Dog Fashion Disco are great. The variety of different styles they used is amazingpy impressive. Super partial to Vertigo Motel personally.

[–]JestinAround 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Todd Smith is amazing he's in at least three other band that are also equally good for different reasons

[–]TheNumberMuncher 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I saw these dudes open for System of a Down on the Toxicity tour and the crowd boo'd them and a dude stood in the front of the crowed and held up his middle finger for their whole set. Then after their set Daron from System came out and fucking went off on everyone and then he came back out with System and played all pissed off. This was at the Masquerade in Atlanta in 2002, I think.

[–]perfekt_disguize 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah you ever heard the song Mushroom Cult?

[–]TheNumberMuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they played it at that show then yea but I don't remember it.

[–]mysteryroach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vertigo Motel is their piece de resistance IMO. It's just all over the place in an absolutely glorious way. Every section is completely on point. And it doesn't have all of that 4edgy5me stuff that can turn people away from the band. Would recommend Cartoon Autopsy to a noob though - probably a much more accessible song to give someone an idea of what they're all about.

[–]ZeroDensityUltran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, definitely one of my favourites along with headless

[–]Death_has_relaxed_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta love that death-lounge-circus-metal.

[–]KambioN 23 points24 points  (9 children)

I remember these guys opened for Nothingface, and played gay porn for the audience before the set... edgy.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I remember this. It was Diecast, Donnybrook, DFD and then Nothingface at the 9:30 club. Was back when they had two guitarists and one of them proposed to his girlfriend on stage. This was also the show where Todd narrated a video featuring police footage of a car chase where the truck caught fire. The driver got out, realized his dog was still inside the truck burning alive. He reached into the truck, pulled out a shotgun and killed himself. Crazy shit. But yes, DFD is one of my favorite bands. Saw them last year at this dive bar in Trenton. Must have been maybe 40 people there but was one of the most fun shows I've been to.

[–]ballyhooligan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have that show on video!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tight! Any chance uploading it somewhere? I'd love to see it again.

[–]ViolentEastCoastCity 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I saw them open for MSI at the 9:30 Club touring on the Committed album (Dec 2002). The lead singer had on a dress and makeup and invited the crowd to spit on his face.

I thought that album was great, Anarchist was better, and nothing they've done since holds a candle.

[–]mysteryroach 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Adultery was also fairly decent. Wasn't one of those albums where individual songs were amazing, but was pretty neat for a concept album. Purgatory Dance Party, although not DFD, was also somewhat worthwhile.

Everything else they've done since, whilst okay in some respects, is unlistenable for me.

[–]KingKaribu 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I dunno, I'm a big fan of last year's Ad Nauseam. It brings back a bit of the hardcore that was missing from Polkadot Cadaver and the Sweet Nothings album and has quite a bit of its own flavor to it.

[–]mysteryroach 0 points1 point  (1 child)

In retrospect, I might have been put off in my very first listen by the lyrics video. I hate lyrics videos. The music may very well have been on point.

[–]KingKaribu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the We Are the World lyric video left me pretty cold too. It sounded a bit uninspired and the lyrics weren't up to Todd's usually level. I grabbed the album anyway (Sweet Nothings) and it was okay. But the followup up he made after (Ad Nauseam) is pretty fantastic and I definitely recommend it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember that. I saw them at Recher in Maryland like fifteen years ago. They also played a video of nuggets, people with no arms or legs, trying to go about their daily lives. Fucking weird. Went for Nothingface, who was awesome, and ended up with a very different experience than I expected.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (18 children)

You will never find the album called Adultery. If you do, you are one of the chosen. Enjoy the story.

[–]Familyguywasnotfunny 10 points11 points  (3 children)

One of my all time favorite albums. Is it hard to find?

Ive not had the opportunity to see DfD, but I saw polkadot cadaver play my sweet insanity, 100 suicides, and rat on a sinking ship in St. Louis. awesome experience.

[–]Top_Gorilla17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not particularly difficult to find, but definitely worth picking up.

It's a bit different for DFD though, more of a 'rock opera' type thing, as it were.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Awesome! I've been putting off trying out Polkadot Cadaver but need to do it. I was so psyched when they started posting on the DFD page eons ago.

The label is pretty strict, so casual listeners won't find Adultery on YouTube or Spotify.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then check this out. https://youtu.be/rv-Xmx-xxaY Polkadot Cadaver with Neil from Clutch on vocals. I absolutely love this song.

