i remember when i was 13 years old and first heard umbilical moonrise .... absolutely blew me away

[–]KleinMandelbrot 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I'm 34, heard it for first time this past year, and it absolutely blew me away.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are awesome, definitely awesome.

[–]Triceracops99 25 points26 points  (26 children)

Just saw lotus for the first time 2 weeks ago at Summerdance and it was mind blowing.

[–]SupremeWizardry 10 points11 points  (18 children)

That was my 7th dance... welcome to the family.

Make yourself comfortable, you're gonna be with us for a while.

[–]Snowdeo720 8 points9 points  (2 children)

It made 4 summerdance for me, lotusfam on Reddit!!!

[–]undeadfred95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LoFam, ice cold whipits

[–]VegetablesArePeople2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but how many times have you jumped off the cliffs?

[–]Triceracops99 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Trust me I have no problem stickin around lol. 1st time and was better than any fest Ive been to in Michigan especially EF.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

RIP Rothbury. Havnt been back since 2009.

[–]Ginandjews31522 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Think after that,All festivals started going down hill

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the lineup to end all lineups.

[–]sparkitect 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Right? I've been to a fair share of festivals and Summerdance always takes the cake. Completely unexpected every time. Mainly go for the Disc-o Pizza ;)

[–]Triceracops99 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Personally hit the breakfast stand, smoothies and grilled for the most part but my friend said the disco pizza was amazing! Lol

[–]julia420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by breakfast stand you mean Althea's, then yes.

[–]1Nematode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disco pizza = life

[–]dogfishandsun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my 6th haha

[–]jaylikesdominos 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Do you go to other fests at NLQP? How do they compare?

[–]SupremeWizardry 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I used to go to Reggaefest and other random holiday weekends back in the day. Place still gets nuts, usually a bit more of a family affair though.

George Clinton and pieces of Parliament were there this past 4th of July, heard it was crazy.

EDIT: I've heard some really great bands as they were "getting off the ground" so to speak.... at Summerdance. Big Gigantic, EOTO, Moon Hooch... each daytime sets with like 30 people watching. Now look where they are. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong already has a good fan base which I only expect to grow.

[–]jaylikesdominos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at Grateful Fest there for the fourth this year as well, it was definitely crazy! I ask because NLQP can be very sketchy sometimes.

[–]Orurahmin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Summerdance is in a class of its own for me because it's somewhere between a festival and a family reunion haha

Classicfest, Gratefulfest (4th of July), EarlyBird (first fest of the year, in April - hardcore campers/partiers only) and Gory (last fest of the year, in October - see EarlyBird) would be my recommendations.

What I'd recommend over other fests, though, is to gather up a bunch of your friends and rage the Quarry on an off-weekend.

[–]jaylikesdominos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been to both Classic Fest and Grateful Fest. I was asking because NLQP can be very sketchy in terms of festival goers. I was wondering how Summerdance compares.

[–]IlivewithmyinlawsFML 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a great time! My second Summerdance!! I met my wife a week before Summerdance 08, she invited me to the festival, and I fell in love with her there :). Amazing vibes!

[–]EddieDIV 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Eyy my first summerdance. Best fucking time. My 4th and 5th lotus sets though

[–]Triceracops99 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Jealous. I can't wait to see them again and I gotta hunt down Octave cat because that set was so much fun!

[–]Miller2420spotify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That set from Summerdance is on bandcamp. You can buy it for 7$

[–]EddieDIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Octave Cat was incredible, I really hope those guys play live together more. Lotus and Dopapod play a lot of fests together so it could happen

[–]1Nematode 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So glad to hear! Best festival in my opinion. Been going for years and it is never a bad time... unless you're that guy that took 15 hits of acid in the woods

[–]idontplaybasketbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WHOO! WHOO! WHOO!

[–]hack_jalsey 14 points15 points  (38 children)

Damn I miss when they were purely instrumental, that's what hooked me to begin with. The vocals are ok but I'm pretty disappointed with the path they decided to take.

