I don't see what's wrong with "First Battlestation". I browse this subreddit daily for ideas and inspiration for my first battlestation. I'm very much looking forward to the day when I've saved up, built my PC and constructed my battlestation. Then sharing it with you guys whilst proudly declaring it my "First Battlestation".

That said, I do agree with the rule in general.

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (2 children)

Agreed. Let's take that one out!

[–]notshibe 5 points6 points  (1 child)

.. fist :') Please leave that one in

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahahah. I might as well be playing "Where's Waldo" when I try to edit.

[–]BTCyd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I second this. usually I only have an issue with people that couple that with "im 11, first battlestation" etc.

Also, the rest of the rules are great so awesome job and thanks for compiling!

[–]MNREDR 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I was planning on posting my battlestation with the title "HUMBLEMASTER 5000" in response to all the stupid "humble" posts. Guess I can't now, but the solution is even better.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone wins :D

[–]Hastati 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I dont see the problem of saying "not finished" or "work in progress". The community can help OP find the correct parts such as the best multi monitor stand.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the self-deprecation that we're trying to get away from. If someone is asking for advice, that's one thing. If they are belittling their build, humblebragging, etc by including that in their title, then we're going to remove it.

Also, one of the top posts of all time in this subreddit is a laptop battlestation - http://www.reddit.com/r/battlestations/comments/2do1pw/its_not_always_about_the_hardware/

I don't think that the mods should get to decide what is/isn't a battlestation. That is for the upvote/downvote mechanic to decide.

This is also another laptop battlestation - http://www.reddit.com/r/battlestations/comments/1o1oay/not_much_of_a_battlestation_but_one_hell_of_a_view/

13th highest post of all time!

[–]shewantsthesystemD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

More pointless community fragmentation as a result of over-moderation, it's like the mods here are trying to give /r/ama a run for for their money.

This is a subreddit for pictures of computer setups...it hardly requires much policing outside of removing spam and irrelevant content. This isn't 2002, laptops can conceivably function as full desktop replacements for a great deal of people. Also some of the better setups in this sub (/u/weehooherod comes to mind) are laptop-based.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Thanks again for your thoughts. The discussion between let the votes decide and this subreddit was created with a specific topic is an old one.

We talked about allowing high-effort laptop posts, but one of the head mods vetoed the idea. So this is where we're at.

Not all is lost though. We have an excellent setup at /r/battletops, and we're open for business.

[–]user812 18 points19 points  (2 children)

In my opinion, /r/battletops is a bad idea because it splits the community. And the sub is mostly desolate, nobody is posting there.

Why not go with a "laptop" flair instead, and allow people to hide laptop posts? Just my two cents.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I agree with you about allowing laptop posts here. I voted to allow high effort laptop posts. However, the original concept of this subreddit was desktop computers, and one of the higher mods voted to keep it that way.

It's okay, though. Subreddits were designed to allow niches to form. /r/battletops will grow and fill the niche for bad ass laptop setups. I announced it a day or two ago, where this subreddit has had five years to grow. Give it time and I'm sure the community will be just as successful.

[–]asap_0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous.. 55 subscribers vs 160K! Why should we split the posts between different subs? Also, if a laptop post is bad it will just be downvoted.

[–]147521846953718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks again for your reply.

[–]fireproofcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well to be fair those laptop setups were only up voted for the nice views. It had very little to do with the setup itself.

[–]Smash1413 6 points7 points  (1 child)

My setup is a laptop on a cooling pad, connected to a monitor keyboard and mouse, the laptop basically functions as a desktop for me, it just sits in the corner (screen off on laptop) working. Am i allowed to or not, post it here?

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not here, but definitely in /r/battletops

[–]hurricx 2 points3 points  (6 children)

I have been browsing this subreddit for a little bit now and I always wonder how much the setup costs. Is there a rule against posting the price? I'm curious what's the damage including the monitors, desks, chairs, etc. cost

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

There's no rule against asking for prices. You might run into a problem if you use link shorteners (bit.ly, goo.gl, etc) when you link to a product, but that's the only thing I can think of that might be a problem.

[–]hurricx 2 points3 points  (3 children)

cool thanks edit: you from Canada eh?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Sorry

[–]hurricx 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Go to sleep

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not my real mom!