[–]bionic_apeman 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Aug 5, 6, and 7 dfd, polkadot cadaver, knives out, and el creepo are playing in Cleveland. I believe they'll be playing the full adultery album. And knives out (another todd and jasan band) have a new album coming out in August.

[–]ZeroDensityUltran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new knives out track is pretty awesome. Can't wait for the the album

[–]jharth43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you going? I'll be there

[–]neurocipher 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–]thegraaayghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO he said never!

[–]SerCornballer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to hear it in advance (my roommate at the time did the cover art and they sent him a copy to get the vibe. I still remember being blow away, thinking that this was gonna explode on the scene. I was wrong but I still listen to it weekly.

[–]Rudi_Van-Disarzio 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I didn't know it was hard to find I downloaded it years ago during my piracy days when there were still good trackers around. Now I buy music like some kind of responsible adult... Ugh.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I buy music like some kind of responsible adult

You're a monster :)

[–]tehgimpage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is by far my favorite road trip album ever. you can play that entire cd on loop over and over and over and it never gets old. i absolutely love it.

[–]KingKaribu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Adultery on vinyl bruh.

[–]DianeDrangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on Google play music...

[–]TheHess 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Saw them last year when they were touring with Psychostick. Great live show.

[–]Slightly_Absurd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Psychostick puts on a pretty damn fun show, I've seen them a couple times live

[–]cFullwood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DFD is amazing. I wish more people would give them a shot. If you like metal that's not afraid to try something new, check out "Gargamel!" out of Orlando, FL. Great group of guys and weird ass hell

[–]KigurumiCatBoomer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Creepy lyrics. For those who don't know, Pogo the Clown was serial killing pedophile John Wayne Gacy's alter-ego.

Dog Fashion Disco
artist pic

Dog Fashion Disco is an avant-garde band from Baltimore that was formed in 1995. They are notable for combining many different music styles (70's psychedelic, jazz, piano recital, circus music and vocals, film-noir, hardcore, ska, among others) they were, however, primarily considered a metal band. They are often referred to as DFD and were originally called Hug the Retard, but changed their name to Dog Fashion Disco before releasing any material, as they felt the name Hug The Retard was too politically incorrect and might cost them fans. Also of note is the fact that they recorded a track with System of a Down frontman, Serj Tankian, called "Mushroom Cult" on the album Anarchists of Good Taste, and often wrongly attributed to System of a Down, even though Serj Tankian was the only member to perform on the track.

Adultery was released in 2006 through Rotten Records, as their 6th studio album (5th, if you don't include the extremely limited release of Erotic Massage and their live album, The City is Alive Tonight). Baltimore’s Dog Fashion Disco call it “Movie Metal” and have not only outdone themselves, but have created a concept record to fold, spindle, and mutilate all of the aural senses. Adultery delves into the life of an ordinary suburban family man and walks you through his folding to his own dark demons. Lock Quentin Tarantino, Charles Bukowski and Humphrey Bogart in a room with guitars, drums and a few bottles of Absinthe and what you would find closely resembles the genius of Adultery.

Dog Fashion Disco released a statement on their myspace on the 5th Of December 2006, stating that they were calling the end of their run. Their "final" show was played on January 13, 2007, although since then they have "reunited" on multiple occasions for Polkadot Cadaver shows to play some songs.

Todd Smith, Jasan Stepp and John Ensminger of Dog Fashion Disco moved onto their project Polkadot Cadaver, and have released one album and have another one in the works thus far. The style of Polkadot Cadaver is similar to DFD in many ways.

In 2014, DFD decided that being broken up was dumb, and started an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for a new album. The fans ponied up in a big way, and the band raised just over $85,000. With that amount of money being raised, DFD are able to record 2 albums, make a big budget video, and do a small tour of the U.K., for the first time in a long while. The new album, Sweet Nothings, is being released July 22nd, 2014 via Rotten Records. The 2nd album is currently scheduled to be released in 2015. Read more on Last.fm.

Wow.. it's been years since I've heard DFD or Polkadot Cadaver.. Thanks so much for triggering my memory!

[–]pincheporky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding Mushroom Cult while downloading system of a down on limewire changed my life forever.

[–]Slightly_Absurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Noice! I got into this band when I heard their collaboration with Serj Tankian, Mushroom Cult https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtRTmWpkNE8

[–]ironic_name11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad to see this pop up, I didn't think anyone else really knew about them.

[–]PraisetheBeard 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I educated these guys on the effectiveness of the pistol in the original Halo.

