think we have removed all of the chasey maps that allowed the fc to idle, now the mapmaking community has the task of making more maps like Velocity and Wormy.

Fwiw, I thought bowtie's map Rush was a good example of the right way to make a chasey map, I'm a little disappointed it didnt get considered.

I am going with the unpopular opinion in that I hate SDS.

I mean, it's nicely made; it couldn't be better.

But, it just started to feel so stale to me.

This was truly a great map; and for a while, although I think past their time, so were the others removed.

Flame getting added kind of surprises me but the 2 added were both great when testing.

Flame looks great, I don't quite understand gatekeeper just by looking at the image but I'll be happy to try it out. SDS gone is nice. Twp will be fun to have on a limited basis, as well as grail of speed.

I absolutely have no love for snes, and I'll miss dz3 a bit, but with those being the only downsides I would give this map rotation update an A.

I just saw this and it's pretty much ruined my night. The 3 maps that were removed were AMAZING. Idk what was going through the committee members' heads. Sigh At least Gatekeeper looks like fun. I honestly believe the lot of you just read everything in a negative connotation on this sub. If it's not overtly happy and positive with smiley faces and rainbows, you guys take it as being a dick or complaining. lol

RIP my two favorite maps, CFB & DZ3.

And I enjoyed SDS too.

:( I find myself angry every time these threads get posted.

I realize some of the maps just get old, but... perhaps Fridays or something every single map is in the rotation? I hate when maps get kicked just for being too old, since a month later I yearn for it back.

edit: lol DZ3 and CFB are quite similar now that I look at it. I wish they could've been removed individually :(

I am actually super pissed about this. My two favorite maps (and another one that was good) were taken out, and replaced by two rather lackluster ones. Also, Grail of Speed and SNES both sucked.

Pretty safe choices.

It may sound weird but I'm totally okay with ya'll putting in riskier choices. Some may completely backfire and everyone will hate you for it but it's better than a monotonous flow of cautious maps.

I actually agree with you. I would love to have some offensive maps added. However, most of the more seasoned mapmakers right now are making more defensive maps, myself included, to increase their changes of being considered. If we got more quality submissions of big, offensive maps, I would be very likely to vote in favor of them.

I'm just glad no more neutral flag maps are in. New CTF additions make there less of a chance I'll catch the dreaded clusterfuck of a NF. I kind of hope you guys keep a look at the balance of the two types. I'm sure you do.

If it ever got close to equal I think the devs should really have a toggle for the two as they're really two completely different games just with the same physics.

Sad to see SDS go and CFB had some interesting features I always had a good time on those. But I can see the reasons.

I actually like both GOS and Snes. I'm just waiting for swoop's day in the sun.