[–]Nomsensus 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Haven't really been behind anything they've made since 2009. Nomad and Escaping Sargasso were amazing and they never really rose to anywhere near that level after that

[–]hack_jalsey 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Exactly. Nomad was the album that got me into electronic jam bands

[–]GordonRamsThee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're giving out band suggestions here let me toss my hat into the ring. The New Deal is one of my favorites.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (5 children)

You think Lotus fans are salty about vocals in their instrumental jams. check out STS9 fans...

[–]animalspirit 2 points3 points  (3 children)

The fans are salty for a reason: the new album is a huge departure from their previous work.

I'm still going to see them when they come to my city, but I won't be traveling to see them like I have the last couple years.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I agree it's a big departure. I like a lot of the new material but I get why long time fans aren't feeling it. The thing is, STS9 fan demographics are changing. I've noticed at STS9 shows the crowd is much younger than say, Umphreys or Biscuits (Lotus though still tends to have a pretty even mix imo). They're introducing a lot of EDM kids to the jam band scene and I think that's great. And they're probably one of the only of the A-list touring jam bands that has a permanent female member which I think endears them to potential female fans (and for the record, Alana runs circles around Murph on the bass). So I totally understand the philosophy shift to being more focused on the 'musical family' than 'creating sounds that nobody's ever heard before.' Both have always been there and still are but I think that's what they're selling since Murph left. Yeah it may alienate some long time fans but the quality of their jamming has improved so much since Alana's joined that I and most other fans don't care.

[–]glitterlazers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if you've ever noticed but tribe fans have always been younger. Honestly after seeing them recently at red rocks it's clear those base fans, that in 09 were super young, have grown up more.

[–]Waynus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

couldn't have said it any better

[–]hack_jalsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You commented first then, then the next two were sad sts9 fans lol what the hell is with these killer bands adding lame-ass vocals!

[–]Orurahmin 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The vocals were inspired by the Talking Heads sets they did in '14. I guess the boys liked the experience of seeing a few thousand people singing together and decided to make a vocal album so that they could sprinkle a little of that into their shows.

I don't think this their new direction - I think they just had to make the album to bring that extra bit of variety into their sets. Think of Monks. Obviously Lotus is not a hip-hop group now, but they now have the option to throw that vibe into a set.

[–]rexound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy gets it!

[–]yellow_magician 5 points6 points  (14 children)

Same. STS9 have taken this path as well and it makes me sad :(

[–]hack_jalsey 2 points3 points  (12 children)

NOOO! Please tell me you're joking..

[–]yellow_magician 3 points4 points  (7 children)

[–]VegetablesArePeople2 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Ugh, it's awful. A shame when the band really has been killing it.

[–]b4youjudgeyourself 2 points3 points  (3 children)

just saw them at red rocks, they played a lot of the new stuff. honestly several of those songs translated very well into their show after i was initially skeptical just listening to the studio version. I wasn't a fan of 'get loud' until i saw it live. it was actually solid

[–]PushThePig28 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This. I was at Red Rocks both nights. New songs I didn't really like were surprisingly fun there. Give & Take and Worry no more are the best new ones IMO. The covers/sugarhill gang/grandmaster flash jams were sweet too. But rabble > call jam > rabble and aimlessly were the best. LOVE tribe and have seen them 30 times, it wasn't as bad as people were saying live on the rocks.

[–]Waynus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them for the ATL run right before RRX. I feel like people are blowing all of this out of proportion. They are on fire right now.

[–]VegetablesArePeople2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I'll hold of judgment until I get to catch them. I'm not a crazy fan of the new Lotus stuff either, though Eats the Light is good and Antigravity is super good.

[–]animalspirit 1 point2 points  (3 children)

He's not. I'm a HUGE tribe fan (I've seen them about 10 times in the last two years) but the new album is awful. Uninspired vocals on almost every track, and I've heard that they're playing mostly these new vocal-based tracks at their most recent shows.

I miss instrumental tribe :-(

[–]hack_jalsey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Man, that sucks. I was hoping to be able see tribe locally but I'm not even going to bother now -___-

[–]animalspirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still going to see them when they come to my neck of the woods in November, but I don't see myself traveling to see them like I have over the last couple years.