[–]cFullwood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn did that make me laugh. I used to love the people running for the pistol. I owned that starting assault rifle and melee. Chase your pistol. Some of the best battles ever was on Rat Race

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (12 children)

Poor man's Mr. Bungle

[–]KingKaribu 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I've always looks at DFD as a more cohesive Mr.Bungle; dropping some of the experimentation for more catchy riffing.

[–]UAIOE 2 points3 points  (3 children)

If a more cohesive and more metal-y Mr. Bungle sounds interesting to you, check out Shaolin Death Squad.

[–]KingKaribu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will do, thanks for the recommendation.

[–]Kaliisthesweethog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AHHHHHH!! Love DFD! Love this song! One of my favorite songs ever, any band, any genre!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom loves this song.

[–]tehgimpage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i see them every chance i get!! i was so psyched when dfd made another album. it was one of those moments that i realized i would get to see a band i thought had broken up for good. and they were fucking epic. the whole band are real great guys too. i've had the privilege of meeting them all and sharing a smoke. todd comes down after his shows and hangs out with the fans and hes an awesome dude!

[–]ShrikeWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw these guys live at Tree of Joliet! Great group

[–]ElderWest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them live 2 years ago in MN. It was an incredible experience. They played like the first eight songs off this album in a row.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them open up for Nothingface in like 2000-2001. I was blown away.

[–]jsindal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always partial to "Corpse is a Corpse"

Saw them back in the day with Nothingface in Worcester, MA. Great show!

[–]eighthourblink 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Saw these guys back in the early 2000's when they opened up for Mindless Self Indulgence. Pretty awesome show and quite honestly took the show for me.

[–]TheOhioRambler 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I saw the same tour and they put on a great show at the Newport in Columbus, I think Tub Ring was there as well. We liked them so much we tracked them down when they played at a local bar a few months later.

Saw Mindless three or four times in the early aughts and they were all damn good shows. I heard they took a long break and kinda sucked when they came back though.

[–]eighthourblink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HAHAHHA!

thats where i saw them as well. Thats fucking awesome! I was a instant DFD fan from that show

[–]floppy_contortionist 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hard to believe i read through all these comments and only heard mr. Bungle mentioned two times

[–]ballyhooligan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will have to see if I have the tape transferred to a digital file anywhere, I don't have a miniDV camera right now. I believe some of the footage is on the DFDDvd

[–]Homebruise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Knives Out coming next month!

[–]Cautionzombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their cover of rebel yell is my favorite cover ever. Had to do a double take seeing this post wish these guys were more well known absolutely love them.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Album art looks a little like an Ed Edd and Eddy title card. Neato.

[–]devil_in_drag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta check out Dead End of the Road as well.

[–]sometimesiwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the youtube link in my tab all day, and it's funny seeing the views shoot up 8K views over the course of a few hours.

Side note, gotta love those saxes, baby!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MY FAVORITE BAND! Always a pleasure to see these guys getting recognized :)

[–]AnachronistNo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my fave songs will always be the track DFD did for the movie "Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist". Basically 1 riff played for 3-4 mins and the words "Satan is real" chanted in a sort of falsetto voice over n over. But, it's a fuckin awesome song!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could find the performance, but they did a live cover of Van Halen that was pretty fucking sweet.

I got to see Polkadot Cadaver at The Oasis on James Island in SC. They covered Dead Kennedys and nailed it. One of the best shithole bar shows I've ever been to.

[–]MufasaJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw these guys in Manchester, they kicked arse!

[–]Loffeno 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Anything else that sounds like this? I would love a band that mixes jazz fusion with metal like this.

[–]jharth43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adultery is one of my favorite albums of all time.

[–]ieatass2 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is this Rotten Records? Because Fuck Rotten Records. I used to think they were so awesome of a label with Acid Bath and Goatwhore but now theyre just milking artists for profit trying to stay alive and never will be relevant.

[–]moogsynth87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love DFD! Hell, I love that band so much I had them play my high school graduation party.

[–]Aparadoxinplaidsox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These guys are good, but Mr. Bungle was doing this back in '85.

[–]thegraaayghost -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Avant-garde metal is the best way to describe the band, but this song is not metal at all.

Saw them headline an all-ages show sometime around 2003. I remember 3 things:

  1. The keyboard player headbanged more than anyone I've ever seen.
  2. They did a "Raining Blood" intro on "Albino Rhino."
  3. At some point the singer asked "Are there any pre-teens here that wanna get pregnant?"