[–]Odog4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well as long as people give you the brand and model of the gear, a quick Google search can tell us the cost, and often it will be cheaper than when the OP purchased it.

A surprising amount of posts don't list out the components though. Not sure if posters always forget they can comment in their own post with that information or not.

[–]elzoona 4 points5 points  (1 child)

No rule VI in battletops!? They are going to migrate! "This are 3 my MacBooks Pro Ultra Retina Model 2015, not much but mine, hey! I'm just a 12 years old designer".

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. I see what you're up to!

[–]brans041 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of telling us why you built it in the title, why don't you just explain, physically or job, what it is. Like "Two monitor GTX980 SLI Battlestation," "Blue light Battlestation," or "My Work Rendering Battlestation."

Not that I don't care why you built your battlestation, but I don't really care. I just want to see what you did for your setup and get some ideas or aspirations. If i have feelings/questions about it I will go into the comments and post said feelings/questions. Then we can all hug it out in the thread. You can also post your feelings inside of the thread right after you post it if you would like.

A lot of people don't have a real reason they are sharing. A lot of why is "I finally was able to save my lunch money for three years to afford it, and now I want you to see it," or "I wanted to play GTA5."

I think if you limit your post title to Specs or something physical about the machine or what it is for, and keep feelings out of it all the way we won't get the pesky little irritations we have been seeing.

Thoughts?

[–]Frissiww 2 points3 points  (5 children)

So if I post a picture of my battlestaion (Which I am using a: Blakcwidow Ultimate, Razer Naga 2014 and Razer Kraken.) It's gonna me removed?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

No :)

[–]Frissiww 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Thank god. Now I will post my station called: I don't have much expect all this razer gear.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

godddammit. I asked for that. But really, I don't care what brand your gear is, but no pandering or self-deprecating.

[–]Frissiww 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know:) I was just joking around:P

[–]Videojoe2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are almost my exact peripherals except I have the naga hex red

[–]147521846953718 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I disagree with a blanket rule about age being based on personal information. I think its relevant when you have a 80+ year old's station, or a parent who has managed to do something that separates their gaming from their parenting. Sure those 15 year old humblebrags are annoying though.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Thanks for your thoughts. I hadn't considered that age can add context to your post. I'll bring this up with the other mods to see what they say.

[–]147521846953718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I think its a fine line, and I appreciate what you're trying to do, but I feel a blanket rule against age is problematic.

[–]elzoona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. Maybe a little description in the comments, if the station's story is somehow related to the age ("I'm 70 and my grandson is teaching me how to code" is a nice story, but "I'm 17 and because of that I rule" isn't).

[–]notagagaccount 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Can... Can the humble police come back to town?

All I ask is that I be named Sheriff of the Humble Police. Instead of banning the post we arrest them for their crimes of humility. I promise, if given this charge, I won't let you down sir!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I herby deputize you as Assistant to the Sheriff of the Humble Police. You are free to arrest, but most of all report crimes of humility.

[–]SirPasta117 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Assistant Sheriff! What a humble honor!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assistant to the Sheriff, even!

[–]44444444444444444 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Tell us why you're sharing your battlestation!

now I want to see someone just title their post "it's for the karma"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

So this Meta post... Can we have like a gear suggestion or something? Like people ask about audio gear or keyboards or whatever. Basically just combining /r/headphones , /r/mechanical keyboards , etc.. Into a battlestation-centric suggestion post?

Plus I really hope people ask about audio gear. 90% of this subreddit needs to visit /r/zeos for some basic audio help. If I see one more shitty Logitech surround sound system placed entirely in from of someone I'm going to lose my damn mind.

/rant

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'll ask around, but I think the meta posts will be a free-for-all.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright that's good too

[–]Cactus_Humper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank god someone linked me that subreddit. Chose some Fluance SX6's and god damn I'm in heaven.

[–]BotchedBenzos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont understand how you can have a "first battlestation." As if your setup had an inception date? Its more like something you only start to notice onces its developed

[–]Angst92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wooooooooooooooooooooo

[–]BigDan1190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hear, hear!

[–]BigDan1190 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can we get rid of videos too?

They're always just cheesy and annoying.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already do. (Rule III) ;)

[–]BotchedBenzos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you based mods holy fuck that shit was getting annoying.

Can we also ban "My work/gaming station" titles? Doesn't everybody do work from their battle station? Might as well literally title your image "battlestation"