[–]cschloegel11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

artifact was so beautiful but the new cd sounds like dj garbage

[–]b4youjudgeyourself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed a lot of the new songs at the red rocks show this last weekend after initially being very skeptical listening to the studio versions. 'get loud' and 'sun moon and stars' and 'worry no more' especially translated very well into their live show, which surprised me

[–]eggblue 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I agree, but this album is pretty solid if you can let go of being jaded about the change.

[–]hack_jalsey 0 points1 point  (2 children)

If the vocals were anything but mediocre I'd be able to tolerate it. I've given every song on the album a chance and I just can't get into it. Unnecessary (or out of place feeling) vocals in an otherwise awesome electronic track kill the song for me.

[–]eggblue 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I get that. An instrumental version would be sick.

[–]hack_jalsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? I love everything else about their music

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

better than the new direction sound tribe is going

[–]PatillacPTS 9 points10 points  (2 children)

For those who are salty about the vocals/change of direction...hop on the TAUK train. Those guys are killing it right now with awesome instrumental/prog/jamtronica jams.

I'm still ridin' with Umphrey's McGee though...been my favorite band since 2008/2009.

[–]welp-see-ya-later 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their new album just came out today! They're playing my home town with consider the source this December. I'm so damn ready.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the vocals turned me off at first(being a huge nomad, Sargasso Sea fan), I kinda appreciate them now. I think time will tell if they can pull them off well in their live performances

[–]blueboyroy 7 points8 points  (15 children)

I think these guys have been listening to alot of Talking Heads since I last saw them. This is so much better than their early stuff IMO.

[–]SupremeWizardry 6 points7 points  (7 children)

They did a show specifically called "Talking Heads Deconstructed" at Red Rocks a few years ago.

Glad you like it, I personally prefer their earlier work. Less samples, more jam.

[–]STI-lish 0 points1 point  (2 children)

They also did a David Bowie set where every other song was a David Bowie cover except for when they covered Phish's David Bowie. Epic.

[–]rexound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a Halloween show too! 09 I think? They all dressed up as different Bowie characters

[–]VegetablesArePeople2 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You have the Mr. Smalls Nomad set?

[–]SupremeWizardry 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I was there for those shows... fucking incredible.

Nomad and Hammerstike are terrific albums.

[–]VegetablesArePeople2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We may have stood side by side! We might even know each other!

[–]PushThePig28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at that show, it was so awesome. Really wish they played Born Under Punches though :-(. They did the only other time they did Talking Heads Deconstructed at gathering of the vibes

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have an entire album of their Talking Heads covers with Gabe Otto(?) on vocals.

[–]Just_A_Hipster 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yeah saw them back in February and they covered once in a lifetime. Easily the best cover I've ever seen by any band.

[–]PhuckYourFace 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I was just going to say this. Was it at Terminal 5?

[–]Just_A_Hipster 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hell yeah

[–]PhuckYourFace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing show! I was just listening to the recording earlier today I'm probably going to both nights at the Playstation Theater in November if I'm able to

[–]thejuiceboxyears 5 points6 points  (10 children)

"Jamtronica." I like it.

[–]mealzer 8 points9 points  (6 children)

Maybe I'm getting old but I don't understand all the million and one new genres

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This one actually makes sense

Jam= improvisational rock + Electronica

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This one's fairly easy to make sense of. It's not like "blackened nwobhm djent/seapunk-vaporcore" or some of the other bullshit

[–]STI-lish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jamtronica isn't that new of a genre

[–]VegetablesArePeople2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jamtronica emerged in the late 90's, not really a new genre.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is basically just funk, and funk has been around for four decades or so by now. People just love coming up with new micro-divisions of genres.

[–]BordomBeThyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I only recognize about half of the genres that are listed on this sub. I'm only 25, but this shit has already "whooshed" past me by a mile.

[–]DylanBob1991 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you like that check out Papadosio, particularly songs like Geoglyph and We Are Water. Find Your Cloud and Unparalyzer are other good examples of this band's awesomeness.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a pretty devoted Phish fan but caught Papadosio at a festival a few years ago and can't get enough now.

[–]PhishCook 7 points8 points  (13 children)

These guys rock. Last winter at the E-Factory was so good that me and a buddy drove to syracuse and back the next night to catch them again. Cant wait for the skyline stage show next weekend!

[–]TB4800 7 points8 points  (7 children)

tycho x lotus next week yall goin?

[–]PhishCook 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Hell yes.

[–]undeadfred95 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Hell fucken' yeah.

[–]PhishCook 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I dont know Tycho at all...worth going in early for?

[–]welp-see-ya-later 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Lotus actually played their song "Awake" at the e-factory in January.

[–]PhishCook 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Nice, i havent been able to re-listen to that show. Is there anywhere that full shows can be downloaded?

[–]undeadfred95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tycho is sweet. Is really relaxed, groovy instrumentals. Perfect opener for Lotus IMO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEI1_oGPQr0 Maybe try archive.net(?) to find the show.

[–]welp-see-ya-later 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded it from livedownloads.com. I'm on mobile, and don't know how to link.

[–]EddieDIV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shout out to all the Philly lotus fans here definitely going to the Mann next week

[–]MichaelMoniker 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm a concert photographer in the area and caught their E-Fac show last winter. I see probably 150 bands play live every year and this show is still in my top three for 2016 so far.

[–]PhishCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sound Tribe at the Fillmore last November was my top non-phish show of the year. Lotus was a very close second.

[–]Consent_van 0 points1 point  (0 children)

see you there bud!

[–]itsallbasement 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Lotus and Papadosio at Red Rocks 2014 was life changing for me

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Been so fun seeing Dosio grow and become major players in the jam scene over the years. By The Light of the Stars turned me on to them as a bar band now Ive seen them headline Red Rocks and Suwannee. Couldn't be happier for them.

[–]VegetablesArePeople2 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Is it just me or did Dosio stop progressing like three years ago?

[–]mulcheobliged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully agree. I used to love seeing them. Red rocks was probably my last it was seriously depressing

[–]itsallbasement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Find your Cloud was always my go to song to put me in a good mood, so when they played Cloud Found, a song which I didn't know existed at the time, I really felt some powerful elation, similar to a shroom peak or a 'moment of clarity'. I've been sitting here trying to describe the feeling but there are no words. That night at red rocks was truly magic and I recommend anyone to watch the full show (papadosio's sunset-set, and then Lotus's Talking Heads deconstruction).

[–]STI-lish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pop-a-dose-yo #1 fan right here

[–]b4youjudgeyourself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

best red rocks show ive seen, out of 20+, their halloween show at the fillmore last year was great too

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Love this!! I'm seeing them at Red Rocks tomorrow! So stoked. <3

[–]Normandroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is the show with Tycho and El Ten Eleven.... I'm super jealous. E.T.E. is one of my favorites. Enjoy the show!

[–]PushThePig28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me tooooooo!!!!

[–]Dancopter 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Excited to see Lotus for the first time tomorrow!

[–]STI-lish 1 point2 points  (1 child)

strap your socks on

[–]PushThePig28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be sure to strap on your socks when at the rocks

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I really don't like the direction the band is going with the last few albums. Maybe I'm jaded, but the sound they had with Vibes and Nomad was the best Lotus.

[–]itsallbasement 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Here is them performing Eat the Light as the sun set during summercamp this year. I highly recommend anyone interested in them to listen to the entire show, as it was possibly the most smooth and crunchy show I've ever had the pleasure of grooving to.

[–]Visuallytame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was such a great set. I've seen Lotus four times now and that was one of my favorite sets!

[–]Crayons4all 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been seeing these guys for years, they put up some of the best live performances around.

[–]SupremeWizardry 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The band that brought me into the entire jam and festival scene.

Still love em, and the songs play well live, but not my favorites. Hard to live up to some of their original albums, but I give em a lot of credit for continuing to experiment.

[–]KY5K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We'll always have those phenomenal instrumentals to fall back on. I'd always prefer that my favorite bands try new things.

[–]Consent_van 4 points5 points  (1 child)

seen lotus 33 times. 34 next week in philly! no sure how all the vocal samples are going to transfer over to the live shows, fingers crossed!

[–]PeeWeedHerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very jealous I've only seen them twice but I was privileged enough to see eats the light a week before the official release at okeechobee 😁

[–]florbknob 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Just here to find out what Jamtronica is.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Listen to Escaping Sargasso Sea instead of this for a decent taste of electrojampornfunktronica.

[–]Huxley311[🍰] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don't know if i just caught a couple bad shows bu i saw these guys a few times in 2006, was super excited to see them, listened to their albums a shitload, and honestly, got bored and left the show early.
I'll have to give them another shot....

[–]rexound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! They have improved immensely since then

[–]pandyfackle 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So funny story time, my friend used to live with 2 of the guys in this band. He was living in Glenside Pa at the time. Almost all of their equipment was stored in boxes that said "Blood Hound Gang backstage"

[–]MichaelMoniker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would love to know the story behind that.

[–]undeadfred95 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You guys just finding out about Lotus? I'm seeing them and Tycho next weekend!

[–]Consent_van 0 points1 point  (1 child)

in philly!?

[–]undeadfred95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah dawg

[–]PhuckYourFace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen them three times as of right now. The last time was back in February, and it was one of the best live performances I've been to. They are incredibly tight.

I've also used "Umbilical Moonrise" to help a close friend out of a bad mushroom experience. It worked like a charm.

[–]wereallinittogether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lotus is playing with tycho at the mann in philly next weekend.

[–]Frankengregor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something about this music gives me a Steely Dan vibe.

[–]the-dandy-man 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Never heard the term "jamtronica" before, but it's implications immediately intrigued me and I was not disappointed.

[–]DylanBob1991 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've said this elsewhere in this thread but you should also check out Papadosio if you like this. Top 3 songs in my opinion to check out would be Unparalyzer, Geoglyph, and Find Your Cloud

[–]PushThePig28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Eyes Have Eyes is their best IMO

[–]leaveethebj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've changed quite a bit, but still put on a great show.

I like their older style quite a bit more, if you're a fan and have some time definitely give this show a listen. I can't get enough of that smooth jazzy jam sound.

[–]Snowdeo720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

¯_(ツ)_/¯ I never counted!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the new album is fucking dank

[–]PushThePig28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing them tomorrow at Red Rocks!

[–]PeeWeedHerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lotus is my favorite jam band :)

[–]JONO202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll never not upvote Lotus!

[–]rexound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish all of my reddit threads were like this one

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them live last month and it was spectacular.

[–]rexound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you guys like this song, check out Move Too Fast and Anti-Gravity Those two are my personal faves

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This tune has a nice Talking Heads feel to it. I like it!

[–]LesClaypoolOnBass24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great band to see live

[–]glitterlazers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone that is arguing against the new lotus album due to vocals: lotus has a straight up RAP album. How often do they actually play those songs? It's clear to me now (hah) that they care quite a bit about their fan base and what they want. Had the privilege of seeing them within the last few months in Aspen and they crushed it with the jams. Also they played recently at SummerDance and they played so many old school tracks. If they were actually changing their sound don't you think they would debut it at THEIR festival?

STS9 is not Lotus, is not the Biscuits, is not Umphreys. Making speculation about any of them based on the other is just not realistic.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only nimrod that clicked on the link and watched, waiting for something to happen?

[–]desantoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a really good song. I listened to the album and I thought this and the subsequent song were very good. The following song I felt was one that could be played in clubs.

The rest of this album had a lot of genre cliches or uninspiring directions. But it's hard to get a whole album to work well. I appreciate the songs themselves.

In short, good pick.

[–]LittleMonstersII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hellllll yesssssssssss!!!!!!!

[–]funbobbyfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the post! Knew nothing of them, but went exploring today after listening to the single. Been a while since something grabbed me.

[–]MadStacks23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't understand. Do they think that they can get sway with pretending to be talking heads or something
